I haven't been able to find anything on removing bloatware. Is there a zip somewhere that will do it or a list of unnecessary files that are safe do delete? Thanks in advance

I do use Titanium Backup. I was just wondering if there was a .zip that will get rid of them all at once or at least a list of the files it's alright to delete. With TB I only get rid of the files I know for sure won't cause any problems by their removal. Just looking for a more comprehensive list of apps that are not needed. I miss Calkulin's bloat remover.
As they said.. Titanium Backup is a good choice... Convert to User App if you need to also.

Does removing bloatware actually free up any ram. As far as I understand the system still reserves 6gb for its own use so removing bloat at least in terms of ram does nothing?

From my understanding it does drop it as debloated custom Roms seem to use less ram when I ran then. Compared to stock ROM.

Agreed debloated roms probably do, but deleting apps from a stock Rom does not as it still reserves the same amount of ram regardless if the apps are there or not. As I understand the op was asking about debloating stock Rom

Removing Bloat removes applications from start-up ram, check for yourself. Your Stock ROM will run faster and smother. My RAM sits at 798 MB versus no Bloat removed with my applications added, it uses 1.6 GB and runs slow.

Yup, and I'm not sure if it's the placebo effect or not but it's always seemed like I get increased stability when I get rid of the useless junk.

The same here and that was my point, runs smoother and feel like the S4 should, without all the extra junk. No hangs, no force closes or anything... Just smooth and quick!

Very good script! But, I prefer to use stock recovery and root.

OK, so the debate over partitioning in CM10 is all but done and I'm not going to discuss it here.
I've been building CM10 for my own use with the partition layout change reverted and this works nicely for me. But what about people who can't compile the source for themselves (for whatever reason)?
That's why I'm posting this brief guide to what I'm calling "fudgedating" (its like updating). Using the method below you will be able to stay up to date with all the CM10 nightly updates (except kernel changes) without compiling or doing anything difficult.
ALWAYS MAKE A NANDROID BEFORE FLASHING
I'VE TESTED THIS WITH CM10 NIGHTLIES FROM 23082012 & 22082012 BUT IF IT FAILS TO WORK FOR YOU THEN I'M SORRY, THAT'S LIFE. RESTORE YOUR BACKUP & MOVE ON
What you'll need:
1. My cm-10-20120918-FISHEARS-galaxysmtd.zip file (my nightly that has a working kernel with the old partition layout)
2. Any current Nightly zip of CM10
3. A computer with a Zip-capable archive tool
What you need to do:
1. Make a copy of cm-10-20120918-FISHEARS-galaxysmtd.zip and call it something like CM10-FUDGEDATE.zip
2. delete the /system folder from within CM10-FUDGEDATE.zip (or whatever you called it)
3. extract the /system folder from your official CM10 Nightly
4. add that /system folder to your CM10-FUDGEDATE.zip (or whatever you called it)
Now you have a CM10-FUDGEDATE.zip (or whatever you called it) containing the kernel and partition layout from cm-10-20120918-FISHEARS-galaxysmtd.zip and the system from the CM10 Nightly.
Copy CM10-FUDGEDATE.zip (or whatever you called it) to your SD card and flash it in CWM.
Reboot & profit
NOTE: currently you can NOT flash any custom kernels because there aren't any that support the latest CM10 while still having the old partition layout.
Whenever you want to repeat the process for a new Nighly, just do steps 2,3 & 4 again and flash it as before.
Please don't flame this thread. If you think its a bad idea then please state only technical objections to support your view.
All credit to Team Hacksung & Pawitp for the awesome effort that continues to go into CM10.
Well... old partition nightlies worked very good for me.So I will try this.
Anyway I noticed there are some jb ROMs with less changes than yours calling theirselfs stable so far etc.
Will you make thread of cm10 (or call it like you want) with old partition and newest nightly?
Thanks. Sorry for poor English.

Thanks but I don't want to start the hard work of maintaining a ROM thread. This is just instructions to stay up to date.
I do compile my own CM10 which you can download by clicking on my signature. Again, I won't be starting a thread for this as its really just for me but I don't mind sharing.
I will change the thread title though.

