Two S4's both wont charge. - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hi everyone. Hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. I have two Sprint Galaxy S4 and recently they will sometimes take a charge and other times they won't. They're on TriForce rom 3.1. I have tried multiple chargers and an extra battery I have lying around. I'm not sure if maybe the rom is corrupted and need to do a full wipe.
The strange part is it will show it's taking a charge, but it's not charging. It's happening on both phones. I remember someone had said you might have to calibrate the battery. Not sure if it could also be a Kernel issue. I don't have internet at the moment do download a stock tar. Any ideas will be helpfull. Thanks in advance.

just as some more info on calibrating the battery. that does nothing and is a false act. calibrating the battery just deletes some file that is deleted every time you fully charge.

The fact you have tried multiple chargers and a different battery shows the problem is not with the battery or the charger. The Micro-USB port on the S4 gets damaged very easily. It is quite simple to replace it. The assembly will cost you about $10. Make sure you buy the charging port assembly for this model. The ones for AT&T and T-Mobile use a different assembly.

[Q] HTC HD2 Won't Turn On Or Charge!

My HD2 recently froze, so i decided to pull out the battery, and now it wont turn back on
This is after i upgraded to Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread
How can i fix this?
More info would be really helpful. when did it freeze, during boot, after boot..did it ever boot up correctly and get pass the setup? are you using clk or magldr? can you link to which gingerbread ROM you used? sorry for all the questions but without some more accurate info we would only be taking an educated guess.
So my guess would be that it might just be coininsidense it froze and really the battery is just dead. Magldr does not charge when the phone is turned off so try and get a spare battery if you can to test it out. You might have some luck going into T-mobile and asking them about it only because they might be able to grab a battery out the back to test it for you. If your not using magldr other issues could be a bad download or you flashed the wrong ROM.
I use magldr and i had this problem once, infact it took me several days to get it up and running again. If you do find out its this which hopefully its all it is you can get a spare off ebay rather cheap. I bought three spare batteries plus a wall charger for them for around $10 or so...maybe $15.
Sounds like bent battery pins, which can happen when doing battery pulls.
Take out your battery again and look at the 3 pins that stick out and make sure none are bent and all connect to the battery.
Try this... Pull the battery, plug the phone into the charger, then while plugged in, insert the batter back into the phone.
The same thing just happened to my HD2. It froze so I pulled the battery out and now it wont turn on. The only difference with mine is that I was running stock software. I had not done any tinkering with it at all such as flashing ROMs to it and whatnot. Is it completely dead or could it just be a battery issue?

Battery might be fubar, I'd try another one.
To me it sounds like the battery pins if it wasn't for he said it froze, there is no description of when it froze but that it happened after he flashed a new ROM. If it was working fine for several hours and he hadn't pulled the battery out in that time then I would think its something else since it was working at one point. With out a little more info though we are just taking an educated guess...one of many things that could have happened.

[Q] [HELP] Weird battery problem (drain, restart...)

I seem to be experiencing some weird problem with the battery on my I9500.
I only get about 12 hours battery life with minimal usage and can drain the battery completely within 3 hours or less if I keep the screen on which is much less than what it should be. When the battery reaches <10% the phone sometimes suddenly drops to 0% and switches off. This happened last night and I charged for about 1 minute, switched it on and it showed 50% again and lasted another 1.5 hours. The actual battery has an ever so slight bulge (not even 1mm but you can notice when putting it flat on the table).
I flashed the phone with OMEGA and Adam kernel about 3 weeks ago, the problems started about 1.5 weeks ago. Thus not sure if there might be a problem with the kernel or ROM causing this.
Any ideas what may be causing this? Defect battery or device or may a reflash help? Also anything I can do with resetting battery stats?
Any help would be appreciated!!!
It seems like a faulty battery, which is quite common for Samsung phones. You should ask for a replacement. Not Omega ROM issue.
Knowing the service centres this will probably mean sending in the device for a few weeks which is not an option with the counter and no way to reset this yet on the I9500... May have to just buy a new battery then. Any other ways of testing?
Have you tried flashing your device back to Samsung stock ROM? If the problem still persist, it is not a custom ROM/kernel issue then.

