Best ROM for Giving Nexus 7 to Son - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I finally got a 2013 version of Nexus 7. Night and day. Exponentially smoother and the crispness of the graphics blows 2012 away.... And I'm on stock!
I'm giving my 2012 Nexus 7 to my 6 year old for Christmas. I'm looking for the smoothest, most reliable ROM.... I don't care if it's 4.3 or even 4.2.2. I've been running 4.4.2, but I find it laggy and altogether not a great user experience.
My other question is, what sort of parental controls can I install on this thing? Is there an app I can install that limits what her can do?
Thanks.

Solid and Fast Rom?

What is the ROM with the best balance of stability and speed. Want a fast ROM,but still needs to be my daily driver.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I've been hearing wonders of the bugless beast, I'll flash it and get back to you on that. Aside from that, I tried glazed jb,, that was quite smooth and stable, and most of the cm10 ROMs are almost, if not over capable of being a daily driver IMHO. If you truly want speed, look at the motely, faux, and trinity kernels, I've also been hearing great things, I can testify on the motely kernels speed.

How's motley with glazed ROM...I currently running glazed 1.1.2.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Back to you, the bugless beast is super stable.
And the motely kernel should work brilliantly with it, but be warned - the higher GPU over clock, the more battery drain
Edit: the glazed jb ROM already uses the motely kernel, but if you want more battery life, flashing the kernel without the GPU of would boost your battery life

Any recommended jb rom?

title says all.
but I'm looking for simple fast, reliability and high battery life, I'm not a user who needs lots of features. =]

Stability and performance - JellyBelly, about battery, I can't say, and if my phone can survive from morning til night, it's good enough for me....
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
if u looking for something really stable, fast and smooth, try Jelly Belly 1.5.1
been running it sine release and never had an issue with it, plus u will get toggles, hold back to kill, volume rocker....
fully charge battery is giving me around 4hrs of screen on with constant use of 3g.
rom has no support any more.

SlimBean
Dude... I cant believe I actually need to say this... but apparently I do.
THE best rom out there is: SlimBean.
Krarvind is simplyl a genius. He stripped everything out, all the bloated crap, and left a really good rom.
Battery life is insane. I leave my wifi, 3g, blue tooth, everything I can open and chowing battery, and I only need to charge my phone 2-3 times a week.
I have been using slim roms since my college at work told me about it when ics came out, and as my friend Ori, likes to put it, its pure awesome sauce.
And now with the jb update, it really is as smooth as butter and runs incredibly.
I was considering getting an upgrade on my phone to the galaxy nexus, but with slim rom it would simply be pointless.
I would deff say my phones overall speed has increased x2 with SlimBean.
Its still in early stages granted, he just released it last week I think, so he doesnt have all the normal features, but it will come.
Seriously, if you are looking for the best rom for nexus s, look no further:

I second that, with latest thalamus kernel it's perfect for me
Maybe a bit off topic here but if you are gaming a lot, stay away from any JB rom atm.

I got to say, have a go with CM10 Euroskank, sorry I am new here so can't post links but it's in Dev section.
The OP said he doesn't need many features, so in general I agree with Slim Bean BUT .... the ROM I mentioned is so smooth and is continually updated as CM10 evolves. Plus I reckon the features will prove to be handy. Who doesn't like to customise their device eh?

Good ROM and/or kernel close to 4.2.1 jelly bean on N7

I currently am running android 4.1.2 and everything is factory stock on my 32 GB N7. I want to use 4.2.1 but do not want the battery died ain and charging issues. I wondering if there are any good ROMs and/or kernels to use that would be similar to the stock 4.2.1 but without the battery drain and charging issues. Any suggestions would be great.

I'm currently using Paranoid Android b9 with m-kernel a25. Right now I can get two full days out of it if I forget to plug it in at night. There are still a few bugs, but the customizability makes it worth it to me.
I was using SmoothROM before, which ran great. If you're looking for something closer to stock, you might take a look at that one.

Rasbean with trinity is a good near stock experience with minor useful mods. As for not wanting to use stock 4.2.1 due to battery issues, I wouldn't worry about it. I ran complete stock unrooted 4.2.1 since I got my 32GB 7 (mid November) until yesterday when I finally rooted and flashed rasbean, and had excellent battery life.
As for charging, people been complaining about it being slow since before 4.2. Mine doesn't take any longer than my g'nex even with 3 times the battery.

+1 for Rasbeanjelly and Trinity..

rasbean with trinity. close to stock, but better :victory:
I'm on CM10.1 nightly and it has been smooth so far. It feels almost the same as stock, with some great perks.

Best rom for battery life ?

Which one is better ?
Nexus 4 cihazımdan Tapatalk 2 ile gönderildi
There is no real answer for this. Everybody has different results. For better battery focus more on the kernel. Try one for a few days, then another and compare performance. Keep going until you find what best fits your needs. Remember there is no overall best, but rather best for you.

Kernel, is more important for battery life, than just the ROM, plus your settings and apps make a huge difference too.

I've tried CM, Minco, Xylon, PA, the best I get is CM with franco kernel of course.

Official nightly usually is more cutting edge, but the M builds are more stable and would probably have better battery life.
Third Party Cyanogenmod, like SlimBean will most likely have lower battery life due to adding additional features, but like the other individuals said the kernel is more important than the ROM itself. A ROM can only be as efficient as the kernel itself.

Nexus 4 , then and now

I owned a nexus 4 when it was launched.
Kept it for a while but sold it because of the poor (at the time) battery times with stock 4.2.
My question is if anything has changed since then in terms of battery and/or performance with the latest kit kat 4.2
Can battery runtimes get any better with custom roms ? Stable one at least...
Thanks in advance.

Well, everything has changed. There are a variety of kernels that greatly improve battery life..so I don't see any consequences to sell N4 just because of that
