Phone nearly useless - Random Reboots, High Battery Drain, Radio Disconnects - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So since like two weeks there's been a thing which bothers me a lot with my beloved Nexus 4 (that I bought in early Sept.): My phone keeps rebooting, losing radio connectivity A LOT, sometimes I have to re-enter the "sim code" while I use it, also the battery drains way faster than before.
I am on stock ROM with an (outdated) TWRP recovery. I have already re-flashed the stock ROM multiple times. Even the radio with no success. Is it maybe the battery?
Does anyone have a solution for my issue? I am really disappointed, before these things occured I always thought highly of Google, Android and the Nexus phones..
Please help me !

If I were you I would get a replacement, RMA the phone by calling Google support and arrange a date. They'll send you a replacement which is likely to be a refurbished device. Just so you know, not every phone that is pumped out of the manufacturing plant is perfect. A small percentage will be flawed. Again. call Google tech support by dialing 1-855-836-3987. Good luck. :good::good:

Thanks for your help. One question: I rooted and installed custom ROMs on my phone before (never had an issue with these). It says everwhere that I lost the phone's warranty by that. Is calling Google for an replenishment still an option?

You need to get completely back to stock and re - lock your bootloader. Google shouldn't give you any problems if you do this. You can look for Wugs Nexus toolkit and it will make it happen for you. It is possible you have a buggy rom. But if you don't think that's it then back to stock, RMA. Good luck!

Okay, thanks.
Back to my original problem:
Could this also somehow be caused by my provider? Don't know like dropping signal or something :/

Maybe the loss in signal but not the random reboots.

Well there you go... Have you done the simplest thing. Which is to flash another rom or wipe the current rom and do a clean install? Sometimes you should do the simplest thing first.
Unless they've changed it, to RMA means you'll have to buy another one and then send yours back. Then they credit you for the second one you bought.

Already re-flashed stock rom. Is a clean install considered factory wiping and installing new recovery and rom?
I think I should try flashing a custom rom tomorrow.
Oh well. Sounds like I'm unlucky with the Red procedure. I'm a student and can't afford to buy a new phone.

If it were me and I was having doubts that it could perhaps be hardware issue I would completely wipe everything, get back to stock, unrooted and locked bootloader. Give it a few days and see what happens. Then call Google if necessary.. IMHO.

I have the same issue and I bought the phone on may 2013, makes no sense that a "new" battery drains this way. Started by turning off at 56%, then 60% then 80%, 95% and now, I have to keep it plugged to use it. Lucky me if I can cause it gets crazy by rebooting on the charging scree,n when the phone is off!!! which doesn't let the OS to start. Before it turns off, the radio does..as when you're between 1-2% and u configure it to turn off the radio to save battery.
When it turns off, it does it that way, just turns off..like a black out and resets basic configurations as language, wallpaper, sounds,...
I remember after updating to v 4.3, this issue came on. Before that, when 4.2,... my display/digitizer was replaced because it got broken (which hasn't happened with my ipod g4 that has had more falls than my nexus 4 =/ ) but just after updating to 4.3..problems came up.
This is the worst time ever with an android phone..I'm so disappointed:crying:, n more cause it's not so easy to ask for a replacement when u r not in a zone where the nexus is only sold.
Please help!!! really don't know what to do. Have wiped it many times!! is not rooted and I have v 4.4.2

For what I read so far, I think we're gonna have to replace the battery.
Since yesterday night, I try to turn it on but only gets to the Google screen and then goes back to charge..everytime I do this goes to 0%. Lucky if it starts the OS! but it turns off again..
This phone became so expensive now..

Did you try to completely wipe every partition? I just did that, installed new TWRP. img and OmniRom as a custom rom. So far it's working out great. Gotta see how it will go on from this. I'll report back.
Edit: never mind, still happening.

Just reading through the posts again, as I am still looking to fix this.
I also got my front screen replaced. This may or may not be coincidence.
This bug watch thread suggests flashing the 4.2.2 radio, so I am doing that right now.
If this doesn't work either, I am gonna call Google.

