[Q] which ROM for Droid without using as phone? - Droid X General

Hi, I was asked by a friend to root/unlock their Droid X for them to use as a wifi only device (no phone).
It's currently running
System Version - 4.5.621.MB810.Verizon.en.US
Android Version - 2.3.4
Baseband Version - BP_C_01.09.15P
Kernel Version - 2.6.32.9-g1282440
Build Number - 4.5.1_57_DX8-51
ERI version - 5
PRL version 52290
I have run the z4root.1.3.0.apk and it said it worked, but I have not been able to verify root access yet, although Superuser is installed, so I assume it worked.
I also installed com.koushikdutta.droidx.bootstrap-1.apk per the "new to Droid" thread, but then saw another article saying NOT to install that and to install Droid3CWBootstrap.apk, which I also did.
When I launch Droid 3 Bootstrapper, it loads fine and when I click on Bootstrap Recovery, it says "Success!", but doesn't show superuser asking for root rights (nor does it do anything else). When I click on Reboot Recovery, nothing happes.
I've also tried to install Titanium Backup from the Play store, but it fails to install (about 10 times now), so it feels like something isn't quite right here.
At the end of the day, I want to permanently remove the Activation screen, and allow the device to function as a device with wifi access, but without any phone use/issues/whatever.
I'm currently downloading a couple of ROM's (shadow-AOKPMedia-1.5.zip & liquid_shadow-ics-v2.0.zip), based on what I've read, but they will take an hour or more to finish, so if I need/want something different, please let me know.
How is best to proceed from here?

I am using my Droid X with LiquidICS v2.0 as a WiFi-only device and it is working great. I just left airplane mode on so I do not get the activation screen.
If you still could not boot into recovery, I suggest that you SBF it again, and root using Framaroot.

Thanks. I read about an app that modified airplane mode to allow wifi, but couldn't find it in the Play store. I also saw a thread that talked about modifying airplane mode to allow wifi, but have not tried to do that yet.
Are you just turning it on/off as you need/want access, or did you modify airplane mode somehow?
I'm still waiting for the SBF to download, then will try flashing it in Linux and then try framaroot again. I've verified that it is NOT giving me root, even though the app says that it has. it has installed SuperUser and SuperSU, but Titanium and RootChecker both tell me I do not have root.
Hopefully the starting from scratch method will work for me.

That is not necessary, especially on an ICS ROM. You could still turn WiFi on with Airplane mode on; WiFi and Airplane mode will stay on even after reboots (on ICS ROMs).

Okay. I'm downloading the SBF file now, hopefully my ISP will not drop me before it finishes.
I checked and my versions all seem to be the newest, so I have to assume that this phone took the OTA at some point, or that someone flashed it onto the phone. I don't understand why framaroot isn't working on this phone. Are there any other settings I need to make/change to help get it to work? I have not activated the phone since doing a factory reset about an hour ago. Does the phone need to be active for this to work? I'm not in Verizon coverage, so I have no way to really activate it from here.

The latest stock version is 45.621.10.MB810. Rooting using Framaroot should be relatively direct, and activation is not needed. Have you tried all the options in Framaroot? I don't recall the options as I am running LiquidICS now...

I got the phone sbf flashed, then rooted, then installed the Droid 3 bootstrapper. All good. I then installed liquid_shadow-ics-v2.0 only to discover it only has English as the language available.
I then flashed shadow-AOKPMedia-1.5_001 and it has all languages (I only need/want Spanish and English), but it won't let me connect to the Play store. I tried several times, on several accounts, but it says I may not have data enabled.
I tried installing gapps-gb-20110828-signed, but it's FC all over the place. I've tried factory resetting, but still have issues.
If I can get Spanish into liquid_shadow, it seemed to be great.
Any other suggestions for resolution to these issues?

Did you verify md5 checksums for rom and gapps?
There are language apps in play store that you can install, edit; for certain apps like keyboards
That is wrong gapps rom (aokp) is ICS you need ICS apps

Yeah, checked all MD5 checksums (and had to re-download several things, several times )
Just took a quick look at play store for language apps, but nothing looked promising right away.
However, I wiped and reinstalled the ROM and the gapps (the correct one, for ICS), and all seems okay at this point.
thanks for all the help.

