Is it built into the operating system or are you using an app?

I'm curious about this too

I don't know what you mean if it's built into the OS. The IR blaster works out of the box for me. All I needed was the app to control it. I just installed the apps in the link that you posted and that's it. I didn't do the rest because the it worked for me by just installing both the apps.

Android 4.4 was supposed to have support for IR blasters built in, and that led me to assume it would also have software to control the IR blaster, so I wasn't sure if you were using the linked method or if you'd discovered that capability within Android.

Oh no there is nothing in the settings or anywhere that controls the IR blaster - hidden somewhere I don't think so because someone would of mentioned something about it. The only way I got it to work was with the APKs that were posted on the link you posted

One of the selling points of kitkat was built in it blaster support. I wonder what they meant. Perhaps it's in the developers options.

There is support for it in kitkat in the framework , but it still requires you to have an app that accesses/utilizes that support.
http://developer.android.com/about/versions/kitkat.html#44-ir-blasters
IR Blasters
Android 4.4 introduces platform support for built-in IR blasters, along with a new API and system service that let you create apps to take advantage them.
Using the new API, you can build apps that let users remotely control nearby TVs, tuners, switches, and other electronic devices. The API lets your app check whether the phone or tablet has an infrared emitter, query it's carrier frequencies, and then send infrared signals.
Because the API is standard across Android devices running Android 4.4 or higher, your app can support the broadest possible range of vendors without writing custom integration code.

Funny cause we have all that on 4.2.2

So what happened to software for this? I don't see WatchOn installed, and its not compatible with the phone. Am I missing something or did that just not quite make it to production?
I had watchon installed and it worked great. Seems sammy bought peel or licensed their tech.

You had it installed on your AT&T us S4? The playstore says it not compatible.
Should come pre installed.

worked great on mine as well
should be pre installed a purple icon and then you need to configure it, have it working on 2 separate tvs and cable boxes
WOW....... I knew it was late, and I know I'm getting old... Time for new glasses. I looked in apps 20x for that stupid thing and went right over it, even knowing what it was called!
....
I should loose a point for this....
Is anyone using an app other than Samsung WatchON that is compatible with our phones? My initial feeling is that this app is a piece of crap.

Directv HR24
Anyone else having issues with WatchOn controlling a Directv dvr? It works with a Hitachi tv and Pioneer receiver, but I can't seem to get the directv box working.
Check to make sure your DirecTV box isn't set up to use RF instead of IR.

So you had it installed the whole time, you went to the play store (supposedly) and it supposedly said not compatible. It should of said "open" or uninstall If you really checked..

No, the version on the play store was NOT for the s4. It wasn't compatible ( not sure about now, however, i said that a while back and things could have changed by now. ). The version that was already on the phone worked fine as i said already as well. ( where i admitted to being blind and not seeing it already loaded on the phone )

Its like $20 or $30 but Samsung Remote by Touchsquid is nice

They said an update was do out may 15 for portrait orientation but I haven't seen it yet.

I later realized that the app just doesn't have the alternate Directv remote code sets that you use if you have more than one box in the same location. Hopefully, they can add those.

[Q] IR Blaster on AOSP ROM

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting the IR blaster to work on a AOSP ROM'S. Has anyone tested Peel Smart Remote on one, or possibly managed to get a WatchOn apk and get that working on AOSP? Having the IR blaster is the only thing keeping me on TouchWiz at the moment since my TV remote's power button is fried, but I would really like to get TouchWiz off.
Download smart remote from the play store. It works very well.

