[Q] Stuck in twrp recovery after update - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Morning everÿone,
I am currently stuck in twrp recovery with a sprint lg g2. I factory reset my phone last night, and all was well. Accidentally clicked on the ota update that was showing it had downloaded. Phone rebooted into recovery. I have tried to restore from a backup I made last night after the hard reset. Phone says it was successful, I click reboot, comes right back up into recovery after the lg symbol.
I am new to android, so I am not familiar with how to use adb. I am fine with losing all the info that is on my phone, no biggie, just need the phone working again.
I have a zip saved to my phone, from when I was rooted before, which I tried to flash. It takes about 30 seconds, and then says that it failed.
Any help, pointers, directions would be amazing.
Also, have never used side loader, but have heard of people loading roms this way, to get back working.
Please and thank you

Great. thank you. I do not have adb access, if i go into advanced, and then terminal command, i have a list of folders, paths, something like that, that I can click on. which would I need to go to, in order to type in the command?
"Then you should be able to successfully reboot your phone via the TWRP menu option, or via a simple reboot command in adb.
If you DONT have ADB access (because of an early build of TWRP), you can simply use TWRP's awesome "terminal command" option to run the following:
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
You'll have to type that whole thing out, and be VERY careful with spaces and punctuation. One wrong letter and you could nuke your phone.
After that finishes, you can reboot and continue on your happy way!"

[/COLOR]Hi everyone, I am stuck in recovery in twrp at the moment, accidentally clicked to download the OTA. When i go into advanced, and terminal command, where would I go to enter the following command?

In terminal command, there is a choice for select. I clicked that, and then I typed in the following command in terminal command:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
once this was done, i backed out, and selected reboot, power off. phone powered up, and went right back into twrp recovery...What did I do wrong?

This is from tomajo2 in another thread. That OP was stuck in CWM, but in case the fix is similar, here you go:
I have a better idea to repair this problem.
1- You have to install LG Phone drivers and Android.sdk
2- Download TWRP for LG G2 and paste it to platform-tools folder in android.sdk direction on your PC
3- Go to recovery and plug the phone to PC
4- Next, in your phone recovery CWM you have to choose install zip and install.zip from sideload. Then wait for install the drivers of phone on your PC.
5- Open console in folder platform-tools (shift + PPM) and type adb sideload nameofTWRPfile.zip
6- Then reboot phone
7- Next enter to another time to recovery (now will be TWRP recovery)
8- Enter advanced and terminal console
9- Choose select and type the second option from this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2451696
10- Reboot phone
In my case is everything ok, but you have to remember that you can't install any OTA on custom ROM !
Sorry, but my english is not so good

Thank you,
I just received and installed an OTA update today. I was stuck in twrp and this saves my butt.
I used the terminal command in TWRP menu and type in the dd code and reboot the phone. Make sure you check twice that you have typed it in correctly or you could brick your phone.
Cheers.

When you are typing this in terminal command, where are you typing it at? I believe that I typed it in correctly, checked twice. Backed out, went to reboot, and power off. When comes back on, goes back into recovery.
I see at the top of terminal command, there is a line with / in it.
If you press select, it takes you to a line where you can enter in the full command, which I did before.

When I press select,in terminal command this is what is I type in, checked to make sure I am typing it in correct.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
Once I type this in, I hit go, in the lower right.
Takes me back out one screen
I then go to reboot
I've tried big power off and system
Once loads back up, it goes right back to twrp recovery.
Where am I going wrong? Where it says by name in the command, do I need to change that, or does it stay by-name? I've been typing it In as by name like the command shows.

I would love to help but what you did is exactly what I did. However regarding the go button I am not so sure. Why don't you try hitting enter instead.

Not that I have seen a video but it is pretty easy.
1. Go here and download the Loki Tool and extract it to your C:/ drive (create the folder named G2
2. Download the recovery for you device (looks like you are AT&T so go here) and move it to the same folder as Loki "C:/G2/Loki-master/Bin"
3. Download adb tool and extract it to the same folder as Loki "C:/G2/Loki-master/Bin"
3. Start command prompt by hitting start-> then "CMD" and hit enter
4. Type "Cd C:/G2/Loki-master/Bin" and hit enter
(note for the next few steps keep looking at your phone for confirmation from adb debugging)
5. type "adb push loki_flash /data/local/tmp/loki_flash" and enter
6. type "adb push openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.2-g2att.img /data/local/tmp/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.2-g2att.img" and enter

Does this work for VZW VS980?
afmracer6 has the best solution. Get the free app flashify from the market and download the .IMG of the recovery for your device and flash. Very easy.
I can confirm flashify works fine on verizon for flashing twrp
I'm on Scott's Rom now. Wow I'm going to donate to the guy that made flashify that's awesome. Wow makes it so easy.......