Froze blur.res 2.3.6

I froze this app because I decided I would try freezing some apps and was going by the thread on here that has a big list. When I froze this app my phones email and calendar stopped working. I tried unfreezing it and instead of it going back to the app list it just seemed to disappear, it was no longer in the frozen list or the app list. So I just tried a factory reset and now I can't do anything as the phone I keep getting force closes on Accounts, is there anything I can do?
If you REALLY want to stay blurred, go with a fruitcake:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009
Otherwise, improve your phone by going with one of the many nice ROMs in the Dev section. Neutrino/Joker's CM9 are my favorites.
And in case you aren't all ROMtastic yet, unlock your bootloader (MAKE SURE THIS IS OK FOR YOUR BLURRED SELF FIRST. I HAVE NOT BEEN KEEPING UP WITH 2.3.6 ISSUES AS I LEFT BLUR A LONG TIME AGO), flash Romracer's most recent recovery, and then flash the CWM zip for whatever ROM you go for.
If you end up bricking yourself, this may or may not be useful:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22583493&postcount=139
well it isn't an issue of a new rom or anything I want, my phone is unusable right now because I froze the blur.res 2.3.6, and with the factory reset I can't do anything because the second it comes on I get force closes on 'Accounts'
And my suggestion is flash a new ROM. If you are concerned about keeping your data, try an adb pull of whatever you want to hang on to.
Oh, and try adb install (ing) the specific apk you froze (grab it from the /system/app under the fruitcake for your ROM).
ohhh haha sorry I misunderstood, but I guess I'll give it a try if it's really all I can do. I'll try to find the apk from the fruitcake rom first though and see if I can do that first, is there any link for how to do an adb install? Thanks!
I just read that people who OTA'd to 2.36 without unlocking earlier have lost the ability to do so. Just regurgitating, again I unlocked forever ago and don't worry about ATT's ball and chain anymore.

No what I read says people on your version (2.36) can't unlock. You should verify this by reading around.

The only way currently to root a phone on 4.5.141 is to use the fastboot method. The procedure and files can be found here:

As for unlocking, I've been told that the old method for 4.5.91 works on 4.5.141. It can be found here:

No problem, man. Let the community know how it goes, and for future reference, use the Thanks button (I don't care too much haha). Welcome by the way. A well-asked first post, though it should have been in Q+A
Haha and I will post again with results probably tomorrow
Okay i'm back and very pleased, I unlocked the bootloader with the automatic script tool linked earlier and then used the script for Tenfars recovery in it as well. After that, since I couldn't actually get on the phone to update CWM I just went ahead and tried flashing a ROM. I used Gingermod, I wanted to try Neutrino ROM but I couldn't get to the download links for some reason, anyway Gingermod is now installed (after trying the tegrapart 1100 kernel, I didn't know which one I have so I tried that one after looking at some forums saying most ATT Atrix's are 1100). I had everything backed up with Titanium Backup previously so restoring all my apps was simple, and everything seems good so far thanks again to omni_angel7!

No problem, man. Glad it worked out for you. I'd give neutrino a chance when the links work for you again. Welcome to ROMaholics anonymous! Oh, and to prevent any future error, make sure to get ROMRACER's recovery (recommended) or the most recent CWM. Tenfar's is outdated AFAIK.
Yeah, I heard that as well so I updated CWM with ROM manager. And I found a download for Neutrino so I have it saved on my computer currently, I'm going to wait a few days though and just see how Gingermod goes (since it's smooth and the battery seems good so far)

[Q] So, I think I completely broke my phone

I hate to use the term "brick" because people here sometimes get their panties in a twist when that term is used, but that's kind of how it seems to me. Currently all I can get to is fastboot. It says the device is locked and then says:
Downgraded security version
update gpt_main version failed
failed to hab check for gpt_backup: 0x35
failed to load gpt
CID read failure
Invalid CID status 0x69
I've tried holding vol up, vol down and power, then releasing power while holding vol up and vol down. It got me right back to where I am.
If it helps, I got here by messing with some settings on the phone and somehow disabling all voice functionality on my phone. Data still worked, but not voice. I figured since I had messed it up, I would factory reset. This fixed that problem. Then I went into TB and restored my system data and apps. The phone then got stuck at the boot screen. I figured I'd go into recovery, wipe again and restore just the apps this time. When I did that, the phone got stuck in it's current status. I fired up the Razr M utility that's out there (w/the Batman logo) and tried to re-flash stock recovery and the stock rom. Both failed claiming my partition is bad. I'm not sure where to go here or I've permanently broken the device. The bootloader is unlocked if that helps at all.

That's what I've been using. The text based app w/the batman logo. I tried the motochopper exploit (option 5). It failed. I tried option 2, then option 1. It bricked the phone. Had to boot into the recovery partition to fix it and let stock recovery run which gave me a phone I couldn't root. I'll try it again though.
Never mind. Second try worked.

Semi-bricked Droid 2. Can't find EZSBF.

