Hi everyone. I have followed the YouTube video by Chris Nacca (http://youtu.be/Ov6BXOu7SwA)that uses TWRP 2.5 custom recovery (file: openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.2-jfltexx.tar) on my unlocked GT-i9505 S4 using Odin 3.07. Unfortunately, despite the message from Odin indicates all worked fine (<ID:0/004> RES OK !!), on rebooting my phone back into Recovery mode, I am greeted with the Android character telling me there is an Error and then "dying" and saying "No Command".
The phone isn't bricked as I can move the highlight bar through the various menu options at the top left-hand side of the screen and reboot back via my stock ROM but clearly the Custom Recovery hasn't been installed correctly and, despite the Message screen in Odin showing <OSM> All threads completed. (success 1 / failed 0).
I have a rooted and unlocked GT-I9505 with a baseband reading as: I9505ZHUZME1. Anyone got any ideas or advice as to what may have gone wrong as if I can't sort this out I can't move to a custom ROM. :crying:
Many thanks in advance, Jim

Thanks for your reply. Being new to Android, am I correct in assuming that I merely download the last .tar file from the page you provided the link to and install it as I did the TWRP custom recovery file using Odin? Am I right in believing this will leave me with my Stock ROM but I can then do a Nandroid Backup and move to a custom ROM from there when I am ready?

use the above link which is PHILZ recovery
Edit : u have to have ur phone into download mode which u can go by
power off device unplug press volume down home power all together till u get download mode and connect to device
the file extension will be .tar use it on PDA at odin and flash it
then u can take a backup of the entire current firmware and keep it to safe place like PC Hard drive and move to ROMS

Thanks. One (hopefully) last question: The link you provided has both *.zip and *.tar.md5 files. I presume you mean I should use the latter, and do I need to remove the last portion (.md5) to make it a *.tar file or use it as is in Odin 3.07?

User .tar one philz_touch_5.06.6-i9505.tar.md5 since u dont have recovery
No need to remove md5
Odin 3.07 is fine use
below line is Just for info
Zip files are " flashable made" can be used if a one is already having recovery etc like how u flash a rom from recovery

Sorry, back again. I have done as you suggested (twice) and still can't get my phone to install a custom recovery. While Odin once again reports a successful install (as it did when installed the TWRP custom recovery), when I reboot back into custom recovery mode after installing PhilZ Touch custom recovery (as indicated by the blue text on the start-up screen), I no longer get the dying Android figure as I did when installed TWRP custom recovery, but the screen goes to a black, vibrates and then the phone reboots normally (which is a relief). So, needless to say - I am stumped. Can you or anyone else offer any suggestions?

Definitely a rooted phone. I have SuperUser on it and a range of applications from Titanium Backup, ROM Toolbox, GooManager etc all confirm that they have root access.

Ok can u tell me how u have rooted the phone ?
Also download a app from play store "root checker" and see what its saying
possibly the recovery is not getting installed on phone coz of some root access
Edit : Superuser etc can be there from play store without root also wont work thought

Happy to try but could you point me to how I get back to stock firmware and then reset the device? I thought I was still using stock firmware (rooted I understand) so I think you must mean that I need to unroot my phone some how, reboot and then use the rooting process you just posted before install Philz recovery. Would you mind describing a little more - I know I have taken up a lot of your time but greatly apprecriate your help,

U can download the stock firmware from ur device I9505 will be abt 1.4 gb
once downloaded extract in a folder then flash using Odin pda - need to select .tar here again as u did b4 for recovery flashng etc
This will flash a Firmware and u will have stock phone unrooted
from there reset the device from ur phone which will remoce all the bad files etc and all the data also from ur Internal phone memory
after that as told Root and install recovery hope fully this will work without issues

Okay, got all that. I am surprised that you can flash stock firmware back on to your phone as I was under the impression you needed a custom recovery installed before you could add a custom ROM. Is that purely a "safety" precaution and I could bite the bullet and install a custom ROM now (should I be silly enough to try)? I do have may SYSTEM, APPS and USER data back up. Obviously I will loose everything on my phone doing this but can I expect that I can restore the APPs and USER data from my existing backup but not attempt to do this will the system files in fear of recreating the current problem?

