[Q] REQ: Nexus style menu button - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Coming from using Nexus devices for a long time, i got used to not always having the menu button on the nav bar (it shows on demand, and many apps like Chrome have a menu button in the ui), is it possible to get the same functionality on our G2s ?

[Q] How do you handle not having a menu button?

Many uses I'm missing out on. Example if I'm browsing a site and want to open another window, what do I do?
Or
While in any app how would I access the menu or option settings?
What ROM are you using? If it's stock B&N software, is it rooted?
If you're using CyanogenMod, then you can turn on a set of buttons in the status bar that will replace the missing hardware buttons, much like on a Honeycomb device. It's in the Settings menu under Tablet Tweaks.
If you're using stock, you can install an app called SoftKeys or Button Savior and have it pop up a set of on-screen keys (menu, search, back, home, etc) whenever you press the "n" hardware button. You won't be able to install either unless you've rooted the device first, though.
Two applications: Button Savior or Soft Keys
I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm a big fan of zMooth.
You could also search for Nook Color keysmod and remap one of your volume buttons as Menu.
Keysmod is what works best. You'll have both menu and back buttons that's so convenient especially in landscape. Partner it with recent plus for adjusting volumes in-game and invisibright whenever you can pull up your notification bar.

I use "Virtual Button Bar" in MIUI. it can be set to extend the buttons from a trigger point, or to be permanently extended and float.

[Q] [Request] HTC One X and One S

I am sure many of you have seen reviews for the HTC One X. HTC constructed their device so that it has three capacitative buttons. Contrary to the usual array of capacitative buttons of Menu, Home and Back (sometimes Search as a fourth button), HTC opted for an unusual back, home and recents (multitasking display).
On the One X, if the phone opens up an application that requires a legacy menu button, the phone pulls up a software nav bar that has a single menu software button:
http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-one-x-shows-us-why-developers-need-lose-menu-button
This configuration is possible on the i9000 through the following mods:
1) Remapping the Menu capacitative button to a Multitasking button:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450138
2) An autohiding nav bar with nothing but a menu button. I don't think an auto hiding nav bar has been implemented in a ROM as of yet, but AOKP roms allow for the manual hiding of the navbar. Problem is that when the navbar is hidden the os doesn't show those wonderful in app menu buttons in ics apps.
I tried the first mod out but can't for the life of me figure out how to mod source code (The limitations of a noob *sigh*). The result is a successful remapping of the menu key to a multitasking key but instead of opening up the ICS multitasking display I open up an old school gingerbread task switcher. Yuck. Unfortunately I don't have the android prowess to attempt the second mod. So can everyone please send this request to rom developers or better yet can somebody work on creating an APK or fool proof mod?
The first post looks similar to your problem.
I absolutely hate the fact that holding down the HOME button takes like 2 seconds to open the task switcher. A dedicated button is so much better. The delay is brutal—I always find myself hitting home and opening the app drawer to multitask instead. I wonder if there's a way to reduce this delay? That would be better than using the menu key, in my opinion.
But onto that matter, what downsides to we have of losing the menu key? When do we need it? Can we really go about with not having one? If the answer to that is yes, then I am all for implementing this bit of code into ROMs—since it doesn't do anything unless you change the key from MENU to APP_CHANGE or whatever.
Great idea here.
Great idea !

But should not it be in Themes & Apps section?

But alas this is only my fourth post. Limitations of a noob.
i think i would opt for ONe S
So I found some more updates to a possible solution to whoever wants to try.
Any rom based on AOKP has the ability to hide the nav bar manually. Problem is when the nav bar is hidden, the OS behaves as if a menu button is also present. So we don't get those nifty "three dot" menus in ics apps. Instead, it would be a step in the right direction if we can fool the OS into thinking that the nav bar is present. Maybe a completely invisible Nav Bar?

Yeah One S has scored better on benchmarks . Also One Xl is one the way.

[Q] Can't find Within-Application Menu Button/Softkey?

