Got mine... Finally!!!!!

I'm really really excited...! This is my dream tablet, I've been waiting for this for over a month. And now its finally mine! But there is a problem, since I've no WiFi network in my house(for now), how can I install applications. I know the android applications are .apk format, but I don't know from where to download them. I got the file manager HD .apk file but I don't know how to install it. Please help!

Youll have to root your tablet then you can install apks locally. Alternatively you can try easy installer. You will need a internet connection as its required by the Market to install apps.

I don't think you have to root to install apps locally... as long as you have the unknown sources option checked, you can install apps from wherever you want. If you have a desktop with internet that you can get to, you can download the apk's from various torrent sites, and I think there is a web version of the android market? I'm sure there are other places as well, just search on Google. anywhooo, then just transfer the file over to your A500 via the USB cable or flash drive, and open the file through the app manager option that pops up when you tap on it, then click install.

I have had no problem download APKs onto my desktop computer and then putting them on a Micro SD card to use on the A500 without having to root anything.

u can use Docs to go to navigate to .apk on your tablet and launch instal from there. Thats my way)

Congrats on getting your Inconia!
For apps like the filemanager you could just download them from the Android marketplace, then they would install themselves. Otherwise, place them on your sd card if you're downloading to your PC first. Apps will also install if they are in your download folder on the tablet (say for example, if you download from the dev's website or email them to yourself as an attachment).
One thing you might have to do first is check the setting that allows you to install "unsigned" third-party app. I believe it's: Setting->Applications->Unknown Sources.
From what I understand, there's not much concern of installing something harmful anymore (for which this setting was designed to protect against), but I could be wrong. Just be careful who you are getting the app from if it's not from the market, a dev's site or a reputable person here at the forum.

You don't need to root. Hypothetically, let's say you didn't have access to the Play Store and wanted to download and install apps. Just find the apk file for it, such as "File Manager APK," transfer to your phone, then click it to install it. It might ask you to go to settings to allow Unknown Downloads, and if it asked, do so. Only use this for free apps =D

Rooting helps with some apps that require it in particular, such as Titanium Backup. Rooting alone just helps unlock a few features, although it doesn't add anything until you act (unlike Jailbreaking which adds in Cydia and such). Read here
As for the free apps you can't get from Google Play, just searching on Google might bring something up.

I prefer to just install over adb.

Just pay for them. I used to do what you're talking about and its ****, not only was I ripping developers off and stifling their innovation, I was also wasting time looking for new updates and finding fixes
I don't sideload any paid apps now, if I like the app enough to want to look for the apk, I'll buy it ... If I can't afford it, I add it to my wishlist and purchase it when I can

Also, you should remember there is a risk on installing apps from an unknown source.
If you don't want to use the Play Store, you can download some APKs here, on XDA. Those apps are non-commercial versions released by the greatest developers in the world: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1913 , http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=530 .

Okay, I have a question;
There are some free apps that aren't available in some countries. Also, there are some free apps available on specific websites only which aren't on the Play Store (like free apps on XDA, Swype).
I tried emailing a free app to my friend- he has a Nexus 4- but it won't allow him to download the .apk file on his phone and run it. I've also tried to send .apk files to a Galaxy Nexus via Bluetooth but it says that the file isn't supported and fails to be sent on the phone!
Is there a solution to this or is the answer to simply transfer the file via the USB cable?

How are you sending the APK file? Through email? I know some emails block out files that can be 'dangerous'. For example, gmail doesn't let you transfer exe files.
What is the exact error that he's experiencing?

Or he may upload the file to sites such as mediafire. Or change the "Tail" of the file, from exe to anything else, or zip it.

