[Discussion] Off-topic thread - Moto G General

I've seen many people posting simple doubts, and General Section is already flooded with questions. So that this becomes a more organized section, i've had the idea to create this thread. Here i'd wish you to use it for things that don't deserve a thread for itself. I've come from Ace-i's and Y's sections, and flood there was too damn high. I'd like to prevent this. Please use it for any curiosity or nice thing you find about Moto G.
Thanks for reading this, mathm2013.
P.S: if there is already an off-topic thread, tell me please.

Cats.

Moto G hardware buttons
Well I've found that many, including myself, have found that the power and volume buttons seem somewhat loose and have wiggle room. I don't know but it seemed kind of annoying to me lol. So what I did was remove the back plate and place a strip of clear tape along the buttons and that seemed to do the trick!

This actually sounds like a good idea, might use some to try and stop the back creaking as well.
Do you have another camera that can take a photo to show exactly what you did?

My back is creaking too, but only on up-right part - where the buttons are placed! Also, the volume but especially the power button is a bit loosy, but not that important!

I just couldn`t believe how bad is Moto G`s back. I think it is horrible to open, and i am always afraid of breaking it.

hello. with all the recent talk of the 100 dora 8gb Moto G. im considering one to replace my X2, as my mp3 and video player. i just want to know how much memory is actually able to be used. thanks for answering!
edit: according to the Guide its about 6gb. give or take.. would still like to more more accurately

Yep. I've gotten so tired of hunting down smartphones with decent audio output (line out) and storage options that I opted to just get an iBasso DX50 and use this coming Moto G to stream videos and play a few games.

Well, I actually prefer this kind of back since it's well attached. Some 'premium' phones don't, and when they fall they open and spread into floor. Lol at that...

Can't find backup
Hi, i want to install Xposed and GravityBox to my 4.2.2 rooted Moto G...
I read on both threads that they recomend to make Nandroid backup before installing Xposed.. So i rebooted into Fastboot, then selected Recovery, backup and restore, and it shows the following options:
- backup to /sdcard
- restore from /sdcard
- delete from /sdcard
- advance restore from /sdcard
- free unused backup data
- chooser default backup format
++go back++
Since Moto G doesn't have a sd-card, which option should i select ? I try with "backup to /sdcard", it took about 3 ~ 4 minutes to finish, then i rebooted...
I wanted to make sure the backup was done and then to copy backup to my computer but i couldnt find it on my phone..
Just find this on XT1032\Internal storage\clockworkmod:
.last_install_path
.recovery_version
Sorry for my english, i'm doing my best x) Hope you can help me..
EDIT
Forget it, i found backup stored in '/mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup', how can i backup this to my computer?

Something I can really appreciate about this phone... It doesn't heat up during heavy use like almost every other phone I've owned:thumbup: I've been browsing the internet, tapatalk, reddit & Facebook for the past hour and she's cool as a cucumber

Did't know were to post the request. Can somebody with rooted moto g search for file called "others.xml". It should be somewhere in "system/csc/" folder or something like that. If you find it can you open the file and copy it's content.

hey guys, my request is not simple. i like the moto g alot, i had alot of android phones, but never tried mrore than root/unlocking bootloader/s-off when it comes to htcs, custom recoveries and alot of roms. I think it's time to move on and learn more. i would love to learn how to port miui to our dev the correct way, and i would like a tutuorial .. well not tutorial, alot of reading materials i guess about android, how it works, and how would one go about porting. i know you need a base, like cm10/11 which is not the case for moto g .. yet .. so what baserom should i use and what would be the first steps to porting miui to moto g ? hope someone replies and doesnt laugh at my noobness

I think it isn't possible because the latest miui is android 4.2 I guess, and moto g has only 4.3+
I think we need to wait until there will be kitkat miui

I admire your ambition sadly we need our source code before we can start building anything. As for porting, we would need to port from a device with similar software and hardware. Miui is just about one of the hardest things to get ported. It is by far one of the farthest from AOSP of all of the custom ROMs AFAIK.

