Hello,
I just got a gs4 and am planning on rooting it so that I can tether. Other than that I have no plans for other uses of rooting like custom roms, etc. I was wondering if I should stick to 4.2.2 and root and add tether to that, or if I should udpate to 4.3 w/ mja and then root after that. It seems there are some issues with upgrading and my main concern is a simple, stable, rooted phone that will tether. So, should I just root the stock 4.2.2 or update then try rooting? I was going to use the video tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257101), I presume this will work on either build?
Thanks!
Im in the same boat should I or not ??????

To be honest you can't go wrong if you are going to update and remain stock rooted with the hot spot mod..Although if you look around the threads you will see that there is a way to update and keep the MF9 bootloader. The reason for that is that MJA 4.3 incorporated the Knox Security which triggers a flag therefore voiding your warranty. I myself am not much of a custom rom man although I do flash them from time to time to check them out,nor do I care about voiding any warranties...

What exactly do you mean......???
I'm still on MF9 with 4.2.2. and r x-11 from negalite and I'm so far behind on the updates I don't know where to start. I tried to upload a link and got 2 viruses so I gave up.......is 4.3 worth it? what are the benefits, etc???
Biggest thing for me has been smoother UI and better battery life than MF9. Also Galaxy gear support is there now if you have a Galaxy watch. If not then it's not much use.

I was wondering if a new method to install the last OTA was out. I didnt feel comfortable doing the methods I saw before. Like doing a backup then going stock then reinstalling root. Im hoping there is a apk file and only needing to install that and be done. I looked and couldnt find anything but that is probably my fault. Lol

Easiest way is to download the firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43418277 then download the app mobile odin from the play store. Then use the app to flash the tar file and then you are on the mf9 baseband and firmware. Then flash the mf9 rom and you have the entire OTA update.

Seriously? If you are rooted. Just flash mf9 stock rooted ROM.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 4
Like windows, the best way is to do a full install and not an upgrade. Use PC Odin to flash the official full mf9 md5 tar. Reroot it. PC Odin seems to do a more thorough job than mobile Odin pro app. IMO, back up everything then do a full flash. The file is like 2.2gb. Yes that patch upgrade might work but you will have better performance and less problems if you do a full install tar.md5. I haven't messed with the full zip cwm flash, so I can't vouch for it. I have done what I explained and noticed better performance than just taking the update file. Yes it's more work but I, and a few other people, agree it's worth the extra time spent. Titanium backup can help speed things up, but doing the full job is better IMO.

Flashing the rom does not give you the modem/firmware.

Bet he was referring to this method or similar: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357471
Which IMO the steps listed by crawrj in post #2 is still the easiest/fastest way to get to stock rooted MF9. But to each his own.
Yeah, I was ready on the mf9 rom, so just downloaded the firmware tar and used mobile odin for that. Haven't noticed any performance issues or anything, although I have nothing to compare it to other than different roms.

Ok. Here is what I have done and where I am at. First off I consider myself a noob. I am rooted with odex. I used the method from qbking77. My build was mdl on both lines under about phone. No issues there at all.
So last night I downloaded the MF9 zip file. Not the ones from craw. I used oden. I had to update the one file in note pad. I then put the MF9 file in the pda field on odin and installed. It installed and said passed. Now under about phone the build says MF9 and the other is mdl. No biggie there. Now the new rom is not taking. Im getting the stupid knox message and will delete that. My wifi is not working. I did read that a guy flashes the new rom and kernel and everything was fine. I go into twrp to flash the rom but cannot find it. I am assuming it starts off with mf9 in file name. This is where I need help and that help dumbed down for me. I just want the app to sd and the camera update.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
To get WiFi to work you just need to.flash a new kernel. Go with agat or ktoonz. You need to be on MF9 based ROM to have the apps to SD and the camera update.
To update your baseband you need to flash the update modem zip. I'll try to get you a link.