I have the .apk file stored on my memory card of my Galaxy S3. I simply attached it to Gmail and sent it to his email address through my phone. I know for a fact that Gmail does not block .apk files so there's no need to zip them! He said that the phone would not let him install it. I really hope that he has "Unknown Sources" ticked. That would be embarrassing if he hasn't allowed that (he's new to Android and lives far away so it's hard to get a quick reply from him).
But onto my point of sending the .apk file via Bluetooth; it simply would not allow me to send it to a Galaxy Nexus (yes, I know this is a Nexus 4 forum but I feel that I'd experience the same issue on a Nexus 4). The file was not compatible, apparently (although it ran and installed fine on my Galaxy S3).
I simply don't have a Nexus device to test these things with and my friends keep asking me such questions that's why I'm asking around. It'd be great to know the answer so that I can fully recommend Nexus devices to iPhone users.

[Q] Adding browser back to [or fixing] a rooted Nook Simple Touch

If this isn't acceptable, apparently the source of the info is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346748 and I used the "the 'Normal + Xorzone's mods + adb Wifi' build "
Practiscore works flawlessly and my nook does what I need it to do. Now I have been thinking that it would be cool to be able to surf the web or at least be able to use the internet over wifi to load apps without having to load it on the SD card manually.
Right now, when I open the browser, it will actually open www.google.com when I set it to the home page but then crash whenever I try to do anything - even just clicking on the search box. The fact that it will actually open google, tells me my connection is working, but either the root process broke the browser, or something else is wrong. I can also open the market and get it to show me some apps, but it won't let me search or surf to any app. Searching just hangs and displays nothing.
I've tried searching but I haven't had any luck in picking the proper search terms to get an answer, and for some reason there is a script running wild on this page that refreshes it every 2 seconds interrupting what I am doing. That problem is probably on my PC, but firefox is what I have.

Ok, I got some things to install by d/l'ing the APK's directly to the SD card on a PC. I still haven't gotten the app store to work, or google.

The app store search will not work on your nook touch, the only way to install apps are either sideloading them or installing them wirelessly using google play on your computer.
You may want to use Opera Mobile instead of the basic browser, it would be easier than getting the stock one working.

Ok, this thing is just not working, everything I try in the market or using the browser just crashes. I downloaded the opera mini, but I didn't get an apk, so I have no idea how to install the extracted files. Most of the apk's I have found to put on here don't work either and just crash. I cant even get hangman or a crossword to load for pete's sake...

Did you root it to run Practiscore on?
If not, I'd suggest restoring your backup, upgrading to 1.2.1 firmware, then using NookManager with NTGAppsAttack (see the Nook Touch Android Development Forum here on xda). That worked just fine for me. But I don't need to run Practiscore.

2. use SeachMarket.apk to look for APK's in Google play.

You sir are a genius. The searchmarket and Opera mobile WORK!!
Now all I have to figure out is how to get rid of those extra apps [that suck and don't work]
Oh and maybe a pdf reader that works...
..and is the screen supposed to go all wonky for a second whenever I do anything? Or is there a new video driver?

Where are the game save files located on Android?

Got a galaxy note 3 and a note 10.1 2014 edition. both are not rooted.
I would like to transfer my progress in Injustice - Gods among us from my tablet to the phone.
Been looking online and in other threads here and the only option I saw is TI backup, which is for rooted devices.
I've checked the iOS setup, and they have a save file *.bin that they can use iFunbox to extract.
Is there no save file on Android? where is it?

Most of them in root/data/data. So you need root access as well. Maybe using adb you can pull it

Basically root not needed but some people say it depends on what you're doing. Perhaps if you're to copy a root file no root is needed but if you're trying to delete maybe root is needed(even so with correct permission still no root required)
But i don't know adb so not sure.

Try Helium, but you will need Helium (carbon) for pc also. You need to connect ur phone to pc, start carbon on pc and phone to enable it for backup or restore. Copy the backup file over Will do.

