Stock email app. Exchange email bug after 4.3 update. - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi and merry x-mas to all.
Yesterday I came accross with a problem in the stock email app that I am use for my hotmail account. I have set up my hotmail account as microsoft exchange account. I can receive emails at no time but when I try to send emails I get a message in the center of the screen "retrieving account information" and the email never send. Does anyone knows how to fix this? Sorry dor my english.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app

I have the same problem after the update.

Same for me with a Zimbra account.
Additionnal informations:
If using IMAP/SMTP configuration, everything works.
If using third-party mail configuration for AES (instead of native one), it works as I have tested it with "Moxier Mais (Exchange) - Trial"
If using other phones (Samsung Galaxy S with CyanogenMod, or iPhone 4 with iOS7), Exchange works as a charm...
The phone security policy which can be required by AES have been turn down for my Zimbra account by administrator...
Conclusion: there is something realy wrong with the native AES configuration in the GS4 (Android 4.3)... Official Android 4.4 should come by the end of January 2014 for this device, lets hope it will correct that!

Gmail IMAP server down

I normally use the Email app instead of the Gmail app to access my Gmail (uses IMAP). However, sometime tonight, I found I can't connect to the server anymore. Any of you checking your Gmail through the Email app and seeing the same thing?
When I try to check my Gmail through the E-mail all/IMAP, I get the following error: "Cannot connect to server. (Expected string, none found.)"
I have the same problem. When I try to download my e-mails thru Mozilla Thunderbird it doesn't seem to work either.. Very annoying..
Trying to check my Gmail through the email app it just said connection error. Deleted the account and now I keep getting Cannot connect to server. (Expected string, none found.)
IMAP Issues
As previously reported and as at 09:50am 25th May (UK Time) the IMAP servers at Google still seem to be down....
However the POP3 servers seems fine . Its a pain but you can (as I have) just reset up the Email client to use POP3.....
L
Still down...
Yes, I too cannot connect via IMAP on my Samsung Galaxy S.
Isit working now? because I don't seem to be having any problems with the Samsung E-mail app as I've been receiving push messages all day.
Nope
No, I'm afraid there's no change.
G.
Well I don't see what the problem is as mine works fine.
Can you explain what you mean by "Samsung Email app"? I am using "Enhanced Mail" a tweaked version of POP/IMAP app that comes with the phone...
it is weird but i am getting the above Error- connection error- expected string not found. on my Asus ee pad transfmr- stock email on 2 gmail accounts but not aol acct-
not getting the error on my phone Samsung Galaxy using K9 or on my pc with outlook.
All 3 are set up as IMAP.

If you mean the stock E-mail app that comes with the SGS2 besides the official gmail app then yes that is what I'am using and as tony also pointed out, my IMAP works just fine.
You guys are spreading false info.
1. If you claim Gmail IMAP global server is down... please, let's see some proof!
EE is the only application as far as I know having any issues. My Evo stock email and K-9 are having no problems with Gmail Imap, nor is my PC running Outlook '10.
So please don't post this, you have the EE dev now believing Gmail has a problem, it's actually some specific apps.

My K9 on my samsung Galaxy works with no probs, but i did just try the stock email on the samsung and only aol is working, not the Gmail accts, Same issue on the EEpad. k9 works with 2 gmail and 1 aol. but on stock EE only aol works, not 2 gmail.
Not sure who you are referring to about false rumors- i assume someone else.
But i am only adding my issue to the thread to help if i could as well as looking for answers. So please take it down a notch.
Actually my EE app also works fine with Gmail. If I wasn't at work and were also bothered to do so, I could take a SS of the last sync time and post it here.
My Gmail works fine on EE, it's just you guys experiencing problems, and the IMAP servers also work fine everywhere else.
Same problem Evo 4G with Cyanogenmod's mail app

Did anyone mention EE on here or did they mention the stock email app?
To everyone saying gmail imap is not down this is OBVIOUSLY going to be location specific since gmail has a different server for almost every part of the world.
Here is proof that it is NOT accessible even from a pc
Code:
$ telnet imap.gmail.com 143
Trying 74.125.159.109...
telnet: connect to address 74.125.159.109: Operation timed out
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host
For the dissenters, this isn't an isolated issue. I started a post on Android support forum less than 12 hours ago, and as of this morning, TONS of people are seeing this issue. And for several, they are seeing this issue since last night, which is exactly my situation as I had 0 problems previously:
http://www.google.com/support/forum...ad?fid=14e9ec7ab723b8170004a41bef9538d4&hl=en
My Push Hotmail account and IMAP Yahoo account are working perfectly btw.
Lastly, how are you setting up Push E-mail through the stock E-mail app for Gmail? From what I can tell, the Gmail IMAP setup is Pull only, if you're using a Push method, please do share.

