[Q] Best device for OmniRom? - Omni Q&A

Just out of curiosity, what device is working best with OmniRom?

Nexus devices always have, always will be.
Next after that would be the Oppo Find5 and N1.

And after that would be Sony

Upgrding Help

So I have decided to upgrade to a new phone but i have a budget of around 300 USD
I was thinking of either the:
Xperia Arc
Optimus 2X
Nexus S
I really like the design of the Xperia Arc but the O2X has much better hardware and the Nexus S has better software support, although the Xperia line up has free Xperia team working on ROMS
If you have any other phone to suggest feel free
Thank you
I'd go for the galaxy s2. Best phone there is. Perfect screen and will get ICS soon

[Q] [POLL] Why did/would you buy the Nexus4?

Let the voting begin...
1. Was using a g1 again
2. Tired of carrier phones their Dev support isn't nearly as strong as vanilla phones
3. Price to power ratio
4. Development
5. Lte support for T-Mobile

mostly because I still have an S2 Lol

I wanted a state of the art developer device!
After I owned the Galaxy Nexus for a while, I decided to go for an HTC One X. This was due to the superior radio/antenna and camera (at the time). Development was strong, but HTC are dicking around with their customers. Currently the dev scene on the One X is dying, which made me remember how good it was on the Galaxy Nexus. I just missed that development community. So, I bought a Nexus 4. No sweat.
Should add an entry:
Because the phone supports AWS band; Works with T-mobile in US, Wind and Mobilicity in Canada, etc.
Low price phone + low price plans combined makes it such a good deal.
Price had alot to do with it also the fact that I wanted a newer, faster phone with a HD screen!

Price and dev support. Bye bye HTC!

I wanted to go back to Android, and I wanted the best combination of high-end hardware and good price I could get. The Nexus 4 delivers.
Price, dev support, Google support, sexy as hell, and good hardware.

1: PRICE
2: A nexus
3: Awsome hard ware
4: Great support
5: and Most importantly, I want to get rid of this aging Iphone 4.
I got it mostly because I hate Sense and Touchwiz. When are they going to make these stupid overlays optional and give me more options on phones. I just had the thought of a Black HTC One S with stock android..... beautiful.
1. had a motorola defy, needed an upgrade
2. specs, hardware quality
3. aosp/google device
4. price
5. cyanogenmod support
5. its beautiful ^^

Because I don't like contracts.
DEATH TO CONTRACTS.
Since I'm switching over from iOS, might as well it'll be a pure Android experience.
Because I like my nexus 7 so much! Sold my backup phone a galaxy s3 and bought the nexus 4 to back up my daily driver, the note 2.

cause that's where android is at.

Choosing a device for Ubuntu

looking at Canonicals system requirements for Ubuntu here, it would appear that even the nexus 4 which is the best officially supported device currently isnt up to the "Superphone" requirements. The gs4 google edition seems like a reasonable choice however it only has 16gb emmc so it too doesnt fully meet up to the superphone requirements. I am seriously considering just waiting for the first snapdragon 800 phones to ship as i would expect much better performance for ubuntu.
Do you think the snapdragon s4 pro(nexus 4), or even 600(gs4 ge) can provide a good ubuntu desktop experience?
I think that a regular 1.2Ghz Dual Core can provide a good ubuntu desktop experience.
A nexus 4 or gs4 ge probably can provide an awesome experience.
LG Optimus G could handle Ubuntu touch fairly well.

Ehh forget the optimus G, it's all about mako.

The "requirements" are set for phone manufactures so that when Ubuntu is ready to be released on devices the requirements should still be a top end phone. Those are not meant to be read and followed by normal users flashing over Android or something.
Well... you make a compelling argument for the nexus 4. Im really debating picking up the white model when it comes out now. However i still feel hesitant knowing the phone has already been out for 9 months and will likely have a successor in the next few months.
edit: correction its been 7 months.

Moto X is probably considered its successor which will be released this summer.
If you prefer to wait I would say wait at least until its specifications is revealed.
But don't be afraid of buying the Nexus 4, it's a good choice.

Nexus 5 will likely be the optimus G2 since LG is confirmed for next nexus phone. Moto x will not be related to nexus like, it'll be its on entity.

I missed the announcement saying LG would produce the next Nexus phone, when did that happen?

I put in the order for a white nexus 4 last night! i rationalized the purchase with the fact that i can sell my gs3 to recover most of the cost, plus its white so its almost like im getting the phone at launch. :victory:

But you're right about the Moto X though.
Hi,
i use my S3 with ubuntu (as an app) with unity. The performance is OK, but 4.3" is a bit to small for 1280x720, so i use normaly X redirection over SSH.

Well.. Nexus is THE developers platform for Canonical -Not gs4/htc/sony etc... So now you have 2 options:
1. Get nexus 4 now and install ubuntutouch 'official'
2. Get a (insert any phone) and pray for updates/ports

For now I'm putting daily builds on my GNex... Ubuntu Touch is is no way ready for seamless desktop mode yet...
Once it all comes together, the N4 will probably get UT and see use as a daily driver. The system requirements cited in the OP are most likely for OEMs considering new hardware dedicated to Ubuntu Touch. Meanwhile, while the world waits for that dedicated hardware, the Nexus Line is obviously the smartest choice for LTS (Long Term Support) through Canonical.

If they cannot get a manufacturer to support them and out out UT devices then the Nexus devices are the smartest choice, however if they have a manufacturer that is wanting to build phones specifically for UT that would be the best thing for them to do and the smartest choice. I don't see many big manufacturers steeping forward though and I wonder if it is Google stopping them from doing so, that's a little tin hattish I know but.....

Get a Nexus 4 or 7 and be sure to get LTS support from Canonical & Google.
Simple.

[Q] Custom ROMs

Hello,
I'm thinking about upgrading from my Galaxy Nexus to the G2. I'd get the N5, but that doesn't seem like a possibility on Verizon. Naturally, I'm accustomed to strong Dev support. Based on past Dev support for LG phones (aside from the N4), what can we expect as far as support? Will there be regularly updated custom ROMs, particularly AOSP based? How long can we expect for CM 10.2 support - and then for CM upgrades to new Android versions?
I appreciate everyone's knowledge in this matter - it will play a big part in my decision whether to get the G2.
Devs are working but I think it's to early to tell. The phone had only been out just over a week.
I came from a GNex as well but I'm happy with just rooting at this point, don't mind UX.

This has been covered many times already. Try searching.
Ultimately, just make you're own mind up. Nobody can do that for you.
It's up to you mate.
Both phones are great indeed.
The LG G2 is like a cousin to the Nexus5.
If you're one who likes to play with Android and like the stock OS then the Nexus 5 is what you're looking for.
If you are more into the LG UI for Android and the features of the LG then LG G2 is for you.
One major difference is the pricing here!!
I'm using the Nexus 5 and I'm loving it. The only con I find is the low battery given in it. The 2300mAh battery is a little low for a power user like me.
But then again you get some you loose some!!