Did it work? I tried many things and definitely, the battery is dead. Maybe it's because of the screen replacement as I've read that to most people on this forum have had the same issue.
I ordered a new battery, let's see what happens and let you know if you haven't decide what to do by then.

all of my problems also.i sent to lg service center(since google dosent do rma here in brasil)and they told me it will take about 2 weeks to get back.since it will need to change battery + main board(witch for me will be mostly a new phone, i already had sent to change the screen and they changed all the up part. so to get a new phone just need the nfc coil to break xD)

Didn't hear from you in quite some time. Decided to order a new battery myself. Worked out great.
For people with similar issues:
I ordered a new battery and built it in myself. It worked out great and fixed all issues. With the new battery all the problems are gone and my phone feels like its factory new. For anyone who wonders what my old battery looked like:

I figured out what drains the battery

Its rayanza's lag fix i just formated my internet sd card flashed vibrant 6 rom and did not apply any lag fix and guess what the battery is not draining anymore. But the phone lags is there a alternative to rayanza's lag fix?
And for the people with battery problems try it.. You will see
I have the lag fix and not one thing has changed for me but benchmark scores. Although I didnt have battery issues before so I do not know if it helped anything or not lol

You're wrong.
I have gone through 2 vibrants and now on my third one. First one never would lock a carrier signal to use it, so back it went. The 2nd i rooted and applied lagfix and had all sorts of issues, and than finally it just bricked and would just go to the first image boot over and over and over and never came out of it. Couldnt even get to recovery mode to just put back to stock. Third one now is working great without lagfix but is still rooted. I dont see the need for it to use lagfix just for it to open apps faster. Doesnt really do anything but that to me. Sorry.. im very new to this type of smartphone as i came from using blackberry for over 5+ years. My wifes vibrant has no issue at all so far but only rooted to use the wifi hotspot. As for the battery part i didnt really notice a differnce in battery time on the lagfix and the non lagfix vibrants i have.
no i am not i am speaking from experience there is no need for me to lie.
is there any other lag fix? i just applied it again to see if it makes a difference and it drained 10 percent in 5 mins so.......
The only one that i used was RyanZAEXT2LagFix BETA 2-3 when i used lagfix on my 2nd vibrant. But it just led up to issues after issues until the phone pretty much bricked. But i dont ever recall seeing any difference in battery drain.
You killed 2 vibrants? You sir are a bad bad man and I hope you had to pay for the third one full price. You should know what your doing before you do something to your phone.

compared to RyanZA.. since I actually get more app space, Will I use it all? No. but its nice for whatever reason.
Quadrant Benchmarks:
Stock Kernel.
But when I did use RyanZA.. I didn't notice any battery life drains, so it's most likely something else.
I have the lag fix installed and haven't seen any difference in battery drain.

Im pretty certain i know i was doing.
The first phone was not even me at all. It was like that out of the box. Brought the phone home, put in my sim and nothing, no carrier network lock. Thought it might of been the sim card itself. Went to tmobile corp store and showed the phone and swapped out for new sim. It had the same issue.
Second phone carrier network locked fine. First thing i did was root it. Piece of cake. than did the lag fix.. no issues after install, than installed setcpu and juice up on it. after i set them up the phone would still get extremely hot and than basically reboot on its on even when i had setcpu clocked down to 800. 400 when screen is off. Even than when i did that the phone would go into a deep sleep and never come out unless i battery pull. uninstalled juice and setcpu seem to work where it wouldn't reboot, but still get extremely hot, not even being on it for 5-10 minutes. Than started to setup my emails and other apps and apps where forcing to close and freeze. phone calls would work but the screen would freeze where i could not get to the dial pad to enter numbers and look for contact info while on the phone, and than one day i was on the phone for like 2 minutes and the phone complete rebooted into the vibrant boot screen and loop at that only never getting past the vibrant boot screen image. It would just blank and go back to it, blank and go back. Took it back to tmobile and they never seen that happen.
Swapped out for third one now. Rooted but no lag fix and installed all same apps i use and emails etc.. and phone works flawless. So i don't think the lag fix is a necessity for me to use at this time. Only thing i saw with using it was that it open apps quicker. I dont see a huge point for me to use that if thats all it does. I dont see any other advantages of using lag fix at this time.
That's bad luck you made it sound like you briked your 2nd one installing the lag fix. I have not had any problems with my vibrant besides the gps. Well good luck man.