Hey guys, I'm trying to fix my droid 2 that currently says:
MEM_MAP BLANK
Service Req'd
Battery OK
OK To program
Connect USB
Data cable
I'm sure this has been seen before, 'cause there was an iso a while ago that was named ezsbf, I believe. I can't find this for the life of me, anymore, as it seems the original downloads were taken down, and I can't find a proper mirror. Does anyone still have this, and would they mind providing it?
Or, if you have another idea on how to fix this, that'd be awesome. :s

try wiping data or reflash sbf
---------- Post added at 10:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:37 AM ----------
do you have a phone currently active on verizon? if so you can temp activate the d2, and that will stick until you wipe data again.
Hm, if it's the only way, I'm not sure what's going wrong and why that method isn't working...
I'll try wiping here in a minute, and I suppose I could activate it if need be.
Edit: Yeah, tried wiping didn't work. Might have to activate it on Verizon for a moment.
since the ota update and scripts were updated the only way to sbf is by using rsdlite with the 2.3.4 sbf file. if it fails try reinstall the drivers or update the ones you have. i spent literally all day not too long ago trying to sbf back to stock and finally found the 2.3.4 sbf file and at first it failed but then i unistalled the old drivers and reinstalled them and it worked flawlessly.

[Q] DROID 2 will not boot... really have tried everything...

Hello, all. I am new and am here for one reason today.
Recently, my dad got a new phone and said that I could mess around with his old Droid 2. I decided to root and try and install CM9 on it to get Android 4. That failed, and I was stuck with a bricked phone.
Basically, I was able to successfully root it, but when it came to install CM and its package of Google apps, the phone would not boot past the "M" logo. Here is the site I used mainly to guide me... (website prevents me from posting this link but I will soon update)
Maybe this site is what led me wrong. The downloads of CM9, the Recovery Bootstrap thingy, and the Google apps came from separate sites each... I think maybe they may've been incompatible with each other.
I did what was logical. I removed the battery, tried to power it on again, maybe even somehow boot into ClockworkMod recovery and not have to start over. Sadly this did not work.
Then, I decided to do a bit of research... I then tried to wipe the phone and reboot. Fail.
I finally came across this video which I resorted to... (website prevents me from posting this link but I will soon update)
I would have to unbrick it... a long tedious process, then start from square one... with not guarantee that it'll even work again.
Through this video, I ran into my final problem... it seems my phone won't even load the Bootloader! Every single time I try, it says "Battery Low...Cannot program". It seems there may be a problem with the battery, SINCE I'VE BEEN CHARGING IT FOR 12 HOURS! My theory about this is that it is trying to load CM from my previous attempt, but drains so much battery trying to do so that the battery itself has very little charge. Another note: whenever I plug it in, the phone goes to the "M" logo and freezes. There's no way to completely turn off the thing, except to unplug it and take out the battery. So, I can't even get the bootloader to work in order to unbrick it! That's about as worse it can get.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My question to you guys is... what would you do in my place? I am still intent on getting CM on this device, but I can't even fix my current state!
1) how to fix my current problem?
2) experienced rooters and rom-flashers: how to get CM9 (Android 4) on this device without bricking it again?
--- Note that I am a noob and this is my first time doing such a thing. I need ALL details!
Thank you guys sooo much for your time!
does label under battery say a955 or a956?

Like I said, I know I can use RSD for a reset, but the thing is the bootloader won't work. The battery is bad, I think, so it ends up saying, "Battery low, Cannot program". Even if I plug it into the computer nothing happens.

Ok. I will see what I can do. I briefly went over that option in your list.. it seems risky. I am not a person that wants to mess with wires and risk explosions. If I buy another battery, will that do the trick? That'd be safer. I'd rather pay that risk that other stuff. Could you provide me a link to a good battery? I know it sounds dumb but I don't want to get the wrong model.
Thanks for all of your help. I think I'll use your guide to root and get CM9 on that phone.
When I do get the battery and am ready to root and flash, do you think you could chat here step by step with me? I don't want to mess this up again, and you seem like the experienced type of person. Online guides don't really have the best step by step guidance, and even videos sometimes don't do the trick. Though, if you are busy but happen to have a link to a good video, could you send it to me? Thanks!

Sorry if that was not clear, I haven't updated that for a while.
Low battery options There are 3 options the first is a warning and not recommended MacGyver Method, 2. is Factory Programming / Fastboot Cable, 3rd is a spare battery charger (with link), and 4th would be borrow a charged battery. A new battery may not be charged enough to flash.

I see, I see. So from what I see here, I should buy the Black Hat thing and the charger and try those options to reset my phone.
I have see a YouTube vid where a guy from RootJunky shows you how to do this, so I will be using that as a guide, unless you recommend another way.
Once I have reset my phone, could you help me root and get ICS on my Droid? I still am intent on getting Android 4 on this phone, now more out of trying to solve the mess I've gotten myself into that actually enjoying the final result. Not that I don't want ICS, but I want to learn how to do this the right way. If there is a good YouTube video about how to get CM9 on the Droid 2 or something similar, could you direct me there? Or, do you just recommend the guide you have?
Thanks again.

