So, after about a month the charging port on my car dock broke out of the dock, making it pretty much useless. I figured I'm going to try to just find a cheap dock somewhere else that I can use and can just plug a normal charger into the phone. The one thing that the official car dock does, which isn't done on cheap universal docks was that it had a magnet which would trigger car mode in the phone. After a bit of searching, I finally found the spot using a small magnet that I found at work. What is most interesting about the magnetic trigger is that based on the polarity of the magnet, it can activate either the car dock or the desktop dock. Right now I've just got one magnet, and I don't know the polarity on it, but it works. I have uploaded a picture with a small piece of tape on the spot where the trigger is. I'm not sure how strong the magnet needs to be, but it may need to be a bit stronger than the average refrigerator magnet. I'm probably going to go buy a few and some super glue and see what I can do as far as a homemade dock.
Good find

Well they are in Canada (I think). And there is a Richmond Hill in Canada.
EDIT: And @flashallthetime is from Canada.
Speaking of car mode, anyone able to activate car/dock mode simply by touching their Moto X in a certain way? Sometimes I'll pick it up or simply shift/change hands and some type of mode is somehow activated where the screen darkens and displays a clock. It happens somewhat infrequently and I'm never able to replicate it... I don't even own a car or desk dock, let alone put it in one... it always happens by hand and always accident.

I have a moto skip and can easily put the phone into car or desk mode with it.. If you line the end of the skip up with the sim card tray and put the small magnet just past the edge of the phone, smooth side activates desk mode, suede side turns on auto version.
Looks like this can be done with any magnet. Just tried with a random one I had laying around and it enabled car mode.

I don't think it does. Assist will announce incoming calls and texts, but that's not the same as car mode. I don't see any real benefit to car mode any longer since android no longer changes the behavior of the home button when in car mode.
For me, I don't see the benefit of desk mode either, since Motorola insists on ignoring the orientation sensors and displaying the clock in portrait mode regardless of the device orientation. I had the opposite problem with my Bionic - in the car dock it would only display in landscape orientation, even if the phone itself was in a portrait orientation.

Yes, it does.
Car Mode can also auto-launch a Car Home application (such as Car Home Ultra); unfortunately, as mentioned, Android will not relinquish control of the home button to a Car Home Launcher, which limits the usefulness of such a UI.
I am really excited to learn about these magnet sensors. That's really cool. I hope that Motorola creates their own docks. And if they don't, I certainly will create my own.
Thanks for the information.:good:
Put a Neo button magnet on the back of my Slip grip car mount and it works great. Now I have an NFC tag stuck to the mount for unlocking the phone and the magnet turns car mode on. I also found the old OG Moto Droid car mode apk and I'm using that instead of Car home Ultra...I like the simplicity of the old car mode.
I bought some 1/8" by 1/16" Warhammer magnets on eBay and cannot for the life of me get Car Mode to activate. Anyone have any issues or know what I might be missing?
Wish we could set something up to allow us to launch a certain app when moto assist activates the driving mode. Silly, you can launch a music app but no app of choice. That would allow us to eliminate the magnet all together.

I have thought of a way, at least for me and how I use it, as a workaround that hasn't been tested, but should work fine.
With Tasker, I was going to setup a profile that 2 things have to happen to trigger it. One, phone is plugged into car charger. Two, headset is plugged in (my aux input on my car). Once these 2 things have happened together, not just separately, I will trigger Car Mode to activate, which will then run Car Home Ultra. I think this will work out great for me with how I use it.
I just got the Moto X (republic wireless) and love the device so far but one thing is bugging the hell out of me : the haptic vibration every time I use active display
I've gone into settings -> active display or settings -> sound, but see no option on how to turn off the vibration every time active display comes on and I press on the screen
Also when you press the actual power button to turn on the display so you can then unlock the device it doesn't vibrate.
If anyone knows how to turn off this first world problem I'd appreciate it
p.s. Yes... I already know I'm OCD
AFAIK, this has been talked about and its not possible to disable the vibration....yet
Is this a Republic Wireless thing? I have a custom Moto X and it does not vibrate when I use active display.
My Verizon Moto X aways vibrates when I unlock from active display.