The $10 one that specifies gs4? And that is confirmed to work on AOSP ROMS?
I don't think it will work. Asop roms delete pretty much ALL added features to the phone. Someone would have to get the apps from TW and see if they work on it. I'm not sure which system app you would need. If I knew which system apps I needed I would test it for you. I have the smart remote for g s4 app

Im gonna try some roms out today. I'll let u know what I find with the ir stuff. I had the s3 and the ir is the main reason I upgraded. That and the battery.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
@kyhassen: Yeah, that's just about what I thought. I'm sure if someone dug through TW enough that whatever code is needed for it to work would be found. Could even be something as simple as a call method to find the hardware that gets passed along to whatever app the user is using, which could then be ported into an AOSP to keep that working..
@Mahapederdon: Thanks, please do keep me in the loop if you find something

Yeah keep us up to date on what you find!
The IR code is proprietary. Meaning it is unlikely the needed code will be released any time soon. Its possible someone may reverse engineer the drivers one day, or the code will "open" so all hope is not lost.
Try to back up the apk from stock through Titanium backup and restore it on your favorite aosp rom and see if it works.

Has anyone tried that?
I just did on slim bean it installs and opens but it won't work as a remote I think aosp doesn't have the s4's or drivers.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda premium
Ok, so then it looks like someone needs to either reverse engineer the drivers, or talk Samsung into releasing them.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
And I just asked Samsung about that, and they basically said no. Anyone know anyone who may be able to reverse engineer it?
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
So I'm guessing that smart remote won't work.
GS4 on Slim bean and CarbonROM
Hardware support is missing at the kernel level, .apks won't fix it.
It seems to be fully functional on the Google Experience S4 and also CyanogenMod nightlies according to users and reviewers.

Yea, I can confirm it works on the Google Experience S4 rom running on my SPH-L720, tried it out just recently using the WatchON app.
Same here then I tried it on CM 10.1 latest nightly and it didn't work on that but it worked on the Google edition rom.

Tv app

Being that I came from both the S4 and One, I've found myself completely clueless with this phone as to what's on tv and which channels. Both of those phones had apps that controlled the IR blaster and included a tv guide-like app. Do we not have anything like that? I've been looking and just find the remote app.

Damn. I was afraid of that. It amazes me that they did not include something similar to compete with them. I'd like to get more attention drawn so we can find an app, have one made, or make our voices heard by LG.

Sadly it doesn't... But at least it has the guide and I can touch the show I want to watch and it takes me right to it.
they put no effort into the blaster. it's angle is absolutely awful and the htc one and gs4 kill it. if you're one inch off from the direction of the IR in the device, it won't work. it's absolutely terrible... so it doesn't surprise me the software sucks.

You really do have to aim it with precision for it to work well. Stupid thing.

I definitely noticed the same thing. I can't seem to figure out what or why it is that way. The One had the best IR blaster in my opinion. I enjoyed it's bundled app more than the S4's too.

[Q] TV Remote

Hey G2 users , I think of buying this phone in this month. So I want to ask is there a TV Remote app like in HTC One or Galaxy S4?
Yes
Sent from my LG-D802 using xda app-developers app
It is fantastic. You can make custom remotes, program custom profiles, everything. It is fantastic.
Sent from my LG-D800 using xda app-developers app
Except it has not very good range. IR sensor is quite small.

Trying to use it is also kind of a pain, I find myself having to really aim at the sensor location on the TV to get it to work.
I guess it's ok though since I don't plan on using this since I have my TV remote. To me, it's just a nice-to-have thing in case my TV remote ever craps out or gets lost.

G2 ir blaster

hello
I wonder if G2 ir blaster can learn remote control code (receiver) like HTC One or just use Predefined cods like Galaxy s4?
thanks in advance

Actually, it can do both.
Yes, it can learn. I was very happy with the feature, but most of the buttons are not working, atleast for me.
I have learned my phone, my ACs and none of them work. Any solution?

Try reprogramming the buttons. I had that happen to me once, after recreating the remote everything worked fine ever since.
My only grouse is that every time I switch roms, all my remotes go and I have to reprogram the various remotes. It's far easier to just pick up the remote and your good to go. The only place it's useful is in a bar when you want to impress someone

I never had to do that. I restored app data upon flashing the new ROM and it worked.