Ummm... That IS the RyanZA fix, just without the scripts to make installing it easier.
I've used all the lag fixes, and run without one. The battery doesn't really change with them. The biggest problem I've found is that something in the System process occasionally goes nuts and runs at 100% all the time. The phone gets hot and the battery drains very fast. You can see it if you get the System panel app and scroll to the bottom. Rebooting fixes it, so it's probably just a firmware bug.

Have y'all tried disabling the phone's animations to help with lag?
settings > sounds and display > animation > no animation
Just set mine to that setting. Appears to be running quite a bit better.
I had the lag fix on mine last week but it crashed and I had to wipe the phone clean. I'm not too eager about doing it again.

For some reason, my battery would drain like crazy (stock, non rooted,) after about two weeks of usage. One day, I had pulled out the batter and noticed the 4th quarter of the battery was swelling. I called TMO and they sent me a new battery free of charge. No more battery drains and this one lasted a full day of work while blasting Pandora in my ears to cut out all the idiots yelling at each other. So, before you start blaming apps and lag fixes for battery drain, physically check your battery. These Li-Ion batteries do it, not all of them, just some of them. It also happened on my G1, which TMO would not replace it and I just took the battery out of a friends G1 who was sending it back for warranty work.
Edit: I have now rooted my phone, and with the old swelling battery after 3 hours of up time, and simple usage (mms, two short 5-6 minute phone calls and Terminal Emulator) I'm already at 64% off a full "off-state" charge. Meaning I charge my batteries while the phone is off so it doesn't drain while charging, as they say you should do. With my new battery with an "off-state" charge, 3 hours of uptime and I am sitting at 96% battery life with minor usage.

Ive had a very similar issue happen to me, my battery was daining completely in under 2 hours. But I found restarting the phone corrected whatever process got hung up. I thought it was Ryan's fix.. and it's possible it might be linked to it, but I don't think it's necessarily the cause of it. Just a combination of things going wrong.

Please, do NOT use bulging batteries! They do that shortly before they fail internally and li-ions go up in a fireball when that happens.
You should dispose of that battery immediately. Don't have it in your home or near anything flammable. Treat it like it will spontaneously combust at any moment, as it has a good chance of doing exactly that.
my story is a bit different
I can personally say that RyanZA one click lag fix is what saved me from ultimately getting a different phone. I installed the lag fix one day and noticed I could go nearly 2 days on one charge with the same amount of usage. I did not install/uninstall anything other than apply the lag fix one weekend and bam, my battery is performing on par with what I'm used to on my old G1.

Red Light Of Death - Should I Be Concerned?

What causes this problem and is there anyway to fix this??

the red light is just caused by using your phone the wrong way. it won't happen if you do not flash a custom rom anyway.
And if you flash custom roms it won't happen either, if you follow the standard steps you have to follow on every android phone. It's just a brick that can happen on every android device if you flash broken .zip's or anything else comparable .
People who claim this happened from a moment to the next without them doing anything wrong, are just not telling the truth. Even IF this would happen this way(not your own fault), you could easily get a replacement from google without any costs or problems.
Thanks for the reply,
Ive heard many people who had a completely stock and unrooted nexus 4 say they got a red light of death too... The problem is, I don't live in any of the countries that have playstore devices. So I'm having somebody from the US bring it for me...

propably you could check the rev of those n4's (asking them in pm's). i can't imagine rev11+ have this problem anymore. I still won't believe this happened without a reason

