My mum has a nexus and I've had a chance to play around with it quite a lot. It's a fantastic phone. Ics is buttery smooth and visually appealing in its aosp form. I've always been a fan of the stock android os. But at the end of the day, as great as The nexus is, it's just a phone.
The note is something unique and special. There's nothing else like it. The screen size is perfect. Once you go to a screen this size, you'll never go back. The only minor letdown for me is the touchwiz interface, but let's be honest, its easily changed. Its also the best manufacturer overlay in my opinion. HTC sense and the LG and Sony offerings are dire. Touchwiz is useable and attractive at least.
The nexus is a great phone, but the note is the one for me. It has drastically cut down on my laptop time. I use it for everything. Its also comfortable as an ereader.

At some point I had both the Nexus and the Note, but I didn't want two devices so I had to decide which one to sell.
I ended up keeping the Note. I loved the Nexus, don't get me wrong, but overall the Note had it's advantages.
The nexus is slick looking and easy to carry, ICS flies on the thing- no lags. A lot have whined about the camera, but personally I found it acceptable.
It wasn't easy to choose but after considering that the Note will also have ICS, I chose the Note.
I had the Nexus One (thought I know you're not referring to that one), then upgraded to the G Nexus as soon as it was available. I had considered the Note then, but chose the G Nexus because:
- Developer support and Google support for G Nexus
- I thought the Note was too big
- G Nexus had ICS
- G Nexus didn't have SAMSUNG logo on the front and it looked so cool being all black, and not the mention the sexy curve (hence my name for it was "Sexy Nexy").
So, after getting the G Nexus, I loved it! THe screen was so beautiful - my first experience of a super amoled screen, and I was blown away by how black the black was. And the size - super for reading.
I became addicted to big screens.
Then I started thinking... wouldn't it be EVEN BETTER with an even bigger screen, like the 5.3" on the Note?? I couldn't stop thinking about it. Eventually, I gave in, and sold the G Nexus and bought the Note. These were the reasons:
- Addicted to big screens, and was convinced the Note was not going to be too big (I was sooo right )
- Camera on Note is quite a bit better, IMO. I don't need 'zero shutter lag' that the G Nexus has, esp if it compromises on quality.
- I was already feeling the pinch on storage space on the Nexus, esp with all the Nandroid backups which were as big as 1Gb each! I just bought a 32Gb micro sd card for my Note, and I feel so much freer now!
- Some apps didn't work on ICS. Also I figured that GB wasn't that bad. Heck, I had lived with it and loved it on my N1 for how long? In any case, ICS should be here pretty darn soon, and by that hopefully all the apps I use will support it.
- I actually like having the row of fixed capacitative buttons and hard button on the Note. It is positioned right at the bottom of the phone, so actually, if you compare with the Nexus, it doens't take up any additional space (cos in the Nexus, there's just blank wasted space there). The great thing about having the buttons there is that your 'real' screen does not need to get wasted with the software buttons when ICS comes along - ie., you're getting even more screen real estate than you think!
- Better hardware on the NOte - processor and GPU. I also read and watched youtube reviews that seemed to indicate that the Note was quite a lot faster, and that the battery life is much better. (I can confirm both to be very true! - and see the youtube vid of someone with alpha CM9 on the Note, commenting that ICS feels even faster on the Note than on his Nexus!)
- I still think the Nexus is better-looking, but how far is looks going to get you? Also, I can live with the Samsung logo on the screen
- As for developer support, it was becoming clear to me that the Note was becoming very popular, and was getting a lot of developer support too. So far, it's definitely looking very true.
- Lastly, again - the screen size is so fantastic! I no longer use my tablet (ipad), even when I have both at my disposal. It's just so much easier to use the Note esp when lying down on the couch and reading from it.

I got a Note yesterday. I agree with all of the above. Nexus will be being sold very shortly. All other screens now look too small. Also, the signal seems better on the Note.
So far, only 2 things I don't like on the Note: (1) Gingerbread, but that will be upgraded soon and (2) Touchwiz, but when modded ICS ROMs come out, I'll start using them instead. Oh, and I'm not sure how I'm going to jog with my Note - it won;t fit in the pockets on my skins!
I have Ics on my a500 and love it and know its only a matter of time before the note has it so n biggie there. I also owned q streak when they were out so i lived the 5" screen ans have been craving it ever since . My infuse is nice but i want a unique phone like the note again.