I hope I'm not being a noob over this.
Having used Android (phone) for ~2 years (installing custom roms, etc etc), i thought I was up to speed on the ways of Android, however I'm stumped over one aspect of my newly purchased Nexus 7 32Gb + 3G.
When I open some older apps (probably those not "optimised for Android 4.2.1 at the time of writing) like Twitter Version 3.5.0 - I do not see anywhere to click/press and access the features i normally found under the "menu button" (which typically allows access to "settings" / "accounts"). My current phone (android 4.1.2, custom ROM) has hardware keys so maybe there's a gesture/config that has passed me by. Anyway I can see in other apps like Google Currents I have three rotated ellipses (top right of screen) that gains access to "menu" (and application settings). Another app, FaceBook, adds a soft key to the bottom left of the screen (again rotated elipses), aloong side the other soft keys. So my question is - is Twitter just a badly designed app (and i should seek another), or is there some technique to gain access to the (config) functions I have normally found underneath the menu button.
Like i said, apologies for being a noob...have googled/searched forums with little/no result...any/all advice welcomed.
Thanks.
Try another Twitter app just to make sure, but what happens if you hold down Recents (button to right of Home)? I know that on my gf's HTC One V (which has hardware keys as well, Android 4.0.3), to get the Menu options to pop up with certain apps she has to hold the Recents key, and Menu items pop up. It's a stab in the dark, worth a shot...
Touch the 'Me' icon on the top edge. Touch the 'gear wheel' on the left edge in the middle. Choose 'Settings'.
thanks for the responses the Me / gear wheel solution worked...!! buried deep!

Multitask button on Nav Bar

Looked around and didn't see this being brought up. Is there away to out the multitasking app instead of the menu button and bring back the 3 dot menu button back in apps? Hate freaking menu buttons and having to long press the home.
I remember figuring out a way to add software nav buttons on an S4 manually by editing some lines in the system but since the soft nav bar is already present I don't think that would work. Any ideas? Thanks.

Root, and there's a few nav bar replacements in the play store that autohide as well.

I'm with you, I think its stupid to have a dedicated menu button when android already has this covered.
The apps the poster above is speaking of does not fix this issue as it also hides the buttons, which is just dumb. Just be patient, I'm sure we will have a fix soon!

This may be my only gripe about this phone, I have tried several of the options, but you have to hide it or tour home screen icons in the dock get lost.

While using the Note 2 I was able to go to the (root) system file and mess with the nav bar. Im going to play with this in a few. I'll report back.

With the S4 I was able to manually add the On screen nav buttons with a line of code. Default android soft buttons are back home and multitask LG edited that to the menu button which is annoying. Let me know what you find. I'm going to try some stuff my self

While I would like to have a dedicated multitasking button, I don't think the menu button is a waste or stupid. There are still numerous apps that don't adhere to Google's new rules for a software menu button and they result in a black bar on the screen. LG dodged this by adding a dedicated software menu button. If you want to see how annoying it is, just pick up an HTC One (or DNA, or One X) and it will make more sense. What they did is emulate the Optimus G Pro (and Samsung's Touchwiz) with software buttons to give the same feel (hold home for multitasking, back and menu). I see why they did it. But yeah, it would be nice if they'd add an option for a multitasking button as either a fourth option or in place of the menu. It would certainly make more sense than the notification shade toggle.

The main reason I did not get the One was because of the stupid buttons. First not on screen and second only 2 buttons.
I do think it will only be a matter of time until someone makes a zip to add the recent button back. Wish I knew how

So my solution to this after 2 days of fiddling with the phone and trying EVERYTHING actually turned out for the better. The setup I have is using GMD gesture control for my buttons and auto hide navbar to have the navbar gone. This app let's you slide certain regions of the screen and trigger different conditions. I have no buttons at all on my screen and have slide functions that work perfect exactly where the Normal buttons would go. Slide up on the left is menu, slide in middle is home, and slide in right is recent apps. My back button is set by my thumb and it works out much better than I could have hoped.

Apps that have their own 3-dot menu
Thanks for the research on this topic. Does anyone know if the GMD app allows an app to retain its 3-dot menu functionality? I've encountered several apps that won't work with the G2's menu softkey preventing you from accessing the app's options.
thanks in advance!

[Q] Lolipop on the S4 and still the home button behaviour is different from S5 :(

Hi,
I was hoping that with Android Lolipop that I installed two days ago on my S4, it would have the same behaviour as the S5 when you press the menu or home button. Since I use the taskmanager (application icons) very frequently, I was hoping that it would not require long-pressing the menu button anymore, but I was wrong.
I think this must be a Touchwiz-setting, so how can I alter the default behaviour to quickly access the taskmanager, for example like it is default on the Galaxy S4, as well as on the Google nexus devices (which use the square button for that on the homescreen).
Thanks alot.
You can do that with various custom roms.
Depends on how you want it. For instance, pretty much all CM12 based roms have the ability to set each key behavior. I have my menu key set to show recent apps when long-pressing it.
Most roms also have the ability to set on-screen buttons.
