First of all I'm sorry if you regard my thread as just filling up the general forum. But I wanted to counter my experience thus far with the TF to those that are bashing it.
I sold my ipad 1 to buy the TF
This OS is definitely in beta; however I'm impressed with how fluid everything is including menus and screen transitions and the Widgets that are available. I've had almost no issues other than some light bleed and a backlight bug.
Thumb keyboard is so awesome on here and I enjoy it much better than my ipad.
Gaming on this is a treat; there is something truly amazing about pulling a portable N64 or PSX out of my bag and gaming with a WiiMote. Not to mention FF1 with a gba emulator. This doesn't account for the android games available in the market either including monster madness and Riptide GP that I'm loving right now. Oh and the flashed based kongregate arcade with its 400+ flash games.
Browsing the web is beautiful; putting this beast in portrait and viewing a webpage is amazing. Browsing for something to buy on amazon or Google shopping is awesome when I can view such a long list of the products. Flash is something that I have unknowingly been missing and is now rediscovered with my Transformer.
I have experienced a few force closes and 1 or 2 restarts but my device is rooted and running a custom rom and kernel and clocked at 1.4ghz.
Right now I'm on graveyard shift at work; the work computer goes into a deep freeze at midnight so I can't use it and we have no wifi. Solution? Tether my TF to my Droid X and watch Hulu or megavideo which are both silky smooth and beautiful on this screen.
Ipads are good devices but this thing is an outstanding device.

I've been patiently waiting until paychecks come in to be able to pick one of these lovelies up, teasing myself by reading here and there in the forums but I didn't realize I could connect a Wiimote as a controller for the emulators. I'm going to have to track down that thread soon, thanks for mentioning this possibility! Tuesday can't get here soon enough, hoping my local Fry's will still have one when I'm ready. Wooooo!
Don't feel sorry mate I've used the IPAD 1 & 2 the galaxy tab and the zoom....... this tablet is a clear champion over all of them......I love my tf a lot too

I just sold my iPad 2 last night (For full price) because since I have had a Transformer, my iPad was never used.
So, I'm an android fan and have been thinking about selling my iPad 1 and taking the cash and picking up the Fire. I've played with my co-workers and realize they are supposed to be compared. Was just wondering what you guys think?
You will probably be able to sell your ipad1 for at least 300 dollars. I guess it really depends what you want to do with the tablet. There are Android tablets out there with better specs than the Fire that you could get for 300 dollars, maybe cheaper with holiday sales. However, if you are mainly interested in surfing the web and consuming Amazon content, the Fire is the way to go. It probably meets my needs/wants about 80% of the time.
The main issues I have are that browser is not faster than my other tabs, not much storage space for offline content, and keypresses don't always respond.
Edited to add: lack of bluetooth is also a bummer.

There are plenty of tabs out there that will service you better than the KF. If you get $300 for your iPad1 seriously think about looking around at other options. After using an iPad I truly doubt, in the long run, the KF will satisfy you. More memory, more options, a much better chance at HC or ICS (very much doubt the KF will get either) and overall better android experience. Comparing the iPad (any version) to the KF is not really valid no matter who says so IMO. The only things they really share, IMO, is that they are both serviced by closed gardens.
That said, welcome back from the "Dark Side".
What I wish I could do is have both. But the wife says only one tablet. Just kind of ready something for something new. The majority of what I do is Netflix, Hulu, and web browsing. I'm thinking the fire will do all those things well and hoping the developer community gets behind this and we get some fun roms.

I can respect that. But don't buy something mainly because it's "new" and "flashy" or "because everyone is getting it". Get something that is scalable, stands good chance of upgrading and will provide you with a learning milieu that truncated e-readers likely will not.
Just food for thought.
Check out the HTC flyer at Best Buy for $299 and look at forums here. It has much better specs and will run netflix and hulu plus.

