Can I turn my N7 into a remote webcam? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I cracked my screen and it's unsable, but the camera still works and I can still navigate around some with an external mouse. So, I want to turn it into a remote webcam so I can keep an eye on my house and dog while I'm at work. I've seen the apps like IP Webcam, but they seem to only work if both devices are on the same network. I need it to work over the internet. I'd prefer if I could have streaming video, but it would be fine if it simply recorded a video when there's motion.
Can anyone help me out?

MobileWebcam (all one word) on the Play Store sounds like it'll do what you need. I've never used it, but it says it can stream over data or Wifi and gives you the ability to set up your own server to view from any Web browser, with features like motion detection and refresh rate built right in.

WiFi Cameras?

So I've been trying to find a way to address a certain proclivity of mine. I'm trying to find a camera that is self contained wireless and operates on WiFi so that for example I could leave the camera in my car and view it from inside a store on my mogul. The second thing I'd like to learn how to do is to access another camera left at my house over the internet (securely) on my mogul. So any camera/security buffs out there here's your chance to show off.
For streaming video / sound, I use Orb and a Logitech USB webcam (extremely cool.)
I also use Panasonic PLC131's. The mobile interface is static refresh only, but they work great for my needs.
Awesome, Thanks!!

TV streamed to phone?

Hey folks so I am trying to do something that I am not entirely sure I can do. I will try my best to explain it clearly and I hope one of you may be able to direct me in the right direction as I am having little luck on google.
Basically I have IPTV through my phone company. I have the option for a second box and am looking for a way to stream that feed through my computer. From my computer I would like encode the feed into a mobile feesable compression and feed it to my phone through.
Is anyone aware of anything like this that will work or something capable of doing this??
If someone even knows of a service provider that works directly with TV feeds over the internet for mobile I would be even happy with something like that. But of course ideally it would be better to be able to use my own services that I already pay for.
On a last note. My cell phone provider DOES offer tv for mobile but NOT for pdas. LOL and the TV service itself is lousy.
I think the solution is on this web-site orb.com
I'm using it successfuly all the time.
Thanks I am gonna check out that software whenI get home.
On further research while here at work. I came across the Slingbox media option. I was curious if anyone has tried this for there home system yet? The website states that it can be connected to your satellite or digital cable boxes but I have to admit I am confused with the interaction of the two. Mainly the remote control portion.
If you have a Sling box which is acting like a "tv" but actually defering that signal to a remote location like a laptop or phone how does this box change the channel if it's just receiving signal? Does the slingbox itself act like a uber remote control and has to be placed directly infront of the digital box to act like a remote to relay the information back to the remote device?
I apologize if this seems on the border of being off topic but the goal is to stream live TV to my PDA which I suspect one of you techy people may have tryed such a solution!
I have used the Slingbox mobile player extensively with my Mogul over the Sprint EVDO network...I LOVE IT!!! Occasionally it's a memory hog and I may have to reset the phone...but all in all the Slingbox will do what you are asking about.
I have loaded and been running orb now for the past week and have to admit I am extremely happy with this application. It is fantastic so far and the intereface is great and easy to use!!
However after continuing research I will definetly be investing into a sling box as I have a second digital box collecting dust and would love to be able to channel surf lol!! Will just have to run both I suppose. Orb for movies and audio and Slingbox for tv surfing!!
Thank you for your input everyone!

The Sling hardware has an IR transmitter dongle, (or two), that you point at the decoder boxes IR reciever. The Sling client app, (both mobile and PC), have a software controller counterpart that can even actually looks like the remote control, (PC version). All IR functions work great from the mobile and the PC clients!
I love the slingbox and use it fine on my titan, although have had issues on other HTC Smartphones. It basically captures any video signal and sends it over the internet for remote viewing. whbell is right, it has a IR blaster that you put on the front of the device you want to control remotely and it sends your remote control codes to the box. You don't need a seperate set top box as long as the people at home are ok with watching whatever you are watching. I have mine hooked up to my pvr and can pull up all my recorded movies, or more importantly, setup a recording remotely if I forgot to do it at home.
Definitely a must have.

ORB is great for TV, just install a TV tuner / capture card in your PC. Sling box is okay for people without PC's, but if you already have one setup with ORB, there is no need for Sling box.
BTW, if you use Windows Media Center, you could also check out WebGuide.