Yes u can flash stock with Odin no need to install recovery for that..Custom recovery is needed mostly to flash custom Roms more or less u can say
and this method is 100% safe as long as u do properly
make sure u have 60% plus battery on the phone dont disconnect while its running / installing
and dont re install backup u have taken b4 with system files etc myte create plm
rather use titanium / mybackup pro app just to backup messages/ apps etc and save it else where or SD card for later use

Hi, I have done as suggested and flashed the stock ROM and performed a hard Reset. I didn't expect the flashing of the ROM would leave all my apps and screens as they were. Is that normal? I did confirm that the baseband number had changed, which is has. I then moved on to install the root as suggested and all seems to have worked well with the red Android figure appearing. Unfortunately SuperSU is complaining of not having the necessary binary files and Root Checker doesn't seem to be able to determine whether I have rooted phone or not as it just sits there complaining that my system seem slow. Any advice? Thanks.

Hi, yes I tried SU from play store - same issue. I also reset from the Backup and Reset option on the phone which did delete all the apps etc so to the best of my knowledge, I followed all the steps as described by you and on the various pages you gave me links to.
I have just tried SuperUser. It noted the binaries were old but when it attempted to update, said it "failed" to gain root access. Despite getting the confirmatory Red Android after the root process, I now wonder if it didn't go entirely as planned despite trying 2-3 times....?

I need some advice. I had stock 4.2.2, flashed omega v14 and then 4.3 GE ROM. I did not know about knox and I have tripped it. It shows 0x1 now. I understand that I cannot change that, and that is ok.
But I cannot flash any firmwares now.
I have tried the pre-rooted 4.3 in Odin:
I9505XXUEMK8-PRE-ROOTED-KNOX-FREE-ODEX-FULL
failed.
I have tried official 4.3 for my carrier:
I9505XXUEMJ7_I9505TENEMJ8_I9505XXUEMJ7_HOME.tar
failed.
If I try to flash cwm it boots, but it just stays on the google logo, and does not continue. If I try to enter recovery I get a message about secure mode and it does not enter recovery.
If I flash stock recovery, I can get into recovery. I have tried a factory reset, but it still boots to Google logo and nothing else.
What should I do? There must be a way?
Same issue with me. Looking for solutions. You can install Pacman rom without any problem.
Can someone please give me some pointers?
I have now tried to install the newest firmware from sammobile, even though it isn't for my carrier. It also fails in Odin. I am using 3.07. I can flash CWM and I can get into CWM now, but there's nothing on my sdcard. So I can not flash anything from CWM.
Is it possible to load files onto CWM when the phone won't boot fully?
Is there a firmware I can flash in Odin that will work in this situation?
Should I try Kies? Will Kies be able to sort this out?
Right now I have a brick.
Try a different usb port, different cable, make sure kies is not running in the background and try Odin 1.85.
Make sure you're not mixing up "SDcard" partition on your internal storage with your EXT-SD Card the one that you physically inserted into the device! Save the zip into both maybe and wipe cache, factory wipe, then flash the ROM. Try another cable and USB, try a different recovery e.g. Philz!

During the failed flash-attempts, my sdcard is now empty. I have no files in CWM to flash. How do I get the files to my card? I don't have an external sdcard.
Trying Odin 1.85 now with latest firmware from sammobile. Right now the phone will not boot, I can't flash anything through Odin (due to knox?) and I can't flash anything from CWM since there are no files there to flash...
Edit:
Odin 1.85 also fails. I cannot install any firmware now.
Knox will not stop you flashing with Odin. It won't really affect anything except, potentially, your warranty.
Where have you put the Zip file for the ROM you want to install? You need to point CWM towards it directly, whatever folder it is in... Are you doing that?
You could buy an SD card for a few quid and copy a ROM onto that if needs be... I would flash Philz recovery and Wipe Cache. Wipe factory reset (install a new ROM Option), click Install from SD Card and navigate to the folder.
If your entire SD Partition is wiped you'll need to hook up to the PC and copy the zip back over in download mode.
EDIT: Sorry if this is real obvious or I'm missing what's wrong. I figure if you're anything like me you're a bit anxious about this, just going step by step, we'll fix it!

