Screen does not wake with SMS in Hangouts. Fix? - Galaxy S III General

So, I really like that Hangouts now handles text msgs. It's much cleaner than the stock app, and more 3rd party apps, IMO. I only have 2 gripes, and I'm curious if there is a way around these?
(Before we delve into this, let me just stop all the "use ChompSMS" comments. I want to use Hangouts if this is possible. I've used many 3rd party apps, I prefer HO's.)
Issue 1: In the sock app, if your text/reply goes over 'X' number of characters (140 maybe?), it will let you keep typing your book of a text, then break it into parts 1, 2, 3, etc once it is sent. That's great. In Hangouts, once you reach the character limit for SMS, it just stops typing, or worse, it overwrites previous characters. I'm not seeing a way around this in the settings. Anybody know of a fix?
Issue 2: This is the worst of the two IMO. The stock SMS app would wake the screen for like 30 seconds when I got a text, and since my phone is on silent or vibrate at work, I came to rely on seeing this out of the corner of my eye as a sort of notification. Hangouts does not do this and there is no option in the settings to enable it. I have set up a Tasker profile (my first one!, even though I've owned the app for many years) to wake the screen when I get any text. So far, it seems to be working. However, I am wondering if there is a direct plugin, or in-app fix for this, rather than relying on Tasker to handle it?
Thoughts, anyone?

Try the dynamic notifications app from the store. That'll wake the device for you when you get a message.
The limit thing could probably be changed with hacks but i think that would be the a PITA. Best wait for Google to fix it up.

2 Annoyances, looking for solutions

I apologize if this has already been covered. If it has, I wasn't able to find it.
1)
After a call, when I pull the phone away, the notification bar gets stuck "slightly" pulled down and touches to the screen are unresponsive. I have to pull the notification bar down all the way, then put it back up to make it go away. Otherwise, the bar just stays at about a half inch (or less) from the top of the screen. I'm using the SuperDark rom, but I don't think it's an issue with that since I remember the same thing happening with one of the first calls I made on the phone. It seems to happen about 1 out of 4 calls I make. I'm pretty used to it now and I usually just end the call using the notification bar when it happens, but I wanted to know if anyone is experiencing this and how it can be avoided/fixed.
2)
Animated GIFs. I saw the post of annoyances saying how the browser doesn't support them. But I couldn't find anything about the Gallery app not supporting them, either. I can deal with the browser, but I use Chandroid for 4chan and such, and it would be nice to view the animated GIFs I save from Chandroid in the Gallery. Is there a fix for this? Or possibly an alternate Gallery app I can use?
Thanks in advance
1. Don't press phone against ear until the proximity sensor turns the backlight off.
2. Don't have a specific answer. But I bet 2.2 wouldn't hurt.
good day
Looks like there was a discussion about the gif thing back in April.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=660914
I have seen conflicting information about this, though, on the web. I have a phone with 2.2 at home, so I will give it a test tonight and let you know, unless someone replies sooner.

[Q] Text messages not lighting up lock screen?

So I just got an S4 on Friday, and I've been customizing things and playing with it all weekend. I haven't done any changing of the software like I usually come to xda to do, just played with the stock everything.
When I get a text, my phone doesn't light up, only the little LED does (I've seen the option to turn the LED on/off for notifications) and then when I turn the screen on manually by hitting the power button, I have to click the text message, THEN pick my finger up, go towards the bottom of the screen, and swipe it there? It's a total of 3 gestures (click, click, swipe) to open my phone to a recent text IF I hear my notification. Most of the time I'm gaming and have headphones on, or am watching TV or something and see the screen light up on my phone and go straight to the text.
My S2 I had last week showed up a little envelope that I swiped and it went straight to the new text message I received. This was after the screen lit up upon arrival of the message initially. This took 1 gesture of effort on my part to open a text.
Has anyone else experienced/noticed this, and if so, does anyone know how to fix this? If I'm not being clear enough please let me know. Thanks in advance guys.
that's generally the way all android phones work.
if you want to, download handcent and use that for your texting. you can enable the popup and customize how long it opens the screen for i.e. 5 sec 10 sec or 20 sec

I'll take your word for it, it's just that I've owned 2 android phones and 50% of them worked right and 50% of them are being obnoxious just to open a text. My phone lights up when someone calls, why wouldn't it light up when I get a text, like every other phone I've ever owned? I just feel really bummed about my purchase. Texting is 75% of what I use my phone for, and it's annoying as hell on this one. I'll check out handcent though, I really appreciate the suggestion. Thanks
**edit**
If there's a way to just get stock to work right, I'd most definitely prefer that. If I HAVE to use some 3rd party app to text, I guess I'll settle for that.

Mate you're lucky. I hate my screen lighting up when I receive a text! So much so I installed a mod on my S3 to disable it.
But my S4 on stock ROM lights the screen up whenever I get a text.
I would suggest you to do a factory reset, that should sort it hopefully.

Additional app support for QuickWindow?