There I go, 2 weeks ago got all excited and went to the electronic store to buy me the GNexus.. Yeah!
Wallked to the phone section and there it was, the awsome nexus, just waiting on me.. i picked it up. .. Had it in my hand, played with it and then i looked to the left.. Right next to the GNexus was the GNote.. I though.. Hmmmmmmmmmm. ..
After a few sec. Thinking and comparing both on the fly, I decided to go for the note, it fits excacly my needs and so far i dont regret it..
Sammy got me again... Dammn.. ;-) before i got the sgs i actually wanted the N900..
So get what you like, its just for the time being and only a phone..

I had both, kept the Note. Both are good phones. Video & battery life is better on the Note and the lack of expandable storage really on the Nexus tipped it.
With the Galaxy Note, do you still find yourself neediny a tablet? What devices are you presently using on a daily basis?
I currently use my 5.3 inch Galaxy Note as a phone/tablet but find myself using my 15 inch laptop more merely to save battery life.
I am looking into an Asus Transformer to replace my laptop. The one here looks good...

The Asus is the best tablet for me, as the keyboard dock would allow me to do my homework on it, and I would want a 10 inch tab if any. 7 inches is not enoughof a step up, in mu opinion, from any high-end smartphone nowadays that has a 4.5+ inch screen. The size difference between the Nexus 7 and Note is especially minimal.
Buying an extended Mugen will costs me almost a hundred dollars - more eveb perhaps thanks to VAT here in the UK . But it will offer me one perfect device and I would then only need a laptop for homework. Also, I couldn't afford two data plans and my unlimited 3 mobile plan does not alow tethering, unless there is a way around thia that anyone knows of?

Of course, the Asus Transformer Pad 300 has some pretty good specifications compared to other tabs and - unlike the Note - it can run tablet apps. The keyboard dock also looks useful. So, what do you all recommend?

I still use my original Transformer quite a lot. I've got the keyboard dock but use it less than I thought I would although I usually pair it up when not in use as it charges the tablet up brilliantly. I am looking to sell it (if anyone is interested) as I want a Note 10.1.
I'm too lazy to even go get my tablet from across the room and turn it on. My phone is always with me an arm reach away. It's so much easier and quicker, and my hand/wrist doesn't get tired from holding that heavy tablet. If I want to watch movies, I have a TV hooked up to my PC for that, with real speakers. I only have a One X right now, but that 4.7" is enough to make me semi-forget about my tablet. What will the 5.3" note that I ordered do?
Lol you know the funny thing is, I don't consider myself to have big hands. I guess my fingers or long, but I don't see it that way. Holding the One X, I have to sort of claw it since it's thin and angular on the side, sloping towards the screen. The Galaxy S III is probably wide enough, but lacks the thickness for comfortable grip too. The note I tried out at the store just engulfs my hand and I can grip it perfectly. It fits so well. I dunno about my pockets... I had a 7" nook color and could manage holding it at the latter half of my fingers without too much trouble. Too bad it doesn't fit in a pocket!
Used my missus iPad a few times to get her out of a pickle when the apps, need killing or updating, other than that I leave it to her, she loves it, it is big compared to my note, but then it is handy for showing friends family photos.

Thanks for all of your responses. As I said, it is a toss up between purchasing either an extended Mugen battery or an Asus Transformer Pad 300 and I'd like to hear what you all think I should purchase. Buying a Transformer would give me more screen real-estate, safe my phone's battery some heavy usage, a truly portable computer-like device and the keyboard would mean I wouldn't need to turn my laptop on to do my homework. However, buying a Mugen battery offers me a sole device capable of almost all my daily technological usage and I'd only have to switch to a laptop for some homework or if I wanted to do some light PC gaming (my laptop can't handle many games naturally).