I have the t-mobile version as well. Maybe I'm mistaken and it does vibrate when swiping down. I checked and it does have a very slight vibration when swiping down on the notification icon. It's a very soft quick vibration. So soft that I did not notice it. It doesn't bother me. The vibration in my Moto X is not that good.

My Verizon Moto X is very subtle with the active display. It's delightful as far as actual feedback goes but then again I hardly notice it. I'm confused whether it's me or different Moto xs being different, though I doubt that. The vibrate is a vibrate though it's more of a rumble.

Again, I get nothing near this that sounds like a different phone to me. Mine is set to vibrate and ring but it wouldn't bounce off a counter that's ridiculous. I've been awoke by vibration calls before but the phone doesn't 'move' on my nightstand.

I know a few people said they disabled all vibration options, but there are a bunch. One to check might be under security settings for haptic feedback (you can get it when you enter your PIN) and also the haptic feedback for the softkeys. Even if some are OFF, try toggling them on and back off again.
there's no setting for this. I've turned off every vibration setting possible.
Interesting, I never have that issue with my republic wireless moto x. I do get a vibrate and active display comes up if I have a new notification though.

So there's two ir at the bottom and one at the top. When I wave my hand by the top ir it wakes up the moto display but when I wave it by the bottom ones nothing happens? I do see the red or lights on them. But are the bottoms ones supposed to be for something els.
Or Is there a certain way of motion?

From playing with the sensors it looks like the bottom set only respond to the reach gesture. The top one only responds both reach and wave. Seems deliberate

I've just bought a Moto X Play, and it did take an hour or so to get used to the swipe-the-dot to unlock it, that's because I was swiping in the wrong direction lol.
But seriously, just pick the phone up or pull it out of your pocket to check or swipe.
anyway, i dont know why it seems so weird?
The sensors are so usefull and comfortable and phones get continiously improved, that i am very surprised about it.
If all improvements were neglected and seemed strange, i would have stayed on my Sony Ericsson P900...
On my Moto G Lte and Moto X Play using Gravity Screen with only proximity sensor uses here on both phones only 0,2-0,3% a charge according to Gsam. Other options in that app like movement use a lot more battery so have that disabled in that app.
Now screen off: put device face down on table, etc. Or put in pocket or bag.
Screen on: pick faced down device up. Pull out of pocket/bag. Or wave over proximity sensor next to top speaker grill on the right.
As extra screen off without using power button I have set: slide up home button=Greenify+lock screen. Double tap home screen and/or status bar with Apex or Nova launcher. A sleep button in Quick Setting and Power Tools.
Moto's lighting up Active Display was also far to short for me. But more irritating was the so often unneeded lighting up of display and keeping device awake according to Wakelock Detector. When device in bag or pocket while walking or driving. Putting glass on table. Moving leg in bed. Even when heavy trucks drive trough the street where I work.
So now using Moto Ambient display. Only lighting up screen after missed call or text. Idle drain is now less than wirh Active Display.

I am waiting for my Moto Play...
If i dont like it in the first month i will just return it! Let's see.
Received my Moto X yesterday. First impression compared to my Moto X 2014, is that Play does not have the character and style of 2014 model.. And with no wave to wake or double tap, I feel that I went years back, in a negative way... At the current levels of mobiles phones, if you dont put the two above at least put a fingerprint sensor.
I will test it for 10 more days, but first feelings are negative. On the positive side is the wonderful camera!

Hey guys, I just got the phone today. Usually the first thing I do is to shake the phone to see if there is any unexpected noise.
UNFORTUNATELY ... It has. The way I shake it is to hold the bottom half and use the top half like a fan. It sounds like a plastic piece that keeps bumping.
Then I tried to hold some parts tight, but the noise was still there. I wasn't able to find the cause.
Any ideas? Thanks! If it's common I will keep the phone, otherwise I'm gonna return the phone before it's too late.

OK. I think it is the camera module.
The original sound is harsh (just like plastics bumping into each other) , but when I turn on the camera and shake again, the sound is smoother.
So the phone is working as it should but for some reason a person wants to shake it?
It's probably the camera module..try shaking it while the cameras on and see if it still makes that sound.
But really shaking a phone is pretty dumb.

Same thing here. It is the loose volume buttons (not really loose). Just hold them and shake it, no sound.
Try again without SIM tray... Definitely the crackle is louder with it.
Removing it, only left camera module noise, but you should be exaggerating the shake
