How do I access the memory while in recovery? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

So I bricked my phone by trying to flash the new 4.3 stock rooted to make the gear work with it. In a constant reboot. I need to get the photos before I Odin back to stock. Or maybe add a custom rom to flash. I'm using TWRP and tried to mount to usb, but my pc won't recognize it.

I would use TWRP to make a full backup on an external SD card. You could then move the SD card to your PC and pull whatever you need from the backup.

Have you tried to factory reset within recovery and see if that makes your phone boot up?

[Q] Sd Card broken/How to put CWM recovery?

I flashed android succesfully on an HD2 and now I can't get my SD card formated. I managed to make it work on my pc but doesn't work for any phone. Is it broken? should I go buy a new one instead? Also, I Don't know how to put CWM recovery. Do I need to download the app and flash the recovery or can that break the ROM and brick the phone?
Panasonic SD Card Formatter 3
Use that, wipe the card out with a full format. Then do a FULL format in FAT32 in Windows, then plug the card in and mount it.
Installing CWM will require you to repartition the NAND if you did not already do so. Which will wipe the present ROM off. Try Titanium Backup. I have never tried it, so I can't help you with that.
Thanks, I want to flash a different android ROM like CM7 and I need to flash with zip so I need CWM Recovery. For now I'll see if the sd card fixes. I'm at school so later today I shall try it.

Rebooting into CWR while connected to USB = frozen

Just wondering if anyone has this issue. Everytime I try to reboot into CWR (while connected to my comp thru USB), the phone just boots up with the Google and unlock symbol (since I unlocked my Bootloader) and it just freezes there.
Will it boot up without the USB connected? Or are you able to get into recovery then there's a option to then connect USB for USB transfer

Works fine as long as not connected to comp. I was wondering because I wanted to delete my entire SD section and then format, then wipe the phone completely clean and reinstall CM7. However I can't boot into CWR w/ it connected to the comp so I dunno if it's safe to wipe the phone. I want to be able to copy the CM7 zip back on the phone so I can flash it in CWR.
Yea I got what your saying you can boot into cwr and there's a option to USB toggle and you then can copy everything then you can wipe the card. Then put it back on when you format it or what you want wipe the phone then disconnect the phone and flash the cm zip. You should be good this way no?

Ah didn't know that. I could boot into the stock bootloader while attached to the comp because that's how I unlocked the bootloader. But I tried to do the same thing when booting into CWR and it would just freeze so I didn't kno how to wipe my SD portion via format (I'm thinking there's a lot of apps I've downloaded in the past and it may be messing w/ my CM7 and causing dim bootloops), then dump CM7 back onto the SD card so I can reflash the Rom.

Help, not sure what to do

Ok well like an idiot I went into recovery and did a full sd card format and all data in CWM and did a factory reset because I'm selling my tablet. Now I have no OS on my tablet and nothing on the sd card and the only thing I can do is get into fastboot mode and I can't even get into CWM when I click reboot recovery it just goes to the android with the red error sign. The reason I'm worried is because I've tried wugfreshs toolkit and now this one to download a stock google rom and flash it but on wug's and this one it gets stuck at sending system . I have no idea what to do, this is what I'm talking about http://imgur.com/ihZzu
I had that issue.. It gets sick at sending system.. I used my friends computer to fix it and it worked I guess mine wasn't good enough? Haha idk nut try another computer and it should work

Use fastboot to flash a new recovery, then flash new rom from within recovery. If you can install a rom to sd or none exists you may need to side load it or use external sd with an otg cable.
If you can get the proper boot.img and system.img you can just flash those via fastboot as well to get a working os, if the dev of rom makes it use it this way, or make your own or if you have a nandroid in yaffs2 format you can use those images, .win, tar etc won't work

[Q] stuck on nexus logo after 4.3 update

i have a rooted nexus 7 32gb 3G model running 4.2.2. rooted using nexus 7 toolbox and was running stock rom and kernel with TWRP RECOVERY and unlocked bootloader
last night i got the update for 4.3 and i agreed to reboot n install the update. it booted into twrp recovery and installed the update n after finishing it did not boot rather it came bak to the menu of twrp i manually pressed boot system n it asked to swipe to fix permissions for su binary i swiped the button and it just booted and and came to the nexus logo and was stuck there. i thought first time it might take time left it for half an hour was just stuck there and I switched it off n put it bak on after sometime still doesnt go any further from the logo.
if i had a backup i would hav just restored it but the update started off directly i didnt get an option to backup n i didnt backup before doing it=|
please tell me how to fix it. i dont mind going back to 4.2.2 but i need my data i dont want to factory reset
thanks in advance!

