I might have screwed up - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got a mega, kept it for a few days (less than 14), rooted with kingo, decided I wanted a note 3. Waited until the last minute to unroot with super su, wiped data and rebooted to see it still said "custom". Oops. Also, when it booted after reset had an error message, but I quickly turned it off and put it in the box. They didn't check it, just gave me my note 3 and I left. Are the cops going to knock on my door?
And I've read conflicting posts on whether kingo will trip knox on the at&t n900a?

Removing "Custom" from the boot screen for a return

Hello everyone,
I've been looking around the forum but I haven't been able to find an answer to this. Right now I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy S4 from Verizon (I rooted it using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798). The device is currently fully rooted with the original ROM in place (I have not installed ANY custom ROM's ever). I am looking to return the phone to the store tonight but when I unroot through SuperSU and then do a factory wipe (through the settings tab not through any special program) I get the "Custom" message upon booting up again. I have tried rooting/unrooting a number of times with no success. My current position is as follows: I am rooted using the aforementioned method, I have not installed a custom ROM so I assume that I am on the stock ROM, I have installed SuperSU and TriangleAway (TriangleAway says that I have a 0 flash counter). If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it as I might need to return the S4 to the store within the next 2 hours to get my refund. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide and I apologize for the quickness of my request.
Truncated link for the root method
It looks like the forum truncated my link. Here is the full address for the root method I used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798 . Thanks again!
What I would do is go to the Android Development forum and download Sextape's one click restore for MDC. It will wipe everything from the internal card and reset you back to MDC. Take the OTA to MDL if you wish.
Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258827
Pretty sure it will wipe out any custom indications. I've used the one-click methods for years on the E4GT and here on the S4. Very convenient.
I just went through the same thing. What I did is triangle away, defrost any system apps that maybe frozen disable supersu, reboot, and wallah "official". I repeated these steps twice as the first time it did not take.
P.s. when I ran a frozen system app filter in TB I saw an app called sys scope that was frozen and I don't recall ever freezing that app. Hell, i don't even know what it does but I defrosted it anyway
and all is well

Triangle away doesn't work for MF9 just yet I believe, but it did for MDC. Can always Odin back there, then run triangle away. Ughh, i hate trips to the sprint store

Rooted MF3 Exchange AT&T

I renewed my at&t 2 year contract on Sept 5th and upgraded to an s4. The phone has given me nothing but problems from the moment I first touched it. Long story short is that im taking it back to the store tomorrow and returning it. I called the store today and the girl on the phone basically said that since im still within my 14 days it will be a straight across trade for a new s4. I didn't mention to her that the phone is rooted and debloated. When I first received the phone it wasn't running the MF3 firmware. I unlocked and rooted the phone and installed a couple different roms trying to eliminate the near unusability due to lag and freezing. (I Know I should have just returned the phone immediately) I ended up soft bricking the phone while flashing custom firmware... So I used odin to get back to the original stock firmware, then did the at&t MF3 upgrade and rooted. Question- I know this is doubtful, but does anyone know of a way to restore the MF3 firmware to stock? If not, what should I do to get the phone as close to stock as possible? I was thinking I could reinstall all of the AT&T bloat from the playstore, turn them back into system applications via titanium back up and the uninstall SuperSU. The current device status under about device is listed as "Official"...

Thanks for the reply! Do you think I would absolutely need to do that before taking it in for exchange, or do you think restoring the bloat and uninstalling SuperSU would be sufficient. BestBuy is kinda out of the way for me but I would do it if it was absolutely necessary...Thanks
I called today and they told me at best buy to come in and they coukd restore it to stock but I think you would be fine just removing SU

Yea if it still says official under device status you're fine. Uninstall all rooted apps like greenify, superSU, titanium backup, etc... Make sure you defrost/enable any freezed/disable apps just in case.
When you go in tomorrow, stay positive and act as if nothing happened.

I took the phone in yesterday and got a stubborn rep who wanted to trouble shoot and blah blah blah. She took the phone in the back. When she came out she said all the phone needed was a new sim. I said no I want a new phone. So she said to come back tomorrow when the manager is there. Whatever she did to the phone caused the custom status to return. I had official status upon entering the store. Dont know how that happened. Im off to att to see if I can trade it in today.