Ok, tried Helium but it didn't work.
In addition I have something to say about the Samsung service as a whole.
I tried to find the Samsung android USB drivers on the Samsung website but it's impossible to get anything useful out of it.
Eventually I found the most updated drivers on these forums.
After that I contacted Samsung online chat support to receive assistance on backing up in-app data.
Turns out, there's no way to do it with anything Samsung offers (WHICH IS ABSURD).
Such a basic functionality and it's not available through any Samsung app or feature.
The only thing the support did was to comfort me regarding this issue and telling me there's no way to do it unless I use a 3rd party app, which they cannot recommend.
I have never had such ****ty service from such a big company. It started with the update and it's just going downhill ever since.
Unbelievable.

TL DNR: Helium worked perfectly for me with my Galaxy S4 and my new Galaxy S7, both of these devices are non-rooted and I used the free version of Helium. Continue reading for a walkthrough of what worked for me and will hopefully work for you.
I just got a Galaxy S7 (I upgraded from a Galaxy S4) and I wanted to keep my progress from all of my games so I wouldn't have to start from square one. All I had to do was download Helium on both of my phones and the desktop program. Then I connected my S4 to my desktop using a usb cable, opened Helium and followed the on screen instructions to backup whichever apps I chose. After that I set my S4 to connect via MTP and opened my phone on my desktop. The file path should look like this My Computer\Your_Phones_Name\Phone\carbon (carbon is the folder where Helium saves the app data that you chose to backup). Copy all the app folders you want, then follow pretty much the same steps for connecting your new device to your desktop and paste the folders from your old device in your new device's carbon folder. Once you've done that, on your new device open Helium and go to Restore And Sync, Internal Storage, select your apps to restore, and then finally enjoy your progress that you deserve!

A much much easier solution is to make use of the cloud backup feature in the game.
Just make a WBID account in-game and all your progress will be backed up. If you reinstall the game on the same device or another, just make sure you sign in with your WBID and a prompt with Superman will appear giving you the option to restore your progress.
DO NOT RESTORE USING THE CLOUD BUTTON AT THE TOP RIGHT CORNER IN THE MAIN MENU as Google Play Games cloud restore is broken in Injustice and you'll lose your progress!!!
I find this method alot easier than fiddling with system files =)

How to get adb to do that please? I'm new to this stuff. I tried adb root but it says "adbd cannot run as root in production builds" I'm using linux if that helps. Device I'm trying to extract from is non-rooted OnePlus 3T.

So in the internal storage (NOT ROOT), you first need to know the first company maker of the app & then the first name of the app (example : tiktok would be somthing.musically) because of the package name & how it updates & stuff.
Now when you go to the Android Folder, you see data, this is where (most) files are saved for progress & is usually in here where data gets wiped by settings for apps, scroll down for your app, click on it & then...
find a way to put all those files into your other device.
(this is also how some people cheat their way through games like subway surfers unless they're a bit complicated for most users lol)

Cannot install apps on rooted NSTG

iOS have rooted my NSTG using glownooter and all went well in that it boots and everything is there as expected. Unfortunately I can see no way of getting apps on it. I have tried the following
-installing using browser, it crashes
-Opera mini does not work
- installing new browser, none available in market (I'm sure I've found dolphin there previously. )
-Amazon AppStore, does not work
-gmail attached app, cannot download
-email app, crashes
-google drive, box, Dropbox links in gmail, launches browser which crashes
-super manager crashes
I would really appreciate any help, all I really want is the kindle app working as the nook store is no more.

OK, well, you've tried just about everything that can't/won't work
How about something that will? Copy the apps onto your SD card and locate them with a file manager (nice older version of ES File Explorer attached below). Tap the apk file and it should install. You can do this with the Kindle app as well. Unless you've got GApps working and can access the Market via the SearchMarket app, side-loading like this is your only recourse (well, almost....there's also ADB).

Hi thanks for the comments. I would love to get ES file explorer on the Nook but I have no way of installing any apks so I can't see how I can side load the apps. Previously I have got the first app from the market and gone from there but there does not seem to be any apps I can use to do this. I'm guessing I'll have to investigate ADB.

