I currently have a iPhone 5s with a defective home button. I was going to return my phone today and purchase a Note 3, I found myself holding off because of the impending Nexus 5 announcement. I am a huge fan of the Nexus series, with their stock android experience, fast software updates and premium design, they always seem like my go to android phone. The downfall to the Nexus is that I would have to give up Verizon and there awesome LTE coverage (the only carrier with full LTE coverage in my area) for AT&T which is terrible for dropping calls and have next to no LTE in the area. Even worse would be T-Mobile which has NO SERVICE at all in some parts of Long Island. Also in past experiences I find myself hating touch-wiz within a few days of owning a Samsung device. But the Note 3 is the must cutting edge phone on the market and that 1080p screen looks amazing.
I find myself torn between the stock android, awesome design and rom friendly Nexus 5 with poor cell coverage on AT&T or the cutting edge, 5.7 1080p monster Note 3 with crappy gingerbread looking touch-wiz and knox security that makes even roming the phone a potential issue, but with the ability to have full LTE coverage on Verizon.
Any opinions from owners of the Note 3?
Wait for the note 3 developer edition, flash whatever you like. Crappy service is not tolerable to me.

I too am waiting for the Developer Edition of the Note 3. I will jump on that. I am really not interested in messing with the bootloader if I don't have too.

What's the point of the developer addition if you're not gonna mess with the boot loader.

I'm on MetroPCS and I want to move from an S3 to a Note 3. Now I've heard there are problems with KNOX so I don't know if this should be a deciding factor or not.
Should I settle for a Note 2 since it would be cheaper or should I move on to a NOte 3. It seems finding one that's 4G and region free is impossible these days.
Has anyone here successfully used an unlocked Note 3 on TMobile for LTE. If so, can you link me the store.

Better asking over on the Note 3 T-Mo forum
I recently became the proud new owner of a SM-900A NC2 note 3. I had a galaxy mega that broke, and my insurance plan replaced it with the note 3. I was actually excited at first. I had been somewhat regretting my choice and wishing I had gone with the note 3 to begin with. But then I discovered that there is no root option for the NC2 update. Nothing. The same was true of my galaxy mega for a long time (SGH-I527). With both of these devices, I noticed that some models were easily rooted/modded, and others (mine) took ages to get a functioning root.
My plan is to be an early adopter of the Note 4 when it's released in September. I don't want to be caught in the same situation where I own one of the models that is very difficult to hack. I want to buy the most open model that can be used on the AT&T network with LTE (Samsung seems keen to release developer editions for verizon, but not with LTE).
Right now, the most open model of the Note 3 seems to be N9005. I'm not going to outright buy a new note 3 that I plan on replacing in 3 months. But when that time comes, are there some rules of thumb that I should know about to choose the most open model? From my limited experience, I've learned that buying through AT&T is a recipe for slavery. But, there are many non-AT&T options.
So, what's the best choice? an International model? A different LTE carrier's model unlocked? Or, is it too early to tell?
Thanks for the help,
Michael

Thanks, but I don't plan on re-purchasing the note 3. Do you think the same will be true of the Note 4? Assuming there's no LTE developer edition, will the international version provide the best chance at freedom? Is it too early to speculate?

As long as you get the qualcomm version you'll be fine i guess
Isnt it just that the n9005 is more common.
So theres more people playing around with it and ending up with solutions?
And yeah Samsung's attitude against customizing are terrible.
The Note3 will be my last Samsung electronic(s) b.t.w.