I really like the 7 inch size. The iPad can be too big sometimes.
It all depends on your needs. I for one love my fire. But you have to keep in mind it does have its limitations, aka memory. It has "only" 6.5 Gb of useable storage, personally I feel that is plenty of storage for my needs. I mean I've downloaded a ton of apps and have barely made a dent, but, if you plan on loading up the kindle fire with a ton of music and movies, you may want to think twice, me personallly ill just stream everything. I might load some music on it for a trip, but beyond that I don't see the point. Enough with my storage rant though. I'm really enjoying the kindle fire, I actually have grown to love Amazons custom skin it just makes sense to me, even though at times it can be a little frustrating because of some.minor lag, which I'm sure can be fixed with a software update. But, one thing I enjoy about the interface, is depending on what section you are in, aka books, apps, you can quickly access the store for that content, very User friendly, but if you don't like it then side load go launcher ex and you got an experiance like other android counterparts. And another feature I feel is well done is the search with a quick click of a.button you can choose to search device or web, fantastic. Plus watching Hulu plus on the fire is great, the $199 price tag is really a steal in my opinion.

I sold my ipad 1 around 2 weeks ago to make a switch to the kindle fire and loving it. The whole experience is much smoother, no more checkboards when I scroll down webpages and having multiple tabs open didnt make the tablet unusable. Though I do kinda miss the app store and itune university. I use my tablet mainly for browsing and reading so the smaller form factor is perfect. Before the kindle fire I thought about switching to the galaxy tab 8.9 its significantly easier to handle than the ipad weight just under a lb. I really liked it but for less than half the cost and comparable specs I took the kindle fire over it

The flyer is 7 inches. I don't have any big problems with Fire, you just might want to check all your 7 inch options before you decide. Of course with the Fire, you can't beat the price.
I sold my 16GB iPad 1 (WiFi) for ~$225 and got a Fire, I couldn't be happier.
I use an ipad2 as a college book and internet lol... if you can justify using it and getting a better experience go for it. I have an android phone so that would be too much android in my life. I'm sticking with the ipad and android together. Makes the one offset the other when one becomes lacking.

I have to say I am disappointed with the lack of storage. As far as i am concerned that is the only major drawback, albeit a large one for me as I can at times be without internet for several months at a time. This is primarily when I want a tablet for movies and reading.
As far as its intended function, as an e-reader, it performs quite well. With wi-fi turned off and the brightness at about 80%, i'm seeing an hour for every ten percent down to 15% before I plug it in.
I think it is a great size. For the most part it is quite portable. Its got some heft to it, but it feels right and solid. I'm sure you have read plenty of reviews by now, so no point in me going on about it.
I say bite the bullet and pick one up as it is quite cheap. If u don't like it sell it, i'm sure these things will be sold out for an amount of time some where, at that point you definitely shouldn't have a problem getting your money back. Heck, pick one up locally, most places now have an extended return policy because of the holidays. I've already bought two as gifts for my family when I go to visit them.

If you have access to usb power source when you are away from internet, you might check out the seagate go flex satellite( 500gb hdd with built in wifi). You can sideload the app and stream media from the drive to your device. The app isn't terrific, but it does work on the fire. The hdd acts as a router and creates a network between it and your device.
Well, my problem has been fixed. I'm keeping the iPad, so the kids and wife can use it and I'll be buying a Fire right around Xmas. Talked the wife into letting me buy one after saving up some money. Thanks all for the recommendations.
I want to buy a tablet for playing games, but I also need it to handle 3G, have some decent GPS and a camera. Since Nexus doesn't have 3G, a decent GPS (it doesn't have GLONASS) and a rear camera I'm not happy with it (I can buy 3G modem, but with other things there's not much I can do), but I read that it is totally awesome when it comes to games.
So my question is: is it? I presume it has access to some Tegra3 exclusive games, but are there so many of them and are they unique enough to make me care? Also, since it's Tegra3 it probably handles most games better than older devices, but do higher details and more FPS compensate for small screen? I wonder whether to buy some 10 inch tablet instead (eg. Galaxy Tab 2 P5100, Acer Iconia A501, Motorola XOOM MZ601, Galaxy Tab P7500).
It seems like you would be happier with a Transformer Prime or TF300. The Nexus has a fine GPS (I always lock within seconds) and is great at playing games (Tegra 3 is second to none in regards to gaming right now).
Lack of 3G and a rear camera seem like deal breakers for you though. Get the tablet that has everything you need, or you will end up regretting it.
Off course tegra 3 is great at handling games....
But as far u want 3g ang gps too u can look for galaxy tab 2 7"(dont go for 10" it is a over priced waste.u can look for note 10.1 instead).it have everything u want and its also perform great in games....
For 10" variant my suggestion is note 10.1

