battery dying at 30%

Hi,
I bought a nexus 7 from best buy 2 weeks ago. After a update to android 4.1.1 (I guess), my battery dies at 30% without avertissement, but a "bip" sound from my device. Is it a hardware problem? I never rooted my Nexus 7, I tried a factory reset and it didn't worked.

Yesterday my Nexus died about 1 minute after giving me the 5% warning. Strange, but I'll just wipe battery stats in ClockWorkMod (root)

Had the battery die on me at 11% the other day.
I've seen people screenshot their battery stats even at 1%, so is this a result of us improperly charging it?

The first time I unpacked my nexus, I waited until my battery reach 0% and die. Then I full charged my nexus without touching it. I don't think this problem is due to improper charging.

I had what sounds like the same problem. First time after fully charging the device died on me at 15% (screen messed up for a second then killed power) with no warning whatsoever. I wiped battery stats, fully charged it, wiped battery stats again and haven't had the problem since. Granted, I haven't had the device that long but I have done 2-3 cycles now where I tested how low it would get, and it seems like my device shuts off normally now when it's been on 1% battery for a while. Hope this helps

I doubt it's your problem too, but you did improperly charge it right out of the box. You should have fully charged it before turning it on, and running Li-ION batteries down to 0% is never a good idea either.

I never heard that and I haven't got any problem with my other devices and I have done the same thing with them.

My N7 is doing the same thing at 25%. It will just shut off abruptly without any warning and won't turn on until it's plugged into a charger. This effectively cuts my run time by 1/4. I was thinking of returning this otherwise perfect device but does anyone have a fix for it?

Yeah, this happened to me too. It seemed to happen after I unlocked the boot loader the first time. The tablet wasn't 100% charged when I did this, which might have been the problem. I also made the mistake of fully charging the device after buying it without letting it run down. (Edit: Actually I have no idea any more what the "proper" thing to do is with new devices... so who knows? Maybe what I did was right, but doesn't matter...)
I fixed it by fully charging and re-locking the boot loader. Then I let the battery run down to 0% (it didn't die at 25% this time like it used to). After fully charging it back to 100% I re-unlocked the boot loader and it was still fixed
If you haven't done any boot loader tomfoolery, perhaps charging to 100% and doing a factory reset might help?

I found battery calibration apps didn't help. Best thing to try is charge to 100% and do a factory reset (point the nexus root toolkit to the factory image from Google and flash it). That's what fixed it for me (and fixed another unrelated issue I was having too).

Battery 0% - Unkown

Hi,
My battery info screen is always showing 0% - Unknown. I´ve tried different charging options but with no success.
The battery is charging and when I connect the Nexus 7 to the adapter/pc is says charging - 0% when locked.
Any help is appreciated.

Had the same problem. It was not ROM specific. Even though the reading said 0 it was still charging normally (as far as I could tell).
I called Google (I bought my Nexus 7 from the Play Store) and they replaced it. I think that the battery sensor was bad.

Just to let everyone know I tried both that app and clearing battery sats in CWM, neither did anything. I even ran it dead and then fully charged with no change. The OP may have a different problem but in my case I definitely think it was a hardware sensor issue.

Um, weird, I came home after leaving my tablet on my desk all day at home, with about 35% battery.
It was dead. Like really dead. Dead dead. I don't know if it should've run down 35% totally idle; I'd left it for 3 days before without a problem.
Now when I plugged it in, it turned straight on. Google Screen -> Lock Screen. No colored X.
Showed 0% for 10 minutes. The battery graph was especially weird. For one thing, it had locked the stats and showed as still on battery basically. For another, it showed going from the low end of green to instantly dropping to 0%, red. Unplugged it, and it died instantly.
I'm letting it charge now with it off. Quick power button press shows the charging indicator thing.
I actually have an RMA out for this one for the touch screen issues, so it doesn't matter, but still... weird.

Old thread but I thought I'd add to it for other people with the same problem.
I have basically have the same issue on a stock, rooted 16GB Nexus 7. It's highly intermittent.
It first reared it's head about a month after I got the device (in Aug 2012), on the original firmware. My nexus 7 wouldn't (appear to) charge past 25% and would shut itself off after being on for only a few hours. I spent a day trying to fix it, including wiping the device, but nothing worked. Then magically, a few days later, the problem was gone.
The Nexus 7 worked fine for another month or so and then one day, after having charged it for several hours, I noticed that it was reporting a 0% charge. (Firmware was still stock but had been updated) This time it didn't power off, it just misreported it's charge. I could still run it for 10 hours or so, even though it said that it had a 0% charge and that I should connect the charger. I tried the "battery calibrator" mentioned in this thread which didn't seem to work but the next day, the device reported it had a charge. It's been randomly fluctuating between reporting 0% and a having charge every since. Sometimes it works fine for several days but then it will say 0% again.
It hasn't really affected my use of the device but it can be inconvenient not knowing how much charge you have left. Today I finally called Google and explained the problem and they promptly offered to exchange it. Hopefully this is not a design flaw but a faulty component from bad batch..

