So I have a System Update waiting. I'm rooted and stock rom. I have titanium backup and froze various apps. I have stock recovery.
I will lose root by installing this right? Will all my apps be defrosted with this update? Should I defrost them myself before updating?
Anything else I should do before taking this update? A little nervous about it.
Thanks

So confusing. I can't get a solid answer.
I'm even considering flashing the radio/modem to the newest one. But I'd need to install a recovery.

If your stock and just rooted you can flash the ota if you don't have a custom recovery...or if you do have a custom recovery you can flash a stock ROM in Sprint development that has root and ota update included....also comes in odex or deodex...
So I just accepted the OTA. Everything went smoothly. Lost root but quickly rooted again. I'm a happy camper.

I have TWRP on a stock rooted and received that update this morning, it rebooted into recovery and did nothing, and since then I'm stuck in recovery. Nothing works, flashing, recovering, every reboot sends me back into recovery.

Hello!
I had my S4 rooted and nandroid back up. I was trying to install this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2316308
I installed it and gapp installed too and rebooted. I got this message appears
"System software not authorized by AT&T has been found on your phone"
upper corner in orange says "kernel Failed"
That means I did something wrong?
I read about odin. Does Stock rom get you back to fully stock?
Thanks
Did you run loki doki? see.your on at&t..locked bootloader and i dont think that rom is autolokied. Boot back into recovery flash ld.and see if it boots.

Ok, I been reading some threads about recovery, I didn't relieze, i was away from s3 so long. I just restored from backup data and it boots into this stuck Samsung screen with custom unlocked logo. Bootloop?
Havent seen that particular screen but yeah sounds like your bootlooped. If.you can three finger back into recovery and have a nandroid i would full wipe then Restore your back up (even though people.say restoring wipes anyway..id wipe.if u.are using twrp do not format data!).if.your still looped you may have to try and odin back to stock.firmware can be found on sammobile.com had to do this the other night due to a bad nandroid..lots of fun lol.

Thank you!:victory:
My heart dropped like fainting ghost after I see the at&t software showed up. I wiped factory reset and goes past the samsung with unlocked logo into at&t boot up like new phone. It took 5 mins to get into welcome screen. All is working.
Now, I begun to wondering why my logo says it bootloader unlocked and I download correct at&t rom is in? I use this causal download from this link:

I am trying to understand and pick my first rom. Was thinking downloading pure google rom. Had to read again
That mod.will loki your kernel, prolly why it says unlocked. I.have the.canadian. version..unlocked already thank.god lol.
A.simple wipe can work wonders..if you can get into.recovery and have something.to.flash most times your gona be okay.

Flash another kernel made for your device, or go thru the ODIN thing, your choice. this is for anyone who have that triangle.
Yes, I read some thread and the roms need kernel, without kernel installed which was has leaded me into that warning att screen. I tried again with roms above link with ktoon kernel and made it through. I was probably be dumb. Pardon me, lots to relearn here.

This worked for me to unroot.
To unroot, try this. It worked for me. I'm back to "official". However, I've downloaded 4.3 like 5 times already. I can download 100%, but when it reboots to install it stops at 30% then says update failed.

Ok I have my phone working again. I am not on 4.3 but its back to where it was before I started, which is better than nothing. After running Odin once and it failing like it always does (I have never seen it work) I was able to get the holding down volume, home and power button option to work and I just said no and to reboot and it worked. I then went into SuperSU app and unrooted. I will try to update to 4.3 at a later time. I am glad I wasn't the only one having issues. I usually pride myself on knowing technology and being able to figure it out.