I was just wondering whether I will be able to live without a camera and with an additional device for 3G thanks to the Tegra3 gaming experience. That's why I'm trying to figure out how good is it. I'm not convinced that a 7inch screen will provide a significantly better gaming experience than a 10inch screen, even when details and FPS are better (I have 32inch HD Ready TV and 21inch Full HD monitor and I prefer the former). Also, I read that Tegra2 exclusives are available on other devices thanks to Chainfire 3D, although I can't find any information about how those games perform on eg. Samsung Galaxy 2 10.1 (P5100). And as for Tegra3 exclusives, there are not that many of them out there, right?

you're telling me that you're hands will do better on a 10" screen then a 7" screen? you cant even compare the gaming experience between the two. 7" wins hands down. how are you gonna hold that 10" clunky piece of garbage in your hands and be comfortable?

It isn't that hard to hold a 10 inch tablet. Unless you of course have fairly small hands.

bigger screen = the need for more pixels so they dont look stretched
smaller screen = could have the same amount of pixels for less space to make it look better.
I've have tegra 3 games such as modern combat 3, nova 3, and some pinball game, that I'll tell you right now, look absolutely crazy. If you decide to get a nexus 7, root it, overclock it and it'll run even better.
For me a bigger screen is better, unless there is some radical difference in quality. It seems we have different taste.
I've looked on those titles you've mentioned and they look impressive indeed. Are there more of those Tegra3 exclusives? And do Tegra2 exclusives look better on Nexus than on Tegra2 devices?

im pretty sure if you go to the google play store website and type in "tegra 3 games" it'll show the variety
On Google Play website it isn't even mentioned that Modern Combat 3 is optimized for Nexus 7. Even on tegrazone most of the games are not exclusives. It's pretty confusing.

modern combat 3 may have been a bad example because I don't think that game was made specifically for tegra 3 devices. Check out dead trigger, shadowgun, riptide gp, or fort courage is a good one to

Well, I've just read several reviews and absolutely everyone claim that for gaming there is no better device than Nexus 7 and that a 7 inch screen is better than a 10 inch screen. I'm pretty surprised by this concept, since I thought that I will just put a tablet on my laps and then play, but somehow it seems that you have to hold your device while playing. It is pretty weird, but that many people probably cannot be wrong.
Coming from an iPad, I prefer the N7 for gaming. Its smaller and lighter when playing games and the GPU is absolutely amazing. I find that android has a lack of games and apps in comparison to iOS though. I have already played most of the games on my iPad that I find in the play store now.
Well, you've pretty much convinced me to buy a Nexus 7. Now I have to figure out how to overcome the lack of 3G, because that's the most serious deal-breaker for me. I can probably handle lack of camera and GPS without GLONASS, but I absolutely need my tablet to have 3G. MiFi seems like perfect solution and those devices have a microSD slot, but I don't know whether I will be able to install games on a card accessible through WiFi. I guess I'll just buy it and find out.
So I picked up a Microsoft Certified Refurb Surface RT 32Gb for 279 over black friday and I have to say that I am absolutely in love with this device. Im a college student and this tablet fits my needs absolutely perfect. even decided to completely skip the jailbreaking and upgrade to windows 8.1 and I must say WHAT an improvement!!!! I thought the 8.1 upgrade on my desktop was stupid and pointless...but for this device it makes it into a beast.
There are a few problems here and there with apps crashing and the lack of more choices for apps is a little disheartening BUT I will say that theres nothing that Ive wanted to do so far that I couldnt do.
The defualt movie play plays my .r2ts bluray rips...flawless
Gomp is a google music app that gives you full range access to your google play music library (and has a very pretty interface )
UC Browser is pretty much IE with a bookmark dialer homepage and I love it
Netflix is freaking perfect
IM+ and Skype,Facebook and MetroTwit for all my chatting/social needs
Emulators for GBA GBC and SNES work perfectly and out of the box with a 360 controller
FULL OFFICE SUITE!!!!
IRC Explorer for all your IRC needs
Hands down i freakin love this device. Everyone constantly asks me "OH WOW WHAT IS THAT!?" because these things are like unicorns. No one out there has seen these things in real life. Even my foaming at the mouth hardcore apple/ipad friends were giving it the oooo's and aahhh's
Bottom line here is if you can pick one up for a reasonable price...DO IT! you wont be disapointed ^_^

I agree. I picked a 64 G RT and I kind of knew what to expect. But I am surprised how good this machine is..
To be honest it may be useful to have more apps, and the touch cover is not particularly good but I am super happy about it. Thanks for the apps reccomendations. I can advise to get "Code Writer" even if you are not a programmer. It is a fantastic full screen editor (Free)
The Surface RTs are nice, but they are severely hampered by microsoft's laughable app store. I don't think RT is going to be around for much longer, especially because you can now get a full x86 Win8 tablet for the same price. I have a Surface Pro and love it, but I just got the Dell Venue 8 Pro and it is pretty friggin' awesome.