OK so i haven't got an S4 but i do have the mini and have a similar problem.
MJ7 got released but not for my country, so i flashed an AUS MJ7 firmware. Now it has been rolled out to my country and i cannot flash my original FW back due to different CSC. AUS CSC=MJ1 & UK CSC=MK1. (Failed in Odin)
so my theory is i cannot now flash any other regions firmware and stuck with MJ1 CSC. (AUS Firmware)
Can you remember the original FW you flashed when you had knox 0x0?
Hope this makes sense. I'm not getting any replies on S4 mini forum.

I had CWM. Tried to flash stock recovery now, but I can't boot into it. I do the usual, then a green android shows up, then shifts to lying on his back with a red exclamation mark over it. Then the phone reboots and stays at the Samsung logo.

How do I copy a file over through download mode?
I have tried adb shell with CWM booted, but I get "unauthorized device error"
I think I will buy an sdcard, but that won't solve my problem with not being able to flash anything with Odin. But perhaps I can get a working rom flashed through CWM.
I had no problems flashing roms with odin before knox. Now I can not flash anything at all.
Edit:
I have also tried connecting to kies now like this:

I get a message saying model GT-I9505 does not support initialization.

OK. I went out and got an sd card. Copied over a rom zip to the card, flashed CWM and rebooted into recovery. Chose install from external sd card and ran the file. The setup started and ran for a few seconds, then the phone rebooted and I am back on the Samsung Logo.
I just can't flash any firmwares on this phone no matter how. Knox or not, but it all started when I tried to reflash stock rom using odin after the knox flag was triggered.
Any more ideas?
Edit:
just tried Philz recovery also. Same thing. Update runs for a few seconds then reboot. No go.
Edit 2:
Philz has the option to clean for installing a new rom. It also fails with this:
E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p27
I suppose this as something to do with nothing being able to flash here. What Can be done with this?
Edit 3:
Success!! I was able to flash Omega Rom V14 through Philz. I actually installed and is running. I do get two knox lines at boot, one yellow and one red, something about the kernel not being something...
Now to investigate what the h*ll happened.
I am still unable to install any firmware through Odin. Going to try the Google Edition 4.3 again since I kind of liked that. But what actually happened here?
I'm happy to hear you got it working! I have no idea what caused it, first thought is corrupted zip files for rom. I'll have a look into it.
Sorry didn't get back to you, fell and injured my back, had to go get injections!

Mj7 is not a 4.3 rom. Have you tried to flash any stock 4.3 rom (for example ubuemk1 fob latam) or any other you are sur to be 4.3? Samsung alerted clearly before updating to 4.3 you won't be able to back prior versions any more...

Solved! I do not know what solved it. I managed to install Omega Rom V16 through Philz recovery. From there I rebooted into Philz again and did a total clean to install new rom.
I downloaded a newer Odin, 3.09.
I flashed the same firmware which failed yesterday, 4.3 NEE rom.
This time it worked! So something helped.
Thank you to everyone who chipped in. It seemed rather hopeless yesterday.
I know the feeling man but is possible you were downgrading and you can't do that with knox now.