That's good to know. I think we both must have phones with the faster NAND because I didn't see any improvement when the official partition layout changed.

No need to wipe.
If you are flashing a new build over a previous one then you also don't need to reflash gapps

Managed to install your rom, and I got what I want. However I have a probler with Adaway said: /data/data/host not enough spare. Try Adfree solve the problem. Anyway thank you for the idea and rom.
Edit: Just discovered that System had only 300k free space out of 350MB. Maybe I have to delete some not important apk (like those live wallpapers) & unused ringtones.
Edit2: After deleting Chinese & Korean fonts Droidsansfallback , MTL* & Nanum Gothic, I got 12MB free space and Adaway runs smoothly.

That's fine. I think pawitp might get a bit lazy with the system size now that his build has a 2gb /system
Maybe I'll have to trim it down in the future.

A rom more in line with the Slim Bean philosophy (about 280mb system with google apps) would even allow you to create a larger datadata partition (at the expense of unused system partition space, circa 80mb) and improve usability. Using this mind-frame i guess we could gain some 50mb to datadata while still keeping 30mb free in system for people who want to add some removed system apps.
Nevertheless, this is your rom and ultimately your decision.

Its a good idea & perfectly possible. Pawitp just asked for some chip id data in the CM10 thread. It looks like lags could be associated with phones having the older Samsung MoviNand chip. Newer devices have a Sandisk iNand (same as Nexus S). I have the Sandisk so that's why the new partition layout made no difference to me. I'm not sure that increasing datadata would help. I don't use it because I don't see any gain in practice.

Easy just copy and paste into the run script of a CWM zip or in AROMA... I assume this will be done?

This basically removes any rom related files in /data partition

If you're deleting /data/data, you're losing app data so would still need to add titanium restore to this process surely? So its only saving you restoring the apks?

If you use Philz recovery there is a complete Rom cleaning script included.

I use it and for me is the best Recovery I have found.
But I think the CWM cleaning scripts do a full wipe / Dalvik ...
And the one here is a diferent aproach.
I do not think this can really work because most of the time, the data that is saved is for system specific data like settings and such. When you flash a new rom which has a different set of settings and system built in apps, the data that is from the old conflicts with the new.
I only dirty flash when I am moving between same based roms but going from CM to Stock it makes sense to do a full wipe.

If you look at the script, it deletes /data/data where that "system data" is stored. It deletes pretty much everything except /data/app, which is why it seems pointless to me

i want to download a rom but there is 2 choices Deodexed or Odexed what dose this mean. and which one should i chose.
Deodexed is customizable with mods and themes. Odexed is slightly faster but cannot flash any mods with it. So I would advise you to go with deodexed.

You can flash mods to odexed roms, you just have to make sure the mod is for an odexed rom.
Odexed ROMs in theory are faster, doesnt need to cache itself on initial boot of ROM and De-Odexed in theory are easier to modify; theme and altar. De-Odexed ROMs also have to build a cache on initial boot that only takes a minute depending on how many apps you have. Dont let boot time decide for you. Decide whether you are ever planning on installing themes or mods(Most Are For De-Odexed ROMs.
Reason being Odex in theory is faster is due to the APK being more optimzed in terms of file placement inside of the APK and Odex file for the OS so when the OS attemps to use the APK or Odex file it is read faster than without being optimized. Also, these apps do not need to be cached upon initial boot. The reason De-Odexed ROMs are generally easier to modify, theme or altar is due to there generally being less work involved. All that needs to be done is the altaring of one APK versus an Odexed ROM usually is first De-Odexed, modified then re-Odexed. De-Odexed ROMs are also cached with system apps on initial boot ONLY. Now, also take a good look at the words of IN THEORY for Odex being faster because it technically should be faster due to them being optimized but we have such a powerhouse processor and 2GB of RAM for example so we see literally no difference, I dont care what anyone says lol. Odex will help behind the scenes but ZERO noticeability.