Well, 10 inches is almost double the size of the Note, so it is a much larger size. I initially wanted a new laptop, as my current one is failing to run the games I recently purchased on the Steam summer sales. But, seeing as we have a main family computer capable of running these, I've begun to think about purchasing a 10 inch tab. The Transformer Pad 300 seems to offer me the functionality of a keyboard for homework at home, but I can take it off and simply carry the tab when I want to do some viewing in bed for example.

I disagree slightly here.
I have a Transformer Prime, a Nexus 7, and a Note.
The Prime is largely unused unless I am going somewhere where there is WiFi and I think that I may need to look at some work related issues - I don't care what anyone says, the Prime can serve quite well as an impromptu Netbook for the most part. It is seldom undocked these days though, and this is especially true now I have the Nexus 7 too.
Prior to getting the Nexus 7, I would mostly use my Note at home, but now I find myself reaching for my Nexus 7 more and more often - whilst 1.7" may not seem like much it makes a world of difference when reading books or comics. I had an original Samsung Galaxy Tab, and I've always been a fan of the 7" form factor.
My Note is still my primary media consumption device though, and if I could only keep one I would keep the Note, not just because it's also a phone (which I would require anyway) but because it can do everything the other devices can and more, even if sometimes it is slightly less convenient. Yesterday, whilst at the gym, I had an urgent call from work regarding something that required my attention, and I used Splashtop on the Note to connect to my PC at home in order to make some coding changes - it would've been a lot easier on the Prime, but given I was on an exercise bike at the time, that wasn't an option!

I see two options really...
Purchase an extended Mugen battery for my Galaxy Note, which will allow me to use the device fairly comfortably as a tablet with around 9 hours of screen time. The problem with this is that the battery turns the Note into a literal brick and, unless I purchased a wireless headset, I doubt I'd be able to comfortably make calls in public (not that I make calls at all on my phone really as I mainly just text). However, having one sole device that is still portable and offers me almost everything I need to do technologically - except homework- has some real appeal.
Purchase an Asus Transformer Pad 300, which will allow me to spare my Galaxy Note some heavy usage throughout the day and, consequently, have a longer lasting battery life. The keyboard will allow me to almost replace my laptop, as the device comes with Polaris Office installed for free. The larger screen would make my hours of YouTube browsing much more comfortable also. However, this option is much more expensive.

Thanks, but to me 7 inches is not enough of an increase - having personally seen my relative who lives with me's Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 also lacks a Micro-SD/SD card slot, which is something I'd have to have in a tablet or any mobile device personally.

Yes, but 5" is still kind of small to use every day!
I used to use my Galaxy note as tablet using Paranoid rom. Due to dpi (213), my eyes was easy to get tired and decided to move back to samsung rom with original setting and now everything seems fine even though I sometimes miss tablet interface.
Now I am using new ipad as tablet and I am very happy now. Bigger screen and feel like I am reading text on paper. I do also have a logitech unltrathin keyboard and I can use it as bluetooth keyboard and front cover as well. It is much sharper than galaxy note screen. I am planning to have a data share plan so I can use my new ipad as LTE tablet !
It is all about preference but I do prefer to have a tablet separately due to size of screen and comport for my eyes.

i was really looking forward to buy an Note 10.1 but with just resolution of 1280x800px - no way!