[UPDATE 7/24][ROM][BL1.2] Honeycomb Android Illuminate for The Gtablet\Zpad T2

Mod Edit: As stated by forum moderator jerdog in post 814:
FORUM RULES:
"Encouraging members to participate in forum activities on other phone related sites is prohibited."
The issue here is that directing traffic elsewhere is against XDA rules, and while there is no requirement to actively support your development efforts here at XDA, saying it probably won't be supported at XDA and that they can get support on your forum is kind of low and has been removed after requesting LBS do so - to which he did not after 2 days.

cool let me know what you think so far and if you let me know what the things are you missing the most and really need besides Flash. LOL but yeah I want to make this a Honeycomb that is a well rounded Android. So i want the advice of new features and such they have heard about.
Checked out the youtube video, looks pretty sweet. Will try it out tomorrow to see the improvements with hardware acceleration etc.
Edit: Let's see some benchmark comparisons between BoS and Illuminate.
Make sure you do the following
Unzip recover.zip and move recovery folder to /sdcard folder
The recover.zip file can be found in the Roebeets thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078897
Regards,
Kenny N
Humm -- I got stuck with the boot loop . I am updating from 3588 stock recovery
Regards,
Kenny N
After half an hour struggling, I am able to load your HoneyComb edition. I am going to play around with it.
To make everyone's life easier.
Make sure you nvflash your device first using the following nvflash image
http://www.mediafire.com/?g7vorg66iiq29vm
1. Download the nvflash image above.
2. Download the recover.zip from (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=596319&d=1305415712 ) and extract the recovery folder to SD root
3. Download this honeycomb image and rename it to update.zip and copy it to your SD root
4. nvflash the nvflash image
5. Reboot with Power + Volumn up. This should bring you to the new bootloader
6. Flash the SDCard external update.zip
7. Wipes
9. Restart
G'd luck . Thanks linuxboxsolution for his contribution. I will comment later.
Nice -- OpenGL is working perfectly. The benchmark from Quandrant is 1780. Not great but can't really complain

That's funny, I could have sworn you claimed previously to have "fixed flash" too!
Does enabling OpenGL break the stock browser? Or have you done something to work around this issue?
Is the main difference from Roebeet's HCAdam and Vegacomb mashup that is Bottle of Smoke that you have enabled opengl?
This looks very promising, currently running BoS 3.3 and was about to jump to 4.1 but I might have to try this first. My apologies if this has already been covered but what exactly is the difference between this ROM and roe's BoS? How were you able to get hw acceleration on here while BoS lacks it?
Thanks alot for your contribution, and I'll be sure to post my findings later today.
just wondering
so if the opengl is fixed, how come flashed is still hasnt fixed?
i believ robeet said the opengl is what makes flash doesn't work
OpenGL is enabled but not working.. it lacks on driver and without flash no OPENGL.. note on that..
and one more thing.. BoS has HWaccel and working, like gingerbread... the only problem is video HWaccel HD playback..
BoS 3.3 or 4.0+ boot quickly too, smooth UI like that, so i can't really tell what's the difference between the two, except for bootanimation.. LOL
I, for one, appreciate your efforts
Going to start posting in XDA's GTAB forums, at least sporadically. I think enough time has passed and things have changed around here (ie a lot of 1.2 mods are popping up, which I think is a good thing). Plus I'm not really seeing the moderator "changes" that were heavily present in April. So maybe things are back to normal. Maybe.
With that in mind, I wanted to say that your efforts are much appreciated - the end goal is to get a good working HC ROM for the users out there and if you have the ear of some people to make that happen, then that's what counts. I already mentioned in Slatedroid that I plan to pull back a bit after this month with modding the GTAB, so any extra dev / modding work is ALWAYS appreciated, imo.
Thanks again.
Looks awesome, will flash once I get my new PC built >
Thanks roe
So first of all thank you for your work.
But this is different from bottle of smoke because it enables OpenGL right?
Any other changes?