So there is a bigger issue. I'm not familiar with glownooter but I did look it up. Whether you used that exact same version or not, it sounds like you have the makings of Market access, not to mention abdwireless. If you can get the Market up and running then you can download any old file manager that will install just to get going, or you can get apps directly from the PlayStore (though the pickings are somewhat limited for Android 2.1
So what's the real issue? Have you tried the GApps sign-in procedure? Did it not work? The glownooter package is supposed to include Market and then you get SearchMarket from the PlayStore once you're signed in. From there, the rest is easy.
If you don't have any apps on your NTG like Market, or YouTube, or GMail, then something is not right about your rooting process.

Ok, patience appeared to be the key. I checked after a couple of days and the ntg had appeared as a device on the play store which it wasn't originally. I now have a file explorer and Amazon. Unfortunately Amazon won't download any books but one thing at a time. Thanks for the help, Frank.

Good! Yes, the PlayStore dance takes time for whatever reason.
If by "Amazon" you mean Kindle, then you will need to update your certificates in order to interface with the books you have stored with Amazon. See here for more info.

Hi, I'm a very new user here. How do I rename this like you suggest? I've tried doing it through the adb shell (via ADB Konnect utility) and it complained about being read-only (yes, I am root and even su'ed to be sure)
# mv Browser.apk Browser.apk.bak
failed on 'Browser.apk' - Read-only file system
Then, I installed ES File Explorer (v3.1.0.1) and tried doing it through that interface, where it complained simply "Task failed". Then, I thought "wait...I should make sure I have root permissions given to this app", found the setting, got root, tried again and got a message indicating success! Except...the file didn't actually get renamed.
I'm out of ideas and time for now. Help is greatly appreciated!

I have not used adb to rename, but I have used both Root Browser and ES File Explorer to rename apk files (never know when you might want it back....) without any problem. It should not be necessary to change the permissions on the system/app or data/app folders--or the apk files themselves. The file explorers do require root access, but it sounds like you have that covered.
I am a little distrustful of the newer ES File Explorers, as they are mucho bloated and troublesome to use on the NST/NTG sometimes. Maybe try the one attached to this post? It's what I finally settled on (but you have to go to SearchMarket first and mark ES FE as "do not autoupdate" or the older version will just be wiped out).

Thanks. Yeah, I tried that one out earlier, but I couldn't see right away how to browse around in / like I could easily do in a 3.* version of ES FE which I had tried out first. Will play around with it more now...GOT IT! :laugh:
I'm also intent on disabling the Amazon Appstore now, but I can't figure out which apk(s) to rename. Should I just do a regular uninstall then?
While at it, I disabled some of the apps recommended here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933615) because I saw how damn much the phone utilities were killing my battery life!!
So I can't find the thread where I found this earlier, but here are a ton of older versions of that apk if anyone things that's useful: http[://]es-file-explorer.en.uptodown[dot]com/android/old (sorry, about the [dot] stuff, as a new user I can't post external URLs yet).

It's something like com.venezia...blah-blah...near the end of the app list in data/apps. Just uninstall it. When it was still working back in the old days it was always giving me trouble with nags of one sort or another. It's just one piece and useless so might as well uninstall.
While at it, I disabled some of the apps recommended here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933615) because I saw how damn much the phone utilities were killing my battery life!!

You might be surprised about some of the "phone stuff" and power consumption. The mechanism for reporting battery use on the NST leaves something to be desired. See my post here. In any case, the actual phone.apk is responsible for android media volume control so if you ever pursue USB Audio, you'll need it. The telephony.apk, not needed.
So I can't find the thread where I found this earlier, but here are a ton of older versions of that apk if anyone things that's useful: http[://]es-file-explorer.en.uptodown[dot]com/android/old (sorry, about the [dot] stuff, as a new user I can't post external URLs yet).

Ya, that was from me There are a number of threads with packages/lists/links of older versions/working versions of apps. One of the more recent is here.

There it is...ended up being called com.android.venezia.apk. I deleted it from the ES FE interface after failing to be able to do it through adb uninstall on my computer. Still need to figure out how to get write permissions there, apparently.a