[Q] Use wallmounted N7 as ip cam, but can't make it work w/o displaying cam

Hi,
So, I have wall mounted an original Nexus 7. It have it running some cool wall mount apps, and I am doing some home automation with it. I would love to be able to use the camera on it as a webcam, and I have found a few apps that would let me do it (IP Webcam, IP Camviewer, Wifi Camera). The problem is that when you start those apps, it turns on your tablet camera, and displays it on the screen. IP Webcam is designed to background it. The problem is that when I try to pull it up remotely, the camera only works remotely, if it is being actively displayed on the screen. As soon as I background it, it stops streaming. I was wondering if this is something that is built into the kernel, or the rom, or the device. Does anyone have an suggestions?
Thanks,
Josh

Use S7 Edge as a capture device for youtube videos

What I want to know people is: Is there a way to record my youtube videos with my S7 Edge on a tripod stand and see what I am recording on one of my PC monitors?
Cant find too much on the net about it, but I though if the device was rooted it may then have the ability to record and preview on a monitor at the same time.
Any suggestions?
Use Sideync. All it needs is the phone to be connected to the PC via cable or both devices on the same wifi network. SideSync will pop a window on your PC showing you the phone screen in real time and you can control it on your PC via mouse.

Wouldnt you need screen capturing software to record the sidesync app? Ive never used sidesync since it doesnt run on linux :/
I personally would get an app called IP Webcam which allows you to stream your camera over the network. You can then use your browser to view the video or better still, use VLC to record the stream (see attachment)
I am using old android phones with this app to set up CCTV in my garage. This is on a plot away from the house and uses solar to power the phone and i can get a decent signal from my wifi even 40m away so it works a beauty!

Uses for HD+

My Nook HD+ has been sitting around for years. Lately I've been thinking of resurrecting it for some use. I have two ideas.
1. Mount in kitchen to use as a reference for recipes and Google assistant (voice recognition) to ask it to to convert units (ie oz to g)
or
2. I have two wyzecams stream rstp video. I could devote the tablet to constantly show the streams.
I think #1 should be fine. As for #2, I'm not sure it will be fast enough to stream video, even though it is pretty low bitrate, frame rate.
Has anyone used their Nook HD+ for either of these purposes?
I was thinking similar just recently.
Is there a lightweight distibution (replacing Nook/Android) that would boot directly into a pdf/epub reader application? The tablet is so slow with Android that turning it back into a dedicated ebook reader would be a great use of its decent display.
I have a hd+ with lineageos 14.1+Magisk 25.2 (for root)+Aurora (apk "app store")+F-Droid installed serving as follows. To keep the load on the device low, I skipped GAPPS and chose alternate minimalist apps that work flawlessly without google play services.
1) "MQTT Dash" app to control/monitor all my iot devices integrated with mqtt.
2) "MQTTAlert" app to display notification on specific mqtt topic subscriptions
2) "Onvier" app to view all my rtsp camera streams (720p and 1080p streams as 4k is too much for the HD+ to handle). I would've preferred the "Cams" app from F-Droid but LOS 14.1 API Level is too old for it :-(
3) "Amcrest View Pro" to integrate my front doorbell camera (Amcrest AD110) via ONVIF as this allows me to view / speak /listen through the doorbell camera without internet connection (only local network)
4) "Automation" app from F-Droid (tasker like but lighter) for automation purposes like: If MQTTAlert notification on doorbell press->start the Amcrest View Pro app to show the front door camera.
The tablet is behind my IOT VLan that has no internet access so its completely localized.
Trying to figure out if I can limit the battery charge on the Nook HD+ to 80%. As its always connected to power source, trying to increase the lifespan of the device.
EDIT: Battery Charge Limit (BCL) app is not supported for the nook hd+ unfortunately.
EDIT2: Its not actually 1080p but rather 1280x960 H265 w/ AAC audio @ 25fps.
I'm using tinycam to cycle through RTSP video from two wyze cams (1080p) and I find it can't seem to keep up. It takes forever to load the video and fails to load it half the time. After a while, the app just closes.
I'll have to check out your Onvier app.
I also have it isolated via a separate VLAN with no internet

My mistake - As I set this up a while ago I am using alternate stream and not 1080p for the 2 cameras. However, I just discovered that they are streaming 1280x960 25fps H265 w/ AAC. Surprised that the device and lineage 14.1 handles h265. Tested and not seeing any dropped frames. I've updated my post above
I'm not sure my Wyze v2 supports h264.
Anyways, after running Onvier for a while, I find it doesnt work that great either over the long term. After a few hours it will gradually start failing to connect to the cams. I'll see "no network connection" errors. Then after a while, I don't even see that and it will just instantly fail to connect. I have to force close the app and restart it for it to start working again. Maybe these things just arent designed to run that long. Maybe it has to do with the sequencing between the two. I wish it would just maintain the connection to both and not reconnect everytime. I think this is part of the issue.
I have my server maintain a constant connection to record video and that never drops and has worked for years.

That could be an issue with Onvier app itself (memory leak overtime perhaps) which I have not tested. I can leave the Amcrest View Pro app running all day without the live stream for my doorbell dropping.
