Is there an app or setting that will allow me to set custom notification sounds for sms, like I can do with ringtones? Currently running stock rooted.
Person 1 - Notification sound 1
Person 2 - Notification sound 2
All other people - Notification sound 3
Go SMS in the Play Store has the option for individual notifications including sound, vibrate patterns, LED light color, and more.
Sent from CAMACHO, my Verizon G2 (VS980) running PAC ROM 4.3.
Put the file on your sdcard under Media\audio\notifications
Run an app like "rescan media" and it will appear in the list for notifications.
Same for alarms folder and ringtones folder under audio.

I have custom tones already on the phone and they are showing up, I was trying how to set a custom tone to a specific person like I can with a ringtone.
Can't just do that in contacts
In contacts the G2 will allow you to set a custom ringtone, but not a custom notification tone.

Hi, does anyone know of any good missed call/SMS reminder apps?
I've tried "Missed Call Reminder", "Vibration Notifier" and "Missed Call / SMS Alert," but they all lack something...
The first one doesn't have "quiet hours" support, so it starts to beep even during night hours when I don't want it to.
The second doesn't work for me at all.
The last one has "quiet hours" support, but doesn't do anything when the phone is set to vibrate only. I'd expect the phone to vibrate every 1 minute, but no, nothing. There's an option to enable the reminder in "silent/vibrate mode," but the sound notification goes off when this is enabled. I don't want that, I just want it to vibrate when the phone is in vibrate/silent mode, how hard is that to understand?
So, is there a reminder app that:
1) supports quiet hours
2) actually DOES something in vibrate/silent mode
3) ONLY vibrates when in vibrate/silent mode
4) vibrates + sound in normal mode

Is there any way of turning it off completely? I don't want a crappy looking banner.

Look for 'Preview Message' under the Notification Settings in the Messaging Settings menu.

No, that just allows it to display the first few words of the message if it's enabled. Even with that disabled the big banner still appears on the lockscreen stating I've got a new message. I want to stop it appearing at all.

Once in the Message app: SETTINGS -> Notification settings -> Notifications (uncheck)
This is just a guess though... I haven't received a text message yet to verify, haha. But it's worth a shot.
That'll stop you getting ANY notification at all though, no message tone, no unread count, etc. I still want that to work, I just want to stop it coming up on the lockscreen too!
This screenshot shows what I'm wanting to disable. I just want to stop this ugly banner appearing in place of my regular widget on the lockscreen when I get a text.

Hi guys!
I'm probably not the first one who thought about that, but I cannot find much about it here on xda and I'm curious why it hasn't already be done:
Wouldn't it be possible for devs to include an option to swipe notifications left to mark as read and right to delete (with an "undo" option popping up) in a similar way to the Gmail app? I don't know if this would work system-wide (say, for third-party apps like Whatsapp), but it should at least be possible for SMS and maybe the pre-installed exchange email app.
I think an option like this right inside the notification slide would come very handy for generic SMS no one ever reads like for example provider messages and the like.
What do you think?

}
Although that would be useful, I don't think the swipe gesture returns any value to the application. Swipe just gets rid of the notification. The app wouldn't know if it was swiped left or right!
Besides if there are multiple notifications from same app won't all the messages get deleted then?

Hm I don't know much about developing, but if you were to mark it as read, won't the app need more permissions?
I mean in this case THE APP, say gmail, is going to your mailbox and marking the item as read and then returning that "read" value to the gmail servers, instead of your PHONE just avoiding the notification.
Then again I could be completely wrong here. I really don't know
You could also use a third party app : NotifierPro.
by desactivating the notifications from the sms app, and NP pops a banner that you can swipe left/right, to launch/read/dismiss. You can customize that.
But I guess that it would be nice too, to have it directly in the notification panel.
When I get a text message it says new message on the lockscreen but doesn't show the actual contents of the message or the sender - is there a way to change this?

Not with the stock lockscreen i don't think. You could try a replacement lockscreen like SlideLock or a notification supplement like AcDisplay. I'm a big fan of AcDisplay.

Strange that they would show a widget notification saying "New Message" but not allow you to show the message content... weird.. thanks, will try out AcDisplay
It may look at little different, as I'm using a N3, but I'd say you have something similar in the stock message app settings.
Go to the stock message app, and hit the menu button, tap settings. Under settings go to the "More" tab and enable preview message:

Don't thank me, I'm useless
Found it hidden under notifications. Also, you can have messages pop up on screen work a quick reply. Very cool.

Get Notifications in your Smartwatch using your default Watch App
With this app you can read on your Watch notifications you receive on your mobile and also reply to many of them.
By default are including many of the messaging Apps and Gmail, but is you can configure it at settings.
If you want to include other notifications, you must activate it so that every time you get a new one, it ask you. If you change your mind then you can change the allowed or denied Apps in the Notifications menu option.
You can use predefined messages reply some notifications like whatsapp, gmail and hangouts. In case you want to add your own predefined messages you have to edit the file you will find at your sdcard root called: GearOptions.txt
Be sure this App is enabled at your default watch software in order to get notifications and try it. If your watch software can show actions like buttons you could see buttons for reply and even send new whatapp/telegram messages.
In the case of whasapp/telegram this App will send the message with the previous messages of the same contact in order to see the whole conversation.
Don't enable the same notifications type on both Apps in order to avoid repetitions.
Tested with:
- Android Wear (Sony Smartwatch 3): Show action buttons
- Sony Smartband Talk: Show action buttons
- D5+: No muestra botones, Only messages
- Samsung Gear S2/S3: Show action buttons
- Samsung Gear Fit 2: Show action buttons