There's more than a good bit of bad advice in this thread. That anyone would waste people's time by recommending a ”battery calibration” app or to wipe battery stats is disheartening, as it is widely known that they have no correlation to battery indication.
More often than not, it seems, this problem with the N7 involves the battery connector not being properly seated.

I'm also having a similar problem, though when my nexus 7 completely dies from the battery I plug in and right away power back up and when it comes to the home screen with 0-1% charge it right away powers down. I tried leaving it off while pluged in let it charge for 5 mins and then power back up again till I see it have a minimum amount of charge, it seems to work not sure if its ROM or kernel related, I'll keep an eye on it.

Finally open the back cover (quite easy) and found that the battery cable connector is loose. So I tightened and my tablet is well again.

Yeah what worked for me was to also unplug my battery. Seemed to correct itself after that. Mine would shut off showing a charge of 60%.

Does the back just unsnap like a regular battery door?

I have issues sometimes. Like the other night it charged all night and when I woke up it was fine, turn off the alarm on it and had breakfast. Came back and it wouldn't come on. Tried all I could without taking it apart. Ended up removing the back cover, unplugging the battery for ten seconds and then it worked fine. Battery was at 100% once it booted up.

Use your fingernail to get between it and the chassis. It pops off pretty easy. Just be careful. I'm sure YouTube has a few videos showing it.

Hi.. I Have the same model and I had the same problem...
I made the turn off method (https://plus.google.com/+DerekRoss/posts/563EVVEPMDS) and did not work...
I rooted my Nexus to calibrate the Battery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1838429) and did not work.
But the in my case the most simple solution works : Unplug /plug the Battery (http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/mobile/Knrn4DThksg/ovuWYHUytZ0J).

N7 JB 4.2 strange charging issue

My stock unrooted 16gb n7 received the 4.2 update this morning, all has been fine until this evening when it needed charge.
It often gets plugged into a htc phone charger, which has worked fine since i bought the tab a few months ago until today, its a 1amp charger so it takes ages to charge, but thats fine as it is plugged in until the morning normally.
So i plugin as normal, and come back after setting up google play music on my desktop pc, and i see the unit rebooting showing the glowing X. The screen goes blank and is unresponsive, eventually the google logo appears and it boots normally (its still plugged in btw), after unlocking the screen goes mental after maybe 5 seconds with random noise on it, then goes black.
So i unplug and use the genuine asus charger and cable, it does the same twice over, reboot, freeze, long wait then reboot.
I have now left it on charge using the asus charger and it seems to be ok now
Have google changed some charging requirements? Anyone else seen this?

Not sure, but my nexus 7 on Android 4.2 charges like 35% slower than did with 4.1.2..... what the hell did they do??

The N7 seems fine today, i did make a couple of videos of it misbehaving last night, watching back my circle battery widget app jumps from 16% to 0% battery just before it goes blank, indicating it might have simply run flat but thought it still had 16% battery?
Wonder if they have changed the battery meter scaling?
I think i will run it flat and check it shuts down properly like it used to

Hi dexterslab,
On a side note when you update to 4.2 were you already rooted and did you have superSU version0.98 installed? I have been reading other posts in this forum that folks have been rooted, superSU installed and the update has completely crashed their N7. ANy info would be greatly appreciated.

I've noticed slower charging since the 4.2 update too - did a quick Google search and landed here. Using the same genuine Asus charger and generic cable that I did before the update, and I would agree with the roughly 35% slower estimate.

Are you using the new Daydream feature (you can find it in the display settings). If yes this may be the cause of slower charging, because it doesn't turn of the display.

Daydream is off.
Tbh, now it seems to have settled down i think maybe charging time is pretty much the same as it was. The whole debacle seems to be a complete non-event in hindsight!

No Daydream for me.

