Does the G2 stop charging when battery temp too high? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was charging the G2 in the car today while using gps navigation. The phone kept loosing percentages even though I use a fast charger. Looking at the GSAM stats, it seems that the phone did not draw current from the charger at all... Could it be because 35 degrees Celsius is too hot for the battery and hence the the phone prevent charging?

Yes, it's a safety feature.

It was drawing roughly 40mA. What this person said. ^ It also slows on top end charge.

Battery temperature during charging

What's the normal temp during charging? I notice when on charging mode,I can really feel the heat on the phone. Initially I thought it was cpu until I use an app to verify. Its showing 47celcius. Should I ask for a replacement?

47 is very high i guess , normal is between 36-42 celcius. Check if many apps are running in the background while charging . Download cpu spy in the market to check if the cpu goes in deep sleep or not.
mine the temperature goes up only in one case
when I am surfing the net while the device is charging
while only charging the temperature is OK. Also if I am surfing and not charging it is OK
I also don't think that 47 has any threat on the device
Mine idle's around 22°C, hits 29°-31°C when charging on a 1A (1000mA) charger, and during usage hits 29°-33°C during high usage with occasional, brief peaks as high as 40°C. If your charger puts out more current, I could see the battery getting hotter, but 47°C seems too hot to me. I'd look into getting it exchanged, unless you have something running full blast while charging on a 2A charger. How's your battery life?
my battery life is ok..deep sleep working well at high percentage...i left wifi own downloading some data for games, not sure if that will make the battery warm up?

Phone charging at 500mA

as the title says, my G2 is charging at barely 500mA. while earlier it used to do at 1600mA. Now the charging speed is painfully slow.
Using stock charger and cable, just like before.
D80220b-HKG. Total Stock. Unrooted.
any solution?

anyway i found the cause. Gsam helped a lot.
It's because of hot weather these days.
Normally battery temperature is between 30-35 °C. When i plug in to charge, it starts fine at 1600mA, but battery temperature also begins to rise and as soon as battery hits 36°C, thermal throttle kicks in and charging rate drops to 500mA to keep the temperature down.
In winter didn't have this throttling.
Also if the phone is turned off then it doesn't care about temperature and charge at full speed all the way. But when it is ON, it intelligently negotiates charging rate depending on thermal conditions.

i think this thermal throttle came in after recent D80220b update.
really annoying though. i have lost quick recharge capability.
any way to bypass it? 500mA is way to slow

Hi, where? in battery info?
Hidden menu, charging
So no solution guys?
If i turn it off and then plug in the charger, it charges fast like before (1% in 1 minute).
But when turned ON, it negotiate really slow charging rate and phone feels just cold from back side. When it used to charge fast, then little heat could be felt on back cover.
Right now if i want to Keep it ON and charge at full rate, i have to keep battery temperature under 35°C which can only be done if i keep it in front of AC or in refrigerator.
Gsam is just guessing the rate based o charge before and charge after.
When it is charging slow go to settings and batter and check what it's detected as charging with will say AC or USB.

Turn off thermal throttling in the 'hidden menu'.
There is also a throttle for when the phone gets too cold, FYI.

How and when do you charge your battery?

Do you let your battery drop down to 5% before connecting the charger? Or do you charge every moment you get the chance to keep battery at max?

Battery łasts a long time as it usually goes off the charger at 7 a.m. I charge it while sleeping. Occasionally out of habit I will charge it while I'm driving in the car but for about 15 minutes. Otherwise, I am very happy with the battery.

I'm not an expert, but all I've heard is charging over night or after it hits 100% is bad. Why I don't know, but I try to charge my phone when it reaches everywhere from 15-30 to 95-100 then remove the charger.

I'm not constantly on my phone, so usually charge it up to 80% and recharge when it drops to 40%. I only charge it to 100% when I am out and about for the whole day. See the following link for charging advice:

Nah, that's old news. Modern chargers and devices know when they've hit 100%, so they stop charging at that point and lets the battery dip down to 98-99% before trickle charging up to 100 again, and so on until you unplug. It's completely safe, and you shouldn't trust all those garbage click-bait articles out there. Do not, however, go down to 0% before you recharge it. That can actually damage the cells in your battery, so plug it into the charger before that. If you notice some funky behavior from the battery, like if it's jumping from 30% to 20% in five minutes, or is stuck at 10% for an hour, then it's a good idea to completely drain it to 0% to calibrate the battery since the OS has no idea how much battery is left (so it knows where 0 is again). This will usually happen after flashing a different ROM. Charge it up to 100 again and it should be back to normal.
I personally charge it normally at night, without quick charge, since there's no point in having it quick charge while I'm a sleep for around 8 hours. I'll only quick charge it in the middle of the day, which is almost never, since the battery is freakin' awesome.
Don't worry about the battery too much, but don't reach 0% too often, and you'll be good. By too often, I mean every 3-4 months or so is OK. I base these things from my Sony device which I've had for almost 3 years. The (sealed in) battery was very good out-of-the-box, and it's still very good after nearly three years, so I won't mess with a proven success.
To be safe on the longevity of the battery I use one of these with my wireless charger :
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003P...mer+outlet&dpPl=1&dpID=31OAEbif0lL&ref=plSrch
My battery is usually around 30-40% at the end of the day. I use the regular speed Samsung Charging Pad and set the timer on this outlet for 3 hours when I go to bed. So after 3 hours it stops charging and I don't have to worry about the possibility of damaging the battery (I know about trickle charging, but I think this is better)
Ive read somewhere that the new s7 edge charger doesnt have a power inverter so it keeps charging and wasting power which could damage the charger or possibly device. So know if thats correct.