For anyone else stumbling across this, there is a companion video to the steps in post 2 (?) above. I can't post the link yet, but search youtube for "Installing TWRP on LG G2 Guide". Follows step by step, and works flawless for anyone going that route. Got me on CleanRom in no time
WARNING TO ALL: DO NOT USE FLASHIFY TO INSTALL TWRP.
----
There is a chance that Flashify will install the recovery.img to the boot partition, sending you into a Bootloop. The only way to get out is to revert to stock. There are multiple people coming onto Freenode a DAY with this issue.

IT IS NOT WORTH THE RISK.
Please use the other methods, option 2 if you're lazy, option 1 if you're worried about incompatibility, over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449670

[Q] Help :( escape twrp back to factory

Hi all,
I just recived my sprint lg g2, i was asked whether to update the system to the sprint network, being a mistake i clicked yes. Im in new zealand so i thought it wouldnt matter. Bad mistake and it took me to the twrp menu... I simply wanted to restore the phone back to factory settings or just return to how it was before. (I had no idea that twpr was installed on ge phone to begin with)
However i cant seem to figure it out. Ive backed it up not that that really matters, but when i go to reboot system it says
"your device does not appear to be rooted, install supersu now? This will root your device".
I swipe and it reboots simply back to twrp... How do i escape this?
Thank you so much
Someone please help me
I do not know what to do... When i go into the restore folder there are no files. Does this mesn i have turned the phone into a brick?
Before there were two files in the restore section niw they have disappeared! I have not connected this phone to a computer... I am really upset because all i simply did was allow sprint to update the phone and it is not connected to any network! Eifi only......
I just want to get out of the twrp and go back to how the phone was when i recieved it, is it possible? Please help me

ok thank you!
so it came up with this:
finished running boot script.
E:Storage partition '//TWRP/BACKUPS/04816da2910e8952' not found
then the above command dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota completed with 'no space left on device'
Somehow it seems the backup has been deleted.... I must have done this somehow trying to reboot.
What should I do next? thanks!!
This is what came back to be precise:
Finished running boot script.
E:Storage partition '//TWRP/BACKUPS/04816da2910e8952' not found
/ # dd if=/dev/zero of=dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota

SOLVED - Help me fix my LG G2 ATT D800 - Stuck in TWRP Boot Loop

Hey all. A couple of days ago it seem that there was an auto update that came in OTA. I had my phone plugged it to charge when the update showed up on the home screen. I did not do the update but left my phone on and plugged in to charge overnight. The next morning, I went to get my phone and the TWRP screen (TWRP that I previously installed) was on the home screen. Now I am stuck. I can not boot into the phone.
When I try to power my phone, I get the LG logo then the phone immediately boots into TWRP and here I remain. I can not get into the down load mode to restore to phone to factory defaults. I did have the phone rooted, unlocked, TWRP installed, Flashify installed, and Goo Manager installed, as well as being SU enabled.
I had a backup of Flashify, but it is gone. I have a TWRP backup, but when I try to restore it, I am still stuck in the TWRP screen after I reboot.
Here is what happens. I select the restore of the file that I have on the phone and on the TWRP log screen, it shows the following:
Finished running boot script.
[Restore Started]
Restore folder: '/data/media/0/TWRP/BACKUPS/016d06d0ce078bbe/1970-01-02--04-03-34 JDQ39B'

After that, I get the Reboot System. I reboot the system and the result is: I get the LG G2 symbol and I go right back into the TWRP screen with the options of "Install" "Wipe" "Backup" "Restore" "Mount" "Settings" "Advanced" and "Reboot".
I reboot into the following screen with "System" "Power Off" "Recovery" "Bootloader"
If I reboot into System - I wind up at the TWRP screen again after the LG logo.
If I reboot into Recovery - I wind up at the TWRP screen again after the LG logo.
If I reboot into Bootloader - I wind up at the TWRP screen again after the LG logo.
If I reboot into Power Off - when I power on I wind up at the TWRP screen again after the LG logo.
I tried a hard factory reset - back into the TWRP screen after the LG logo.
My computer does not recognize the LG G2 like it used to - I was able to see the SD card and get into it. Now, all I can find is the LG G2 under the Device Manager, Other Devices, G2 but the advanced properties show "Drivers not installed" and I can not install them.
How do I save my phone? I have some LG G2 backups on the computer, I have a Flashify Back Up on the computer, and I have a copy of the TWRP backup on the computer. But I can not get into "download mode" and doing a factory hard reset does nothing.

