C6906 Root Generic 290 - Xperia Z1 General

Hi all, I have a C6906 and I was wondering if its possible to have root on the latest 290 firmware?
I've searched many friends but I didn't find a clear answer. Most of the answer required me to use the .534 firmware and root it. Then, upgrade it to 257 and then to 290. However, there isn't a generic .534 generic firmware for C6906 in the main sticky post.
so again my question is can C6906 generic 290 be rooted? It would be great if you can post some steps.
Thank you in advance.

[HOW TO] Update to 257 and preserve root

O.K guys...
This is quite simple
Download generic 534 (I used for central Europe)
DOWNLOAD FTF
Flash it via Flashtool and root with Kingo or root this way :
tnx @schickel
This method works great. If you don't trust these tools(Kingo root), use Root MANY ANDROID from Bin4ry. I've used this tool without any problems on the downgraded firmware.

Then boot ROM (you will need to restart your device two times to root proper) and you'll get OTA warning you have 257 firmware ready for update.
Download update and let the device flash the update.
And that's it
Now you have newest firmware and you root is here as well...
See ya

I'm not talking theoretically - I just did that

Thanks.
Not everyone gets the OTA, some need to do it via pccompanion.
But its great news to know the OTA update keeps root.

That's the point of this thread.
You'll get OTA if you use generic or world FTF.
That's why I said - first flash central Europe (for EU countries) and you'll get OTA info about 257 firmware.
I couldn't update by OTA too, then I did all this and now I can use OTA.
I was receiving OTA info but couldn't update - so I know not everyone can update that way.

Yes I agree with you. But some will want to stay with region specific or branded firmware. There are other methods for them, this is good for those people who will want to flash to central Europe first.
I good find and thanks for confirming OTA keeps root.
I agree, of course
Thanks @Toledo_JAB for moving thread to right place.

What for other methods do we have without unlocking bootloader and flashing other ftf?
Sent from my C6903 using xda app-developers app
So will this require wiping or can I install generic ROM over branded ROM?
EDIT: ROOT IS STILL HERE! WOOHOO!!!
OTA on phone preserves root, no matter which .534 firmware u have.
If u update from phone it preserves root
Make sure to switch to SuperSU app before u update, from any other superuser, works best

I didn't force it. I was running the .534 DK firmware and the update notification has always been there through the sony software update app. I chose the DK firmware over the hong kong firmware because I didin't like the NFC logo always on there and I'd rather my phone say 4G instead of LTE.
You may have to wait for the OTA! Not sure if there is a way to force it on the phone unless someone gets the update.zip after they download it and you flash it in stock recovery? not sure as I've never entered stock recovery yet. my BL still locked.
Damn it I want a nexus 5... but I'm afraid I'll get drunk or something and accidentally wash it like i do the Z1 all the time

Same here. I just tried the OTA update and got the update failed after the reboot.
EDIT:
Maybe because I rooted with using Vroot. From what I've read, people had success using Kingo root. I tried the update 4x so far after Vroot. I'll edit this post again after rooting using Kingo root and see if the update will go through or not.

Hi Funky,
thanks for that tipp, will try out asap. But exactly which FTF you choosed, this one:
C6903 14.1.G.1.534 Central Europe1276-4314_R2A
Cheers
Yes, that's the firmware I have used.
As I said, I used that firmware just because my original firmware couldn't update via OTA.
I got info about new firmware but couldn't update until I first flashed that unbranded firmware.

We need the .69 FTF for SGP512! (Wifi 32GB)

I have the SGP512, which is the tablet with 32GB and Wifi only. In order for any owner of this Z2 Tablet model to use the newly discovered root exploit, you have to downgrade to a firmware below .402, like the .69 firmware. Sadly, I can not find any FTF for this model. Unless someone has this file somewhere, we can not root our tablets. Does anyone have any FTF for the SGP512 below .402?
EDIT: YOU CAN USE THE SGP511 FTF. SORRY FOR MY DUMB ASS STUPIDITY.
Not sure if the SGP511 and 512 share the same firmware, but as I said in the Root Exploit thread, I found the .69 version for the SGP511 on a Russian forum:
http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=567703&st=20
Direct download link: https://cloud.mail.ru/public/7f09c14ca037/SGP511_17.1.A.2.69_[Global].ftf
I have no clue if it's a valid file, so use at your own risk!

Do I understand that the version doesn't really matter (since we are only using it to run the root exploit and then immediately flashing the latest, e.g. .402)?

They do NOT use the same firmware. My SGP512 would NOT accept the SGP511 FTF. I tried several times.
EDIT: That russian .69 FTF would not work on my SGP512, but I made a dumb assumption. I tried the .36 SGP511 FTF and that worked just fine. My SGP512 is now rooted!

As long as the firmware came out before .402 (meaning .69, .55, or .36) the root exploit will work, and then we can update back to .402. It doesn't matter which firmware it is, as long as it isn't .402.

So the 511 firmware does indeed work for the 512? That's good to know. I have the 512 and haven't tried this yet.
I was going to ask if someone who had succeeded in rooting could follow this guide:
[GUIDE] Download ANY firmware customization from Sony & create an FTF with Flashtool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2334653
That guide seems to suggest you can change your build.prop to trick the Sony PC Companion software to download any firmware you want.

Use this download: https://mega.co.nz/#!AgQw2LCT!6FQR4_DZ_-odkXYrCzRWa4lx4ZyGviWLKOzPdmm2ZFc
It's the .36 FTF for the SGP511 which WILL work on the SGP512. I used it on my SGP512 and successfully rooted it using the exploit.
I have NEVER been able to access any file on Mega. Just spent an evening on multiple computers running multiple browsers and, at best, have 57% of the file. Is there any other host?

I know this sounds stupid, but can you double-check that you still have 32gb of memory showing on your device with the "SGP511_17.1.A.2.36_1281-8033.ftf" flashed. I'm paranoid it could get messed up as that is for teh 16gb model! :fingers-crossed:

Hello,
I flashed the generic Singapore ftf and rooted using towelroot.
At first I thought all went well, but there are some issues.
1: the powerbutton sometimes seems unresponsive and doesn't give me the lockscreen.
2: Charging the phone takes much longer then before (could be a good thing though)
3: Battery drain ( mentioned before in this forum and many other), but i see the percentages drop when using the phone even when it's charging
4: The phone gets really hot. When testing the camera app I got the message that i have to wait for the phone to cool down.
Never had any message like this before.
Are there others having the same issues??
Perhaps I did something wrong during the flashing and rooting
Many tnx

no I ment no improvements.
I will try to flash again. Hoping it gets better
got this rom yesterday and no power drain jet
Looks like a bug fix....
I flashed the rom again.
Before I did I made a backup to save the important stuff.
I didn't uncheck data when using flashtool so I could start with a fresh rom. Rooted the phone with easyroot like Kingvortex (tnx) described.
So far so good! No excessive heat or batterydrain.
Again very happy with me XZ.
I guess I had to many junk on the phone interfering with a nice working ROM.
Please kindly upload on the other server like hugefiles.net or putlocker.
Thanks