Ok. I have successfully rooted my device and have done a nandroid backup.
I am obviously moving on to actually getting a rom on my phone. Before I start, I have a few questions.
- Is there anything I need to do right now? My current state includes a root and a nandroid backup. What other tweaks do I need to make as of right now>?
- I cannot find a good link to CM9 for Droid 2. Either the site is a virus website or my computer thinks it is. Can you give me a direct link here? In addition, could you provide me with a link to a Gapps link as well? I saw a few links in the guide and heard from RootJunky that Gapps should be installed with any ICS build, but I can never find a page where both are listed and are confirmed to be compatible. Last time, I had gotten both from different sites, and I think they were not compatible.
So, here is what I have in mind. Correct me or add to me if I miss something.
1) download the CM9 build from some site onto PC
2) download the Gapps from some site onto PC
3) attach phone to PC and copy both to a folder on the storage
4) boot into ClockworkMod Recovery and wipe all data
5) in Clockwork also wipe the cache
6) in Clockwork there is some option to "install from SD card". Select that
7) find the CM9 and select that
8) after selecting CM9, also select the Gapps
9) let it run installation process and reboot.
NOTE: the above is almost exactly what I did last time, except I didn't wipe cache and I didn't do a nandroid backup
From the above, do you think I will be successful?

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 G930A Root Install Instructions?

If anybody can put up a step-by-step guide, or a video that shows how to properly install it all, I'm sure myself, and much of the community would appreciate it.
Recently, my laptop that I had ADB, and every tool imaginable for Androids, and specifically the Galaxy Series, took a huge dump on me and I lost it all. I installed it so long ago, that embarrassingly I've forgotten how I did it all. If someone could post how they rooted their GS7 (non-edge variant), I would be very appreciative. And I'm sure much of the community would be too. I'm embarrassed to even have to ask as someone who used to formerly develop mods on phones. But it is what it is. It's been so long since I've set it all up, and I've had to do so much since that time that I've simply forgotten how I did it/how to do it. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you ahead of time...
I've tried following the instructions in the sticky above. I ran the 930X ROOT.TAR in the special version of ODIN. And every ran OK. It said "Success" and then rebooted. All seemed well, then it froze on the AT&T Boot Logo. What can I do from here? I know from history that this is one of the points that people panic and claimed "brick" (though I've never seen a real brick from rooting). Any help would be greatly appreciated
There's a great guide in the Verizon forum. Root was universal based on FW. Just make sure you flash the correct 930 or 935 with the modded odin. I recommend you follow the steps to "unroot" for the sake of doing an extremely in depth factory reset. Also make sure you get chain fires latest supersu built for the s7qc.

yup. Great instructions. All set rooted now. Now time to play with xposed and V4A and the like. Yay
OK. Followed the instructions on the Verizon page and used the PrinceComsy version. Stuck at the AT&T logo. How did you go past this step? Should I have used the standard version? thanks

(keep in mind this is only my personal experience...)
but the PrinceComsy version of ODIN was the only one to work for me. How far exactly have you gotten in the process before you got stuck at the logo? You do have ADB installed correctly installed on your PC and turned on on your phone right? and cd-ed the specific "super" folder for the SU adb install, right? FYI: It's not a simple root process, like 1-click roots on previous devices. This is more similar to the in-depth root methods like on the N1 and D1 before super nice devs went out of their way to make it simple. So if you're not familiar with ADB shell and the likes, it'll be difficult for you. But, no matter how high and mighty or condescending people act, we've all had to start somewhere. I'll help you get through the process as much as I can
Thanks for your reply. BTW I am fairly experienced in this stuff. This is what I did to get it to work. ADB and drivers all work fine.
Flashed the boot image using the PrinceComsy version. Got stuck at AT&T logo
Attempted to flash with the other version of Odin. When I open Odin, a window would pop-up with some ini issue and Odin would close immediately.
So I moved the ini file from PrinceComsy version to the other version. At this point, Odin would open and detect the phone at the correct COM port
Tried flashing it with this Odin but I got a SHA256 error
SO..
I went back to stock (which deletes all data, no big deal - everything was backed up)
Boot was successful
Re-flashed with the boot image and viola!

OK. Proceeding with the recommended steps in the install guide, I ran into this one nagging pop-up:
Security notice: Unauthorized actions have been detected. Restart your phone to undo any unauthorized changes.
Its a rather annoying notice that keeps popping up. What is the fix for this? Quick 'google' suggested some people uninstalling Knox altogether and it seemed fairly drastic. Suggestions?