There is good Android tablet hardware, but tablet software...not so much. However, with the popularity of the Nexus 7, I suspect that will soon change as developers will produce tablet apps.
I'm about to sell my Nexus 10 to buy a smaller tablet. The Nexus 10 is great but it's too big to use comfortably daily. Playing games is almost impossible and holding the tablet in portrait it's too uncomfortable.
I've narrowed it down to the new Nexus 7 or the upcoming LG G Pad 8.3. I prefer the LG because 8 inches seems to be the perfect screen size for gaming, video playback, web browsing and PDF reading.
The Nexus 7 has great price, updates, great stock experience and it's already available. But I feel I would get tired of the small screen too quickly. Reading PDFs would be almost impossible, as well as web browsing.
I've been thinking about it for days and still can't decide.
Do you guys that own the Nexus 7 feel the screen is too small after a few months with it? I'll be using the new tablet at home always. I think the LG is great because it's the first 8 inch tablet with 1080P screen. The snapdragon 600 inside is also better and the battery is bigger also, but I know I wouldn't get updates. This wouldn't be too much of a problem if the tablet works for me. I think I could keep an 8 inch tablet longer than a 7.
No. In fact I think the size is perfect. Its wide enough to hold in one hand comfortably (portrait). It fits in my front jeans pocket (barely). Big enough to do whatever on.
The N7 uses an under clocked S600. It has updated cores and GPU. I don't know why they called it an S4 Pro. So speed wise you will see very little difference.
LG never supports their products. It will probably come out with 4.2.2 just as we're getting 4.4. They have horrible update schedules. You're lucky to get one OS update before EOL. Development on them are also lacking. They usually come locked without an easy way to unlock. The LG G2 is rooted by a special method but remains locked.
It will probably never see an update past 4.4
I wouldn't pick a LG device unless I gave it several months to settle and see where it ends up with updates and dev. They make some great hardware but really botch up the software and support. The G2 seems like a great phone out of the box but will be left in the dust in a few months. Take your chances with their tablet but think about one thing:
How well will you like it in a year when the N7 has the latest and greatest Android (5.0?) and cool ROMs and mods, and you're stuck on an iffy modified stock rom with no support?
I left the Nexus line once, and it was rough.
The 7" is very nice because you want to downsize for toting. It fits easier into your coat pockets and lighter. 7 and 8 inches aren't that different unless you are comparing. Standalone you won't even notice the difference.

Actually the N7's 7 inch display isn't too small for PDF and web browsing. Given its retina grade PPI, words are crisp even when they are zoomed out. I've been using it for my classes which I read PDF PowerPoint slides on daily basis, and I am happy with it. :good:
7 inch is also the largest you can get for comfortable 1 hand use with portrait mode. 8 inch tablets has to be held with 2 hands even in portrait.
You lay down, put tablet on your belly. Can be held with one hand...
So size doesn't matter.
Reading? n7 is good... No more headaches.
Oh well go with n7 and next year maybe a nexus8 will come out.
It sounds like you've answered your own question, you find 7" tablets to small. Both are excellent tablets, you can't really go wrong with either of them.
I've not used a Nexus 7 but have used a Galaxy Tab 2 7" and I thought the size was great for what it was, small, pocketable but 7" tablets are rather small for day to day use (they're fine for reading PDFs though, Kindles are even smaller).
Personally I find 10" tablets to big.
For me the iPad Mini is pretty much the perfect tablet size but Apple products interest me not. I was interested in the Galaxy Tab 3 8" but oddly for Samsung their Galaxy Tab specs are low. I understand both the Galaxy Tab 3 8" and LG G Pad 8.3 are roughly the same size and crucially aspect ratio as the iPad Mini.
It's the wider nature of 8" tablets that interest me and of course the LG G Pad 8.3 is a much better tablet than the Galaxy Tab 3 8".
Sure I doubt LG will upgrade the version of Android much (if at all), their track record is poor but you know what Android 4.2.2 is already a decent version of Android and it's not as if Android 4.3/4.4 add much.
Yes not getting Android 5.0 (possibly) would irk me but it's all about the size and aspect ratio with a tablet for me and 8" tablets are the "sweet spot". Plus I like the look of QSlide, it doesn't look as useful as Samsung's Multi-Window but is the next best thing. Being able to display two apps at once on a tablet is genuinely useful.
p.s - IMO this whole phones/tablets not getting the latest Android version is overrated, you've still bought a decent product (hopefully) and the past few Android upgrades have been minor anyway. Android 4.0 came out 2 years ago!

