cant get into hidden menu - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have edited the efs file to say on (capitol letters), but the dialer codes still don't work.
mj7 firmware, rooted, beans ROM etc, etc.
WTF am I missing here????

Are you sure it says on? I tried root explorer but the change wouldn't stick. I then tried root browser and had no problems after.
Galaxy Note 3, HTC Rezound, HTC Evo 3D, HTC Evo, HTC Touch Pro 2, LG Voyager

Did you reboot after you made the change?
I used Root Explorer

Root you Galaxy Tab - It Works!

Taken from the Captivate from forums. The rageagainstthecage method works:

I have rooted the Tab using this one click method.
How do you have the Tab? Your using a prototype or something?
Got it from Italy. It is being sold there right now. I can refer you to an eBay seller who ships internationally if you like (via pm only)

I'm confused. Where is the info to root the Tab and my Captivate with the one click method. I don't see any instructions, links, etc. Did I miss something? Please pardon my ignorance. I'm new to Droid. Ditched my iPhone. Yay!!
not working for me
it seems, the one click root will work, but it does NOT.
superuser app is installed by oneclick windows exe, but if i start titanium backup, it asks for super user rights, but the super user app shows an error message.
"NO ROOT RIGHTS! sorry"
i got my samsung galaxy pad yesterday in milano/italia with stock rom.
useful hints?
Universal androot will not work, too.

Titanium now works and is green listed in superuser app.(I HAVE INSTALLED THE BUSYBOX INSIDE TITANIUM )

The root method works.
You might need to try more than once, but it works.
Great work guys.
Once the Tab hits general release it might be worth re-posting the root method in it entirety in here, so that there we can keep Tab related root discussion in this forum rather than cluttering the Captivate one.
could you pm me the info?
working great here.... Thank you very much

Did it. I think that you have to install Samsung Kies first, to be able to recognize the Tab correctly for exploit to run.
For me this solved the situation.

Cannot root AT&T GT, with z4root

I just picked up my AT&T Galaxy tab, brand new. When I tried to install the z4root.apk file with the filemanager, I got a message:
"Install blocked. For security your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android market"
What gives? Three days ago I was able to use z4root to root T-Mobile's Galaxy Tab.
Is this device "locked" onto Market and how do I fix that without root?
The options are setting and cancel. Settings take me to "applications" and "development" is to to "allow mock locations" - but it does not make a difference.
PLEASE help.
Thanks
There is perfectly good z4root in the market, you don't have to sideload it.
i used it on my sprint tab and it didnt give me read / write access to system folder

you should remount the /system partition with rw access if you want to write there.
If it dont work the first time turn off the Tab and try again

Unfortunately Z4root was removed from the marketplace (again) yesterday. It was there in the morning but gone by the time I received my AT&T Galaxy Tab in the afternoon.
Does anyone know if Sideload Wonder Machine might work with Z4root on the AT&T GT, or another way to get Z4 on my Tab?

att tab blocked 3rd party apps need to use one click or flash euro rom on first
Off to work, I will give one click a try when I get home-thanks
ive tried that , ive used adb and root explorer neither of which actually give me access, adb just fails and root explorer says its r/w but everytime you do something it says its done but if you refresh the directory its still the same. I tried z4root, superoneclick root none seem to work I even restored my tab and started over but still no r/w access. This is my first attempt at rooting so maybe im doing something wrong but from what i was told it seems im not
I think you need to allow "Unknown Sources" under Application Settings. Try turning that on and see if it allows you to install.
Thanks
OneClick is working fine.
Please confirm, but I believe the issue is that AT&T has disabled sideloading, where T-Mo and other carriers have not.
I downloaded z4root last week but did not get around to rooting the Tab. Are we now saying that even though I have app, it will not work due to fact that it has been removed from Marketplace?
Will try the root when I get back home, but it sounds like AT&T Tab users are hosed for now.
- GadgetGuy
[edit] - rooting with z4root worked fine. As long as you have it, all is good.
I have an at&t tab and no issue for me since i installed the euro firmware anyway. Up yours at&t!!!

change lock sound

I had recently changed the lock sound on the Mytouch 4G and I cant remember how to do it, I remember using the terminal emulator and running a couple of commands but I cant remember.
Does anyone know the commands to copy something to the root of the phone.
Also, phone is perm rooted
just use root explorer
It comes back and says that it is a read only, so does that mean that the perma root didnt work?