Still have to... Will try that as soon as I have time.
How do everyone else's batteries look? 100% flat or the tiniest of bulges (and I really mean tiny...)?

Hi, look at this thread and read my last reply http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397950
I've found 5 threads with this problem, probably faulty motherboard and all of these people had Omega rom including me. But if Omega rom broke motherboard a lot more people would have this problem...so just a coincidence maybe? Also all these threads are not older than one month. I suppose that the only solution is reclamation.

[Q] Galaxy S4 Battery (I-9500) drains out quickly while playing Candy Crush

Hi,
I saw many folks are facing similar problems, but my problem is little different. Now a days whenever I play Candy Crush my S4's battery drains out very quickly i.e. 60-70% in the span of 5 - 10 minutes, also it gets charged up with equally fast (about 80 % in 10 min). My phone is just 3 months old...earlier there was no such problem. I haven't installed any new apps in between. Is it the problem with the battery or with the handset?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks
The battery drain in almost time cause of software problems
But charging too fast Im saying it could problem with the battery it self
Try to charge your phone with original charger

lennyz1988 I respect you but here i think there is a fault in battery caliberation. Your advice is also true but why not try a factory reset before purchasing a new one?
have you tried looking at your battery on settings ? see if what apps consumes most of your battery

It's because from what I remember, battery callibration is not regulated at rom level. It's a chip inside the battery.
For example:
With the old HTC Desire you could wipe battery stats in the recovery.
For the Samsung Galaxy S2 this didn't have any effect because the chip inside the battery regulated the calibration.
From what I remember it's the same for the S4. If the calibration does not work (eg charging to 100%, taking the battery out, putting it back in, recharge again till 100%) then his battery is faulty. So unless he messed his rom up seriously, no wipe or other rom will help. His OS just reads the data from the chip.

[Q] Battery doesn't fully charge to 100%

I have an L01F, a Japanese G2. The ROM right now is CloudyG2 3.3, with the stock Cloudy kernel. My problem is that the phone seemingly doesn't charge to 100%; it usually stops at 93-98%, but unplugging it and a simple reboot immediately changes the reading to 100%. I dug around, and whenever the phone stops charging at a level below 100%, the voltage reading is at ~4200mV, which is supposed to be 100%. I've done battery calibration numerous times already, and nothing seems to work. The problem first started showing when I installed KK Dorimanx kernel when I was still using CloudyG2 2.2 (KK). I've moved on to CloudyG2 3.3 (LP) with proper wipes, but to no avail. Anyone have any idea what's going on?
EDIT: the battery voltage hovers at around 4330mV when it stops charging below 100%
Seems like battery controller problem?..
Would that mean I have to replace the battery to fix this?
I don't think that you should do that.
For example my Mac shows 99% max, and wife's older one shows 93% max.
Just an update:
I recently found out that, using the hidden menu *#*#4636#*#*, the battery hovers at around 4330mV when it stops charging below 100% (in the past it would stop charging at around 4200mV). I think that this is detrimental for the battery's longevity, and I need to fix this asap. I've tried calibrating the battery again using the appropriate steps, still no luck. Anyone have any idea? Could this be a ROM bug? Kernel?
2 questions. How old is the battery? Have you let it completely drain and recharge?

The battery is around 1.5 years old. And I have done complete discharge and (undisturbed) charge cycles multiple times now. It only gets straight to 100% if I leave it turned off while charging. Else, I would need a reboot to change the reading to 100% after it stops charging.

At that rate I'd look into a replacement battery. Litium cells build internal resistance over discharge cycles.and Given uve done full discharge/charge cycles only getting a full charge when off is a good sign.
If I remember right u said you have a LG G2. It does not have a replaceable battery it is very easy to swap. I can try and do a basic teardown video of a G2 tomorrow at work if you would like.