I had the Nexus 7(2013) and returned it because of the nonfunctional GPS and random reboot issues. From what I understand, the GPS now works, but the reboot issues persist, and some still complain of multitouch issues.
I've got the LG G2 and it's the best phone I've ever owned. With that said, I'm looking forward to the G Pad. The Q-Pair software looks really slick, in that you can tether to your phone(supposedly any Android phone) for a data connection with one click. It will also send and receive texts and phone calls from a connected phone.
As to the comments about one handed use, the G Pad is a hair under 1/2" wider than the Nexus 7, thanks to the thin bezel. LG supposedly studied average hand sizes to come up with comfortable overall dimensions.
I'd say if you want the bleeding edge latest-greatest version of Android, and can live with the smaller screen, Asus build quality, and random reboots, go with the Nexus 7.
If you don't mind slow or no software updates, but want a bigger screen, most likely superior build quality, and hopefully no random reboots, go with the G Pad 8.3. That said, I'd still wait for it to hit the market to see if any serious issues surface.
I'm in the same situation as you. I currently have the nexus 7 and love the screen quality and all. It's good for reading super small texts but I've always felt like 8 inch screen was the perfect size. I'm waiting to see when the lg comes out and the price. If it's $299, that's a bargain and I'm probably gonna sell my nexus 7 and get the LG. I'm not too worried about software with the LG because I know I'm gonna end up rooting it and installing AOSP on it eventually.
Also I feel like the nexus 7 doesn't have a great build quality. my nexus 7 most likely has a grounding issue (ie: I have touches not registering when I place it flat on my bed or table) but who knows maybe lg will have the same problem. I would say wait for lg to come out, play with it, then make your decision
LG is terrible with releasing updates for their products. I'd actually wait a bit to see if the dev community does anything for it. I had a phone from them that they basically stopped doing updates for a month after it was released, rendering it useless. I had bought it on the basis that they were going to release an update for it, and after a year, they didn't.
My Nexus 7 2013 have been great, and have neither multitouch or random reboot issues. If the Gpad can be rooted/unlocked/restored as easily as Nexus 7 and have a Dev community just as large I might consider it. Otherwise I prefer the Nexus 7.
I have an N7 2013 running PA to get the Tablet UI, which I feel works much better than Phablet mode (lots more real estate).
I do feel the N7 bezels are a waste and would much prefer an 8" tablet with much smaller bezels. I had an iPad mini before the N7 (my wife has it now!) and as much as iOS is boring, it worked much better as a tablet in terms of its size. So I'm thinking the LG would close that gap.
Like others, however, I feel it would need to be BL unlockable to make the switch. I have hope only because it's a WiFi only device, thus no carriers to be beholden to.
LG G Pad 8.3 to be available October 14th in Korea and other markets by the end of the year.
Price: 510$.

I love the new N7. I just got rid of my iPad 3, it was big and of course boring. I'm not experiencing any of those issues, I rooted and unlocked it straight outta the box, still running stock ROM. It's great for web browsing and everything else of course. I personally think this is the best tablet on the market. You can't go wrong with price, usability and support from Google and XDA.
For on the go, I like the 2013 N7. My 2012 got really laggy even after the update. There are a few bugs still with the touch response, but its better now. Ill still use an iPad 3 at home, mainly because the wife prefers Apple. The LG looks like it could be nice, but not for the rumor prices.
It's really about the tradeoff you want to make. The new N7 is great and it wins where Nexus devices win: frequent updates, freedom to flash and competitive pricing. If you're a person (like me) who likes to muck about a lot, there's no alternative. With non-Nexus devices, I think you have to ask yourself if you're potentially comfortable with that device as-is for the entire time you own it. If it never got a new feature or the newest OS base and the like, would you be satisfied with the purchase? If you feel good saying yes to that, it sounds to me like the screen size is a big feature for you, so I'd go that way. If you're putting your faith in an OEM to fix or improve software, there's history to support the conclusion that you will generally be disappointed, as a rule of thumb. Just go into the purchase with your eyes open to that likely scenario and you'll be fine.

Today I went to a store to try again the Nexus 7 and I think I'm sold. Great screen, great materials, very nice to hold with one hand, stock android, etc. Then I tried the Note 8.0 and Tab 3 8.0 and they felt heavier and my hand got tired much quickly than with the Nexus 7. Screen was not that bad, but comparing touchwiz to stock on the Nexus 7 showed me again stock is better for a tablet.
I'm not gonna wait for the LG. Will try the Nexus 7 for a week and see how that goes.
Fistly, for comparing, we must try in hand G8.
I bought a month ago N7 lte, and now thinking to try G8, and if it will be the same in tactical feelings i prefer 8 inch vs 7 inch.
10 inches is big for mobility, 7 - small for reading. 8 - best compromise.
And of course, price is one more important factor.