[Q] New Razr M Owner

hey all, been searching through tons of reviews and support threads to make sure the razr m will be my next phone. i love everything i see. my one concern is the roms... i refuse to use stock rom.. i do see that cm has got a few releases but nothing that i see looks final yet. anyone got some good links to share, i know there has too be a few good ones out there considering some of the screenshots i see and with the amount of popularity it looks like the razr m is getting. well anyway, i would love to see some support from some of you that have been using it for awhile, thanks in advance for any advice/tips/roms you all can lead me to!
Yes ROM selection isn't overwhelming but particularly the energy ROM, at the top in development section is more than good enough for me. I got this phone after losing my galaxy s3 and it kicks ass. I actually like it better after using it a couple weeks..the battery life in by far the best compared to the 10+ other 'higher-end' android phones I've owned.

I love my Razr M, especially in regard to the excellent battery life and slim size (I think phones like the Note that can't even fit in your pocket are ridiculous). I've tried Energy rom and it was fine, but I prefer the Eclipse rom, mostly just for the look of it. I also prefer having a fourth menu softkey, I'd gotten used to that on my droid charge, very useful. I'm using the Nova launcher (highly recommended) over the Eclipse Rom and couldn't be happier. Super smooth and I've made it look exactly the way I want it to.

ha! I, too, came from the droid charge. so, battery life was key for me (as well as pocket-size). stock ROM is actually fine - granted, it likes the aesthetics of the custom ROMs, but it does just fine for me.
biggest draw back is memory storage. I would use a custom ROM, but my phone lacks sufficient space b/c I cannot transfer my apps to the external card (despite my best efforts).
I bought this phone on a kind of whim when it was on sale for 50$. I left tmobile too. I can say I have no regrets and haven't looked back since. I was a little disheartened at the lack of development too, but honestly besides a few app specific hang ups this phone doesn't NEED a rom the way my vibrant or s2 did. Everything just works. So don't be down on the lack of roms because the phone stock is still a beast.

If you like CM I would check out trippin bean ROM over at droidrzr.com by marxman. It is truly a nice ROM especially if you prefer CM over a stock based ROM. Having said that energy ROM is awesome as is eclipse which is stock based but has all aosp apps instead of the blur apps. We have noticed the lack of quantity of ROMs but the quality is what makes up for it. Welcome aboard!

thank you all for the responses! seems like a great community.. i checked my tracking info and i should have my razr m by tomorrow afternoon.
all the roms and root method you talk about is perfectly fine on the verizon retail version correct? i hope its not dev only.. also is the m's screen as "pixely" as what some reviews say it is? tbh i dont always have a good eye for "true" hd screen, but i do for pixels.. whats your guys thoughts on it? i am not really one to sit down and watch a full movie on my phone, but it does happen time to time..

since the resolution is 960/540 there are instances for me where i feel like the display could be a pinch cleaner but honestly (again) i have been used to the screen on the gs3. I have perfect vision and while yes pixels are sometimes noticeable, it is minor and miniscule and doesnt affect my viewing experience negatively.

so there really is no way to move apps to your ext. sd card? wont that be a huge hassle with the 4.3 gigs that it has onboard? or is that number that i found not rite?

You can still root the retail edition. After you root, install Safestrap and you will be able to load custom ROMs. There are plenty of guides out there on the procedures, so I won't go into detail.
Personally, I didn't base the purchase of my phone purely off of development. Have you looked at the other phones out there? They all seem cheaply made and fragile. The build quality/materials and size of the M are what sold me. There is now enough development out there to keep me occupied. I ran the CM10 based Trippin' Bean for a while, but I didn't like the inconsistency of some things, so I changed over to Energy ROM. I've been on it for about three weeks. I like the theme and I like the fact that everything is 100% working.