Well, what are you looking to install? Stock ROM or what? I am on stock ROM but at the same time I am unroored also haha. Even when I do root, I stick to stock ROM and altar it myself but dont install mods are anything like that so I stick with Odexed. Answrr that question for me if you can and then we will go from there.

Okay, well if you are just looking to root, delist and run a custom kernel then why not go ahead and use Odexed? It won't be any noticeably faster but behind the scenes it is. I don't install mods, I just go ahead and root, run odexed, debloat and a custom kernel. All is well after that. No need to zipalign because system apps are already zip aligned from what my research shows IIRC so good to go there.

this rom is stock deodexed from beanstown i took it and trimmed it Way down (559 mb) and added some tweaks and apps..Im running it now and its pretty smooth.i put this in general to see how people respond before i clutter up the dev section..this is fully functional, but while its in general i will consider it a (WIP)..i will straighten up the op and put in the dev section if this gets any popularity.i plan on adding mods along the way but the idea behind this is to build it up the way the end user wants it as is usually the general idea..
*let the tablet set for a few minutes before setting up,and after its set up boot into recovery clear cache, clear dalvik and fix permissions.

Good Question
Would also be interested if this is possible
WebOS is a different animal compared to Android. And Im sure this wont be possible with a locked bootloader. Messing with the partitions is dumb imo, thats the easiest way to hard brick a device.
Guys I came from an LG nitro and we had several issues with modified system partitions really screwing things up. Messing with your system partition is the fastest way to end up with a shiny paperweight. Don't do it.

Why would they? Its partitioned that way to hold the size of their default software...

Would definitely love for more free space especially since i'm running cm11 and the rom is practically a little over 200MB.
Probably some of the devs can have a look at this
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The system partition is 3.2 GB. It isn't like you can go from 24 to 31 GB free. If your that desperate over an extra gig, you might need to reevaluate what you have on your phone, or invest in a microsd usb card reader.
Also, 200 MB is most likely the size of the zip file, you are using to install the rom. That is compressed size. Mahdi rom (I have on my pc at moment so could check), is 208 MB compressed.. The actual install size is 351 MB. That doesn't include gapps, which also installs to the system partion. The core gapps package is 18MB but installs to be 30 MB. And that is assuming you are using core, the full packages are MUCH larger.
So theoretically, you could free up maybe 2.7GB. Is it really worth a good chance at bricking your phone for that?
This might sound dumb, but I'll say it anyway...
There is media in /system/media, not sure about songs, but certainly ringtones etc
I wonder if one could dump a few gigs of mp3's into /system to make better use of the space, and less use of the media drive (/sdcard).

we need to unlock bootloader to be able to resize partitions
It would be nice to be able to shrink the system partition. I've attached a sample screen of my G2 that is running CM11 nightlies.
But yeah, dropping the system to 1GB would leave plenty of room and boost the 24.1GB up by about 2.2GB to 26.3GB (a 9% increase which is fairly significant).
As others have mentioned though there is the issue of the bootloader.
On a second thought...I recall the unroot/unbricking flash tool causing some issues for people related to phone storage sizes.
I wonder if someone creative might be able to create an image with custom partition sizes via this method.
If u cant resize the partitions, IT would be kind a awesome to create a custom recovery like safestrap or boot Menu Manager which can create multiple System Slots so that u have multiple Systems on ur g2. So Let's say a aosp rom and a modded Stock rom at da same time.
Like so that devs See that.

You can't. Enjoy your phone as it is

I would also apreciate that. Having a 16Gb phone with just 10Gb free is a waste of space.
Stock Roms may be 3.2Gb compressed and inflate to 6GB uncompressed, but I am running on CM11, which only should be 500MB at most, when uncompressed.
Also this phone not having a micro SD card really kind of messes it up.
i have 2 galaxy s variant (epic4g sprint usa & sc-02b docomo japan) both have long journey in development history from cm7 to latest cm-11
the partition size was change several times to accommodate bigger system files in newer version
afaik it can be set in kernel source for both device on mtd samsung onenand driver
I don't know about g2 because I just own this device for 2 days lol
I have 16gb, so find a dev who works on this will be a great news for me
Anybody found anything useful regarding shrinking the partition?