I went through the screens on the Root Explorer and I am able to do R/W on the root but when I go into system/media/ui it wont let me change it from R/O to R/W, when I did it earlier today I ran it through the terminal, the reason its gone is because I only had the temp root and it repaired itself when I restarted my phone
my phone does not even make a lock or unlock sound.... the option is selected in sound settings and the volume is up, but no sound is made....
I tried some other commands and still a no go, does anyone know the command to mount the drive and move the file over

GREATEST INSTRUCTIONS EVER! - How to ROOT your Samsung Galaxy Tab

There are many guides out there on how to root your Tab, but I wanted to create one that explains the process in extremely detailed instructions to help new comers. Most guides I see have many ambiguities in them that would cause noobs to get stuck on and panic. I wanted to create a guide that makes them feel comfortable rooting their Tab, knowing that all the information is in front of them. (These instructions are meant for Galaxy Tabs that are running stock firmware that have not received any updates from their carriers and so forth. Specifically, these instructions were tested on newly bought Tabs from T-Mobile USA)
The Samsung Galaxy Tab can be rooted quite easily using an application (app) called z4root. The app can be downloaded here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953 (Scroll down to the end of the FIRST post and you'll see the file under "Attached Files"
This guide will help you root your Tab using this app. The instructions that I will be providing are EXTREMELY detailed and will help anyone new to rooting accomplish this on their Tab(s) quite easily. Make sure to follow my instructions carefully so you don't miss anything and I guarantee you'll be successful. Let's begin!
1. Download the z4root app from the link above either from your Tab or a computer (I suggest using a computer to download it. You'll have to create an account on the website if you don't already have one in order to download the file. Once downloaded, transfer the file to your Tab using the data cable that came with it. Select "Mass Storage" on your Tab when prompted. I suggest copying the file into the main directory of your Tab [Tab's internal storage, not microSD card])
2. Once the file is on your Tab, search for an application called "ASTRO file manager" on the Android Market. Download and install it.
3. In order to install the downloaded z4root app, you'll need to:
Go to SETTINGS > APPLICATIONS > and check "UNKNOWN SOURCES"
4. Launch ASTRO and use it to navigate to the downloaded z4root file. If you downloaded the file from your Tab, it should be in the "DOWNLOAD" folder. If you transfered the file using a computer, just navigate to wherever it is you copied the file to.
Once you find it, select it. Choose "Open App Manager." Now choose "Install."
5. Go to SETTINGS > DEVELOPMENT > and check "USB debugging." Launch z4root then select the "PERMANENT" root option. The application should take anywhere between 30 seconds - 1 minute to successfully root your Tab. Once it's done, it should reboot your Tab automatically. (NOTE: If z4root gets stuck on the screen that says "Rebooting..." for more than about 5 minutes, try pressing the HOME button on your Tab. If you can get back to the home screen, manually reboot the Tab yourself. If the Tab is completely frozen at the "Rebooting..." screen, force the Tab off by holding the Power Button for about 6 seconds, or until the Tab shuts off then turn it back on.
6. Once the Tab is back on, open up the APPLICATIONS drawer. You should see an app called "SUPERUSER." If you see this application, then you're done! You have successfully ROOTED your Galaxy Tab. Nice work! If you don't see SUPERUSER, go back and repeat Steps 5 and 6.
Congratulations, you're now free to modify your Tab in ways that will enhance it's speed and performance by a great deal. The next thing that you would probably want to do to your Tab is to flash (install) an EXT4 kernel. This will convert the Tab's proprietary RFS file system to the EXT4 file system, which will increase speed and performance by a lot. Once you do that, it will be time to flash a ROM that has enhancements and modifications built into it that meets your needs. Rooting and flashing these ROMs will help you get the most out of your Tab. Tutorials like this one for flashing the EXT4 kernel and custom ROMs will be coming soon. Stay tuned!
If you have any questions, please contact me here on XDA for further assistance. Good luck!
If you searched before posting, you'd have discovered that *nothing* you have posted here is new. It also doesn't work for some Tabs with later ROMs, and for this you would need to use SuperOneClickRoot, or manually apply the RageAgainstTheCage exploit.