I just purchased one of those...thanks for the advice. I charge my device when get around 20%-30% of battery and left charging over night ( when sleeping) on my standard Samsung wireless charging. My battery is just ok.. I'm not so heavy user and sometimes I have to charge around 8pm or so. I take off from the charger at 100% all morning around 8am.

Battery hasnt drop pass 30% in the week i had the phone.
My note edge would drop pretty low because i didnt use wireless charging. So my phone would just sit in my pocket slowly draining.

Whatever you read, either you misunderstood, or the person that typed it was a bumbling idiot. A power inverter converts DC power to AC. Your source/utility power is already AC. A USB charger is merely an AC adapter made for USB. The phone has integrated circuitry that controls when and when not to charge the battery and at what amperage.
I usually let mine get to around 5% everytime. Then charge it back fully to 100%.

Not at all, but just try to not discharge the battery completely to the point where it turns itself off. It won't ruin the battery to the point where you actually notice it there, but it's better if you just turn the phone off if you're able to (unless it's an emergency, of course).

I charge it when it hits 20%. But i dont use the fast charging unless i need a quick top up
Does it hurt the battery to charge the phone with a different charger ?
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
I never used the fast charging, I think that slowly charging a battery is better for the lifetime. Most of the time it is below 10 % before I plug it in and I also want it to be at 100% and ready (green LED) when I unplug it.
my note 3 battery is still superb and I got the phone since 2013
Best way to keep a battery in good health is to charge it to full before you start using it. Also, try and never charge it until it's less than 50%. Charging it overnight is perfectly fine it won't hurt anything but once ina while, at least say once a month let the battery drain all the way, try to turn it back on if it goes off sometimes there is still some juice left and it might start up, once it won't start anymore try and charge it without turning it on to full. I wouldn't do it more than say a couple times a month any more than that is overkill and may do more harm than good. These are the guidelines I use and I have never had battery issues. I currently am waiting for my S7 Edge and on my Nexus 6 I usually get 48+ hours with 4+ hours SoT. I'm just an average user currently.

Install gsam battery monitor to check temps during charge. Mines goes to 40 celcius with fast charging .i disabled fast charging and my battery goes to 37c and slowly decreases as it reaches 100%. My suggestion is disable fast charge to increase battery life. Its only like 15 to 20 minutes difference to me.

I don't think 60 degrees is normal. I think phone manual says it should say below 40. Try disabling fast charging and see what happens.

If your using fast charge it will heat up a bit. My hits 45 celius while using it. With normal charging it stays at about 30 Celsius.

My heatup issue is with charging port side. It heats up a lot while charging. So hot that you can't touch it...

I also seem to get better battery life when I have fast charge off, only use fast charge when I'm out and about to top it off.

Mine is only 20-30 minutes difference between normal/fast charge. Max charging temps for non fastcharge = 37c ( depending on what hour i charge, at night is 35c.) .Fastcharge = around 40c-42c max(for now)
How slow is extremely slow?

Galaxy S8 stops charging after 80%

My new 3 day old S8(exynos) stops charging randomly after 80%
Sometimes it's struck at 83% and sometimes even at 57%
Using stock charger with cable..If I remove the plug and restart charging it comes to full 100 percent..
And I feel it happens while charging with location turned on..
Kindly help..
Anyone else facing this ?
Has it been doing this from the beginning? After a soft reset the first thing I would do is boot it into safe mode to see if something I installed was causing the problem.

Apparently when the battery temp shoots up the phone stops charging..
Samsung's reply on this issue :
This mail is in regard to your Samsung handset S8.
We would like to inform you that; this is not an issue with the device, this is the inbuilt feature of the handset, during
*Wireless charging or fast charging, the device may feel hotter and this is normal range of operation which does not affect the device’s lifespan/ performance.
If the battery temperature goes beyond specified limit, the charger may stop charging the device and start charging again once temperature goes down upto the normal temperature (e.g. 36ºC) and this is only a precautionary action for customer safety. This mode is called as*“Swelling Prevention Mode”.
Swelling prevention mode is triggered due to the high temperature. If the phone temperature rises beyond certain limit, the maximum charging voltage is limited to 4.15V which is equivalent to 70~80% (±*5%) of battery level. This operation is disabled and starts charging again once temperature goes down up to the normal temperature (e.g. 36ºC)