Not a problem man. I'll dig through the boxes at work tomorrow to build a G2 and tear it down. A new battery should be pretty easy to find on eBay, swappa, or some of the various parts dealers on line for pretty cheap. That used to be one of the biggest problems with g2's aside from broken lcd's

Try draining the phone till it shuts itself off, then charge it to 100% while the phone is still off.
Boot it back up with the power cord still attached.
It should be back to 100%.
If you have the time, a normal discharge refresh is 100%>0%>100%>0%>100%. So 3 cycles.(I do this with my 3000mA LiPo batteries at 1amp and it takes like 15 hours.)
If that doesn't help, you could try to check internal resistance, if it's over 500mili-ohms, it's a bad battery.

Thanks for the tips! And nope, I haven't been able to perform a normal discharge refresh. Unfortunately, I don't have that much time to spare away from my phone. But will definitely try this if I do find the time (before getting a replacement battery, that is).
Are you getting the same results with other roms too? Try Dirty Deeds rom, if you haven't tried it yet.

Unfortunately, it's the same with other compatible roms. AFAIK only a few roms are compatible with L01F (Japanese G2), and Dirty Deeds isn't one of them.
What I haven't tried is flashing the kdz, since I don't have the time to do that, plus I don't like JB (though the stock JB gave me the best battery life by far). Thinking back, this problem might have started when I played around with the charging speed options in the KK Dorimanx kernel back when I was in CloudyG2 2.2.

Sorry it took so long to get this made. finally got a g2 to tear apart. all thats needed is a gituar pick/nails/etc, p00 Philips screwdriver
turn sound off, theres no important audio.
1 remove sim tray
2 pry up the corner and use pick to remove back cover
3 Unscrew top and bottom plastic pieces, remembering where the black screw goes
4 remove associated ribbions and peel buttons back.
5 Pry battery out, Use a little caution here since it is a lithium battery, and you are using the back of the frame and lcd as leverage.
the frame is pretty sturdy. and the battery is taped in pretty good. a little 99% alcohol can help loosen it when the corner is peeled up,
Reinstall is opposite
sorry the video is in 2 parts, and uploaded to mega

Unusable Note 4 Overheating, I think

I have a Note 4 that is stock that started randomly restarting. Then it couldn't even boot all the way up. I noticed it was getting very hot near the sim card. After letting it sit for a day, and cool off, I think. I was able to get into stock recovery and do a factory reset before it froze again. However, it still can't even boot all the way to the welcome screen. I assume it is a hardware issue. Any advice on what to repair/replace to fix this? Is it the motherboard? Thanks.
Hi, you could try to flash the stock ROM of the Android version that you're using. If that doesn't help, it's most likely an hardware issue and you have to send it to Samsung or get it repaired otherwise if possible.
Thanks. I am pretty sure it is the motherboard that has gone bad. It won't stay powered on long enough to flash a rom.

Can you access the download mode of your device long enough? If yes, you could use the software Odin to flash the ROM.
If no, I guess nothing than Samsung itself can help you.
when my note 4 died suddenly during the day- having had issues like freezing, laggin and restarting since MM6.0.1- I thought it was ready for the burial but I read online somewhere- too many google pages LOL- to take the battery out, put it to chill in the fridge for 10 mins (I left mine in for 30), take it out and put the battery back in . Totally resuscitated!
Now using Wakelock app and all is- fingers crossed- well i.e.: no more lagging, freezing etc.
(I somehow could not flash custom firmware using my Mac after 3 tries- )

Thanks for the quick reply, guess i should probably follow up too, i'll try to remove the shorting using Elma's solution and if it doesn't work i'll just throw it out, a new motherboard costs as much as a whole new phone, and yeah your Note 4 was shorted as well, most likely due to a poor quality battery or a bad Charger/USB cable or excessively using it while charging.