This tablet is great. Bought it today to replace my Nexus 10, which is a great tablet but I just can't use it comfortably holding it for hours. Too heavy and big. Playing games was impossible, as doing almost everything else.
I wasn't quite sure about 7 inches, but after a couple of hours playing with the device I can say it's great. It's AWESOME being able to hold the tablet with one hand for long periods of time without problems.
The screen is even better than the one in my Nexus 10: more bright and better colors. It just pops out.
The performance is great also. It may be slightly slightly faster and more fluid. It's great having such a good GPU: the adreno 320. I've gotalso more RAM available now, since with the Nexus 10 we were losing more and more RAM with every update Google released. They were giving more memory to the GPU and in the end I only had 500MB free. Now I have 1,2GB! This is after all apps installed and everything obviously.
It's so light and comfortable. In the end this is the most important feature.
I'm super impressed with the quality of the speakers! So loud and clear! I got the 32GB model for 249. Great price.
I can definitely see that Google has put more care in the software performance of this device than on the Nexus 10. Performance is consistent, no lags, no reboots or freezes for now. Even touch response is better than on the Nexus 10. Trust me.
I can finally play games comfortably and do everything without having to hold in my hands such a huge tablet. No more 9 inch tablets or bigger for me thanks. Even 8 inches seems big now. I actually tried the Note 8.0 and Tab 3 8.0 on the store before buying the Nexus 7 and they weren't as comfortable to hold as the Nexus 7. The plastic was horrible and it slips out of my hands. Touchwiz didn't perform half as quick and smooth as stock on the Nexus 7.
This is the best experience I've had with Android definitely. Can't imaging how Google will be able to improve this hardware anymore in the next versions. The materials are excellent, screen can't be better, loud speakers... and I'm even getting great battery life.
Now just waiting for 4.4. So happy right now. Selling my Nexus 10 this week.

That's the conversion price. you can't go off of that because the US price will be different from the won price. example: the note 8 has the same won price as the lg g pad but only costed $400 in the US. the ipad mini was 640,000 won (vs 650,000 for note 8 and lg g pad) and only costed $329 in the US. only way to tell the true cost will be to wait until they release that info for the US, which is after South Korea so next!
Samsung just released their new tablets that 8 inch looks interesting to me depends on price however. How does it compare to gpad for you ?

I'm still happy with my purchase and the deal I got on it ($259 USD via Newegg). The Samsung Pro 8.4 is the only one that makes me blink. Faster chip, good. Marginally larger battery to deal with the screen, bad. Touchwiz, higher resolution screen, meh. The G Pad, for its meager shortcomings, offers a heckuva lot of bang for the buck, at the price I got it anyway. Not regretting it!

Lol yeah I missed that deal I live in New jersey so payed tax $300 so if it's around $300 -$350 I would be all for it lol. My gpad comes tomorrow so well see I guess. It should have pretty good development support and accessories.

I feel the same. The 8.4 inch display model is pretty sweet.. Pricing may be a bit higher, so again.. I wouldn't buy it just cause of that. And the 3 hardware buttons on the front is a no go. It's old and I don't like it as much as having a blank screen where it's just me and the screen/movie/book.. The over all design looks good ol' fashion Samsung. Looks sturdy and has kindof a Galaxy S2 feel to it. The S2 was the best mobile phone I've ever had. Damn a lot of stuff happened back then. But yeah, looks like a decent tablet. But I think I'll be quite happy with the G Pad still, since it does have what I'm looking for in a nice, cheap package and decent build quality.
The Samsung Exynos 5 Octa CPU is a new gen processor which samsung tries to make it use all eight cores at once. If a tablet with that chip comes out it will surely be very powerful and definitely better than gpad.
As long as Samsung uses a home button i will never buy again.I'm very happy with the pad.
The new Touch Wiz looks really awful. I don't even know what they're thinking. It's like they want it to work and look like Windows 8 but don't want to use Windows 8. Personally I wouldn't touch the new tabs with a 10 foot pole.