These many people you speak of? That's not even half possible for it to RLOD on pure stock without any mods it's just to save the hardware its the phones built in safety net...unless you plan on OCing to 1.98ghz and set it to performance and run antutu that will most likely do it for you
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Hi,
It happened wih or without running an Antutu bench. Yes some users have reported the red light on stock with rev 10 or with rev 11.
Antutu is not directly the culprit, it's due to a bad read of battery stuff (in a stress condition even at 50% battery the phone think you are out of battery then shutdown + heat, there is an issue with some phone about the battery contact inside the phone). If it's happen you can try to let your phone in charging for hours, sometimes it's enough. But the better thing is to open your phone then disconnect / reconnect the battery.
It happened also while flashing something in recovery mod, 40% battery, flash then reboot and bam red light...
Also on a French forum it happened during a download while browsing...
I agree we not know all the conditions together when it happened but it seems this is slightly random. Maybe a combination of circumstances...
It's "just" related to some weird battery reading issue.
For example I ran a bunch of Antutu bench with / without overclocking at different battery % (even at 11% battery ) without any issues, at least until today...
Take a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36304348
So does this problem happen to everybody or is only a minority of nexus 4 users affected? Do you think google would've fixed this problem by now??
Re,
It seems it's a minority phones who are concerned...
I don't know if Lg / Google have worked on the problem. As I read maybe the rev 11 are less concerned? But I'm not sure...
Don't be afraid, use your phone and if that happens rma or open your phone, there is always a solution
Alright, read a lot of threads and it looks like removing the battery and starting it again works perfectly. I also read somewhere that its due to too much pressure being applied on the thing the connects the battery to the phone.. - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128392&highlight=red+light+of+death&page=2
Yes, it's what I said, ah I forgot this link.
When you search, you find
Happened to me a few days after I got it (100%stock, not rooted); I left it charging for some time and it turned on again like nothing happened. Didn't happened since.
Only time I had it was when I first rooted.
It got stuck in a boot loop on the "X" screen and when I rebooted to clear the cache the red light flashed and I had to hold the power button in to turn it off.
Booted into recover fine after that.
No issues since.
Alright that's good to hear. When did you guys get your nexus?? Maybe google resolved this issue.
I got mine very recently ordered in late February. It did red light because I flashed a mod which was for the nexus 7 but i flashed it on my nexus 4. I just went into recovery and flashed stock, phone was fine.

Alright. Sounds good.
Got mine last week but it's a Rev 10 not an 11.
indoh said:
the red light is just caused by using your phone the wrong way. it won't happen if you do not flash a custom rom anyway.

That is not true.. Red light appears due to some small chip next to the battery which is hardly put in there, you just need to release some pressure and it will be fine.. (there's a youtube video)
Loosen the screws?? Do you have a link to the YT video?
Ordered mine when they were first available, got it 2-3 weeks later (end of November).
Got a bricked rev11 301k here. Tried everything untill I get my replacement (takes a bit longer since I live in holland). Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2177787&highlight=nexus+4+bricked for more info. Now I try to drain the battery and let it charge (put it in a cold enviroment for a full 24 hrs. Got past the google logo for half a second and saw the stock recovery before it went dead again

[S4 Active]- So my phone started freezing up on me yesterday...

My experience with my S4A has been amazingly flawless up until yesterday, when it started experiencing one of the issues that killed my experience with the HTC One- random freezes. And what's strange about it is that they are the same type of freezes that my One experienced, only when browsing the web or using an internet based app like Pulse. It has happened 3 times since yesterday and is so bad that I've had to pull the battery to even get it to reboot. Which brings me to one of my suspicions...
The only thing that has changed between me getting the phone set up originally and when the freezes began was the fact that I started swapping batteries instead of charging the phone. Now, phone batteries nowadays are not just like your average AA cell, it has circuitry in it and NFC stuff... is it possible that a defective battery could be the culprit of my woes? I just put in my original battery and am gonna just wait and see if it happens. The other battery that I've been using is a Samsung OEM battery and not a cheap one. I did root and freeze a bunch of stuff, but nothing exotic, and it was fine until yesterday. I doubt anything I did caused this.
Has anyone else experienced any freezes like this? Help me solve this, I really want to keep this phone (at least until the next latest and greatest comes out). TIA

Mine started Sunday. All it would do is hang at the ATT logo on reboot. I ended up doing a factory reset and it hasn't happened since. Certainly made me suspect the rooting I did...

What did you do to your phone after rooting?
A couple of times now my active has become unresponsive. The power button doesn't seem to work and the home key doesn't do anything. The led is flashing blue and the battery is still about 35%. The only thing I can do is pull the battery.
Not sure if this is related to your question but I'm going to try to get it replaced...

Didn't really do anything drastic- Titanium Backup and froze some att crap. Nothing even remotely close to system apps.

My LED never starts flashing but like yours, none of the buttons respond and I have to do a battery pull. I really don't want to have to get it replaced, and I really don't want to wipe and start over, just don't have the time right now to do either. Did you do anything to yours? Root?