I had the same problem. The only way I was finally able to upgrade to 4.3 was to use Odin to revert to stock (unrooted) 4.2.2 MF3 using the files on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502003 Once I did that I ran the OTA update to 4.3 and it worked without any problems.
So if I oden to stock again don't root Then hit the update it should go? Weird thing is I installed my back up today and it a stock backup fresh rich from a oden wipe and it stared DL on its own before I stopped it with killing WiFi. I s this 4.3 update or is it mf3 since I never did that update. ..help. Thanks

Use the link in my previous post (post #13). That has the files and procedures for using Odin to get back to stock 4.2.2 and then you can do the OTA upgrade from there.
First off I apologize if this is in the wrong section or has been asked before, I couldn't really find the answer I'm looking for.
So I have my S4 (4.2.2 if it matters) rooted and TWRP recovery loaded on it. I was getting the ATT update message and I kept hitting ignore or remind me latter, however I noticed last night it starts to try to install and restart without giving me an option to cancel it. I quickly remove the battery to prevent my phone from updating.
My question is, how do I stop this update when I turn my phone back on? I don't want it to update the firmware and lock my boot loader. Or am I making a big deal over nothing?
Thanks in advance

Thanks so much.
Just one more think, I just want to make sure that when I turn my phone back on that the update won't finish installing (it was in the process of installing when I shut it off).
Thanks again for all the help.
I'm assuming that u have MDB/MDL firmware. ......Take your Att sim card out. ... u need to root your phone. ... install Titanium back up and go to Att software update app ....back up first just incase u need it to return to att and then uninstall it...... that's should stop it from OTA update
SWYPED_FROM_S4_MF3_REDVENOM
Yep, you're going to want to root and then rename or freeze those files, you found in the Google search. That will stop the update
Taking just the SIM out at this point won't help. Only way to completely stop it now since it was installing is to Odin back to MDL and start the root process.

So not to keep asking the same question, when the sim card is out of the phone, will that prevent the update from installing?
Also to clarify, I've already rooted my phone and installed TWRP recovery. Again at this point I just want to make sure that when I turn my phone on the update isn't going to automatically finish installing before I can block the app/files
Again, thanks so much for the help, can't wait to get a rom installed and start enjoying the awesomeness
I'd follow graydiggy suggestion. Don't turn it on except to go into download mode. Flash the mdl firmware, then root again and freeze the update apps or install a custom Rom
I could be wrong but I believe the update won't apply since the stock recovery has been replaced with a custom recovery . If I am wrong Im sure somone will come in and correct this statement .

Won't matter
If you have a custom recovery, the update should fail the install with an error 7. However, I would still completely start from scratch by using Odin to get a clean slate without an update. You could actually use Kies and do the emergency restore. Whatever you do, do not boot the phone into the OS until it has been completely wiped by either Odin or Kies. Only download mode.

boot into recovery and in twrp manually go erase the update.zip from cache/fota. Then wipe cache before rebooting. That, or flash the PIT file. I posted directions on how to extract the stock signed PIT file but you'll probably need someone to extract one for you since you dont want to boot to Android yet.

Hi all!
Rogers has just released KK update.
Since there's no root method as of now for 4.4, I decided to root my phone this morning prior to performing the update.
My question:
Do I also need to install a custom recovery (TWRP) BEFORE upgrading to 4.4 if I want to keep root access?
Is it sufficient to be rooted (without custom recovery) in order to keep root access after 4.4 update?
I already downloaded the update to my phone but opted to install the update later.
So I'm hoping this way, I won't have any issues with the phone not wanting to download the update because of a not stock recovery detected.
Thanks in advance!

The upgrade erases the whole phone, so you can't keep root access. There's no root yet for KK on g2.

I upgraded my G2 on Rogers today and lost root, however there is at least one person who did it while keeping root, check this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51363510, for more info. From what we can see he did a factory reset and uncheck the enable superuser box in SuperSU, whereas I did not do either of those things. The Update DOES NOT wipe the phone if you do it via OTA, I believe it might if you install it via the KDZ.
Yes and if you have su pro you can also try survival mode and if you want to take ota you cannot have custom recovery

Powering off and on, rebooting I always ended up at twrp. I used the terminal line and followed from some other post and got my phone back up. Now not sure how to proceed to install the update. So sticking to 4.2.2 for now. Anyone have any clues or should I do a stock recovery or would hard factory reset help?