Dave

It's true. Nothing new and it's not "Greatest"
Sometime we have to use the SuperOneClick.
Just for confirmation.

Agreed. If I could only get Kies to see my galaxy then maye I could actually try SuperOneClick.
Hello dear friend and thanks for the instructions.
However in my Tab there is no "Unknown sourc e" to enable. AT+T locked it for good.
My DInc has been flashed more than a Girls Gone wild camera man and I still wont do the GTab.....soo complicated and just not worth it at this point. I have a Sprint version and it has gotten no love, nothing worth trying at least.
There has got to be an easier way.

No Root for you
Okay, So I have tried to do the SuperOneClick and Z4Root, and neither work for my Verizon branded Tab. Rather upset as I would LOVE to uninstall the bloatware. I don't really want root access for anything other than that, and maybe a little overclocking action. Any word on anything new for rooting the Tab? Even this thread that is only a couple of months old seems "out dated" due to any recent updates from Samsung and the carriers.

[Q] Any way to root VM Intercept? Please help I've tried everything!

Hey people,
I've been trying for a while now to root my sister's Intercept (virgin mobile). I've looked all over the place and no method seems to work. Does anyone know of a way to do it?
I've tried:
z4root apk (said phone is rooted but su wasn't installed and all other apps said it wasn't, including root checkers)
intercept root apk (same as above)
SuperOneClick (latest version) (stopped in the middle and never completed, always fails)
Gingerbreak apk (just reboots the phone and doesn't do anything)
Any ideas? Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
The intercept root apk worked like cake for me. I would try doing a factory reset then using that apk first thing after rebooting. It doesn't work with FB01 (Sprint) Intercepts after a February 29, 2012 update, but it should still work with EC07 (VM).
This is the one I used: http://intercept-root.googlecode.com/files/InterceptRootV1-35.apk
Once you've used the app once and reboot your phone, open it again and if it worked you should see options to either unroot or install CM01 custom recovery (recommended if you want to flash roms onto it).
Good luck!
Gonna try it out when I get a chance. Thanks!
The z4root dont work on the intercept anymore. and the inerceptroot.apk on my phone would say that it was failed or what not and i would use root apps and they would still work (even without superuser)

Id just start from scratch and find a stock rom to flash. I used to have a VM intercept for a painful 2 years. Sometimes you just need to start over with a fresh rom.

lashed anything on the phone. Its actually started working like a normal intercept. Had it off for about 2 weeks then turned it on recently and works alot better. I'm pretty much using the phone as a play toy seeing what I can change and explore all the files to get a better idea about android. Intercept root
i have an intercept from VM and it was easily rooted with interceptroot.apk Google it, a safe copy will be found on sdx-developers website.
this should get you started, make sure you download the file with your phone, click the home button. Next, click the settings button on your phone, go to applications and then in the following menu, go to development and turn on usb debugging and use the back icon, next allow unknown sources in the menu you are now into again, and click the home button yet again.
Make sure you have some sort of file browser, I personally prefer the app "file expert" but others have their own preferences. (you can use any file tools, like: es file explorer(free), file explorer(free and paid), file expert(free and donate versions), root explorer(free and paid verisons). Anyways, go to your sdcard with the file tool, locate the folder called download, and tap the icon that says "intercept-root.apk" make sure its version 1.35!
You should be asked if you'd like to install, select install. *** NOTE: if you have an antivirus on your phone(whats the point?) you'll get a pup warning, it does not mean its a virus, just a Potentially Unwanted Program, which means that you might not want to install just because it will void your warranty.. if you don't mind, JUST IGNORE! ****
next, you will have a few options, might I suggest permanent root so you don't have to keep rooting your device, it will also have other options and install a handy icon inside your applications menu screen for safe keeping!
You should be all good to go, to find out, go to the google play store and download a program thats free called "root checker basic" It will let you know if your good to go or not.
That concludes the fast off the top of my head tutorial! happy rooting!
*** Update ***
This intercept root apk file also has the option to install the CM01 recovery mod (flash) if your into modding or wanting to flash the phone to a new network sometime (why????) you might want to use this too, make sure to read up on it, I personally have not done it and choose not to, at least yet.. This is important if you want to install roms, kernels (like crappy-kernel) and opens more features to your phone, but can render it into a paper weight if your not careful and PAY ATTENTION!
hope this helps everyone.
