Taking MJE Update when on Rooted MJ7 - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have a question: as the title states, I'm currently running stock but rooted MJ7 and would like to update to the newest update. Do I have to Odin back to 100% stock MJ7 and then take the update to MJE or can I just enable root survival in SU and take the OTA as is? Thanks in advance!

You can try survival mode. If it doesn't work you can odin the MJE update and then re-root with Kingo.

Quick question, I haven't updated to MJE because I don't feel like having to re set up my phone. Is Odin back to stock rom then updating to MJE going to cause me to lose all my data again? I know using kingo won't.

What you want to do first is find the MJE Odin flashable STOCK build over in the VZW development section. Flash that which will bring you to current MJE non rooted.
Then google Kingo root to root rather than Root de la Vega(obsolete now for MJE)

You only have to flash the MJE and not any other ones first, just straight MJE flash. But yeah it will wipe everything including your internal SD card, so be sure to back that up first

Updated to MJE, still says it needs to update to MJE

SO.... I updated to MJE via Kies while rooted with Kingo. It worked, I now have MJE, however the update still shows as being required. Any ideas? I have also used Kingo again and have root.
Waiting for a reply. Mine says the same thing lol.
MJC
Can you not unroot with kingo and then apply MJE?
It has mje. My phone says I'm good mje. Kies says I still have mj7.

Did you install an MJE rom? I'm pretty sure your build tag under status in settings probably still says MJ7 even though you have the MJE radio.
Mine is like this as well since I'm running Beans on MJE's radio.
Nope it says mje lol.
MJC
Im on clean rom v1.5 mje base on rom slot 1. My stock rom slot is still mJ7.

[Q] how to remove root files after nb1 update

I was rooted on 4.3 and then I unrooted abd did it a update to nb1. Now when I try to use ISIS it says phone has been rooted. I know there is a work around but you have to be rooted for it. Is there a way I can remove whatever file ISIS is seeing that is making it think three phone is rooted when it's not.
Are you sure you're on NB1?If you're not, you will have to get pure stock 4.3 and flash via Odin

Yea I am on NB1, I was thinking of going back to MK2 doing a full unroot with removal of the backed up superuser. Then upgrading back to NB1. I will try it tonight to see if that will work.
You won't be able to downgrade to MK2

Stuck in Odin

I am running stock AT&T 4.2.2 MF3 rooted with Motochopper, I believe.
An OTA downloaded on my device today, NC1 I guess? I knew I couldn't install it because either it would fail after detecting root, or I would potentially brick.
I wanted to update to stock NB1 or NC1 (maintaining or re-establishing root afterward).
The MF3 update threads I have found seem outdated.
Please let me know what the safest way to flash the latest stock that is rootable.
Thanks in advance.

Hello, Sixftsix, I am in the same boat as you. MF3 rooted wanting to upgrade to NC1. Did it successfully work for you? The files say NB1 to NC1 not MF3 to NC1 so I was just wondering if it worked. Also what version of Safestrap did you use?
Thank you very much!

I haven't upgraded yet, I'm still confused on what is the proper/safest method.
I am not sure if we have to go from MF3 > MK2 > NB1 > NC1... or if we can go directly to NB1 with this: "NB1 STOCK -- Get to NB1 Stock from NB1 or earlier... I337UCUFNB1 4.4 Stock Odin Tar & System Dump", then use the NB1 to NC1 method.
Let me know if you attempt anything and the results, I will do the same. I did lot of reading with no clear answers.
If anyone can confirm the best method, I would appreciate your help!

Apparently you need to upgrade to MK2, root, then do MK2 to NB1, and then NB1 to NC1. Its a process. I think I'll just stick with 4.2.2 until a root method is available for KitKat then I'll just upgrade to KitKat instead of flashing because I always have bad luck when it comes to soft modding...
Good luck.

If you want NB1, you can flash straight to it with the ODIN package. If you want root, you can flash to either MK2 or NB1 but going to NB1 adds in the downgrade steps.

Thank you! One question. I use Linux so I wouldn't be using ODIN I would be flashing with Heimdall. Same thing right?

Slightly different. You'll have to extract the partitions to flash from the ODIN file since it doesn't work with ODIN packages directly. Alternatively, you could try JODIN3.

this root seems alot more complicated than the one for MF3.
The direct root for NC1 is called towelroot. That thread also mentions this.

Turn on your OTA. Within one or two days AT&T will update your phone to 4.4.2 and NC1 firmware. Then you use towelroot .
If the OTA did not happen within two days, you might need to odin the stock MF3 then use the update software function to get OTA.
I turned in the ota and it downloaded the update but it won't update it. It keeps failing and it says my firmware in up to date and u have to wait 23 hours to do it again.

Sometimes, if you have rooted rom, it could happen.
Like I said, wait one or two days to see whether OTA successfully updated. If not you need to odin the stock MF3 to get OTA working..

Sometime OTA does not work if you were rooted. That happened to my while I was with android 2.xx .
So every time I want an OTA, I odin the stock rom.