Eclipse ROM
I have bee using the Eclipse rom for about 3 weeks now and it works great. I aslo got it installed on the stock Slot with safestrap. (check the Eclipse forum for how to do it, Around page 18 or so. I have found that all components work. (have not tested tethering, but supposedly it works). I especially like the inverted gapps, and the pop up text messaging feature. Its really convenient. I have not tried the Energy rom, because the Eclipse meets my needs well. Also the battery life is fantastic, way better than the Stock. Also I am using Apex launcher pro, and love it. The 4.2 Camera and google sound search is a plus as well.
P.S. If you buy a launcher; you can use it with every rom you try! Feel free to PM if you have questions-

hey, got my razr m today got it setup (besides looks). anyway i know you said you didnt want to use a custom rom because of the lack of space. i found a long process in which you can actually just install a custom rom over the stock rom slot in safestrap. it does take awhile but you will have the same amount of space as you did on the stock, actually i think i have a little more because of all the bloatware that is gone. but ya i have read and read and tried every app on the market to try to move apps to the sd card, i dont think it is a razr m thing i think it is a jellybean thing, not sure, but after reading its definetly aint just the razr that dont have the option. anyway if you want me to go into detail on how to flash over the stock rom slot i will, or you may already know the trick, just lemme know. thanks again, and ya it really is a great phone, you all was rite.

do share, my friend - is it the same as the previous poster mentioned about the Eclipse ROM? i would like to give Energy a whirl though.
I did elsewhere that ROMs cannot be installed on the stock slot, but I might be willing to try this method. I'm already rooted with everything backed up using TiBu. my battery life is already incredible (sometimes as much as 40% when I go to sleep), so the only real advantage for me is just aesthetics.

yes, i just now went to the post he was talking about, a few people mention it on page 17 on the eclipse rom sticky post, wish i would have seen that post in the first place, ya really all you do is install it to slot 1, back that slot up, activate the stock slot and do a restore of the backup you made from slot 1 with the custom rom on it. then go back and delete the original off of slot 1. you should end up with about 4.4g of internal i believe is what it was before i added anything to it. also when you do the backup of that slot, any apps that you have installed will not be removable once you do the restore, it kinda acts like bloatware that they dont want you to remove, so make sure you like whatever you have on the original backup. also i wiped the data/cache/dalvik before and after the restore, i dunno if that makes a difference or not, and i also did this with the eclipse rom, i do not know if this will work on others or not. anyway, its a cool trick to help with the already terrible internal storage, i think i can deal with 4.4g, im not really a gamer on my phone so i dont see an issue. the eclipse rom seems much faster from stock as well, i cant really say much about the battery life because i was only stock for a few hours. good luck!

yes, i just now went to the post he was talking about, a few people mention it on page 17 on the eclipse rom sticky post, wish i would have seen that post in the first place, ya really all you do is install it to slot 1, back that slot up, activate the stock slot and do a restore of the backup you made from slot 1 with the custom rom on it. then go back and delete the original off of slot 1. you should end up with about 4.4g of internal i believe is what it was before i added anything to it. also when you do the backup of that slot, any apps that you have installed will not be removable once you do the restore, it kinda acts like bloatware that they dont want you to remove, so make sure you like whatever you have on the original backup. also i wiped the data/cache/dalvik before and after the restore, i dunno if that makes a difference or not, and i also did this with the eclipse rom, i do not know if this will work on others or not. anyway, its a cool trick to help with the already terrible internal storage, i think i can deal with 4.4g, im not really a gamer on my phone so i dont see an issue. the eclipse rom seems much faster from stock as well, i cant really say much about the battery life because i was only stock for a few hours. good luck!

I think someone over on Droidrazr.com was able to get it to work. Have fastboot ready just in case, though.

[Q] What ROM suits my needs best?