Sounds like what I went thru. Brought my new phone home and accidently updated to MF3 without knowing I screwed myself in the process. Returned 2 days later complaining of random reboots and sod's. They tried to troubleshoot my phone and told me a restore was needed to get my fon right. Told them if they don't replace my S4 with a new one I'll cancel the contract right on the spot.
After about an hour of their blah blah blah they gave me a brand new 32gb on MDL and I'm happily rooted now on CM... I'm liking this phone a lot now!

Yesterday I took the phone into BestBuy to have them flash it with MF3 to try and get rid of the custom status and boot screen. They looked at me like I was speaking Chinese when I asked them to do this in the phone dept. Even the geek squad had no idea what I was talking about. They said they had no way to reflash the phone. All they could do was restore the phone within the settings...UHG!! So no luck there on going back to official status. I found instructions here in the forum that work like a charm for going back to official status and getting rid of the custom boot screen. I used theses steps. All thanks go to Senior Member - ou812bkewl
1. Re-root again using the same method you did before for MF3, then:
--a) Reboot, update SuperSU app and it's binary
--b) Reboot again, verify device status is back to"Official"
--c) Reboot again, verifying that, this time, the boot screen is back to normal again
2. Download a file manager app in the Play Store called "Total Commander" and enable "Root functions everywhere" in its settings.
3. Navigate to a folder called "/system/xbin"
4. Delete ONLY files in that folder with the word "busybox" within its filename or symlink path. You should end up with three files left. I did. Two of them are SuperSU related. DO NOT DELETE ANY OF THEM!
5.Open SuperSU and, in its settings, select the "Full un-root" option. Once SuperSU closes, reboot.
When you reboot, wait a full minute and check on device status. It should still say "Official" and you will be fully un-rooted.
So im completly unrooted and official...Im off to the AT&T store shortly to try and exchange this thing...wish me luck!

I made it to the att authorized dealer where I bought the phone. The manager was totally cool and exchanged the phone for me no problems. The new phone came with the MDL firmware as well as the first. This phone was not buggy and laggy out of the box like the last one. I updated the firmware to the mf3 build and decided to leave it unrooted until there is an unlock and restore method for this build. This phone is working great and having no problems. I'm pleased

I hope you don't ever want to install a custom rom. Since you did that, you will likely never be able to.
I'm not really worried about. I pretty much enjoy a stock experience. I have two nexus 7 tablets for hacking and playing with mods. I use this phone for my business and I'm just after a straight forward experience. If there's ever an app that I want that requires root I can always root this firmware. And I would be surprised if this bootloader stays locked forever.

MJ7 Root........

For those who have taken the MJ7 update and realized that you can't regain root. Kingo is working on a solution. Verizon likes to lock their loaders so it takes a little time to break them. I had to take my note to a Best Buy store about an hour from where I live to have them reset my phone from what is being labeled a Softbrick. If anyone knows a way to root the SM-900V with MJ7 please let me know.
Thanks,
GoNavyMike
I took the update a week ago and just rooted with kingo yesterday..all I did was follow instructions withing the app and was rooted minutes later . ... Installed safe strap with beans on slot 2..all is well except I can't get the custom logo to go away from the boot up screen but I don't really care

I have no idea why people claim kingo doesn't work. It works fine, I and many others have used it on newest update without issue. Also, this isn't development.

The Kingo does work for the Verizon Note 3. I literally just did it. At first, it kept saying not supported, but I tried it again with my screen timeout off and I saw that when my phone was connected to Kingo, something popped up warning me something was trying to exploit my phone, click on the box and hit install. Then not long after that your phone will reboot and grant permission stuff will come up. You can either do it this way, or under security uncheck verify apps located under unknown sources.
So on the kingo screen, when selecting the OS mine only goes up to 4.2.2. I am obviously running 4.3 on the note 3. Do I pull the trigger? Or am I missing an update?

Worked for me and mine said the same thing. "4.2.2" Took me a couple minutes or so and all is good!
I have been hung up on "waiting for device" (after fetching scripts) for about 10 minutes now. Wondering when I should pull the plug. ...
It's a no go... Maybe because it's VZ?

Kingo works for mj7, if you get hung up on waiting for device, close the kingo app restart computer, open kingo, plug phone into a different usb port.