Acer system update enabled Microsoft Exchange Activesync...Corporate Email

Hi guys I have unrooted Acer A500 and today I got system update over the air and now I have Acer_A500_1.141.01_EMEA_Gen3 and the biggest feature of this update for me is ability to add Corporate email account ...Microsoft ActiveSync Exchange....
now my tab is configured with the push mail for my office email.....very kool.....
Also With 1.139.05_COM_GEN1 The corporate account has been activated.
Even if I'm facing strange behavior, not being able to sincronize the last 3 / 4 days.
Same configuration of exchange server is perfectly working for touchdown sw.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
I also can finally access Corporate account, but not all my Contacts will come down. Can't figure out why. Calender and email are all there.
Check your contacts and see if they are all there.
Same as you, exchange global contacts not available.
As a workaround, I've installed this app:
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.vivekiyer.GAL&feature=search_result
Works like a charm !

being able to download a global address book shouldn't be allowed, as some can be HUGE (my job has 27,000+ contacts in the gal)
We had a windows mobile or android phone last year with a corrupt profile and it tried to dl the whole gal.... phone ran out of memory at 17000!
most e-mail apps will allow you to search against it though.
This one doesn't download GAL. It just let you gain access to the GAL as EMail application does it but only for email adress
Yea but I'm accessing my own personal Exchange Server and I don't enforce full encryption. I only keep about 500 names on in it in the "non corporate" side, all associated to my personal account. All 500 came into my HTC Inc2, but my Acer only brought in about 350-400. I'm trying to figure out why, was it an association to a classification, linked accounts... or what. So far seems random.
Also, I downloaded "Corporate address book" you refered to on the Market to my HTC Inc2, (says it won't load to my Acer). I set up my server and to be sure my contacts weren't "GAL" I ran it and says nothing found, no matter what I search for.
Thanks.

[Q] configure exchange email

hello
i have encountered the same pb on S3 and now also on the S4. I can not configure the exchange email app. only the mail. how can i do that because it seems to me already that samsung only says that you have exchange email but it doesnt work. wtf?!
Mail exchange works perfectly on Sgs3 and now on sgs4... I use it non stop. Ask your administrator of the mail exchange server settings. You do something wrong with the settings.

Wow .. now that activesync has expired on gmail I need to reinvent my mail syncing on my new s4.
The way I wanted to go about it is that I let gmail sync calendar and contacts and use the native mail client via imap.
Why not use gmail for mails too .. well because I need to set up my work activesync account too .. and I don't want two apps for mails.
First thing I notice is that when I set up imap access to gmail with the native application I get no push functionality (imap idle). The shortest sync frequency is 5 minutes. This is not good enough.
I am now thinking about using the eMail app from CM10.1 .. which served me well on my old device but I really don't want to loose any of these nifty Samsung features (which I may already have lost because I installed swiftkey from playstore .. don't know yet).
Anyone have some tips for me on how to proceed?

Google has stopped providing exchange mail for private and personal Gmail (starting February 2013), so you can use the build in Gmail account in your phone or to set IMAP.

That was for "additions," not legacy users. I'm still using GMail ActiveSync with my N2 and Note 10.1 Does anyone know if it's carried-over based on GMail account or only by individual device? For example, if I got a SGS4 would ActiveSync that's currently working on my N2 continue to work on other phones I swap after that?

Yep .. either switch to outlook.com, use a software that can do imap idle (K9Q i guess .. never really got into that) or do it like i do it right now .. live with the 5 minute delay in the standard email client and do the syncing for calendar, contacts etc. via gmail account.
At least this is my solution for today
Actually I'm using a hacked client from CM10.1 .. to not have to enter the PIN so often. The thing is that all Samsung stuff is lost .. like in-mail translations .. this is quite a pity .. I really hope for a security patched version soon. Oh .. to clarify .. the patch is not for my googlemails of course .. but for the other exchange account I have to set up.

I9505 Unlocked email app issue

Hello,
I am having problems with the stock Email application and the outlook.com MS exchange active sync connection.
All is working well: contacts sync, tasks, calendar, push email but the sending of emails is the issue.
When I try to send an email a small popup message appears: Retrieving account information... and nothing happens.
I have tried some 3rdparty apps to check if there is something wrong in my outlook.com account and nothing is wrong.
I would like to use the stock email app but sending email seems to be having issues.
I have tried clearing the data of the Email app, deleting/adding the MS Exchange account again but the issue persists.
Phone is on Android 4.3, non-rooted.
Having the same exact problem and have not found any answer and yet I can add the account to my s2 and my wife's note 2 and it works fine but not on my s4. Workaround for now is to use the outlook.com app.

RE:
I have solved this issue very easily
1. Clear Data of stock Samsung Email App and disable notifications for it
2. Clear data for Exchange Service and disable notifications for it.
For 1. and 2. go to Application Manager->ALL
3. Remove account microsoft exchange.... from Accounts
4. Install stock Android 4.4 email apk (attached)
5. Install Exchange Service apk for the stock Android 4.4 email app (attached)
6. Open stock Android Email app (not Samsung one) and create new account as Exchange
Details for outlook.com exchange server:
username: [email protected]
server: dub-m.hotmail.com
port: 443 (default)
Security type: SSL/TLS
Configure then push settings, signature etc.
Do you need root to be able to do that.