Hi,
First off, I hope this doesn't violate the guideline for threads on "WHATS THE BEST ROM EVER TELL ME NOW!!!11".
I got it only about three weeks ago and it's my first experience with Android.
I am currently running the latest stock on my N7, unlocked and rooted with the latest TWRP, obviously.
I went ahead and made a complete backup via TWRP and backed up all my apps with Titanium Backup.
I am pretty happy with the device so far, but I realized that there are a few features I would like to have, which require a custom ROM.
I have been looking at quite a few different ROMS like Paranoid Android, CM and SmoothROM, but I am still not sure which one best suits me needs, which are the following:
Specific Features:
- "Tablet" mode, DPI/UI change
- ability to change quick settings bar, allowing me to set "true" toggles and adding/removing stuff there
- ability to create a WiFi Hotspot/Access Point on my N7 (so I can share the Internet from my Nexus to other devices, e.g. my PC)
- ability to (automatically) adjust screen brightness/color temperature similar to f.lux on desktops
- (being able to use my Wiimote with the Nexus via Bluetooth, don't know if it's possible even with a custom ROM, as a lot of Bluetooth stuff seems to have become broken some time ago, but would be nice to have)
- option to change themes
General Features:
- fast(er), smooth(er) experience
- stability
- better battery life
I would like the ROM to be relatively user-friendly, without having to deal with manually editing system files or anything like that too much.
I don't really care about being able to overclock or anything.
Another thing I'm still not really sure about is a different kernel. If it makes a significant difference in terms of battery life and speed, I would also like a recommendation here what the most fitting one in combination with a certain custom ROM would be.
Also, I should be all set with having the full TWRP backup and app backup of TB in case anything goes wrong, right?
So, what would you recommend, based on my needs mentioned above, for my very first custom ROM?
Looking forward to your answers and finally getting a non-stock experience

Yeah, I read that thread (thats why I started off my first post like I did), but I feel like my question deserves its own thread, as I have pretty specific needs for my custom ROM. ( if I'm wrong, please correct me, I'm new here after all)
TROlls they not IN nor BETWEEN they are out there!

I'm just saying that all the different ROMs and kernels are discussed there, so you will know what are the advantages and disadvantages of each, and more people would be able to guide you if you asked this question there.

Okay, I'm sorry then.
I'm gonna go ahead and repost this in the other thread.
I was just hoping that someone could get me on the right track by suggesting which ROM has all the features that I'm looking for.

Exactly this is what xda is about. You'll never get anything on a plate, you have to try new things yourself. I know this from experience, and trust me, it won't take as long as you might think and even if it will, it is a pleasure to do it (at least for me).

Ya developer availability will not be as strong as Nexus devices but that doesnt matter me most because i have xperia u with gb and is running fine..main is the hardware and performace what i get is awesome and camera etc make it a good buy..You just try using this handset and nexus 5 if you want and if u want developer availability then nothing except nexus 5.
Just got mine its epic

I messed up my Elife E7
The phone is pretty great, let me tell you that. But the battery life could have been much better. My friend who has bought the LG G Pro E988 has a much better battery life compared to that of mine. Kinda makes me sad
So, like the many XDA enthusiasts with a phone out here, I tried rooting my phone. The root was successful and I was happy. Then, as my bad luck would have it, I tried this app on the play store, named Pimp my ROM (which I would say is another name for Satan), which seriously messed up my device. All I tried to do was enable the soft on screen menu and back buttons (like on the nexus).
Every single second, I get an error saying SystemUI has failed. So, left with no other option, I used this blessed guy's nandroid backup to restore my phone to its former glory, and it worked!
But my happiness is not long lived. Once every few days, when I do something which I am not supposed to, I get the same SystemUI error message and I have to restore it from the start, losing all the data and apps I have installed.
I am trying to find out a solution to solve this, if I find it, I will post it here. Any solutions to this I should try?
Very poor battery!

Just flash the system partition. You won't lose any user apps or data that way and it'll solve your SystemUI error too

What are the differences between AT&T MK2 (4.3) & NB1 (4.4)?

Since @rebel1699 gave AT&T users a way to expirence 4.4.2 and still maintain some control, I've loaded a few 4.4.2 ROMs. With just a cusary glance I don't see or feel much difference. I was hoping folks sharper than I would discuss this so I (and hopefully others might learn a thing or two). I do know they added a dir system/priv-app to store some apks, but don't know why? Maybe this could be answered first and get the ball rolling. Discuss.
U have to look in the perspective of what google thought at that time. Google implemented system/priv-app and this had to be continued by CM and other AOSP roms or else Google has all the rights to sue them. Only apks in /system/priv-app can use "system"-level permissions.(Thats what i think and i know. I might be wrong?)And as Touchwiz is just a skin ontop of Android, Samsung and other OEMs had to go with this.