YES guys, you can root your phone VIA Kingo even if you updated to the newer firmware. My scenario, got my N3 bone stock, rooted it on MJ9 via kingo and worked. Applied OTA update to version to MJ7 and lost root. Used kingo again and gained root. Works totally fine and SS works fine as well.
Still nothing. .I am running win 8 through VM firmware. I wonder if that's my prob. I get all the way to the last step and it hangs. I rooted my Galaxy nexus with this virtual win machine. I might have to borrow a windows laptop

Does anyone have a link to Kingo. I can't get mine to go in Odin, I click to import the file, hit start, and it doesn't do anything. Does the De la Vega file have to be renamed? I'm usually pretty good at getting these things rooted, this seems to be dealing me fits. I NEED ROOT lol
Other issue is that 7zip will not extract the de la Vega file, says it can't open as a archive
Why is this thread so long? Kingo works with MJ7. Nuff said. If the OP would of read the Verizon Note 3 threads for 10-15 minutes he/she would of found this out.

VM could definitely be part of your problem, especially if you do not have Internet access through it. USB connections can sometimes be flaky as well.

The kingo app will do it, make take a few tries and you'll probably have to do it from an actual Windows PC, but it should work. I'd probably try to use a USB 2.0 port rather than a 3.0, if possible.

[Q] Is Kingo not working at all?

I'm interested in the new ROMs that are out but before I start playing I want to have my odin and root steps up to date. I notice that there have been several folks have had kingo fail and have had to use vroot. Is this the standard to use now? Just want to be sure I'm doing this correctly.
I'm on the current baseband and kernel, if that helps.
Thanks in advance.

I used Vroot the other day to re root my phone after a reset and replaced the Chinese superuser with Chainfires supersu. You can install it either via Playstore or flash it in safestrap witch I prefer. Also be sure to uninstall whatever other Chinese app gets installed. I have no idea what it is because I can't read it. As a added precaution I also removed my sim card during root. As for Kingo It didn't work for me but there is activity on their twitter account.

Worked for me too with MJE. Used USB 3.0 cable in USB 3.0 mode MTP. Prior to that failed in ODIN mode and in MTP mode without USB 3.0. But may be just random luck. Now have Supersu app.
Questions:
1. Should I use that Supersu or change. Looks like same old Supersu, but the version with yellow superman shield and red # sign.
2. Also, it asks if I want to disable Knox. Should I do that? Does that risk tripping know counter?

Keep supersu but update it to the current v1.93 either by Play Store or flashing in safestrap and yes disable Knox it will not trip the counter. Enjoy.
Yes K works even though it says it fails. I posted my experience back on Feb 3 in another similar thread or look via my profile. In short it will say that it failed but su app shows up and use a root checker to verify. Removal of sd card and pulling and replacing the sim card before root might help. Also watch you phone for a security permission to add an app. I sat an extra five minutes before realizing it.

Anyone on Rooted NC4 and Safestrapped?

I was on MJE rooted and safestrapped. No problems. I put SuperSu in survival mode, took the OTA...knowing full well the bootloader issue (I had played with NC2 with NC4 modem for a while and had tons of issues)...I am still rooted on NC4 no problems doing anything rootlike...except Safestrap 3.72 will not set the boot up to give me the choice to recover or continue no matter what. So I even tried Safestrap 3.73...when I install the recovery...3.73 says it completed and shows "installed" But still no choice at boot time.
Has anyone gotten this to work?

Yea...I am for sure still rooted, just not safestrapped, I am still playing with it and was just wondering if anyone had already done so.

Please see the mini guide I just posted at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2762999 for information on how to go from a STOCK MJE non rooted phone to one with KitKat 4.4.2 rooted (odex or deodex). As well as move to a custom non stock rom.

Because I was thinking I would try a reflash with Odin if needed. I've been "trying stuff" with UNIX based servers since the early 80's. I have no problem reflashing a phone.

BusyBox is installed, and active, and SafeStrap checks for it and Safestrap says it's installed...but even hitting the Reboot to Recovery button does a "normal" reboot and I don't get the recover/continue option.

After reading your post I went ahead and tried to take the NC4 OWA with supersu in survival mode. It Worked! I was on stock mje, rooted with kingo and had a modded framework for tethering. I restored the backup of my stock framework file, then unfroze all of my apps. I put supersu in survival mode, disabled superuser, and turned default access to deny. I then enabled the install of the OWA and after the reboot I enabled supersu and just like that I still had root. So far no issues.
As far as safestrap goes, I didn't have safestrap before but I may try to install it to see if it works now. I'll let you know.

Third time is a charm I guess. I uninstalled the recovery, rebooted, reinstalled the recovery, hit the reboot to recovery and got to Safestrap just fine. And it now gives me the choice during reboot.