I am an owner of note 10.1 2012 ..... I am looking up to
Change my tab as there is no updates for it at all ... Till now it is on version 4.1.2 and it is 100% guaranteed now after these pro tablets unveiled there will be no updates for the older devices ... I wont buy any of these new pro tablets because of the price firstly and in the future they will be thrown to the dust like my note 10.1 now ..... Also i am thinking of getting lg g pad 8.3 but no software updates like my current note and lack of dev support keeps me away
I'd be very surprised if the 8.4 was less than $399. I'm sure Samsung considers it to be fully equivalent to the newest iPad mini. Samsung used to compete on price but no more. When I bought my first plasma TV in 2007 Samsung was a much better deal than Panasonic or Pioneer. When it came time to buy another one last year I thought Samsung was too expensive and bought an LG I'm very happy with.

Quite simply, I am going to switch to a Tab Pro 8.4 as soon as it is available.
It has a way better display, it has NFC (which I miss), it's way more powerful (G Pad is pretty slow), it has a polycarbonate back (I dislike the faux leather, I would much rather have a rubber back like the Nexus 7 2013 or the old Samsung HyperGlaze but anything is WAY, WAY better than effing METAL!!!!) and the Samsung one is the best version of Android around (MultiWindow *alone* would do it for me).
I can't wait to get my hands on it.
P.S. Actually, the ONLY reason I am interested in mid-sized tablets (8"/8.5") is WEIGHT.
Anything beyond 350/400 grams is simply too heavy to be ergonomic and truly comfortable for extended use.
The new Samsung Tab Pro 10.1" is 469grams and I am planning on trying it out with the intention of switching back to a 10.1"...
Ideally, my perfect tablet would be something like the Note Pro 12.2" but would weigh no more than 400 grams with an all-day battery life... (which is, of course, not technically possible. YET).

Pretty Slow? Try CM 11, Stock is slow. Switching from G Pad to Notepro 8.4 seems useless to me.
I am sort of disappointed that the G Pad is no longer the best 8 incher but it's still pretty great so its fine...
I doubt I will bite. I like my LG 8.3 GPE a lot. Samsung does this to me every year: announce something that captures my imagination, I'm intrigued, I convince myself it will be at a palatable price point, and then finally delivers something I consider too expensive and doesn't hit the sweet spot for my tastes.
I do own a Galaxy Note 10.1, and I love it. But the 2014 edition left me a bit cold.
I doubt I will dip into these waters again, probably just upgrading to a new Nexus 10 when the timing feels right.
I'm very happy with my G Pad and won't switch. If the Samsung 8.4 was available a couple of weeks ago at a competitive price I would have taken it, simply due to previous experience with both LG and Samsung phones. I like the idea of hard buttons on the bezel - means more screen space. There will also be more development on the Samsung tablets.

The G Pad with CM11 or the G Pad GPE are surely faster but you would have to give up, among other things, Knock On, the IR Remote and full SDcard support and those are huge deal breakers for me.
True, LG's ROM is most certainly slower and laggier than stock Android but it's also way more feature complete (which is probably also *why* is slower...). Features that I do use.
Besides the ones just mentioned, there are dozens of things like Quickmemo, the overlay apps (QSlide), the keyboard with the numbers row, the volume and brightness sliders and on and on...
Switching from G Pad to Notepro 8.4 seems useless to me.

I also forgot to mention that notwithstanding pretty much identical size and weight, the display is sensibly bigger on the Tab Pro as it's not only 0.1" physically bigger but it also doesn't have virtual buttons taking up screen real estate.
So, far from "useless"... The money I will lose selling the G Pad and buying the Tab Pro is really a very small price to pay for such a big upgrade.
P.S. I am not dissing my G Pad, still like it a lot and still think it's the overall best mid-size tablet on the market right now.
I have no intentions of switching as i really love this lg. I also suspect that these new Pro models will not be cheap. For my uses the lg is plenty fast and smooth. And since a tablet is just entertainment for me, there is only so much any tablet is worth and i bet these new Samsung tablets will exceed that price.

