[Q] LG G2 change default contacts save location - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having trouble with saving contacts. By default it is set to "phone" and everytime I have to choose my google account when saving account.
I tried deleting data in apps , "contacts, phone, etc,..." but still when creating new contact it is selected to save in "phone"
Has anyone any clue how to set default save location to my google account?
thank you!

Go into settings while in contacts, and uncheck the other options, leaving only Google contacts selected.
Thanks Devs. From my VZW G2.

Nope... doesnt work for me... I have checked settings /contacts to show / custom and unchecked all but my google account.
stilll when typing number and saving a contact or creating new contact.. default selected is "phone"

My Incredible 4G does that too. Annoying.

Go in to Phone orContacts settings, and then click "Contacts to display"
Select your google account.
It will then default to save on your google account. Obviously you will not see contacts from the phone or other accounts but I save everything on google so works for me.
cheers!

Nothing helps - searching since 6 month!

Nope, it will remain saving new contacts to the phone as default. I also have all my contacts saved to google, because i sync it with other devices. I'm realy wondering that only a few people complain about this issue.
If someone found a solution in the meantime - please let me know. Thanks

Same here

Not really a solution but FYI http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50637743#post50637743

I have same problem but I don't know any solution for it at all. I though the KK update will make a difference but it didn't do anything. The problem remains the same in KK as it was in JB:crying:

Yip same problem here with no solution. Lost my contacts because of it. Really poor from lg.

It is not LG thing, It is KK to blame; Last update of KK (4.4.2) does ALWAYS default save location to "phone" It IS realy annoying !
you can choose google acc. from drop down menu when saving a new contact, but you have to do it so EVERY time you add new contact
P.S. And no, you have not lost your contacts: just go to settings in contacts app, then choose display contacts and select customize, then check google contacts and phone - voala

Add one more person who was wondering and getting annoyed with that... isn't it a bit strange that there's no setting to change the default contact location??
Anyway... is there a way to export contacts from the phone to Google? Say for example you're in a rush to add a bunch of contacts, can you somehow get them into your Google Contacts later on?
Guess I will try and add all contacts on a computer from now on.

One more person who finds this really awkward. It must have been the same before KitKat, because when I updated (and wiped my phone) I lost a few recently added contacts...
The same applies to the calendar, new entries are by default added to the phones calender, and I can't find a setting to change this.
Finally, whats up with the "recent calls"-menu? If I go there, I expect a list of the calls I've made, received and missed, in reversed chronological order. Going to "recent calls" on the G2... Well, I can't for the life of me figure out what it shows. I always have to go via menu and filter out either dialed, received or missed. It's idiotic.

I would be very happy if LG fixes this error in the next firmware version.

no one has found the fix yet?
its weird

When you save a new contact, you have an option above to choose . Phone Contact is default, you can also choose Google or SIM .
Hope this will help .
P.S Sorry for my english mistakes .

Problem still present in Lollipop...
No fix yet ?!

We already know this. We just want "Google" from the dropdown list as default, every time.

Still not resolving?..

Same problem for me...
Really annoying!!!
Seem impossible there's no way to trick it...

[Q] Where do new contacts go?

I'm having a really bizarre problem with my G2. I can enter and save a new contact in my phone, however, when I try to look for that contact to call/text they do not appear in the list of contacts. It's almost as if I never entered the info at all except if the contact calls/texts me their name will appear then.
Has anyone experienced this same problem and if so how did you correct it? I'll mention I did port all my numbers over to this phone in the T-Mobile store using the hardware device for data transfer (and it seems not all of them made it over).
I had that same issue on my G1. If I added them from the phone - it wouldn't show in my text drop down. They all seem to work now that I switched. Go to Gmail and play with the groups that the contacts are in - see if that helps. Maybe you need to have your phone display all the groups instead of a select few.
I had this problem too. Go into Contacts>Menu>Display Options>Your Google Account and make sure the system group "My Contacts" is checked.

I looked and "My Contacts" is selected as well as "Imported Contacts" was already selected. Hmm...well I checked all the other boxes in my Google Account and it has seemed to correct the problem.

[Q] Is it better to save contacts to phone or google?

Just wanted to know which was better and why. I have a samsung I9000
Thanks
well if you save to google, and then you get a new android phone your contacts are always there when you login to your google account from your phone. i always save to google
save it on google. If anything happens to your phone, you will not need to worry about losing your contacts. It'll always be there and it's easier to edit contact on Google anyways. This is also helpful if you switch roms a lot. You wont have to copy out your contact and copy it back in everytime.
With applications like Google Sync, I was able to take my contacts and import them into my old Blackberry. When switching to my Android phone the import of contacts was automagical.
Save it to Google, and then export from there into a csv file an additonal backup.
My only issue with saving to Google is you can't assign custom ringtones to non-phone based contacts =/
Anyone know if this is fixed in 2.2?
I've lost my iPhone couple weeks ago and thanks gods all my contacts were in clouds!

What do you want the ringtone for if it's not from a phone?
Another reason to like google vs phone ... It's damn convenient to add a contact on the web page as needed, especially if someone emails you the information and you can just copy&paste it.
I've used Google for mine ever since I bought the G1 when it came out. Come to think of it if I wouldn't have I'd probably not have all of my numbers.
Good stuff.
One question
I synced my contact to my Google account, and since it is syncing, if I accidentally deleted all my contact in the phone, it will probably delete the contact in my Google account too, right?
Or it can restore the backup?

Uh...I think the OP was referring to the difference between the Google contacts and the phone contacts. Meaning that you cannot set ringtones for Google (non-phone) contacts, not contacts without phone numbers.
Although, if there is one thing I really miss from when I initially switched from a Blackberry to the G1, two years ago, was being able to basically setup "filters" for incoming calls, emails and SMS, a customize how each filter was handled.