You can try flashing TWRP it support usb mount on recovery then transfer OMega Rom again..
Kies wont work on your phone because your already in the custom status.
I never had problems with flashing new firmware. But yesterday I thought to flash the newest stock rom I9505XXUFNC4, and I got:
Nand write start!
Complete(Write) operation failed.
After that, I cannot boot anymore until I flash a Pit file. I also tried to install TWRP, CWM and the last rom. Nothing, nothing and nothing. Now my root is gone and my wifi doesn't work anymore.
I'm scared that when I factory reset the thing, that I can't install a new rom. Can someone 'please' advice me what to do? For example, can I install stock rom with ADB?
I would re-download the stock firmware and try again. Maybe try an older version

I downloaded it a few times. And the other version was working fine. But as you can read in my post: I can't install anything but the pit file.

So, it'll boot only of you flash the pit first in Odin?

When I try to flash something, I got that error. After that it's not booting anymore. 'Problem updating firmware' message. After flashing the pit, it's booting like normal.
I tried other USB ports and cable, as some people on the net ar suggesting, but that didn't worked.

I'll have to say, I've never seen that before. I'm not sure what to tell you.

Can you boot into recovery or download mode?
What recovery do you have installed?
I have a Galaxy S4 LTE-A E330SK and have had problems similar to that when trying to install an older firmware or same version on top of the version already on there. Recovery wouldn't boot, and if Android booted, everything would force close. (I like breaking my own phone just to see if I can fix it lol.)
Any time I had severe problems that would not enable me to boot or use Odin, I boot into Recovery, under Advanced, format System, Data, Cache, sdcard, media/sdcard and reboot. That erases everything (your operating system and everything on sdcard0) and if you are stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S4 logo, then you are good to go. Reboot into Download mode, connect your cable, and open Odin. (By the way I also found out you will get errors if you try to flash twice in a row without closing and reopening Odin, so keep that in mind.)
This I would consider a clean install of Android.
Now for the iffy part... Everybody says do NOT check the repartition box when you flash the new ROM. But what I do is make sure I have the correct PIT file for my firmware version. Add PIT file under PIT in Odin, add your firmware md5 file under PDA (or AP,) tick repartition, untick Auto-Reboot (my E330SK would automatically revert back to stock recovery with Auto-Reboot selected.) F Reset Time ticked, and Start. You should have no errors now.
There might be a better way without having to format those filesystems I've stated, but haven't found it. This way has always gotten me out of a sticky situation.
Keep in mind as well, I have never been able to downgrade to an older version of Android. So recommended if you try this do it with the same firmware or newer version that is currently on your phone.

Might I mention I am using CWM Recovery as well
Yeah but I tried to install a new version and tried afterwards the current version on my phone. Tried as I already stated, several things to install and the only thing I could install, was the pit file.
Yesterday I installed CMW with Heimdall method. That worked. After that I install root from within CMW with ADB. And because I got an old backup, I didn't wanna go back that far and only flashed (with ADB) boot.img. Now I got a working phone.
I really want to update to latest firmware, but I'll try after the weekend. Don't want my weekend to be headached
Anyway. Thx for your response!

After trying and trying and trying, finally one of the USB ports let me push the new firmware (NC9) to my phone! (with Odin). After that my sd-card was unmounting itself all the time and giving errors as filesystem not recognized and being blank. Location methods didn't work correct etc.
Yesterday I managed to flash the NC4 firmware, and all is working well now!

Have you unzipped the file? Don't unzip it just flash the .tar file in Odin as @Joku1981 stated
Disable the auto reboot setting in Odin.. Then, once the recovery is flashed and the screen says it completed correctly, pull your battery to turn the phone off, then replace battery, and reboot into recovery. Oh, and make sure you don't unzip the tat archive, just flash it as it comes.......
This was what I had to do when I was installing custom recovery on my s4......i hope it helps

Whenever i try to root my g900h with cf root if struck on flashing cache n does work
and ... when i remove it and restart it sshows me .... firmware problem n i have to flash the tock ... from odin again to restore the phone ... what is the problem even my rectivation lock is off
Try flashing a custom recovery (CWM, TWRP) , it will prompt you to install su when you select reboot phone inside the recovery.
Then you can download SuperSu from the Play Store.

Make sure you use the Odin version that is included with it.
Charge the battery to over 80%.