Loving the QuickWindow feature of this phone, but disappointed by the small number of apps that support it and the limited functionality of it. The Galaxy S4 version allows for complete reading of incoming text messages as well as their dismissal. And also to visibility of who your missed calls are from too I think..
It would be great for Google Play Music to be supported also.
So I guess this is a request for development along those lines... Thanks!
When you receive a SMS/MMS, a pop-up window should appear with the contents of the text and allow you to respond to it or dismiss it. It doesn't need to be in QSlide AZ it already has the functionality to show up above the window you are currently on. The same goes for incoming calls. A small rectangular window should appear over whatever you're doing with an answer, ignore, or text option. These two features are awesome, especially if you play games a lot. Instead of an incoming call switching you out of (and potentially closing it depending on the game) the game, you can control it from the pop-up. The Verizon version doesn't support as many applications though, so I know what you're saying.

What does any of that have to do with QuickWindow widget availability?

[Q] voice to text and other woes

I imagine that this, like my other problems with my n4, is likely to be the result of my tinkering more than the phone itself... But seeing as I'm not terribly skilled, and I don't as much time as I'd like to fiddle around with my phone... I'm reaching out to the hive mind.
One of the problems thats annoying me the most right now is the voice to text button on the google keyboard. Namely it isn't doing anything. No error message, no change to the helpful microphone shaped circular button waiting to convert my dulcet tones into words... nothing.
To be honest I'm not entirely sure when this began, because its not a feature that I used frequently, unless alone in my car at a stoplight or something and I want to slam out a quick text. The mic still works fine, and gNow has no problem triggering and responding to me - it just seems as though the action is never triggered by the button.
I'm currently running KK, bootloader unlocked, rooted, xposed framework, gravity box, and a few other smaller modules (dictionary blacklist for example). Minimal rooted applications such as titanium and tasker, but nothing fancy is being done with them (didn't deepfreeze any system apps or set up any related tasks). The keyboard app is the google one with only small tweaks that are built in like the blue trail and shorter longpress time. I have offline voice to text set up, and this issue is present on wifi or network regardless.
Any tips? has anyone had this problem before? can anyone point me to a potential culprit or a way of finding one?

Custom Text Tones After Oreo Update

Hi All,
Ever since I got the Oreo update on my S8 a couple of days back, I am not able to set custom text tones for individual contacts.
This was available, and extremely useful, on Android 7. Does anyone know how to enable this? I'm on Stock ROM. No Root, nothing customised.
Thanks.
I was on the beta and rely on this a lot as I have dual sim for work and home so it's a must for me to have different tones per contact, however, during the beta Samsung removed it and I raised it as an issue. Every beta update that came out I kept raising it as an issue, at one point I got a bit irate and they actually replied saying the beta wasn't over yet and new features are always being added. Anyway, final Beta came out and still no custom tones per contact, so I have ended up installing the google messenger app that does allow you to do this (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging). However, the settings are configured within the messenger app and not stored against the contact like they were previously.
I upgraded from the Note 8 to GS9+ and lost ability to assign contact specific text notification sounds. This is a downgrade since many people found this feature useful prior to Oreo. I too installed Android Messages just to restore this feature. This needs to be fixed to work with the phone's default messaging app instead of forcing people to download additional apps to get this feature. Big mistake on Oreo developers part.
Samsung (or Google...or whomever), I just want you to know how unhappy I am with this so called Oreo update! Really?? You take away the text tone notifications?? That really sucks! Now I am being forced to download a 3rd party app (which you guys won't support) in order to get that feature back?!?!?! This is a BIG disappointment. I feel that I have been let down! You guys could have kept all the features like GIF and all of the other things you added. They are not half as important to me as the individual text tones were! SMH! I may have to switch over to iPhone. Yes! That's how upset I am about this!
I switched from iPhone to android for all the bonuses. This feature is one I have always used and now it's been taken away??? Back to iPhone I go.
GARBAGE!!
This is absolute CRAP!!! I got the update late last night on my GS8+ and realized immediately this morning with my 1st text that something had changed. Started digging and discovered the feature was gone...IRATE doesn't even begin to describe how I feel about this!! The feature NEEDS to be readded!!!!
So glad I found these posts! I have digged through my phone for a week now after the update trying to find how to change the tones for my important contacts! So annoyed I cant change this! Why would they do that!!! I don't care about updated emojis, I have had the same text tone for my finance for 2 years and now it's a default tone! So now I have to look at my phone every time, instead of knowing exactly who is messaging me !! Annoyed
I fail to understand the horror you are all expressing. Now is the perfect time for you to check out Textra. Forget the stock messaging app, you can not only customize your tones, but also color of notification icons, colors in chats, background images, type of notifications {heads up, floating, normal, etc.}. The advantages are numerous. Besides, isn't this the exact reason most of us use Android? If you don't like a stock app, there are enough options to replace it, you find something better.

I downloaded Textra and do not see an option that fixes the problem. I find this a big step back as I used the feature to make it easy to identify if my wife or kids were texting me.

Thanks got it. Liking the ability to customize a lot wth this. It is a shame it won't let you pick a custom background but it is making it easy to tell at a glance who I am chatting with.

You can set custom bubble colors, if that helps. I never even used the stock messaging app. I like using custom notification colors with custom led colors and sounds, so I know even when my phone is muted and the screen off.
Another option is to download a soundboard, I have an samsung s8 and I updated to oreo and downloaded a metal gear soundboard and it works great!
Fix
Download Android Messages and do the following;
Tap the Conversation you wish to set a custom notification for.
Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner of the screen.
Tap People & options.
Tap Notifications.
Tap Sound.
Tap your desired tone.
Tap Save.