What Rom will it come with? I've learned to only buy with Qualcomm cpus because they get the best long-term support. There's a chance that the Qualcomm ones are only for lte support....

You said switching to a notepro 8.4 would be a small price to pay, but you have no idea how much its going to cost. I bet at least 400.
BTW, knock on works just fine on CM 11. IR support is missing, haven't tried a SD card. Is it not going to work? Oh, and be sure the new bloated "pro" touchwiz will be slower than the lg rom.

I just picked up the g pad from Verizon for $99 and I love it. I was torn between those devices as well but for that price it was an easy decision. It is light enough to hold for extended periods but when I watched my movies I use the flip out case. I'm coming from a 10" tablet and my phone is already over 5" so kind of wanted the bigger screen. Honestly I probably still would of got this tablet if the nexus and g pad were same price.
After seeing both, I went for the G Pad. Never regreted. 8.3 is so much better than 7

The reason I use a stand is so that it's more comfortable than having to hold it all the time and because it keeps it upright on an uneven surface not specifically because of weight.

Try hold your hand in the same posiition for the length of a movie.
Just your hand alone will feel uncomfortably heavy and big.
If you go the G pad route, buy the wifi model over the LTE. The LTE has no root yet where the wifi models do already.
The difference in weight is not that much between these two tablets. I think you can barelly feel the difference.

8.2" vs 7" inches is like 50" vs 42"..
For me gpad.. better screen (i like this more than nexus 7), same performance (with aosp roms), microsd, build quality, screen dimensions, estetic, e some others little things
If you have the budget whait for galaxy tab 8.4 pro.. you miss some things (in my point of view) like estetic, build quality, knock on etc, but you will take better screen and better processor
I enjoy knock on my g gpad and I like the Spen on my note. I want LG to make a tablet with a pen and I'll buy it

Having owned both,
The Nexus-7 2013 by far is the best of the 2 choices for watching full length movies in bed..
The 30% difference in screen size is nullified by simply moving the screen slightly closer to your eyes... If you want to use the "Bigger is Better" analogy..
As far as quality... it's no contest.. Having owned both and having watched many a night of Netflix & Slingbox from the prone position, The Nexus is a Far Better Choice over the LG.. The weight distribution is much, much better.. and the screen much, much brighter..
I have both too, LG Pad is nice for general use but screen is too dark and sound is also not as good as the nexus. Just my opinion.

Anyway, the G Pad 8.3 is better than the 7" tablet. I upgrade from a 7" tablet to this 8.3" device, and the difference is really huge.
The convenience of holding the tablet with one hand adds to the benefits of viewing videos/documents on this larger screen compared to the smaller 7" device. Additionally, it is more convenient than using a 10" device.
I actually just sold my Nexus 7 for a G Pad and am very happy. The increased screen size is nice even though the device isn't that much bigger, since it doesn't have the excessive bezel like the Nexus 7 does. Haven't had any problems with my screen like many say they do, I keep it at around 50-60% usually. The G Pad has a micro sd slot which is nice for being able to store more movies and music. Plus it has a haptic feedback motor which for me, improves the touch experience a little bit more.
I too switched from the Nexus 7 2013 to the G Pad google play edition.
The Nexus is an awesome device and yes it's brighter and the sound it produces is better.
But, I have to say that I am enjoying the larger screen on the G Pad. I had the Nexus from the day it was released and just never was able to get used to the 7 inch screen, having come from a 10 inch Motorola Xoom. I have watched plenty of movies and you tube videos on both devices and I have had zero issues with comfort, brightness and sound quality with either one.
The 8.3 g Pad is the perfect size and I'm glad that I made the switch.
I have both and I'm having a really hard time deciding, I love reading books in bed with the LG G pad but it does get a little tiring holding it up on my belly where as the Nexus feels great in hand for games. As far as Movies I usually watch them on the LG just because it's bigger. As far as the brightest between the two I have no complaints about the LG being a little darker. But I love both and cannot decide which one I like better yet