I have three RT's. One is for myself. My two daughters use them happily at colleges. They are in graduate schools. After updating to 8.1 RT, we do not have any problem. We do not use a lot of apps nor games. I hope that the Microsoft would not give up ARM devices which have great potential to more people who consider finance being the main reason to get tablets of 10.1 to 11.6 inches with some applications (such as Office, social network, and browsing).
I only paid 169 for the 32gb and then $40 for a new touch cover on black Friday. I think this is a great value for me.
The touch cover will take time to adjust to, I'm improving, but not as quick as a mechanical board.

Just a reminder folks: There are forums for RT, and forums for Surface devices. This is neither; it's primarily about x86/x64 Windows 8.x, not Windows RT or any particular device running it.
I've been considering new tablets, and honestly the Shield Tablet has the features I want and I'm able to get one for $250, which seems reasonable. But I'm just wondering if it's still worth it as the it is a year old. How does it compare to newer devices?
If you're primarily going to be using it for gaming, there isn't a better tablet out there. The tablet is a steal for $250. The latest official update really makes the tablet shine and the custom rom called "Blisspop" even makes the device that much better in terms of performance. You won't regret getting one.
Well at the moment there are not many tablets that are faster (maybe even no faster) than this tablet.
Antutu scores are one of the highest even compared with the latest phones.
So speedwise it is still top notch and tablets that maybe come close you have to pay double the price for compared to a shield.
The 32Gb with Lte is unbeaten for that price.
I bought the 32GB LTE version in July, because an LTE tablet anywhere close to the Shield in terms of specs/screen etc. would have been ~$150 more.
Despite the battery recall issue, I'm satisfied with it. My (original) unit has been working perfectly and is very smooth with Lillipop 5.1 (the 3.1 OTA).
I should be receiving my replacement tomorrow, according to UPS. Presuming it doesn't have a defect, I'm looking forward to settling in. I never bothered to settle in on the old tablet (automatic actions, power saving stuff, that kind of thing) since I found out about the recall shortly after buying it, and didn't bother to fine tune it.
I recommend the tablet as an LTE device in the US, though if I didn't need the LTE connectivity probably there might be better values in wifi only (I'm not a gamer, so other tablets could meet my needs... but there are relatively few 8" LTE tablets without permanently locked bootloaders here).

The problem of the tablet is really the processor that is getting old pretty quick (don't know exactly it's true performance), but nowadays everything coming out is already being 8 cores at 2 ghz or more.

But they are often not faster. Gpu of the shield is very fast maybe the fastest around at the moment. The SOC is still one of the fastest around and it is just on the market for 1 year so not that old.

There seem to be two of them for sale at that link when I go to it. One for $290, one for $320, both advertised as new (resale). Probably you're just filtering by Canadian sellers, based on your picture. Lots of folks in US won't ship outside the US, so no big deal that they aren't showing up for you.

Yeah my question was basically how to get one to Canada that's under $500. Impossible! Cheapest I've found is on eBay shipped for $530 for 16gb model no accessories.

The thing is that there aren't much AAA games to play in the shield, it's a good device more for the extra nvidia stuff.
I'm waiting for Borderlands 2 for a damn long time, but it never comes, and I don't even know if it runs on the device with good performance or if it's just for the Shield TV.
More impressive are some cheap windows tablets that for around 350€ can even run Battlefield 3 on low to mid.
Now with DX12 and tons of compatibility tablets might go more for windows again.
In fact I'm not liking much android, not a single game like the good old C&C Red alert 2, boot takes almost 2 times longer than my wind 10 PC, some websites stop working, multitasking is a joke since we can't even play a youtube music while doing anything else...
ps: Also in most performance tests we see other tablets ahead of Shield, so I don't think anything is actually that much optimized for it, not even most tegra games.