n9005 is the most common and powerful , here in kuwait the stupid exynos version not even released cause people tired of it laggy and fake octa core and no one fancy owning 3g phone anymore
I currently use a Nexus 5 and 2nd gen Nexus 7 (wi-fi only). I love both devices especially the Nexus 5 which I use quite often in Canada (home base), US (on T-Mobile), Europe and Australia. I'm thinking seriously about moving to the Note 4 with the thought I might be able to consolidate on one device. I really like vanilla Android and being able to get the latest stable OS ASAP. I used to have both my Nexus 5 and 7 rooted but don't anymore as corporate apps required I unroot and I've learned to live without root and xposed and all that good stuff.
My greatest concern about moving to something like the Note 4 is losing the very extensive 3G and LTE band support that the Nexus 5 has. I don't believe the carrier-specific models of the Note 4 are yet known but I'm assuming to get UMTS and LTE band 4 support that I'd have to get the T-Mobile model and unlock it. However I'm also a little confused as I read somewhere that with the Note 3, the SM-N900T (sold by T-Mobile) and the SM-N900W8 (apparently sold by all Canadian carriers) all have pentaband support albeit just with carrier-specific ROMs although this thread seems to suggest the only way to get band 4 support is with the T-Mobile model.
I'd appreciate any advice from knowledgeable users about this. I'm sure there must be others who want to move to the Note 4 but want pentaband support including LTE where possible.
Thanks.

Nothing is better than Nexus 5 until Nexus 6
as u know u can feel freedom with nexus device
don't upgrade to note 4 buy it beside nexus 5
Yes I must admit that the Nexus devices are fantastic. I had the Nexus 4 and also the Galaxy Nexus. Nexus 6 will be interesting.
Unless you need S Pen (as I do), don't move from the Nexus land of quick updates and stock Android.
Differs from person to person. I'm moving from the Nexus 5 mainly because of the smaller screen, no expandable storage and subpar battery life.
For me, I say sell the Nexus 5

This sums up my thoughts quite well.
I love the Nexus 5 for its simplicity (it just works, no crashes, no hassle) and the sheer speed of it. However, I'm getting very frustrated with the battery life, it gets me through a day, but I have to keep an eye on what I have running (no location, no Google Now, etc) which is annoying, and I have to limit my use sometimes if I know I won't be able to charge it until the late evening.
The lack of memory is also a killer for me. I don't think I will ever get a device with only 32GB of storage again, I store a lot of stuff on my phone, which leaves me with very little free storage, and I end up juggling what I have saved/installed on the phone. 64GB would be an absolute minimum of storage, but ideally I'd want a microSD slot.
The camera on the N5 is decent, but there's been a few times where it's annoyed me with poor performance, slow use time, and poor focus performance. It can take some pretty nice photos most of the time, but an upgrade would be definitely welcome!
Then there's the size, I actually really like the size of the N5, but I'm just tempted to try something larger and see how I get on with it. The same goes for the S-pen, I may find that I don't use it at all, but then again I might find it something that I really enjoy having.
So overall... I'll probably swap the N5 out for the N4.
I have the HTC One M7 and this is the last time I am getting a phone that does not have removeable battery(I dont like power bank) and memory. I will be moving to the N4. BUT I will dearly miss the two front speakers as I like to Skype and video chat on it. I dont like headphones.
When the Note 3 was released there was a pretty big difference between the two phones that initially made flashing roms from International on TMobile - wifi wouldn't work intially - internal SD Card was wiped frequently on flashing and a bunch of other issues made flashing International ROMS on TMOBILE phones difficult at first. (this was fixed later but it took a while)
The S5 was a lot different - I am not a technician or Developer by any means - but as a novice looking in - it almost seemed like International and Tmobile mobile note 3's were almost entirely different phones - whereas the S5's were almost identical.
I realize I maybe oversimplifying this - but doing so to make a point. I am very curious about what will happen with the Note 4. I doubt if there is any way to know until both phones are out and Devs start creating roms - but I wonder if the NOTE 4 will be more like it was with the NOTE 3 or will they be more like it was with the S5 ? Samsung will never listen to me but I think you know how I would vote -
looking forward to the NEXT BIG THING....
Not sure if you look at gsmarena or phonescoop, but kind of like the GN3, GS3 etc. The GN4 US variant has Q-com Snapdragon CPU, Int'l has Exynos (sp?) So some hardware is similar.
But T-mo variants vs other, like before T-mo rom has wifi call capability. Others do not.