I've had bad luck with every custom kernel. Some, after flashing, the phone heats up and won't cool down. All of them seem to make my keyboard flip out.
For using Mobile Odin pro, it finished the flash much faster than PC Odin, so I wonder if it did everything properly. With my previous phone, e4gt, it wouldn't flash modems. I don't know if it works or not with this phone. I haven't tested. Tested meaning purposely flash a md5 with a different baseband to see if it actually changed it.
Let me see if I can say this better cause I am a noob. I am running odex rooted. Basically stock. I want MF9. I installed MF9 and it shows that under about device. Now when the phone boots it is still running 4.2. 4.3 is not running. When i finally got 4.3 to run all my apps and everything was gone. I freak out and installed a backup so now im back to 4.2. Now on 4.2 and 4.3 my wifi is not working. So what I need help with is getting 4.3 to run and my wifi to work.

What the heck are you talking about? 4.2.2 is the only software available for the Sprint S4. The MF9 update does not update your android version to 4.3. It is just a service update to touch wiz to improve performance and add some features. 4.3 android is a work in progress on our phones and not 100% functioning.

What he said. What specific rom are you trying to install? If it's Touchwiz, it'll only be 4.2.2. Which recovery are you using?

[SPH-L720] CF-Auto-Root
Sorry, I'm doing all this copy paste on the phone.
Has anyone Rooted the new Stock Firmware 4.3 MJA? I have tried Cf-auto root a few times and it appears to work but SU App is not installed and there are no root rights for apps. This is the Full Stock firmware that was just released a few days ago. i had successfully rooted mja on the ota update but flashed back to stock with this new firmware and cant seem to root it.

Have you tried going into the play store and manually installing the SU app after rooting and updating the binaries? Could be a fix, but someone with better knowledge could chime in and correct me if I'm wrong...

And thanks for reporting a solution.
I have my phone rooted so I can use the hotspot feature and I have no problems with it. When the OTA update came I expected it to kill root and I was prepared for that also. The problem is when the phone reboots and begins installing the update, it ends with an error. It doesn't say what the error is. I'm just wondering if the error might be root related or phone related. Anyone else seeing this problem?
Root related. There is a thread to how to update MJA with MF9 boot loader I HIGHLY recommend that of you truly want to update.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
I think your issue is the hotspot mod add to why the update is failing. But I agree with above, I'd go the update route that gets you the update minus the Knox bootloader

My phone is working real good now, good battery life, no dropped calls, etc. I wonder if updating is really worth the effort? I'll have to see what advantages 4.3 will give me. Thanks for the tip on the above thread.
Yes, any modded files in the system partition(hot-spot mod) will cause the OTA to fail. Also, you must be on the stock recovery.

Hey guys new to the S4 thread, just updated from the S2 decided to go with this over the N5 because of a few features. I plan to root my device, but need a bit of help. I'm on 4.2.2 and wanted to know how should I go about rooting? Should I update to 4.3 then root or root on 4.2.2 thanks!

Staying on 4.2 is highly recommended. The Knox bootloader on 4.3 is no good. If you really want 4.3, go here and follow the instructions to stay on the MF9 bootloader.

All I can say to help is that I just rooted and installed CWM yesterday from 4.3 and all seems well. I say update, then root as the devs for this phone will stay on top of update issues anyways.

I personally don't care about being able to go back to MF9 anyways. I did the OTA to 4.3, rooted it and put Sac's ROM (4.3 edition) on it and do not regret it at all!! 4.3 is snappier and I get amazing battery life. Just my 2 pennies though! Hopefully we get 4.4 by January-February... definitely hopefully before Valentines Day.

Check this out ....ONE CLICK TOOL....so easy and nothing easier than this on MF3 or MK2 firmware......Trust me.....what u got to lose? but u losing full control of your phone when u update to MF3 or MK2. All u need to do is press 1.2.3 etc....ROOT your phone....INSTALL CUSTOM RECOVERY...INSTALL CUSTOM 4.3 ROM and your problem solved with galaxy gear.....:good:....If u don't like it flash to stock....#5....wolla back to MDL stock.....and then maybe we can do some business....( i trade mine plus 64Gb Sd Card )......
I can't tell if OP is the real deal or is trolling us hardcore. My eyeballs almost bulged out reading the 'what so special about MDL' line?