Thanks for posting the info you were able to get from Samsung on your end. I've experienced this exact same fast wireless charging problem stopping at around 79% to 80% and when I contacted Samsung via their online help chat support, the rep I got said that they've never heard of the problem being reported to them! I told him that the problem is being reported all over the various internet sites and forums. He still denied it. Anyway, I've put a link to this forum thread in the other forum thread reporting the same problem. The overheating safety check that stops the charging makes sense to explain what we are all experiencing however I think it is a flaw and defect since it fails to allow fast wireless charging to charge our phone up to 100%. We will wake up in the morning late for work and the phone will not be 100% charged? No time to wait and recharge it to 100% when we have to rush out the door to go to work! I can see all the upset users!
Tested mine on Samsung original Fast Wireless Charging pad. When temperature more than 40°C then it will stop charging, you can monitor your phone temperature using 3C battery monitor widget. However, the issue is its temperature won't go down when it's sitting on the charging pad & make your charging halt until you take out the phone & let it cool down.
My solution is simple, use a USB fan blowing it when it charging wirelessly & its temperature didn't shoot up more than 38°C.

What gets me is that Samsung advertises that these charger docks have a built in fan that is supposed to keep the phone cooled. But the fans in these docks don't even blow on the phones at all. The placement of the fan vent holes are on the back of the base which serves no purpose cooling the phone itself. Dumb.
Here in India temperature reaches 44°C during a normal day...
Hence my phone stops charging all the time !
Pretty irritating..hence I am forced to use the mobile in an air conditioned room always..
Don't know if my particular unit is overheating..coz very few are complaining here in india..and Samsung is not accepting this as a fault and not providing replacement !
Can someone post their battery temperature during
1.Normal usage ( social apps with some Spotify)
2.Youtube in FHD with 100% screen brightness with video enhancer turned on for 8 to 10 mins
3.Fast charging
Mine is
1.38 to 40°C
2.43°C
3.More than 45°C

Same issue with my Indian s8 plus on charging pause at 83%
Hi I Am also having the same issue with s8 plus .It stops charging at 83 % and if disconnect the charger for a min and reconnect it goes to 100 otherwise it sits at 83 % for whole day if I didn't replug. Hope it is a feature for safety. I Am getting 14 to 17 hours of battery life for 100% .so great battery management and safety by samsung great.

36ºC)

The question really is why is it getting so warm when the phone is idle and charging? It normally stays cool.. so why on one random night did it get too warm..
There are clearly 2 problems here
Why is it getting too hot in the first place (assuming a country that does not have a very high ambient temp)
Why is it not doing what it is clearly supposed to be doing and continuing to charge once the temp goes down (as Samsung themselves have apparently said, it should continue to charge once normal temps are achieved but it is clearly not doing that)

exactly, not only does it get hot, but it stays hot
it's staying hot, when it's literally just maintaining the charge level.. what the hell is it doing?

That would seem to be a serious problem. If it is stopping the charging due to the heat, and stopping it does NOT stop the heat then this "safety" feature is completely failing to work. It will sit there being too hot for endless hours, which is surely a big safety issue (else they wouldnt stop it charging in the first place!).
As if that wasn't bad enough, heat is bad for batteries, if its sitting there for hours not charging and just generating heat, it will be sitting there too hot for hours on end and degrading the battery.
Ironically if it just kept the charging going then I assume once at 100% it would actually stop charging and reduce the heat (although perhaps this doesn't work either and it also still stays hot??? this probably needs to be checked too, we don't want it sitting there staying hot even after it gets to 100%!). So in the current situation it would actually be better if it DIDNT stop charging so it could get to 100% and cool down instead of sitting there at ~80% and staying hot!
I have the new samsung convertible wireless charger and have not had it do that so far but I am also in the UK where it is not exactly hot anyway (we will see what happens in summer!).
The final question is has anyone had this happen when charging with wire?

i've had mine just over a month, and most nights i wireless charge, all but one night it has charged without issue, to 100%, and it was cool when i woke up in the morning
the only weird thing i noticed at the time when this happened, was that after I had picked the phone up, and put it back on charge, it said 'Fast wireless charging' - yet in settings>advanced>accessories, fast wireless charging was disabled.
I re enabled this, and it hasn't happened for the two nights since. but i don't know if it was related or not really.

Problem is solved..
Apparently when the battery temp shoots up the phone stops charging..

have this problem with a fast car charger from Samsung...stops at 85% and dropping with the charger connected... yeahh the phone was hot because of the navigation maps......(( dam they need to fix this crap
on my s7 did not had thia problem
---------- Post added at 11:36 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:34 AM ----------
did not find nothing on the internet about
Swelling Prevention Mode
From India, I had the same problem while charging off the official charger but I thought that's normal since my M8 "Using QC2.0" also charged very fast til 70-80% and then slowed down quite a lot but the S8 almost stops around a similar mark and then sort of trickle charges the rest of the way.
Had I to guess I would say that between the S8 and the M8 the S8 would take much more time to reach 100% from 80% than the M8
they don't test the phones they crap

they did had a video that show s8 phones tested on heat

I think it's a joke

From INDIA..Here summer is at its worst temperature reaching 42 celcius..It happens all the time with the stock wired charger. My phone never charges beyond 84% except if I am in an air conditioned room..
And also fast charging never works..Takes 2.45 hours from 3 to 100%
Worst samsung !!
