Windows phone / google sync solved - Windows Phone 8 General

my apologies if this is already solved, i couldn't find this info !
I have solved why google contacts will not sync properly with windows phone !
symptom:
You set up a google account and only some names actually have numbers, the rest are only names !
You set up google account and none of the numbers show for people from the account !
reason:
Windows phone does not recognize certain phone types from google ( other, voice, etc )
cure:
Log in to your gmail account
go to contacts
in contacts you will see a list of people that are synced with your google account
click a name
to the side of the number is a box which shows phone type ( other, voice, mobile, home etc )
select one of the 3 , home, work or mobile only
go back to contacts and do this for each contact ( sorry there is no shorter way )
now re-sync your windows phone
you should see all the numbers for missing contacts !!
to prevent this happening in the future:
When you save a new contact in google, make sure you use one of the 3 types of phone number ( mobile, work or home only ) and then save your contact !!!

Thanks
sent either from my Nokia Lumia 820 or HTC Desire HD

How should I store my contacts?

This is my first Android phone so I'm a little unsure of the following.
I've got a number of contacts that were on my sim card as well as my Google contact list, so now I've got double entries for a number of people. Is it best to just delete the Google contact ones or the sim contacts? Are there any advantages or disadvantages of one over the other? Like for example if I have no network connection does my phone still list the Google contacts?
I went for storing my contacts only on google.
As far as I know contacts are stored on the phone locally, so even if you dont have a network connection, you still have access to your contacts.
As far as duplicate entries, you can choose which contacts are shown on the phone. I would pick a method and stick with it. I've never been a big fan of storing contacts on a sim card. I prefer having them stored in the cloud.

Look for an app called MyBackup pro which basically helps you to store all kinds of stuff including contacts to the sd card or on its servers.
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro
I've moved over to storing them on Gmail. For some reason yesterday they all vanished (I had synced them with Outlook too) but the Gmail ones got sync'd back pretty quickly. Then it hooked up with Facebook and put contact profile pictures back in too
+1 for google.
knowing that they are all there and will come back as soon as i sign in, means i am not worried about trying every app under the sun for the first few weeks to see what works, what doesn't and what breaks the phone, knowing i can just hard reset afterwards if the worst happens and everything is back within seconds!!
+1 for gmail. You can edit the phonebook from any web browser. You can force-sync by turning off&on the gmail syncing on the Hero. You can turn off displaying the SIM card contacts in the Peoples app settings, no need to delete them in case you need to use the SIM in a dumb-phone later.
I opted for storing contacts all on gmail and went through the following process.
Sync'ed all my old contacts from previous Kaiser into outlook
Manually updated outlook contacts merging in all google email contacts aswell.
Used HTCSync to update phone with contacts - worked a charm and kept all contact pictures.
Forced a sync with google on my Hero hoping that all new contacts now on my Hero will automatically become updated/created in GMail.
Unfortunately this isn't the case and all emails were sync'ed between gmail and hero, but contacts still only appear on my device.
Have I missed a setting or is it not possible to bi-directionally sync contacts between gmail and hero ?
When you create the calendar/contact item, are you selecting to put it in the google group?
Create a new contact and in Contact type (just below the name) make sure to select Google. It usually defaults to Phone, which only syncs with the god awful HTC Sync software.
once created a contact in the wrong group, you can't change it. delete it and start again.
For those of us a bit paranoid about OUR data, Is there a built in way to sync/export/import data as in Active Sync?
I mean also accessing my data while in out-of-coverage areas, in-flight mode, etc.
Regards.
The data is always available on the phone, no matter whwere you store it.
Just cos it's stored on the google servers does not mean that you can not access it when you are out of service area...that would be stupid.
It just means that instead of you having to hook the phone up to your pc using that god awful HTC Sync software, it syncs automatically to the google servers. It is still stored on the phone locally as well.
Whatever gave you the idea that it would not be?

Your contacts are also stored locally on your phone, so even if you don't have service, you won't lose your contacts.

Thanks for explaining, but post #4 above looks scary. Since I don't have any Android phone yet, I thought they might come as the g-mail servers, if you are not online, you can not browse through your "archived" mail.
Regards.
No, they are stored locally.
also, with the mail program, that stores them locally once it has recieved the ones you choose to sync as well.
it's all good!
moved all mine to google
very easy and i love it!

Does a google contact sync to outlook from the phone?
can i DELETE ALL CONTACTS
I'm having such a hard time with contacts on my hero. Wish I would have just had Sprint transfer them over from my Touch Pro. Anyways, I want ONLY the contacts from my old phone, which have been imported into gmail. Is there a way to delete all the crap that was imported into my contacts from Windows Contacts via HTC Sync? Then I can sync only my google contacts and just live with that.
how do I delete all contacts?

