Galaxy S4 not charging - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, i'm having problems with the galaxy S4 I bought(used).
When I first got it, it installed tons of updates, i'd say about 1 gig worth of updates, everything was ok, but the end of the day, it didn't quite want to charge, sometimes charged when plugged into the wall-charger, sometimes now, I tried connecting it via usb to pc, that works every time, it charges from there.
When I turn the phone off, and hook up the charger, the phone start vibrating like every 5 seconds.
Also, when I try to hook up something over USB OTG cable, the phone says that something connected, and a second later, the device doesen't work(360 controller for example).
My question is, could it be Software related, I've read people having charging problems after 4.3 update.
Or, could it be Hardware related, and I have to return it to the sender?

The phone vibrates when the phone is off and the phone is starting it's boot process (i think) so i doubt any software has an effect on the phone before it's booted, i'm thinking the boot is failing (due to power fault) and then restarting every 5 seconds? I would try and find someone with a different charger and battery that you could swap with to rule out faulty battery/charger.

Different charger had no effect, but I got plenty of phones, I'll see if any of the batteries have similiar voltages and physically can fit.
I'll keep you updated.

I had problems with the board that has the connector ... warranty covered, put a new board and new battery ... but it seems that your problem is a little different

Okay, I tested with Galaxy Note battery, didn't start to charge that either.
Okay, this is really mind**** for me.
No other charger works, but if I plug the usb-cable from S4 to Galaxy Tab 7.0 wall adapter, it starts charging, and the Tab charges with s4's wall adapter, the specs of the adapters are the same, both 5V 2A.

Try same s4 wall charger with a different usb cable. A lot of stock usb white s4 cable have been reported as dammaged, some experiment issues on charging (my case, it allows less amperage tha a generic cable with the same samsung original charger), other have experimented issues on flashing failures (most of them apreciated after flashing process).

I tried different combos, Galaxy nexus usb cable in s4 wallplug, Galaxy Note's usb-cable in S4 wallplug, also tried s4's usb-cable with other wallplugs, also HTC Wildfire to add to the list.
Galaxy Tab 7 wallplug worked with all the above usb cables, and the s4 wallplug with s4 usb cable charges all the phones, and s4 wallplug with tab 7.0 usb cable charges the tab.
This is so confusing to me.

After test this : " Galaxy nexus usb cable in s4 wallplug, Galaxy Note's usb-cable in S4 wallplug" and working fine with usb ports, you should consider that wall charger is just damaged... You should try with a Samsung s4 wall charger from a friend... Other non Samsung wall chargers will not change with more than 0,5 Aor 0,75 A because s4 recognizes Samsung chargers.

[Q] Charging on AC but shows USB

Initially my phone started to charge slow since a week with the original charger and cable came with N4 in the box. I googled and got to check in the battery settings as if it shows AC or USB. Its showing USB and charging quite slow. I flashed yesterday factory image after deleting everything but still it shows as USB.
One more thing, when i connect the charger it shows AC and after a few seconds it says USB and sticks to it.
After connecting the charger it acts as the charger is powered on and off 3-4 times whereas i dont turn the power off/on.
Any help.

Happens to me as well. I even got a new USB cable from Flipkart and tried with other chargers. Same thing happens. I googled enough for this and find no feasible solutions.
It seems to be a hardware issue. but the weird things is it initially recognizes as AC but then after few seconds change to USB.
Further, after pinning the cable, phone reacts as the power is on-off-on-off 3-4 times.
Please help.

It might be a defective cable. I had the same thing happen to me (oem cable and charger), but changing the cable solved it for me. Pretty poor build quality if you ask me

i was using the original USB cable that came with the phone and experienced the same issues. after changing the USB cable it is fixed for me.

i can confirm that it is the cable. just go buy a new one but have in mind that you need a quality cable. the reason is that the usb 2 standard outputs about 1 amp, so most cable is designed with that in mind. the nexus 4 charger output is 1.2 amp so if the charger cannot output 1.2 amp it outputs lower amp thus the connection with the charger is recognized as usb. if you go and buy a quality cable then you will have no problems. i just use the cable of my old phone (optimus black ) and it works like a charm. another cable that i have make the usb thingy.
the lg cable of nexus 4 and all the new lg's is ****. it break down very easily. a friend of mine bought an lg g pad 8.3 and the cable died the 4 time that he used it!!!
P.S. when i say quality cable i don't mean a 30 euroes or dollars cable. i mean a cable by a known brand and not an ebay 1 euro cable. that didn't worked for me. if i knew a brand of cable that worked i would but i use an old lg cable
hope i helped

This happens to me as well but I don't think it is the cable. When mine started charging slowly & on USB with the official one I bought one that was made by Amazon which was fine for a while but then it changed to USB charging
If you have a custom kernel that supports forcing AC charging, give that a try. I think the latest Hells Core/Doctor kernels offer that feature. Unless this feature is on, my phone thinks my car charger is a USB charger. It might be, I'm not sure, but I know that the kernel has a feature to override this recognition and extract the full average from the adapter (in my case, 1A).
I bought the nexus charger off of Google.com and now it always shows charging (AC) and it charge at a good speed

I sometimes sit with the same problem. I use the Samsung provided cable. If I do use the phone for whatever I loose charge. Doesn't matter if I use usb 2 or 3 ports. Some days it would charge, but very slow. If I do get it to charge via usb, then it takes +- 8 hours. I did pick up that after a "usb" charge, the battery life sucks bad. Then I will barely get 12 hours and then I barely used my phone. When charging via the normal charger I get 2 days of life with the battery
Would a computer USB port put out enough current to charge the phone well? Don't PC usb ports only supply 500ma, I was under impression phones needed a good 1A or more to charge correctly.
Sorry for the late awnser,
Im using the original cable. I didn't have any of these problems w/ my old galaxy s1 and other phones.

