[Q] My nexus 7 went down from 16gb to 8gb - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello to all,
I have a big problem. I own Nexus 7 (2012) version with 16gb, but when I flashed KitKat 4.4.2 (KOT49H) via Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.7.9, my Nexus went down to 8gb version (actually, I got only 5.9gb free space).
How is this posible? To went from 16gb model to 8gb model and most important, how do I get back to original 16gb of storage?
edit:haha, I don't know how but solution was this: I did full wipe and format data via cwm. Then it said that I dont have OS installed. So, again I used Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.7.9, only now I flashed 4.4 KRT16S. And on my biggest surprise, now I got 27gb free space. I loaded it with movies and it's real space.
I thought that I know something about android, but now I'm confused very much. Merry Christmas to me with this extra gift
P.S. And to all of you ofcourse.
P.P.S. Would somebody like to try this also? Maybe you get extra 16gb, too!

Do a search. This isn't a new phenomenon; it only happens to rooters. Somehow, an undersized ext4 filesystem gets created in the userdata partition (which is substantially larger).
The exact origin of the problem is not clear, but is probably a bug in the bootloader.
The solution is always the same - to backup the entire tablet and recreate the /data filesystem (either by having the bootloader do it via a fastboot command or using "mke2fs" with a custom recovery).
While it is technically possible for a device to come from the factory this way, I highly doubt that is what occurred. And no, this isn't some kind of voodoo magic - if you can build a 29 GB filesystem on your device, that's only because there is a 32 GB flash chip in there.
In any event, if you look in the kernel log (search for messages with "mmc" in them) shortly after the tablet has booted, youll see the kernel identify the chip and it's capacity. That's a whole lot easier than speculatively unloading and reloading many GB of files.

I'll hope that I will get screenshots available during this evening, because tablet is not with me for the moment.

I'll try this voodoo method with friend's nexus 7 which is 8gb version and post results. It is really very strange that I manage to do this. I know that somebody much smarter then me will already came up with this findings, but I live in a hope  I hope that I accidentally somehow unlocked disc space. I already got theory that all nexus 7 (wifi) devices are the same in hardware and that they are only with software locked to 8, 16 or 32gb

4.2 update issue

I used an ota file some one posted to update to 4.2 and ran into a problem. I have a 16gb model and now only have the 8gb storage available. It seems the ota posted was for a 8 GB nexus and it possibly repartitioned my nexus to match the 8 GB nexus. I tried to search for a solution and couldn't find anything. Anybody know how to fix this.

That have nothing to do with the OTA. Mine is a 32GB and used the OTA posted all fine. OTAs are universal (Nasaki) regardless of emmc capacity.

What they said.
First, a non-compatible OTA would not work since it would fail checksum validation. Second, the updates are universal for the model (ie: same for 8,16 or 32). Third, the only low level flashing this update does is on bootloader and boot. It simply patches the files in /system and leaves userdata alone. So it's highly unlikely what you're saying happened. Or if it did, it was most likely due to something else. If your system's filesystem is really that messed up, you might need to reflash it to stock to get fixed. But I would suggest triple checking to make sure you aren't wrong.

[SOLVED]4.3 messed up my internal storage

So after spending a whole afternoon flashing 4.3 onto the N7 via fastboot and finally getting root to work, I connect my N7 to the PC and get the shock of my life to see my internal storage has shrunk to 6GB...it currently says I only have 5GB free out of 6GB...is there any way to fix this ? My N7 is the 3G, 32GB model running 4.3 with stock kernel, twrp and rooted.
Solution : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2033692
Just edit the steps to adapt to our Nexus 7 PM me if you need help with that
Anyone ?
We've had that with the first custom roms. The only way to fix that, that I know know of, is to flash back to older stock rom, verify the storage is right, and try again.
I would download the 4.3 rom from another source and/or verify the MD5 package.
Just for laughs, perhaps you could try to reflash the kernel (which is what I think gives the reading).
That or you are the only person with a 6gb N7.
Well, I talked to two other people and they said this is bound to happen with flash happy morons like me who go straight for the IMGs...will try re-doing from step 1, or else I'll go back to 4.2.2...oh and 1 more piece of info...as I was done with flashing 4.3, my sd was formatted as well...
This has also happened to me on more then one occasion when flashing back to stock would show only 6/27.5GB available. Rebooting into recovery and reformatting fixes it.

[Q] Using an ext4 formatted MicroSD

Hello everyone,
Before anyone tries to point out that this thread has similar predecessors, let me clarify. I have checked the other threads, and they are either outdated, or do not apply to my case.
I use the SGH-i337 with mk2 firmware, rooted with superSU installed and binary counter reset via TriangleAway.
So here's the situation:
Since I have quite a bit of music, I purchased a 32GB MicroSD that I use with the device. The thing is, since there is so much music, and I can only use FAT32 out of the box, data loss is quite severe. I end up with a quarter of my library virtually unusable (tracks blend in with each other, random segments are inserted and removed from files).
As most of us know, EXT4 has none of these problems, nor does it have that 4GB limit per file that FAT has, but the OEM rom simply does not support (or rather blocks support of) the filesystem format. I have thought about switching to a custom rom, but the problem is that AT&T locked this down pretty well even on mk2, so that the bootloader is virtually unchangeable.
Could someone help me with this? Also, if there is a "safe" way of unlocking the bootloader, I'd be up to that as well.
Thanks before hand.
There is no way to unlock the boot loader.
Have you tried the exfat format?

:/
Too bad
I have tried using exfat, and although the results are quite a bit better, there is still file loss occurring.

Reclaiming Storage

I have the AT&T version running OptimusG3 v1.4.1 with Dorimanx.
This is the best setup I've ever had on a phone. I want to keep Optimus and Dorimanx (I also use Philz Touch recovery).
Having said that, somehow along the way of flashing roms, I somehow messed up the partition so that my phone thinks it is a 24 gb version instead of 32.
Now if this were my old Sammy Note 2, I could flash it till I got it right with little worries. But I've bricked the G2 so many times that I would rather not do the trial and error dance at this time.
What would be my best option for reclaiming that extra storage?

There's no 24gb version of the phone. If you have something like 24.80GB of space available
thate because you have the 32gb model. The rest is reserved as a system partition and some other stuff. No you can't change it, especially with a locked bootloader.
Now if you have about 10GB of space available just search for the fix, in this forum it'd very easy to find.

LG G2 Flash help?

I have a D802 with 32GB. I previously flashed ROMs on my LG G2 years ago, decided to move away from the custom ROMs after I semi-bricked it last year, it's now updated with fresh firmware, Lollipop 5.0.2.
However when plugged into my PC it says: Used Space: 1.02 GB Free Space: 10.6 GB
Should it not be closed to 32GB free??
Is there any software I can use to find/delete/free missing partitions?
I'm a little out of the loop at the moment, any help appreciated.
Don't rely on the pc for this - the MTP protocol can be weird at times.
What does Settings->Storage say on the phone?

It says
Total Space: 32GB
Available: 9.60GB
Then there is a huge part of the bar in red which represents Misc: 21.40GB......
Doesn't sound good. On my 32 GB phone, misc is only 7.69 GB.
Maybe you flashed a 16 GB rom at one time? It has been known to resize the data partition.
There is a fix in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470207&page=34
However, the fix is a bit dangerous. Ask yourself: are you feeling lucky?

Not only am I not feeling lucky but I have nothing to lose. That looks complicated, surely there's an easier way?
So first I need to downgrade from Lollipop to KitKat (tutorial?).
I'm sorry, I don't know more than that. I never had the problem myself.