It is like there is a file structure on the phone but no data whatsoever in the files structures.

Its funny and probably not a coincidence that this just happened to me two days ago. Fortunately, you have all the right safeguards installed and this should be an easy process.
Now, in mine, I had the exact same issue. What you will need to do is use either the terminal emulator on the twrp recovery menu or hook up the phone to your computer and use adb. There are only three lines of code to enter, one deleting the update, one disabling it's start, and one to clear the misc partition. I am currently in my phone now so I don't have the code but I will get on my computer soon and update with the code and it's source. Just make sure it is exact. Hold on a minute.

Here you go. Really simple process, just copy and paste the code after entering ADB terminal within the folder you have it in.
If drivers are an issue, look up Koush's universal android drivers

I think that this will only work if you have TWRP already installed and have a TWRP backup file on the phone as the phone will revert to the last backup. Although this is an assumption on my part. It may revert to the phone factory default if you do not have a backup on the phone. As I indicated, I had been rooted, had Super User installed, had Flashify and TWRP installed on the phone and was locked in a TWRP bootloop that I could not get out of no matter what I did.
I am running Windows 7 Pro so these instructions may vary if you are running a different OS on your computer.
Get the Koush's universal drivers and install them on the computer. The regular LG drivers will not recognize the phone.
Get and download the "ADB + Fastboot + Drivers.zip" file found here and install in on the computer. Or found here.
Plug your phone into the computer and the computer should see your phone under the device manager properties as an "ADB Interface" "AndroidNet Sooner Single ADB Interface" (from the Koush universal drivers you installed. Originally, I think my phone was listed as a VZW device but it did not matter)
You have to run the ADB.EXE script from the computer in a CMD.EXE window that you are running with administrative privileges. Open a CMD.EXE window and navigate to the directory that has the ADB + Fastboot + Drivers folder. I had to navigate from /windows/system32 directory to C:/LG/ADB + Fastboot + Drivers/ directory (this is where I installed it on my computer) and type DIR and you will see the ADB.EXE command. Type "ADB SHELL (paste script here from other thread)", (without the quotes) then enter and it will run the script on the phone.
Restart the phone and it should work.
My phone reverted to an October backup, last one that I had on the phone.
If this does not work for you, I suggest that you start a new thread with your specific problem. You may have to flash the phone.
I do not know what the OTA update was but I read a thread that indicated that it was a rolling advert widget. I think that it was more than that though.
Let me know if you have success with this as it worked for me.
If you do not have access to a computer, I do not know what you have to do. You may be able to enter the script using the terminal emulator on the phone if you have access to it in TWRP.

As I indicated, I had been rooted, had Super User installed, had Flashify and TWRP installed on the phone and was locked in a TWRP bootloop that I could not get out of no matter what I did.
I am running Windows 7 Pro so these instructions may vary if you are running a different OS on your computer.

You can get the Koush drivers from here.
You can get the script from http://www.photo-cool.com/?p=48043
Can't help you with Windows8. I know nothing about it. The ADB + Fastboot + Drivers is a .zip file. You have to unzip the file and put it on a directory of your choosing. I put my in C:/LG/ADB + Fastboot + Drivers/
Once you unzip the file (you can use 7Zip found here ) you will see the ADB.exe application along with 5 other .dll/applications/files in the folder.

Here you go. Really simple process, just copy and paste the code after entering ADB terminal within the folder you have it in.
If drivers are an issue, look up Koush's universal android drivers

This link is dead. Can you please give me another link? It's very urgent.
Just use this Toolkit
http://www54.zippyshare.com/v/29970713/file.html
Download D800 Rom and then add the .zip folder to Toolkit v1,5 - sideload folder
First you need to enter TWRP and then go to Advanced and press ADB Sideload Swipe
It's easier to rename it like rom.zip
Now start the start.bin
Select language
Enter
In my opinion it's 1 , enter
Then press 7) Install ROM/ Unbrick via SideLoad
Enter
and write the rom name that is in the sideload folder ( becouse i renamed it it's rom.zip in my opinion)
Now wait for the rom is pushin trough sideload
The installation process will start automatic .
I hope you got this by now,., had this happen to me...I found the thing to do..
On your TWRP terminal command type this codes.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
then hit enter
type
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/misc
Then hit enter and back out of terminal to reboot system
Help me plz same thing im facing with my lg g2

Hello,
I've rooted my device and installed the hellfire Kitkat rom. Since I was not fully satisfied I wanted to go back to stock rom and then install the latest update from LG.
But now the device only boots into recovery (CWM V6.0.4.7)
I can install a backup ROM but when I reboot it enters recovery again.
I tried entering download mode by pressing "volume UP key" and then plugin usb but it enters recovery again.
Can someone help me please?!