Mine is stock and unrooted. After the update I'm having the same charging issues. Incredibly slower charging. It's been plugged in for 6 hours now and it's at 80%. I did play a bit of pandora for about 30minutes but it was still plugged in. Other than that I haven't touched it other than to check the level. I turned daydream. Let's see if that help though I doubt it.

i think when you install the 4.2 update it does a battery stat wipe. this could produce the battery jumping from 16%-0% i reset the battery stats on my gt-i9003 the other day charged, its went from 100% - 40% instantly after about 2 charge cycles it should go back to normal.
it would also explain the battery seeming to take longer to charge, its just the voltage counter resetting itself. it might even in some cases charge faster....then run out quicker....
charge- discharge about 3 times and it should go back to norm.:good:

still bro i wouldnt use any charger expect the asus one, phones maybe i mean i always use other peoples chargers,or pickup the wrong end from my snake-pit of charger cables hanging under my tv unit. but for tabs....nah lol

Agreed, phones seem to be more universally compatible when it comes to charges.
Charge a tab with the wrong charger n you'll make up with a melted Nexus 7

i think its a part of certain regulations now that mobile phones needs to have an internal capacitor/transformer to make sure of this problem, as people usually run out of charge on the go and use other chargers as long as the connector fits and it begins charging, most of us including me are probably guilty of plugging a charger in, seeing its charging and thinking *yay it works fine* walking away and not really understanding what slow-fast damage can be caused to the device/battery.
for tabs 30% i would say dont have this feature:good: especially the Chinese ones. ? <no racial offence intended> you guys know what im on about.

My Nexus 7 worked great before upgrading to 4.2. Now it can't charge while I'm using it... The battery just goes up and down as I'm surfing the web, if I load a lot of pages, it goes down, if I read a lot, it goes up... But if I try to watch a floating video while surfing the web, it just goes down... There is definitely a problem! Here is a screenshot... I'm using the original charger and cable...

Wiping battery stats does absolutely nothing that affects reported battery charge level. That wives' tale was long ago debunked by a member of Google's Android team. The one and only thing you are wiping is a list of apps that have operated on battery since unplugging after the last complete charge. This in no way, shape, or form affects reported charge or has any effect on battery life whatsoever.

actually the battery stats ARE WHAT THE GOOGLE DEV SAID is what gives you accurate readings it doesn't increase your battery life . i never said that it will, so please don't police me,.

That is, it is solely used to compute the blame for battery usage shown in the "Battery Use" UI in settings. when you flash a new firmware, the system must calibrate as there are no previous readings from the bstat file right?.,these are the readings that help the system produce the reported battery charge. its what it does to give you those readings, i was guiding the above member to wait and run a few cycles for readings to be more accurate i never said his battery was dead.
kinda why pretty much EVERYONE mentions after flashing a new firmware on most device they have a few days of battery "up-n-downs"= counter reset/data collection/last battstat file wiped.

Read her entire dissertation, and you will see that it does not pertain to reported charge level. She explicitly states that batterystats.bin has no bearing on reported charge level. Interesting that you left out the portions of her post immediately prior to, and immediately following, the part of her post that you quoted... you know, the ones where she states, and then restates, that nothing in batterystats.bin affects the reported charge level? Also, the reason the battery seems more stable a few days after flashing new firmware is the kernel itself settling, not the OS.

Battery flat over night/ phone shut down with strange battery usage (screens iside)

I have samsung galaxy s2 just over a month or so and i have big problems, due to battery. I know this is common issue on this device.
Until now i try to recalibrate battery like that, no hard reset. The phone it;s new and it had ICS 4.04 installed on the first place.
1) drain all of your battery untill phone shuts down
2) turn on and drain battery until phone shuts down ( repeat until you are unable to turn the phone on- this step is very important because we need to drain the battery competely)
3) take the battery out and wait 5 seconds or so and put it back in
4) Charge the battery while the phone is off
5) when the charge is 100%, take the charger off then charge again to get 100% again
6) turn on your phone and enjoy your new battery
Once i try to take the battery out after charge, and wait over 2 minutes. I know this is a common issue of s2, but i have some screens, maby someone had similar problem.

The batteries in these phones can't be calibrated per se. Just use it normally for a bit. The peaks and troughs in your battery graph are because you're clearing the fuel gauge data. Mine would drop from the 73% I'm on now, to about 14% if I cleared the fuel gauge chip data, until it relearnt its settings. Just charge normally and use it for a few days, it will sort itself out.
If not, new battery.

Im having the same problem. Tried swapping batteries with another S2, recalibrating the battery and even installed another rom, same problem persists. The phone will auto switch off after a few hours of not using (overnight especially), and batter will drain like mad when it happens. Brought the phone back to samsung for repair now.