Depends on the definition of "deleted"...
I don't think it is even possible to accidentally delete all of your contacts. They could be erased by some external means or memory failure, but the sync algorithm does not see that as a delete. A delete is selecting a contact and selecting "delete contact" from the context menu.

Accidentally Delete means someone press delete all on the phone..
The sync will not remove contact from google if you delete from phone. As for ring tone, we'll just need some dev to port stock android contact over. In stock android contact you can set ring tone for individual contact without having the contact on the phone.

Sounds like google is the way to go but how do I get my numbers in "groups" if its linked to google, such as doctors, freinds, family, work? I see that the google ones are a group themselves

You can use backupify, com to backup your google contacts at certain intervals.
That's a nice option to have if you ever accidentally delete your contacts.
If you delete a google contact from your phone it WILL be deleted off of your account. It is a two way sync.

Not directly.
There is no way to sync a phone contact to your Google contacts. You will have to create a separate Google contact.
I think a previous commenter gave the best advice to just use a ROM that has the vanilla android contact app. I think the TWIZ hybrid ROM has the vanilla contacts app.
I have the same complaint. I trying to hold off until there is a vanilla FroYo before using a custom ROM.
Does this mean that none of you are saving your contacts to your sim card?

That's the least advanced way to save a contact because you can only have a name and number, that is all.
I use to save all contacts to sim with my old phones. As soon as I started using my google account I stopped saving to the sim. Mind you I've been with t-mobile for five years with the same sim.

[Q] Atrix (motoblur) creates contacts that i don't want

Hey Guys....
When i send a email from my gmail account (on a PC) if that email address is not in my gmail contacts it gets created as a contact on my phone !!
I'm not sure if this motoblur doing this or is it gmail. a contact isn't created in my gmail contacts just in the contacts of my atrix. when i click on the new contact it says it's a linked contact from google.
anyone else experience this....is there a setting i'm missing ??
go to contacts, hit the menu button, select more, settings, then click phone numbers only.

that option doesn't exist....when i go to contacts -> menu -> more -> settings all it has are two sections "new contacts" and "sim card contacts" with checkboxes to enable them or not. I don't see "phone numbers only".

This!!!
Also, I heard Google is going to end that annoying thing where contacts are automatically added. I hate flashing a new ROM or reloading my Contacts list to see a bunch of stupid email addresses everywhere. I'm a neat freak.

Bell Atrix? I'm on the AT&T one.
i assure you it is there for me. Try stumbling though all the contact settings.
Its not there for bell users. something i discovered as I have 200+contacts that are in there that aren't in my contacts.
Gmail (via your pc) now has the option to stop from saving email addresses to your contacts. Along with that you can delete those other contacts from there (if you don't need them) I ended up saving the ones I knew I'd use for sure and deleting the rest.
This is one of those little things that I noticed right away and really bugs me - why would Bell/motorola take this feature out? It's so useful.

good...i'm glad it wasn't just me (yes i'm on a bell atrix). Thanx for your help guys
funny thing was i came from a nexus one and they have the option to do "phone numbers only" too.
I love the atrix for a number of things, but sometimes i miss the simple bare bones of the nexus one interface....or as some call it "the pure google experience"
same here with the N1 and that was turned on by default. also the ability to show contacts by groups was nice to have. not sure why manufacturers take stuff away from the "pure experience" and not just focus on adding stuff to it.

I have been searching for the same sir. The other thread that was made on this, came up with nothing.
The default behaviour of android is to save to the last location selected, but the G2 phonebook doesn't seem to allow changing from the default which is the phone memory.
Rooting the device and tinkering with the APK for the phonebook could do something, but apart from that, I havn't been able to find a solution.
Plus one on this one

Just edit the contact and at the very top it will show where its saved, click there and chose where u want to save it to (select the gmail acct u want to use). Also you can export all your contacts to a file then login to your gmail from a computer and import that file.

Same with calendar's.
anyone found work around to this? My galaxy S2 can do it easily, once I save my 1st contact to gmail, it sets gmail as my default contact storage and I don't have to keep selecting gmail every time I want to save a new contact. But with G2 I have to keep selecting every time I want to add new contact to the list.
+1 here... (I started another thread and now I found this one with same problem)
In calendar it shows only selected calendars that is ok. And somehow it uses my default google account for calendars.
But in contacts it gives option to save to "phone, SIM, google account 1 and google account2" and default is phone.
lg g2
I have KK 4.4.2 and i have the same problem. It's very annoying...Everytime i have to change when i want to save a contact.
Thanks to this feature (bug), I have lost quite a few contacts.
This is a serious issue which can potentially prevent you from getting laid. If you know what I mean.

Sorry for bumping old thread, but is there any fix for this?
Its annoying to click every time to change sync from phone to google, plus, I lost many contacts because of this when changed the ROM
the bug is still present in lollipop
Same bug in the G3.
I wonder if the G4 suffers from it as well.
I wish for an xposed module would fix it.

when you try to add contacts, set the phone location for saving it, should be 3 options, phone, simcard, and Google's account
I mean I want the google option to be default.

Manually set to save in Google is the only way I know so far.
Default is convenient, yes, but I guess it's the way to go now.
I have the T-Mobile D801. The 1st time I hit the (+) button to create a contact a menu came up asking me what I want the default storage to be. I haven't found a way to change this or get the menu to come up again.
I would be very happy if LG fixes this error in the next firmware version.
on my d800 after adding a contact and changing location to gmail once, now whenever I add contacts it always default to gmail
SOLVED
If you have the LG G2 on Verizon you can go into the Verizon cloud app and disable it from syncing anything at all.. This will force the phone to save it as Google. I looked at this forum because I couldn't figure it out. I then tried this and it worked! You're welcome!