if ur able to boot to recovery u can get it bak dont worry! just hold down power button and volume down till the device comes into fast boot. and if ur stuck at the logo and not able to shut down (by removing the battery on other phones) just hold down power button and volume down button for a while i think its 5 seconds but it could be a little more not sure. hold it down till u boot into fast boot and in fast boot u can shut it down or enter the recovery.
and since u say ur device is new n if u dont hav much data then u will be able to simple flash the stock rom and hav a fresh new device.
use this toolbox it'll help u do everything. but im not very sure u might loose all the data on it

i can not enter fastboot - if i held power button and volume - it only wake up and show Google logo - and after 15 SECOND OF HELDING - GO TO apx MODE
google nexus toolkit cAN NOT help - the device start to logo and ADB or FASTBOOT can not detect device

If you can go into the bootloader, go to recovery and flash CleanROM or CM10.2 or even a 4.2.2 ROM. Seems to be your only option now. Also flash an appropriate kernel for the ROM right after the flash.
Try a dirty flash at first.
i can - it freeze on logo and reboot after pressing on power and volume

yes i can get into bootloader and recovery. and i hav a few questions...
1. if i flash another rom will my files on the virtual sd in the internal memory get wiped?
2. there is option for backup in TWRP recovery i can backup DATA SYSTEM CACHE and usb otg.
after flashing a new rom can i restore the backup for DATA and get bak the apps?
3. is there any way i can copy the files in the internal memory saved in the virtual SD to my comp or anywhere else through recovery or bootloader? 4. there is an option for factory reset in TWRP recovery which says it will clear data and wipe cache and will not clear internal data. i just want to be sure if the files in the virtual sd wont get deleted if i do this? and by using this factory reset option will i be able to fix the problem?

1. If by virtual sd you mean Internal Storage (the place where you copy files to normally via PC), no. It won't wipe anything there.
2. Although this is possible, it is highly discouraged.
3. From bootloader or recovery you can try adb pull to grab a backup of your sdcard's contents. Don't do this unless you are 100% sure you know what you are doing.

ok i shall avoid restoring backup of data. so ill factory rest it from twrp recovery? it should fix the problem right?
and by virtual sd i meant the internal storage where we copy files from the comp sorry i didnt know how to descirbe it...
and no im not so good at adb so ill avoid tht since u told nothing in the internal memory gets wiped
Go to TWRP>Wipe. And then just swipe. Don't try Advanced or Internal Storage or whatever there is. Should do the job.

im so sorry one last question. if i factory reset n restore only data to get bak the apps.. if it works well n good if it doesnt ill factory reset again.. but does restoring data cause damage tht could brick my device?
If you factory reset, only stuff in /data will get wiped (game saves etc.) Not your sdcard stuff though.
And restoring a data backup from a different ROM may lead to bootloops.

i checked in the nexus 7 toolbox to flash stock image it tells the internal memory will be erased as well=| any other method to flash stock rom?
i havent tried it but my friend told me tht he can mount his external sd in recovery and hes able to view the files on the comp. is it possible to view files of the internal storage on the comp n copy them onto a comp. ?

[Q] Installing custom ROM's

I've seen instructions for installing custom ROM's where you bring up the ROM file inside Odin (PDA area),
then you place the cell in Download mode, then you hit the [Start] button.
Instead of doing this, why can't you place the ROM files onto the SD card, then use Recovery mode to install them from there?
Thanks!

I only used Odin to root my device. After setting up a custom recovery, I've downloaded all my ROMs to the SD card and flashed them from there. Since you're (hopefully making and) putting your nandroid backup on the SD card, it makes it very easy to recover from an accident.
The method I used was from a Youtube video where the guy used Odin to root, and then GooManager to install TWRP. I've got a custom ROM on my phone and haven't looked back.
Good luck and have fun,
-Jeff
you need a custom recovery, I prefer TWRP, as stated above you can get it through goomanager which is available from the play store. after installing the recovery you can download any rom you want to your pc, transfer it to your phone (either phone storage or external SD) after that go into recovery mode on the phone (hold volume UP home button and power button down at the same time, when you see the Samsung logo, let off all buttons) at this point you can find the rom you transferred, and flash, before flashing anything you will want to do a nandroid backup, then do a full wipe before flashing the rom. after the rom is installed you can go into recovery through the power menu. good luck!

So a couple of questions then:
1: You cannot install a ROM using stock recovery?
2: What's included in an nandroid backup?
I'm assuming it includes the modem/radio files, yes?

1. no, you will need either TWRP ot CWM
2. backs up all your data, etc, so yes everything gets backed up

You use Odin to flash .tar files, which reverts your phone back to stock, unrooted factory condition.
Once you've rooted the phone, you use a custom recovery to install unsigned .zip files, which will generally be custom roms and/or mods.
Stock recovery will only install .zip files that are signed by the manufacturer, such as OTA updates and....not much else. If your phone is rooted, you have absolutely no use for stock recovery.
A Nandroid backup will usually include the boot image, system files, and user apps & data. I use TWRP, which also gives you the option to back up your recovery and EFS partition (telephony data). In most cases, you only need to make a backup of boot, system, and data.
Hope this helps.