I realize that WIFI Calling is a major difference between international and TMOBILE - but I was more interested in the file structure of the phone and how wifi - or data works - not sure the reason, but it originally was difficult to flash International ROMS on the TMOBILE Note 3 - data wifi didn't work - data didn't work - and often the Internal SD card was wiped. When the S5 was released, the phones were so similar none of these problems happened. I was flashing International ROMS in the first day or two that the S5 was released.
I am not a dev so I can't speak to the reasons why it was this way on the NOte 3 - but except for the obvious differences (wifi Calling for example) I am only hoping that the Note 4 is more like it was with the S5 than it was with the note 3.
Lets make sure first that Tmobile keep its bootloader unlocked!
kinda like papabear was saying, i believe the S5 international vs US both had snapdragon, which made them very compatible. the GN3 had exynos/snapdragon, and that made them quite different. exynos didn't have near as much development.
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=6033&idPhone2=6434
The GS4 was really good with cross compatibility. The T-Mo and i9505 variants were very similar, both had the same CPU, etc. You could flash the same ROMs but not radios/modems or bootloaders. My concern is if the International Note 4 will work with T-Mo LTE since it doesn't have the 1700 band.
Dont forget about band 12.
Do we know If the international version N910F supportd Tmobile LTE? I think I saw a video on phonedog and the Josh was using an international version with a tmo sim card.
Any confirmation?

As far as I know, on the international models it doesnt say 4G LTE . It displays either LTE or 4G next to the reception bars.

I haven't used Samsung phone for a while, but from past experience I'm pretty sure that you only need to flash appropriate radio/kernel to get data and WiFi working again. just my 2 cents.
I've got my eyes on the note 4 and thinking about getting one to play with, I have Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 2013, yeah, I know I'm a Nexus junkie

That actually wasn't true with the NOTE 3 which is the main reason I did this thread in the first place. When the NOTE 3 was released, if you flashed an INTERNATIONAL ROM WIFI and DATA and blue tooth did not work at all. Someone eventually came up with a fix which had to be flashed anytime you flashed an international rom - I don't know why this was necessary - it just was - it was almost as if there was some major difference in file structure and programming on the International version versus the TMOBILE or Canadian Version.
The S5 wasn't like that at all - Virtually every International ROM worked beautifully from the get go on TMOBLILE phones. So - the NOTE 3 must have had something that was done differently on International Versions of the phone compared to TMOBILE and Canadian Versions - and I am hopeful that THE NOTE 4 doesn't do that.
So - I am excited about the Note 4 - can't wait for it to be released - I know all of our questions will be answered then - looking forward to it!

Exynos doesn't have anything to do this. ALL of these phones come in both versions - Snapdragon and Exnynos - the note 3, S5 and NOte 4 each have both variations.
anyone on a tmobile snapdragon note 3 had problems with wifi and data when trying to flash roms from the international snapdragon phones Note 3.... I honestly don't know why the NOTE 3 had this issue and the S5 didn't - but it doesn't have anything to do with Exynos - but fingers crossed that the NOTE 4 behaves more like the S5 than the Note 3 in this regard - it will make flashing much easier.
(PS - there is no evidence that TMOBILE will lock bootloader. ATT and Verizon will for sure - both have said as much - every phone ATT and VERIZON releases are locked (except the developer version on Verizon) but TMOBILE has not given any indication they will be locking the bootloader - I don't expect they will lock the bootloader on the note 4 - we will find out for sure in a few weeks...

If odin is still the tool to flash samsung official ROM, then you should be able to choose what to flash and what not to. well, i might be wrong but thats how i did on AT&T Captivate, Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Nexus. I remember that i've been switching between international and US version ROMs with just ROM without flashing any radios. Samsung may changed ROM structure, that I have no idea.