Interesting observation. :good: Excellent start. One could expand on this issue as It relates to (Better, Worse or No Change). Maybe it could be disussed how this changes modding, etc...
Responses need not be technical in nature--although they are appreciated--opinions as to how you find the experience of using 4.3 vs 4.4 are greatly appreciated and informative.
This is a group discussion simply to share observations.

Well...status bar now has white icons...theres a camera shortcut on the bottom right corner of the lockscreen. And the lockscreen when playing music is different...those are pretty obvious changes which im sure you've noticed already lololol

KitKat changes the way apps can write to the SD card.
Does anyone know if you can still select the camera to save pics to external storage on KitKat? I don't have a card at the moment to test it out and would like to know before I give this phone to my wife.
Oh and BTW, my phone just updated to NB1 from MK2 by itself, I did not select anything to ok the install, just heard a noise on the phone and looked and it was installing.

It's horrible for the user. Look at this link.
http://www.ibtimes.com/android-44-k...plained-root-access-fix-now-available-1562147
The way I was able to get the functionality back was by rooting (which is somewhat a pain on NB1) and using this method here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607215
I had to use method 2 since safestrap has issues flashing stuff to NB1.
Apparently this app also fixes it, but I haven't tried. But it still requires root.

This is extremely interesting! A few more "uprades" like this and we'll all be using the I-droid!
VOTE!!
Hey guys--Thanks for the comments so far.
If you don't feel like commenting how 'bout voting? Names are not recorded in any way.
A vote kinda says it in a nutshell!
So far, basically we have these diffetences:
1. White status bar icons.
2. Camera shortcut on lockscreen
3. Restricted access to microSDCard in 4.4.2 (and we learned how to regain access)

I am interested to learn this as well. For a casual user, it looks very similar.
OK guys, let's get specific! If 4.4 is better than 4.3--why? If it's not--why? Come on, share! I really think we need to stop taking so-called uprades for granted! I've seen guys/gals almost in tears over losing their custom recovery (MK2) or access to their microSDCard (that btw, cost people their hard earned money). Remember what the commercial sez "knowledge is power!" I believe that is part of what xda was founded on--discovering and sharing knowledge. I know good people from around the globe have increased my knowledge and enriched my phoning experience (if "phoning"is a real word) Instead of just taking all the time, I'm trying to find away to help out however small. I have had the pleasure of communicating with all types of phone enthusiast and am better for it! Give a little--take a little--Discuss!
Oh yeah, as you can see from my signature I want to verbalize a shamless plug for Hyperdrive ROM v15--it's saved me so far during the "lock down." A hardy thanks to @sbreen94!

If you enjoy the idea of owning your phone instead of it owning you, I encourage you continue reading everthing you can. Though there are a few people with poor communication skills-shall we say-the vast majority of the folks around here will help you learn and get the most out of that expensive rectangle you bought. Read one of those "everthing you need to know for noobs threads"--they are well done and will get you started out right. Enjoy my friend!
You will see a "1" on your thanks meter becuase I appreciate your showing interest--and in that way you have helped me!

Actually, one of the reasons I was interested in the update is because I can't get Hyperdrive to work properly. I don't want to derail this thread, but I posted in another thread with someone who was having similar issues with Hyperdrive. If you get a chance, and have a second, please check out this thread. I really love Hyperdrive, but if I can't get it to work, I am thinking about just unrooting and upgrading to kitkat (but I would rather use Hyperdrive). Thanks.

Thanks to the folks who contributed. I learned few things and I hope others did as well. Off topic -- I even got a chance to actually help someone with a significant problem. So, thanks for that--it's nice to be the helper rather than the helpee for a change.

A question for the ages! All I can say is "brood over it brother, brood over it..."
My AT&T S4 says camera pic to SD card and I am on NB1 4.4.2 It says it to Storage/extSdCard/ DCIM/ Camera Pictures camera takes are in there on my SD card. Have you gone into Camera settings and at bottom of list STORAGE is set to Memory Card, Not Device. Just keep hitting the Setting icon on each screen until you get to screen with Lacation Tag Review etc.