I'm currently having the same (really annoying) problem. My international GS2 is less than a month old and uses the latest official firmware on ICS. It happens almost daily -- or should I say nightly? The phone has at least 60-70% of battery left by the time a go to sleep. When I wake up in the morning, it's completely depleted. My stats look exactly as in the screen-shots in the first post. I'm always charging/using it "normally" but it hasn't sorted itself out.
I don't really know how to solve this and it's frustrating. The Internet has mixed "feelings" about the solution(s)... However, same as with my battery issue, I'm looking for something more stable and reliable.
Am I missing something? Does anyone know the exact cause and how to fix it?

Hello, I took the phone to a local service (pointed by Samsung from my country) and they replaced my motherboard and another pice of hardware....something in the recharging sistem, i dont know details. I think there is a "lot' of bad motherboards... people form the service call it a generic name.
In conclusion, the problem was the motherboard, not battery. I have recovered the device from service one day ago, if i'll experience any problems... i'll get back with details.

Battery charge values

Hi all!
I've some strange problems with mt nexus 4 battery values.
Today i had 59% of battery and i plug it to the original charger. After 2 hours i saw the battery with 100% charge value. OK. Nothing wrong here. I rebooted the phone and after that i had 84% of battery.
This is happening almost every time i charge my nexus 4.
I had stock rom with franco.kernel updater. Now i have paranoid Android with The same kernel.
Any idea about this?

Have you been dirty flashing a lot?

your battery reading needs to be recalibrated.... Charge full than use until it shuts down...than charge again fully, at 100% reboot phone & connect to charge again.....
You also can try "BatteryRepair.apk" from market..most of the time it helps to recalibrate..just install, open & follow on screen instruction....

Not really. Just rooted the phone 3 weeks ago and i was with stock + franco.kernel updater till 1 week ago. Then changed to Paranoid Android + Franco.kernel.Updater.

I'm trying this right now. At 1h07am the battery had 0%, so i connected to the original charger and did go to sleep. When i woke up, it had 100%. I rebooted the phone, connected the charger again and the phone had 90% (This at 8am). 2 hours later the phone is at 97%.

You also can try "BatteryRepair.apk" from market..most of the time it helps to recalibrate..just install, open & follow on screen instruction....

I had the same issue with my previous nexus 4. Did you ever get your screen/display changed? Or do you charge your phone overnight? Do you rely on USB charging a lot? If any of those answers is YES, its probable that your battery has gone bad (as mine had)

I always thought this problem was related to rom development but I'm not sure. It happened to me with CM11 at the very beginning in november, and then it just stopped. Since January I'm on slimkat, at first it didn't happen and then for a few weeks i noticed the same problem you have, now everything has been fine again for the last two weeks.

I had changed my display and i charge over night.
I've tried the calibration 2 days in a row (battery at 0%, then charge till 100%, reboot, charge till 100% again). Yesterday i had 90% after the reboot. Today i got 91% after the reboot.

I'm gonna try that app. I rebooted the phone around 9am and now is almost finishing the charge. The battery lasts till tomorrow with my normal use of the phone, but i tough strange that every time i rebooted the phone, i lose battery % :s

Just try avoiding the charge to 100%->reboot->charge to 100% again for a few days.
Don't let it discharge till 0%, connect the charge when you have 1%-4% left and let it charge till 100% with the phone on, and then use your phone normally.

Please go through this thread. A couple of other members (myself included) finally deduced that if you ever have your display changed you NEED to get your battery changed as well. Trust me on this, get your battery checked once. It WILL be bloated. Also, if upon restarting there is a break in the battery graph and there is a significant drop/rise in battery level, that is another indicator that your battery is going.

I've been reading that thread but for example, what happens to me it's nothing compared to the first topic of that thread. I only miss sometimes 10% after restart, sometimes 5%, sometimes nothing. From what i understand, in that thread most of users with battery problem had like 80% and after reboot they only had 2%, or 0%. Thats different i think, but i'm not expert on this subject

Try Battery Monitor Widget from the Market - you can see what current the phone is pulling, and if indeed full charge is reached. There are also calibration tools inside - the app calculates the real capacity of the battery, for example. If it's a long way from 2100mAh it would be a sign you need a new battery.
Though like everyone else, I think it´s a software problem. With previous Android phones I had to be careful calibrating, flashing etc. With the N4 I've had no such issues in the year I've had it. That app can help you sort out battery calibration though.

Can you tell me The dev name? Got 2 battery monitor widgets :s

This looks normal, although if you see a break in the battery graph and huge drop/rise in battery then its definitely done for. However its not the case with your phone, so relax

Well this evening i left the phone with 60% of battery and at 7am the battery was death. Just ordered a new one. I've only one problem. I dont have any plastic screw to open it. I've the torx t5 screw only.
Any advise to the new battery?