Thanks, @mmuntean2! This worked great on my T889 (T-Mobile Note 2). And here I was thinking I was the only one with this issue.

Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
RE:
There is no need to root for this to work.
The only bad thing is that when you create a new contact you will not get the option to add it to exchange server connection created by this method.
Also this stock email app does not have (or I could not find it) the option to select all mail, empty trash.
Really sucks that you cannot add contacts to exchange ./.. Its really not a fix, just another workaround for the stock Samsung email exchange does not work and I would suggest sending an email to Samsung Customer support outlining the problem as it seem that there may be a few of us experiencing the " Retrieving account information" error upon sending an email. Outlook App on play store allows adding contacts but it is a rather poor lay out.
RE:
I've talked with Samsung. After doing some Clear Data thing as suggested by the chat operator I've told them that it's still not working and repeated almost 4 times that on 3rd party applications everything is ok, but the ***** from the chat answered to contact the email provider and hanged the conversation.
Great CS from Samsung....
I had the same response from Samsung. Need more people to let samsung know about the problem

I just updated to Android 4.3 and now have this problem
I think there is something wrong with how the stock email app handles certificates. As I was trying to reset my email I get a certificate error. I've done a factory reset and it still doesn't fix the problem.
I wonder if someone could post samsung 4.2.2 versions of these apk´s so we could test
Solved with KitKat
Problem seems to be solved since Android 4.2.2 !

[Q] Anyone been successful setting up an Exchange account?

Has anyone been successful setting up an Exchange Account with their new note 4? I am using the settings I have always used before and I keep getting an authentication error. Even my IT department is baffled. . . .
Yes, try adding a \ to the front of your exchange username. Ie: \[email protected]
Sent from my SM-N910P using XDA Free mobile app
Yeah. . . did that. No success. I have not spend 2 hours with Samsung and my IT department and no one can get this to work. Very strange and very frustrating!
I've been able to add 1 account (a free outlook.com email) with no problems.
I have another (an alma mater university email hosted on Office365.) that failed exactly as you described. Settings were correct. It still failed to authenticate.
I checked to see if it would authenticate my work email, which it worked, but I refused to give it admin privileges because they have onerous PIN requirements. So it never actually downloaded the email, but it did complete the setup process.
Maybe the app is trying to connect on the wrong port? That's the only setting missing from the app.
Ready for Samsung dumbness . . . After 2 hours with Samsung tech support, we finally installed a third party email app that worked fine with our exchange servers. . . Samsung's response. I guess your email is incompatible with our email program. . . that's too bad. . .
No promise to look into it or correct it.
New phone. . .native phone app won't work. . . Even my old Touchpad running cm9 can use this email server. Way to go Sammy!!!!!!
Worked just fine for me. I have the MX record of a private domain name registered with Office365 from Microsoft and mine worked without a hitch. It is all in the way those responsible for the Exchange server set it up. Some require domain specified, some don't require the slash, etc. If they have their autodiscover record set up correctly in DNS all you should need is your email address and password.
I will take it up with my IT department next week, but I find it odd that both Mail Wise and Nine can access the server with no trouble.
Working fine for my hosted Exchange.
Problem solved.
I have Samsung s5 with 4.4.2 that my email works.
And copied the settings to my note 4.

I use MS Office 365 for Small Business and have a private business domain name for both my website & email (same one). It took me a little bit of time but I was able to set it up on the native Samsung email app. On my S3 all I had to do was enter my email address & password and it quickly set up, Note 4 was a little more work. None of my administrator settings have been changed (I'm the administrator) so apparently the native app has had changes made to it.
I will mention that I briefly had a LG 3 and it would not set up my MS Exchange email through its native app. I called LG tech support and they couldn't do it either. Only way I could set it up was through a 3rd part email app K9.
This time I set up my GMail & Yahoo accounts through the native app in addition to the MS Exchange account whereas on my S3 I was using the GMail & Yahoo installed apps. Everything works fine.

We had a client with a similar problem with Exchange and LG3. The solution there was to TURN OFF SMS sync. Or to be more exact, setup Exchange with SMS sync off.
Not sure if that same problem exists with the Note 4s, but worth a try.
Are any of you using "push" as your sync setting? I used it on my Note 3 and it worked fine without much battery drain. On my Note 4 Exchange Services never lets the device sleep. Interestingly, my N10.1-2014 just started doing the same thing after a firmware update. I'm trying to figure out if it's something on the device side or server side that may have changed.

Solved my issue.
Sprint Note 4 -- I have 2 Exchange Activesync accounts. Both worked concurrently on my Note 2.
One was already set up and working on my Note 4 without issue. This one is hosted by the MS365 platform. The second account throws the authentication error using the stock email app. This one is hosted by the corporate Outlook.com division. I got it working using Nine in less than a minute.