Bell D803 Root, FOTA, Fun
Just the other day, I decided to root my LG G2 (Bell D803), and found a TWRP Recovery that installed properly (was warned in several locations NOT to use a D802 recovery or ROMs!). Got myself rooted using ioroot (lovely tool), nice new recovery, then found no ROMs really ready for use on the D803 (although I hear some folks have been able to get D802 ROMs working with effort). Barely had time to start exploring my further options when the FOTA update appeared. Not thinking, I grabbed it immediately!
And then the phone went into a boot loop -- Recovery was my only option. Tried looking around within Recovery for any sign of the FOTA update files but later found it goes to a partition. Apparently wiping this partition brings the phone back to a usable state.
adb shell
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota of=/sdcard/fota-backup.img
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
Once back in usable mode (still with root at this point, but no shiny new KitKat), I did some digging to try figure out how to get rid of my new Recovery so I can get the update. The shortest possible path I found: the LG Mobile Support Tool. I ran it, it said there was an update. Downloaded the update and all was good -- aside for remnants of root being left over (just needed to uninstall Superuser app; wasn't working at this point anyway).
So for now, I'm rootless but fully updated.

So for now, I'm rootless but fully updated.

Yes. Just doing the update it offered restored my Recovery back to stock and upgraded stock ROM. No wipe necessary and only thing lost was root. There was a brief warning that updates are not available on rooted setups, but I haven't seen that again after the initial boot. I suspect removing Superuser solved this but I'll keep you posted.

Thanks a bunch Psquiddy. It worked like a charm. I lost root but no big deal since I was done with flashing.

Downloaded the 1.5gig file and install took about an hour. Rebooted, checked out the software version and it was 4.4.2
Maybe once root can be acquired I'll root it again simply to get rid of the bloatware.
Enjoy

Use the LG Mobile Support tool, change country to Canada. It Will tell you there is an update for your phone. It will analyze your phone and proceed with the download. Just sit back and let it do it's thing. It will update your phone and remove root and custom recovery if you have one installed. Hope this helps

I'm on 4.2.2 with TWRP right now but just about to update OTA. I'll give this a try once on 4.4.2 and post my results.
Verizon keeps trying to push the OTA 4.4.2 update. I've been doing "install later" but now I'm ready to go ahead and pull the trigger on 4.4.2.
1. I am rooted
2. I do NOT have a custom bootloader (TWRP or CWM)
3. I do NOT have a custom ROM.
So, in order to OTA update do I simply have to un-root? If so, with the Full Unroot in SuperSU do the trick or do I need to go through the steps set up here to go back to stock?
Thank you in advance for any advice on the matter.

If you are rooted you can take ota, as long as you meet the requirements which are don't have custom recovery(twrp/philz/cwm),everything is stock, don't have xposed and have not removed bloat also to answer your question a full unroot from su should work no problem

Tried while rooted. The phone rebooted and the installer started, showing 0%, then threw an error (it went away before I could see it...something like 0x1111004?)
Did SuperSU Full Unroot. Rebooted. Tried install again and got the same results.
I'm going to try a full factory reset and see if it helps.
Well, crap!
So resetting the phone didn't help. I forgot that I mobile hotspot mod so I tried to back that out by installing the stock hotspot apk and odex.
Now, when I try to do a software update I get "unfortunately, software update has stopped". Tried force close and clear cache but no luck. Tried wiping phone again, no luck. Any ideas?
I have a boot issue on my Verizon G2. I'm on 11A stock, rooted and hotspot altered. I also have OTA updates blocked for months by titanium. Was going to undo wifi and unroot and factory reset to see if that helped my boot issue. But I hate to have mine error like yours since mine still functions. Gonna watch this thread and hope you get yours fixed. good luck
While trying to remove the hotspot mod i removed the mobile update apk. What a moron. Anyway, thank god i had a backup.
I'm back to square one. Can't ota update. It fails with 0x1111004. I'm going to look into disabling the daily push of the update and/or some other method of installing Kitkat.