Same here. Nothing I froze should have any affect on system stability.
I Haven't had any issues since I've had the phone, going on 3 weeks. I've been rooted and have froze apps in TB with no problems since geohot gave us root. Also have done some other root mods, and have not experienced any issues.
Sounds like just some bad hardware circulating.

I've modded mine a good amount and haven't had any lock ups. I have just about every root app out there. Xposed with nottach, dark phone and contact apk, and cm10.1 messaging app. Froze a lot of bloat too

Man I REALLY hope it's not a hardware issue. I'm so tired of doing the repeated exchange thing. I went through 5 One X's before I found a suitable one, saw that pattern emerging with the One (had 2, both with same issues) and was really hoping the S4A was going to be the answer to my woes. I really love this phone but if it ends up being a hardware thing, I will be incredibly disheartened.

Any way to tell the build dates of our phones? Maybe we could narrow it down to a certain production date.

I dunno... My box is in another state so I won't be able to check it for a few weeks. I bought it on the very first day it was available if that helps any. On a side note, I put my original battery in last night and it hasn't locked up on me since. We'll see what happens by the end of the day.

I am rooted but that's pretty much it.
The only thing I know I was doing at the time was watching a YouTube video then pressed pause.
Next thing you know I picked it up hit the power... Nothing. Hit menu... Nothing. The blue LED was just the normal notification indicator, so I knew it hadn't powered off... Resulted in a battery pull.
I also know that I didn't get any messages or new notifications while the screen was off.

I ALWAYS have issues restoring from titanium backup, esp going from one phone to another. My suggestion is to factory reset and start with a clean slate, cas only then can u verify a hardware issue.

I know on the Captivate the Build Number could be found under the battery (can be found there on the S4A as well) and it was the year/month that the phone was built, or so they say. My S4A Build number is 1306 so I'm guessing it was built the beginning of June...

I would like to know if you have had any more problems since you put your original battery back in? If you could give a update I would really appreciate it. I really think the active is a great phone and I truly like it but if people are having a lot of issues with it, I'll just return it and get something else to save myself a headache down the road. I have a week left on my return date so that's why I was wanting to know.

gf has had similar issues; heres what fixed it.
battery pull
factory reset/restore
reboot
battery pull
reboot
root/etc/restore from there. check to make sure you dont have custom CPU voltage/speed mods enabled; i believe this was the initial culprit, though even after resetting them to stock it would still lock up. it only did it 3 times, and usually right after a new mod, but ONLY if CPU values were changed. after the above procedure, she redid all her cpu values but only AFTER all mods were installed, rebooted, and everything works great again.

Same problems no matter which battery. It seems to happen most when I'm using Chrome so I deleted the updates but it's still doing it. It happened while playing a game today which it's never done before. Next step is to freeze Chrome and see if that helps. If not, then I'm gonna factory reset and if that doesn't work, I'm gonna have to exchange it. I really did not want to have to deal with this. With my ridiculous work schedule I don't have the time or the energy. I might just start looking for a different phone because I'm sick of having issues like this.

I would say if the factory reset does not work than it is the phone itself. I had issues like this in the past with my old infuse and I did a factory reset and it took care of it. Hopefully that will help you out so you can keep your phone. Thanks for replying.

Yeah bud, I really hope a reset works. I might do it tomorrow, I should have enough time. I'm just frustrated that I'm having identical issues with the S4A that I had on my One. I was really hoping to find a phone that just works. I don't think I've had a problem free phone since my Epic 4G Touch. My One X had issues (though my 5th one was near perfect), my iPhone 5 was horrible, both my Ones had problems, and now this. I'm just venting now but I'm seriously tired of it. I've got my eye on that new Sony i1 that's coming out in a couple months, I really love their current design choices and I've never tried a Sony before. Or maybe the next Nexus. Who knows. I just don't want to deal with this crap anymore.

4.2.2 update turned the sceen a vampire ready to suck my battery life

Well the topic tells pretty everything i used to have no real issues with the battery life of my phone, till i got the kitkat update. Since then as soon sa i turn the screen on i can really see the battery % drop. I mean 1% for minute of usage. And the back turns Hot.
I'm pretty confused since i have not read such kind of problem around here. I already greenified what i can (no root). And hard and chache reset too..
Any other idea about the nature of the issue (9005 model) Tank you!!