The cable works fine on other phones though?
The S5 has a bigger battery again over the S4 and my S4 only charged properly with the charger supplied.
I've tried charging my S5 with my wifes old S2 charger and it does but slowly. So always use the S5 dedicated one.
Also, USB trickle charges and the S5 is a power guzzler so the USB port wont give enough power to charge and use the phone at the same time. If in doubt then pub the phone in Ultra Power Saving mode while charging. Should charge quicker that way.
similar situation with my S5 mini DUOS.
I have an always on wall charger with 2 USB sockets, giving 2A.
I have used it with all of my previous phones without any problem.
now, it just wont do anything with the S5 mini, doesnt matter wether I use the original cable which came with the original wall charger, or any other. the phone ignores it

Trouble with charging---USB Port broken?

Since 4 Days i experienced something weird.
When i want to charge my Note 4 i connect the Fast Charger to it. It is recognized as Fast Charging devioce and the device starts loading. 5 seconds later the device stops charging, 1 sec after that it restarts charging. Then it stops after 3 seconds and then again it starts. Sometimes my note (instead of charging) opens the Gear Vr app or tells me it is connected with a dockingstation.
So i tried using my Galaxy s5 charger. the problem goes on...charging..stop..charging..stop...charging..stop..so i looked at my usb port and cleaned it....nothing..no dirt...with the s5 charger iam able to find a position in which the phone starts to charge.
any suggestions?

Try the Hama MO•38É.
The MO 38E has Quick Charging and Healthy Trickle Charging and is VERY ROBUST!
0-100% in just 35 Min for the Note 4 (don't blame me, if my information is wrong)
0-50 % in just 20 Minutes ☺☻
I don't want to advertise with it but i made good experience with the MO 38E!

This is a very weird issue. Best suggestion would be to bring it back to Samsung for repairs.
Before you send it back, try using a Blower or compressed air can to clean both the USB cable and the phone's micro USB port. Or maybe try a different Cable.
The problem sounds like a hardware issue because a) the second charger provides the same results, and b) there's a special position where charging commences - if I understood the OP right.
So I fear it's something like a bad soldering joint at the USB port. :/
Kenney: Try compressed air; maybe it's just a tiny fracture of metal sticking somewhere in the port.
this is why i use a Qi charger lol. nothing to break and the phone ports stay undamaged.

hy bro i am having the same problem that you mentioned so did you find a solution plz let me know.
This is a problem that is entirely too common on ANY phone that uses a micro USB socket for charging. The whole design of this type of socket is pathetically fragile and (imo) totally unsuitable for regular plugging in to.....
I have owned/do own several Galaxy devices, on 2 of them, the socket has failed and a 3rd device is showing early signs of the same failure.
My wife's current device is the Note 4 and mine is the S5....Both have this (stupid) micro USB socket......
For both of these devices, I have purchased a second battery and an external wall charger......simply because I DO NOT TRUST that the connectors in these phones will last the length of the contracts they were purchased under.....

This is also happening to me. Any solution to this?
Done some research.......
The USB socket is directly soldered to the surface of a 'daughterboard' (a separate board connected to the main/motherboard by a flat 'flex' cable).
The connectors on the socket are *tiny* and totally unsuitable for hand soldering, so the entire daughterboard will need replacing.
I don't know how difficult it will be to replace the board, but if it's anything like the S5, the screen will have to be removed in order to access it.......A very delicate and none too easy part to remove..........
.......and if the board follows the same pattern as with the S2, there will be multiple variants of it, none of which is interchangeable...meaning you have to find the right one.
Most Samsung devices come with a 2 year warranty (at least in the EU) so my advice is to get a warranty repair......

okay so I think my USB port might just be broken.. because I tried with sky-high kernel also.. still says cable charging.. and it’s not even AC charging, it says USB even though it’s plugged into an outlet. I tried with multiple cables too..same thing. USB charging :/

Yep.....that does sound like a classic symptom of a port failure......
And as you mention custom kernels, I wouldn't count on Samsung repairing it under warranty.....you have probably tripped knox, so Samsung is likely to say 'not our problem'......

[Q] Galaxy S4 only charges in USB when plugged into wall

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-M919N running Android 4.4.4.
For the last 3 or 4 days, the phone is been charging in USB Charge even if it's plugged into a wall or car charger. I tried different wall and car chargers and different microUSB wires. All with the same results. Could it be the battery, the microUSB port or a software adjustment?
Thanks for your help!

Note 4 Not charging!!!

Hey
My Galaxy Note 4 was working fine until today when it stopped charging from the wall charger
Its only charging if I connect it to the PC or laptop
I have tried 3 different wall chargers
Its under warranty but I would like to avoid sending it to them as it takes weeks to get the phone back
kindly help!
Thank you
Were you using the OEM wall plug & cable?
If not, the charging current might be too much or too little and the cable might not like it either
