Ok
i am at a loss I have my mates nexus 4 (vanilla no root locked bootloader) just OTA updated to 4.4.2 stuck on Android is upgrading Starting apps two hours on that screen powered down reboot and boot loop from there in
So thinking i could rescue with a little trickery i took it home ...so far i have these results
tried wipe cache and factory reset from Google standard recovery ... nothing
installed CWM wiped everything (cache dalvik system data) .. nothing
gave up flashed factory google image (4.4.2) from bootloader ... same "starting apps" freeze again, reboot to recovery wiped everything then boot looped on trying a reboot
"
flashed factory image 4.4 same results boots once locks on starting apps then bootloop every boot after then
flashed 4.1 factory image (earliest build) ... Success got it to load everything working .. yay
OTA update came through to i think 4.1.3 that worked
OTA for 4.2.2 just installed and back to Android is upgrading "starting apps" and frozen there now for half hour
this is a clean install every inch of the phone has been completely reset no apps other than factory google apps are installed can someone PLEASE give me some advice im at a loss.

Hello, I have just about the same problem as you do/did I haven't figured a way to fiz it. Any ideas?
I've got the exact same problem. Used the factory image to flash lollipop on my friend's Nexus 4 and it worked flawlessly. Next day he comes to me and says it froze and he force restarted and it wouldn't boot. Tried flashing the factory image again, tried flashing a several custom roms through twrp, and nothing will fully boot it will either loop or get stuck on starting apps. The only thing that has booted so far is the 4.1 factory image. Any ideas?

I hope this is the right forum.
I have rooted my Nexus 4 and installed CWM recovery (6.0.1.9). All was fine so far (about two weeks).
Today I tried to install "Delayed Lock" and "/system/app mover", because Delayed Lock was supposed to be installed as a system app.
I did as I was told in the install instructions, moved the app to the system/app-folder and restarted my phone.
That's when I got stuck at the X while booting.
So after about 10minutes I restarted into recovery and wiped the cache and dalvik cache. I rebooted, but was still stuck at the X.
At last I did a factory reset, but still the same, the X is flashing and nothing happens (except the phone getting a bit warm).
Any ideas?
Flash your ROM again and wipe /system before.
There was no need to wipe /data
I was on stock.
I flashed a recovery image.
Either I'm too impatient (after now 15 minutes) or nothing changed. There was no problem during the flash but after the reboot the X is still flashing happily and nothing happens....

You need to flash a rom, any rom will do, no need to wait 15 min, let alone 5 mins... You can try going into Fastboot and flashing it that way using the Nexus toolkit
Thanks up and running again, the Toolkit helped. If I only knew what I did wrong in the first place.
Ok do I did search first but can't find anyone with the same problem.
Started with stock 4.3 rooted, unlocked,TWRP.
Got the update notification, told it to update. It auto rebooted to TWRP and applied the update with no error. When it was done (assuming it was done progress bar finished) it went to the main TWRP menu. I told it to reboot and it just sits at the new 4.3 splash screen animation. I assumed it may take a bit so I let it sit for about 20min with no change. Rebooted it a couple times, also tried applying the update again via twrp (errors out as i woukd expect). Wiped dalvik and cache. Didn't do a factory wipe because I'd like to avoid that but still no change.
Any suggestions? Should I manually load the full 4.4 package via TWRP?
Thanks!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
Same exact setup... Say exact issue... Oh and before rebooting I wiped Dalvik and Cache as "Sandard Operating Proceedure" ... I'm going to just do a clean flash at this point....

Prior to the installation of the OTA it is safer to re-install stock recovery. Root is lost but re-installing a custom recovery and SuperSu bring back root.

How can i install stock recovery?
You *could* unzip the factory image and then fastboot the recovery.img file. A lot easier is to download the wugfresh nexus root toolkit and use that:
http://www.wugfresh.com/
ty, but do u think it works, because i cant open my nexus 10 memory from the pc, since it is stuck at start up
Wug's toolkit has an option to restore to stock from a bricked system. All you need to be able to do is to get to the bootloader (press the power button while holding down both volume buttons -- you should get a dead android with a red triangle on chest).
I purchased an 8 GB N4 off Craigslist tonight. it had an AOSP verison of Lolipop per the previous owner. it worked and I could sign in etc.. I came home and wanted to clean it myself and reinstall a factory image.
I used wugfresh tool kit and flashstock unroot option and chose 5.01. it downloaded the file, flashed it and that went fine. device rebooted and I saw the Lollipop boot animation but that was it.
I let it sit for 30 min but no change. I forced reboot but when I go to the android factory recovery it says:
E:\failed to mount /cache and it repeats that several times.
i tried factory reset and cache and finally that goes away but still it will not boot.
I flashed 4.4 factory image and that worked fine but I am unable to flash 5.0 or 5.01 at all even after flashing 4.4 successfully.
is this a known issue or am I doing something wrong?

this thread might help you, if you have not seen it already (you dont need to install the drivers)

I downloaded the m-kernel zip a75 (lollipop 5.1.1) and flashed it through cwm. It reported a successful flash. I rebooted and it went to the google screen, then the boot screen, and then.......... the horrid optimizing apps screen! So, I waited for the apps to be optimized, and then it reported starting apps. The window closed and I expected it to boot but up but instead met by a brief NFC thing failure message and the device went back to the bootscreen and started doing everything over and over again. Please help! I really don't want to reset my device! Why isn't it working and what should I do?
youre beat. i did the same thing. the kernel does not work with 5.1.1 so unless you TOOK A BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING there is nothing you can do but reset.
you can try reflashing the rom without wiping the data partition, or restoring only the BOOT partition from backup. it will work, thats what i did until they get the kernel situation figured out. youre not the first to encounter this.
My friend gave me his Nexus 4 to fix, for some unknown reason it does not boot. It earlier worked fine and was running Stock 5.1.
So I tried to fix it by loading the latest Factory Image from Google's website. I downloaded the latest build. extracted it, and followed the instructions given on their website. I was able to successfully install the OS by using the Flash-All script. The phone rebooted once the flashing process got over.
But the phone never booted, it got stuck on the circles flying around boot animation. I did the entire process again and waited for 45 minutes but it still did not boot. I went in the Stock Recovery and wiped the Cache and did a factory reset and still the same. I even tried locking and unlocking the bootloader again but still no result.
After doing all this I decided to install CyanogenMod 12.1 Snapshot, so I downloaded the latest version of TWRP and installed it. Booted into TWRP.
Wiped Dalvik, Cache, Data and System. Flashed the ROM, the ROM installed successfully. But now even CM12.1 won't boot!
How am I supposed to make this phone boot?
Please help me.
Thanks in Advanced.

Hey I fixed it! It finally booted up.
You need to use the first Factory Image, that is, the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean Factory Image.
Once you have flashed the image, the phone will boot up quickly - Mine booted in around 5 minutes I guess.