My Shield Tablet LTE topped my Nexus 9's scores on Antutu plus the Shield gaming is great to have. Let's not forget about the SD slot and the mini HDMI port on top either. This tablet still destroys everything else (even most phones) a year later. I really mine because it has a stylus and no dumb Samsung home button like their Tablet S/S2 does. Its hard to find a good tablet these days yet the Shield holds its ground and doesn't seem to lose any performance over time. I like playing Half Life 2 on it or DOOM 3 especially when I travel. Its nice to have a tablet which can play nice games too even though that's not its primary purpose for me.

Now with DX12 and tons of compatibility tablets might go more for windows again.
In fact I'm not liking much android, not a single game like the good old C&C Red alert 2, boot takes almost 2 times longer than my wind 10 PC, some websites stop working, multitasking is a joke since we can't even play a youtube music while doing anything else...
ps: Also in most performance tests we see other tablets ahead of Shield, so I don't think anything is actually that much optimized for it, not even most tegra games.

Those cheap windows tablets also use Intel chips in most cases plus Windows an as OS handles things differently than Android does. I agree that there aren't many great games but the ones they do have are fun in my opinion. I have the Shield TV as well and I play all kinds of games including emulators without any issues. My i7 Samsung Ultra book probably can't handle some of the games the Shield can then again I haven't tried. I'm not a big PC gamer but I do know the GPU isn't that great in most Windows tablets/ultrabooks. Android M fixes a lot of the productivity issues and adds multi window and I'm sure Nvidia is working on it now anyway. They tend to lush updates out promptly in most cases unless there's a big issue.
I haven't seen another tablet have better gaming performance than he Shield or Nexus 9 since hwy share a GPU yet use different CPU's. My Nexus 6's SD805 doesn't come close to he 3D score that the tablet does but on Marshmallow it does get a nice ~1500 pt boost likely from the optimization in it. I can imagine the same will occur in the Shield Tablet but we won't know until Nvidia releases it.
I'm not saying the Shield is the best fit everyone but it is a great tablet if you are in the market for a LTE enabled 8in tablet thats fast, runs near stock Android and has nice games for it.
Most of those BEST Nvidia Shield games coming soon are old and I finished them already. (RES5, Half Life, Borderlands, Doom...).
The thing is, you get a good device, but you will probably end playing most games that your phone already can play maxed out.
Other thing is Nvidia blahblahblah says it's more powerful than a X360 GPU, but then most games have a little lag and nothing, but really nothing made to the android yet comes close to most X360\PS3 gameplay\physics (they just look good, but plays like crap).
Then it's my 4th Nvidia shield all are defective and the last one needs to go to RMA again.
I never had an android device, so I wanted to try it, with my experience is just a god damn bugged SO worst than windows.
Also I got sad with the strategy games and how nothing on the android thousand of games even come close to Command and Conquer Red Alert II from like 2000
My opinion:
GOOD:
- hardware Performance;
- Sound;
- has it's own wireless gamepad;
- Nvidia software + remote pc play (button mapping already in the tablet, no need to root 4 that);
- More games than other android devices;
BAD:
- Android is not really optimized;
- Not much AAA games:
- Nothing like C&C, age of empires, Skyrim........ (most games are very cheap copies of good games, but look like a 2003 game);
- In the real world, performance is not as big as nvidia make you think (best phones now probably have better performance, like Samsung S6 which is a lot more little and doesn't come close to having more than a hundred cores like this nvidia);
- Screen quality is not that awesome, it is a High resolution LCD, but nothing special besides that. It doesn't get any close to samsung phone's\tablet amoled screens;
- Battery doesn't last much either;
I actually think that something like that made for DX12 and wind 10 would probably get almost twice the performance than on the actual android OS. At least I saw some people playing BF3 on dell cheap 1 year old tablets that cost basically the same as this nvidia shield. Nowadays with DX12 and Wind 10 soon may be a new era for tablets (it seems windows based hardware have more performance per price than android devices). At least I never seen any 300€ android tablet playing anything close to a BF3 which is years ahead in gameplay + physics than any android game I ever seen\played until now.
ps: If it was today I would buy a ~350€ DELL wind tablet that can even play BF3 (guess what? No need to Root for anything as you own everything already and can update\mod everything).