A little tip/trick, and a non related question

First post for me on the forums
First the question -
I have added all my facebook contacts and gmail contacts into the phone, and also imported all the contacts from my SIM; then I started 'joining' contacts of the same people into one (very neat convergence feature);
But now I have a small problem - when I open the messaging app to send some SMS or MMS or whatnot, I start writing a name of someone that I want to send to, but the smart lookup that opens only shows me people from my facebook and not from my SIM (most of my real contacts are in my SIM).
Any idea how to fix this so it will quick search my SIM contacts as well?
Also, how do I send a message to more then one contact?
And now for the little trick (probably known to everybody already, but I just found out) -
If you want to voice input after the keyboard pops up (anywhere on the phone) - and you want an easier way instead of pressing the little microphone key on the keyboard (useful when driving for example) - you can simply swipe your finger from left to right on the keyboard, and the voice recognition will instantly start.
Your best bet, since it doesn't actually merge your contacts, just shows them in a merged format, is to configure all of your contacts under your gmail account. What I like to do then is to sync only the contacts that I have there with friends on facebook (this will grab all the pictures, though I actually set mine in my gmail), instead of syncing all facebook friends (because lets face it, I'm not really going to call "Joey Thompson" from HS and have a chat). You can leave you contacts on your sim for if/when you ever move back to a phone that doesn't sync to gmail, just don't load them.
This setup is especially useful if you wipe/flash your phone regularly as all your contacts are there pretty quickly and you don't have to do anything.
As for your tip, I found this out by the tool tip under the keyboard options, but sadly, I can't disable the voice (removing the icon) and still use this trick to access voice input when I want it. I'd much rather have the ',' than a voice icon when I can swipe to access it.
Funny thing is that if you choose to only sync with FB on the contacts you already have on your phone it wont let you save other friends from facebook as contacts (which you can do by clicking on their pics in the search friends screen). So then you have to go add them as contacts manually and let the fb embed do its thang. zzzz.

Problem with facebook contacts sync

I have synced my account a while I ago when I got my SGS.
Now, I have gotten a couple new friends (total says 103 or so). So I go about and press Sync now on my facebook menu page and it sync. I then check if the new friends have synced in, and no - I can't see them. Under groups, it still says 97 under Facebook, which was the number of friends when I initially set up the sync.
Now, the weird thing is, statuses on existing friends are getting updated, pictures are getting updated, I can even see my friends activities (the ones not added) under Contacts -> Activities..
I've tried sync both with Wifi and 3G.
Any ideas? I would like to get the new additions in
have you manually added those other facebook friends?
using the "Get Friends" menu?
while in Phone book, press the Menu key (is that the correct name) -> Get Friends -> Facebook
wow, there they were
Didn't know I had to "go fetch 'em"...
Thanks alot, mate!
glad to help...
It's a good thing Samsung designed it that way, I don't want my SGS syncing all my 1000+ Facebook friends.. heheh

In the contacts with Windows button you can change view. I enabled Google there. On a previous build a had to change a setting in setting, account & sync. Something like view other contacts
Sent from HD2
tried view only contacts with numbers .... still nothing (
done it !!!!!
contacts=> display options=> google account => check all other contacts !!!!!
Sure you know already but if you sync everything via windows if your build does go west it is an easy istall. other option is to use GIST

Active Directory contacts & stock dialer

Hi,
I have an Exchange ActiveSync account for work email, contacts etc. I can set up the account as "Exchange" and have access to my email fine, but in my last Nexus 6, in the dialer (PureNexus custom rom) I could start typing names and with a couple of seconds delay, it would return matching results not only from my Gmail contacts, but from within the Active Directory of my work, ie. contacts that I had not saved to any of my accounts. Like for when you search for the phone or email of a colleague that you have not saved as a contact.
This does not seem to be the case with the stock G6 dialer and I see it becoming a PITA sooner or later as I often call several people from work that I don't have or need to save in my contacts permanently. Is there any solution to access Exchange contacts from the Active Directory as I described above?
PS. Also, again on the N6 PureNexus dialer I was able to type company names or places and get their info in the results, I guess that's a Google setting I need to check but anybody knows exactly where it is? Haven't figured it out yet...
Thanks,
M
Try a different dialer?
You can get the Google one from somewhere, or try other ones too.
Make sure the dialer has access to emails as well, the permission might be off.

I Can do this without problem...
Justo go to phone, contacts tab, and on the search contact box, just typing the name of your desired contact. Now, the search results have two parts, the first one, your contacts on your mobile or accounts, the second one, the Exchange Active Directory. I guess you have not selected the "Search online option" under Contacts tab, the three dots option on the upper right corner -> contacts adjustments -> Search Online. Also you must have selected the exchange account under the acounts & sync option...
Note: Maybe the options have a different names, because I have translated from my language (Spanish)...
Hope it helps... Let me know if this works for you...