This is my first samsung device, and actually i was really happy about my battery life and when i got the notification of the 4.4.2 update i was even more happy cause i was sure that it would have improved it even more. LOL.
What amazes me is that even if there's clearly something wrong, and even if the note is a company flagship, there is no plan for a patch -.-

A fresh stock flash won't trip Knox no. So long as you are flashing
A)The same firmware
B)Not trying to downgrade
---
Grab the stock ROM you require from one of the threads in the General section of the Note sub forum.
Grab Odin 1.85.
Once you download the .zip file, unzip and you should get an .md5 file around 2GB in size.
Put your phone into download mode, plug into PC, fire up Odin and load the .md5 file into PDA/AP slot. Hit start. Grab a beer and chill until it has finished.
Have a read through the threads with the different ROMs though, sometimes there can be minor issues with file sizes etc which then require a PIT file, but you should be OK tbh

I'd really like to root my phone and finally have some serious fun with it, but i'm not really a guy who like to take a risk like this.. It's not a budget phone and i do not want to pay for some factory issue, even if this is a real bad move by samsung and i won't ever buy a samsung device again for this reason, but in the meanwhile i have to try to take the best from my unrooted phone.
I've already read the camera issue, my note do not fall into it.. As i said the Phone act very good and is really energy savvy, until i wake up the screen, this literally drinks the battery juice.. 1% per minute! Less or more.. And no matter if i lower the screen brightness.
As soon as i'll have some spare time i'll try that fresh flash procedure

n00b's bro. Mistake, just like allowing them on this forum.
Same as everyone having issues with battery life on the Note 3 /w 4.4.2. All n00bs.
The very fact that n00bs think that Sammy would release a ROM with obvious issues? No. Not going to happen.
The issue lies with the end user. Period.

Yep, join the KitKat bug club. Note 3 users are having horrendous battery drain issues with 4.4 along with wifi instability and cellular network drops. I went through 3 Note 3's until I finally gave up and decided to stick with 4.3, the hassle was not worth it at all.
My battery usage went to crap with Kitkat.

I got this issue and solved it in this way;
let ur phone to discharge ~15% or less
then turn off ur phone and connect it to charger
and let it to charge 100% then turn ur phone on.
It s like re-gauge battery.
there s some apps for it on some laptops but nothing yet for smartPhones

Then why is mine perfectly fine?
Exact same as Jelly Bean. The radio acts a bit different, battery life is identical.
I still think these are the dreaded PEBKAC error. Or in this case a "PEBPAC" error.
Flashed mine with Odin 3.09... hmm.

Unusable Note 4 Overheating, I think

I have a Note 4 that is stock that started randomly restarting. Then it couldn't even boot all the way up. I noticed it was getting very hot near the sim card. After letting it sit for a day, and cool off, I think. I was able to get into stock recovery and do a factory reset before it froze again. However, it still can't even boot all the way to the welcome screen. I assume it is a hardware issue. Any advice on what to repair/replace to fix this? Is it the motherboard? Thanks.
Hi, you could try to flash the stock ROM of the Android version that you're using. If that doesn't help, it's most likely an hardware issue and you have to send it to Samsung or get it repaired otherwise if possible.
Thanks. I am pretty sure it is the motherboard that has gone bad. It won't stay powered on long enough to flash a rom.

Can you access the download mode of your device long enough? If yes, you could use the software Odin to flash the ROM.
If no, I guess nothing than Samsung itself can help you.
when my note 4 died suddenly during the day- having had issues like freezing, laggin and restarting since MM6.0.1- I thought it was ready for the burial but I read online somewhere- too many google pages LOL- to take the battery out, put it to chill in the fridge for 10 mins (I left mine in for 30), take it out and put the battery back in . Totally resuscitated!
Now using Wakelock app and all is- fingers crossed- well i.e.: no more lagging, freezing etc.
(I somehow could not flash custom firmware using my Mac after 3 tries- )

Thanks for the quick reply, guess i should probably follow up too, i'll try to remove the shorting using Elma's solution and if it doesn't work i'll just throw it out, a new motherboard costs as much as a whole new phone, and yeah your Note 4 was shorted as well, most likely due to a poor quality battery or a bad Charger/USB cable or excessively using it while charging.
