Try wiping data and trying it again.
You could try sideloading the update. This thread has tons of information:

I'm using CleanRom 3.3, last night like others I received the OTA message, I was busy and didn't realise it had automatically downloaded.
I don't want to install it and will wait for custom versions of 4.2.2
My question is how do I stop the OTA from installing, I don't want to reboot my Nexus 7 and have it install itself.
Hopefully I'm not giving you misinformation, but I think there is an OTA update thingy under system/ app that can be disabled.
Hi guys, I just got a tegra note 7. When I booted it up for the first time it said I had an update for 4.3 ota. I am at 4.2.2 currently. When I try to download it, it starts off fine. However, when it gets to 200 mb out of the 398, it says that it is downloaded, checking MD5. After that it says download failed. I've tried a factory reset, a regular reset. I've tried deleting the ota files and clearing the data and cache in the system updates app. Please help me figure out how to update this thing.
My nexus 4 just comes up with an android error screen during installation of the 5.0.1 update . It appears the phone then rolls back the update, reboots and then after a while the OTA notification comes up again and if I try to install it I get the same results? I would happily leave my phone on 5.0.0 but as far as I can see I would need to root to turn of the system updates and the notifications that go with them. I think this is the same complaint here on the google forum but no solutions it seems? https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/svgo7hsNMMQ[101-125-false]
Anyone any ideas? I tried clearing cache from recovery but I can't get into the menu that lets you clear the cache for some reason?
I'm getting the OTA update to Android 5.1, it downloads, asks me to restart, then fails with an error screen and the robot lying on its back. The phone then reboots itself into the 5.0.1 firmware.
The phone is rooted, is anyone else getting the same issue. Are there any logs I can look at to find out why?
Thansk
i have troubles as well. i unrooted, installed stock recovery (via n4 toolkit) and tryed to install. it takes longer then before but i stell get an error. SuperSU is gone in my app drawer.. any other help?

I used the excellent Wug Nexus Toolkit http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
Through there I unrooted. Then applied the new update.

In my case, this did the trick: aaronhastings.me/updating-to-android-5-1-0-on-rooted-nexus-5
I hope it will help you, too.
Regards.
Never rooted, updated perfect to 7.0. Now it says update available to 7.1.1 Every time I download it then choose restart and install it blinks, doesn't restart and says I'm up to date. check again, downloads and yep same think.
Any ideas?

Try clearing the system cache and then do the update again. If that doesn't work you might need to do a full factory data reset of your phone.
