Depends. If you do a factory reset via settings, you will lose everything. If you do a factory reset via the recovery, it won't wipe your sdcard.
Sent from my Nexus 7 (2013)

But most of all, it won't put your phone back to stock.

I want to erase all my data, but keep custom ROM. So doing factory reset in settings will be okay right?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk

Yes, factory reset wipes /data but doesn't touch /system. It should be fine.

Here's the deal. I want to factory reset my nexus so I can remove the unlock pin. Question is I can't seem to really get an answer. If I do the factory data reset from the menu will I lose my data from the emulated SD card. According to the picture. I will, but I looked this up and according to some website and other xda members. I won't. Since I've only had this phone for about a month now and this is the first phone that I've had with a SD slot. I honestly don't know what will happen if I hit that reset button.

Back up your storage to a computer and see what happens. They only way I've been able to erase my data was formatting in recovery or locking then unlocking the bootloader.

Yes a factory reset will wipe all user data on the phone if done from settings/backup and restore/reset device. Backup files first.
The nexus 4 doesn't have an SD card slot. You will lose all data unless you've made a backup in recovery or on your computer. And yes, it will wipe the /sdcard folder.

I know sorry meant without just didn't notice it and yeah I figured so. Guess I'll have to wait a bit before I do a reset then.

Yeah this is what I mean. I keep on getting different answers.
But I'll just back things up on a PC and then attempt to factory reset.

Doing a factory reset in stock recovery will wipe everything
Doing a factory reset in custom recovery will not wipe SD context
Unlocking the bootloader and rebooting will wipe everything
Unlocking the bootloader and flashing a custom recovery then wipe cache and reboot will not wipe SD context

Thanks. Although.not really sure which one of these I can use to reset my unlock pin.

Just go to security settings and choose a different lock style !!! Unless you have forgot your pin ??
What recovery are you using ?
I have no issues doing.........
Go to settings and backup and reset option, choose the factory data reset.
Now this will wipe your user data and reset your ROM to how it was originally. This does NOT touch your emulated sdcard partition. Basically it resets the ROM and removes all user apps etc.
You can always use TB to back up all user apps 1st then just restore again after. ( obviously you will have to install TB again before you can restore but all data will remain on your " sdcard".
Hope this helps.
Mmmmm actually I am using twrp so maybe I got mistaken as I don't know how it handles on a stock recovery as it does boot into twrp briefly when I do this.
I've done this many times and never lost my sdcard files though.

Do you have an exchange account connected to your phone? Like an outlook email from work or something? A pw is required if you have that connected.

Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Well I'm not sure how the system handles a factory data reset with cwm but I know for sure that using the factory data reset from phone settings does not wipe your internal "SD card" when using twrp. Now be aware I'm not referring to any wipes from recovery, its the wipe from the phone settings in backup and reset.

Okay thanks guys for all the help! I think this thread is done. I flashed TWRP recovery and I Factory Reset in there and it wiped everything that I needed. I got rid of the lock screen and I also found out that TWRP is a pretty amazing recovery. In the end I kept all my data. Just restored apps by Titanium BackUp. Thanks!

I had this happened to me before, but because I flashed a radio wrong. Your best bet is to download a radio here in the Nexus 4 collection of radios and flash it via fastboot. What radio version do you have?

I've never seen "hard reset" from recovery, just stuff like factory reset (which all it does is wipes /data and /cache, but not the /data/media portion), and then the usual things like wipe /system etc.

A hard reset would include a factory reset and wiping system.

K, not everyone knows that (I mean I would know what it would entail, but if someone pops up say TWRP they're not going to see "hard reset")
So for reference in this case hard reset is :
wipe the following
/system
/cache
/data
If you *really* want to clean up that data partition (warning it will remove all your /sdcard stuff, but rom-wise you can use adb to push back up some zips so you can re-install an OS), you would use the "Format Data" option which will reformat the whole partition including the /data/media area.
Thank you all
I have already done hard reset in the recovery
But it didn't work
i also reflashed my radio(48 and 54)
I can see my baseband version at fastboot mode but i still got unknown baseband and imei at settings

What were you doing when this first happened
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I just take it from my pocket and found it lost signal and shows an empty triangle so i searched the internet and then checked my baseband imei at settings they were all unknown

Sounds like the efs data has been deleted..unless you have a backup, you're in trouble and then easiest way to resolve it is to RMA the device.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I would reflash a factory image including user data. EFS is most likely not accessible instead of beeing wiped.

Files carrying over from previous rom

After flashing MIUI on my N4 and going back to a nandroid of a previous AOKP rom, I am getting a "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped" message over and over. Also, I noticed that after going to another rom (either nandroid or clean flash), there are some files left from the previous rom (e.g., flashed Carbon then went back to nandroid of AOKP and had a PIE remnant, which I know is not present on AOKP). I'm figuring this has something to do with things not getting completely wiped (all this is after complete wipe in TWRP between flashes).
Anyone have any advice on how to get a complete wipe between flashes?
Thanks in advance
Wipe cache, wipe system, wipe dalvik cache and factory reset. Do all those in recovery mode.

I did all those. Although, if I remember correctly, there's no option to wipe system in TWRP. Not sure. But I did wipe everything I could in TWRP recovery.
Thanks though.

After this flash ROM, then skip set up wizard and go to settings > backup and reset and do a factory reset from there. It will reboot. Then everything from the other ROM should be gone.
Hit thanks if I helped

Doing that after a rom flash can cause issues. That is why I always suggest to doing a full and proper wipe before flashing. Though it does seem that MIUI for some reason doesn't always properly remove files when this is done.

What? A factory reset clears out user data and restores the ROM back to the way it is after a fresh install. It doesn't touch the system partition.
You do know that titanium can restore app data from a nandroid, right?
The noobness is strong with this one.

I never thought about the rom being left intact after a factory reset because I only do a full wipe when flashing a whole new rom (I've never wiped after flashing a new rom, only before). And yeah, I use Titanium Backup.

Google's built in backup can do that. Many custom ROM's custom settings can be restored as well if there are provisions in the ROM that allow that data to be backed up to the Google servers. Many of the custom settings I use on CM are restored by this mechanism in the rare event of a wipe. With "App Data" being able to be synced with Google's servers we'll see much more of this as well; I think it's great.
These are "non-essential" settings that won't/shouldn't affect stability, etc...

A factory reset will NOT cause you to lose root.
Using googles factory images you can do a full reset to stock including system. Its like a new device except it doesn't change the bootloader status.

I don't think Google has released factory images yet (for this model) on the developer website. They weren't there last time I checked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381582
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381438
Those will get you to the equivalent of or close to factory (one of them is pre-rooted), which may be all the OP wants to do.
However they aren't technically Google's factory images.

Factory reset

Just wondering if I do a factory reset on my unlocked bootloader/rooted X if I would cause harm to the cell? Boot loop?

That doesn't make sense... All a factory reset does is wipe /data (USERDATA) and caches, it can do no harm, other than losing all your data except what is on the SD card, that is unaffected by a factory reset.