I'm going to be cautious replying here because I'm a noob, but did you try using ADB to issue commands through adb sideload in cwm? If you go to "load zip" (or something along those lines) then "load using adb" (or something similar) in CWM, you can use adb to issue these commands with your computer and it should fix it (at least, it fixed a boot loop for me when I was stuck with TWRP). Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696
First of all. DON'T PANIC!
And even before that - make a nandroid backup! Go in CWM and make a full backup.
You have recovery working so you should be able to load System on it ok.
I am not an expert but let me try to guide you step by step.
1. Make a backup!
2. Download a rom on your computer. MAKE SURE ITS FOR YOUR MODEL # of LG G2
List of roms here:
3. Make sure you have over 70% battery
4. Go into recovery CWM
5. Use Wipe > Swipe to Factory Wipe
(go back on bottom right corner)
6. Go Advanced from HOME screen of CWM
7. Click ADB sideload
7b. (I assume you have the drivers loaded. If not make sure ADB is loaded in windows and device manager shows it. Download basic ADB package so you have "adb.exe" file in it)
8. put your rom in the same folder where you have "Adb.exe"
9. Open command prompt on windows. Goto the folder where ADB.exe is. Then Type "adb push (filename) /sdcard/(filename)". Example, "adb push rom.zip /sdcard/rom.zip"
10. Wait until it finishes its transfer(a message will appear saying the filename, file size and the speed of the transfer per sec when it finishes)
11. Wait for a while or reboot your cwm so that the filename will appear
12. just reflash the file in CWM (Install > choose file). Wipe after again.
13. Voila!
By any chance did you successfully go back to stock 4.2.2 and then took the OTA and then got the recovery loop? If so this will help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696

I did manage to restore the backup rom of 4.2.2 Then I downloaded the 4.4 OTA update and installed it. Then it hangs in recovery.
Do I need to have TWRP installed or does this work with CWM too?!

Basically what you need is a root shell whether it's via adb or built into recovery (cwm or twrp)
Searching the forum for "cwm bootloop ota" might give you detailed instructions for your case

When I try to run "adb shell" I get a message "error: closed" what does it mean?
When I run adb devices it returns a serial number. so it looks like it is able to communicate with my g2.

Weird, you can try and add the commands directly enclosed in parentheses like adb shell "dd if=...."

Help, possible brick!!!!!!!!

I am/was rooted with custom recovery. I was running stock ROM with minor tweaks (g3 notification panel, etc). I downloaded the "knock code" update that just came out for the LG G2 (AT&T), not even thinking about the root/custom recovery, and then when I went to install it, it booted into TWRP recovery. I had no idea what to do from there (it would just reboot back to recovery if I rebooted), so I wiped the system then flashed my backup. Still nothing, it still booted into recovery. So then, being the smart guy that I am, I did a complete wipe of everything (internal storage and everything), and now I'm stuck at recovery with absolutely nothing. No backups or anything.
How do I get my phone back up and running?

Try this..
What worked for me was from the TWRP terminal command was to type
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
then hit enter
type
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/misc
then hit enter and reboot.

What exactly is this supposed to do? I have absolutely nothing on my phone now- no backups or anything. I'm assuming I need to download a rom and flash it via recovery. Is it possible to get a rom on my phone if it just boots into recovery?

I thin you can ADB push a rom file to your phone, flash it in twrp, then enter those terminal commands which will allow it to boot normally

You took ota while having custom recovery ?
This will enable you to boot (if you didn't mess up another things on your system)
you may also: "adb push rom.zip /sdcard/rom.zip"
-where rom.zip is the name of your rom.
Can't figure out how to get ADB to recognize my phone. I downloaded SDK and all that. When I do "adb devices" I get "no devices found"
There's a bug in TWRP 2.7.0.0 that you can't activate ADB.
I suggest to boot into download mode (plug your phone to your computer USB while pressing volume UP key), open LG PC Suite, go to Mobile Device > Restore upgrade errors, and it will flash the latest stock firmware
