I'm using Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.7.9 to root and flash a recovery but it never completes. It hangs when trying to run TWRP
Nexus 10
4.4, build KRT16S, bone stock
unlocked
- In NRT choose Root (with or without custom recovery)
- It reboots into fastboot OK
- it boots the temporary boot OK
- it pushes the root files OK
- it reboots into fastboot OK
- when it trys to temporary boot into TWRP fastboot says
"FASTBOOT STATUS - DATA007bf800" and hangs
NRT hanges and I have to force quit it.
I can reboot the Nexus by holding PWR for 5seconds. It's not rooted (of course). I can reboot to stock recovery just fine. The tablet otherwise works fine.
The problem seems to be when NRT tries to run TWRP.
Interestingly, even if I set NRT options to use CWM, it still tries to boot into TWRP.
Any ideas?

I did exactly as you only a couple of days ago. I plugged into a different USB port and it worked the 2nd time.
IT still though got into a bootloop (the graphics on the startup never stop) so pressed all 3 buttons many times then did a factory reset then was golden thereafter.
Good luck.

Did you have the "FASTBOOT STATUS - DATAXXXX" error?
I've seen tons of posts about "FASTBOOT STATUS - FAIL INVALID" messages, but that's not what's happening here. It sounds like a memory error, either a bad file read, or physical RAM error. I verified the hash on NRTs copy of TWRP, so that's not the problem.
I tried 3 different USB cables and 2 different USB ports. No help.
I'll try to manually sideload TWRP via Fastboot today, but am not hopeful.

So I've been doing for my 3 Android devices (N4, N7, N10), doing stock install of 4.2.2, 4.3, 4.4 and doing some benchmarks, so I've been doing loads of stock flash, root, some with / without custom recovery.
One combination, I can't recall which, which sounds most similar to yours, what I did was NOT have any custom recovery installed, a pure simply stock install, and then simple rooted it with NO custom recovery, then I could get past the problem similar to yours, I installed ROM Manager and let it install a customer recovery.
I have got the impression from the 3-4 stock installs I done last 4 days on my N10, that WUGS TWRP+N10 is not as stable as WUGS TWRP+N7 or WUGS TWRP+N4. It seems better either WUGS + N10 + no custom recovery, or that other one (Koush?). You can add custom recovery post setup so long as you're rooted, ROM Manager is what I used.
FYI having tried 4.2.2, 4.3, 4.4, then back to 4.3, i've settled on 4.4, and on all my 3 Android devices, each though with a different kernel - N10 doesn't have Franco but it also has USB driver issues (thanks Samsung and Google) but found a kernel which put them back in.
I sideloaded TWRP 2.6.3.1 via fastboot. Piece of cake. TWRP even asked to install SuperSU, which I did.
Nigel, I think you're right. There may be issues with NRT, TWRP 2631, and the Nexus 10.

HOLY COW.....I've flashed CWM, TWRP, and CWM Touch multiple times...nothing.
I changed USB ports and get it the first time.

Hi
I've searched for a solution but didn't find one for my problem so...
I was trying to flash an updated kernel through Kernel Manager application and then it said it cannot complete task and asked me to reboot system.
I then entered into the recovery and flashed the kernel manually.
When rebooted system I got the message "FASTBOOT MODE - NO BOOT OR RECOVERY IMG" in red at the top of the bootloader.
So naturally I thought maybe it lost the recovery so I went and flashed CWM recovery 3.0.2.5 (had 3.0.2.4 when all this happened) through fastboot and that went OK.
I then entered the recovery to make sure the recovery flashing went OK and pressed Restart system now.
But then it started the bootloader and the same message appeared "FASTBOOT MODE - NO BOOT OR RECOVERY IMG" in red at the top of the bootloader.
I repeated that process few times and same thing.
The strange thing is when I select "REBOOT BOOTLOADER" and it boots into bootloader I see "FASTBOOT MODE" in red at the top. But when I try to reboot the phose I see the message to the top again.
How can I get out of this?
Hi guys,
I've got the same problem, although I don't know if it IS a problem.
I'm running v7.0.0-NS and I'm going to upgrade to v7.0.3 ... just searching for instructions!!!
~AndrewGoldy
since I am able to enter the recovery Im trying to restore an earlier backup. Not sure it this will do anything since my problem is in the bootloader area.
If this makes my phone to start up normally then I really dont understand this.
*** I think that I've just fixed it ***
I opened up "Rom Manager v4.2.0.2", and then selected the option to "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
Once it had downloaded "ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.4", I selected the option to "Reboot into Recovery".
That worked.
It now says "Fastboot Mode" when I boot into the Bootloader.
Success!!!! (I think)
Well it just finished restoring the backup.
It seems it solved the problem on mine to since it passed the bootloader and the boot animation is on.
I really cant understand this.
I've done the same but the Recovery Stil nor Bootloader works. However it does say Fast boot mode now instead of no boot or recovery img. But still can't flash or back up a rom!
Correction i got it work after flashing to oldest recovery that was an option
I fixed this problem (Nexus S) by reverting to an older (3.0.2.4) CMRecovery, just go down to the last option "All ClockworkMod Recoveries" and Flash an older version (mine was not working with 5.0.2.0).
Hi! Anyoane can help me ?
I disconnected by accidently the USB cable while the phone was at the ClockWorkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0/-mounts and storage/-mount USB storage, and after that ( adb , fastboot and usb died).
I installed Stock OTA 2.3.6 I9023 for my Nexus S I9023. During the day phone closed and no longer wanted to open (even replace the battery). After more hours the phone is open , adb and usb works not for a long time after several attempts ( during this time I managed it to root and install CWM 5.0.2.0 back)
I flashed ICS Kwiboo v3 . After reboot the phone began to froze , and shortaly closed.
Because the phone will no longer open I tried in CWM all ( wipe data:fact, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, format/all ) .
Now if reboot system on CWM I have Fastboot Mode - No Boot or Recovery IMG
but if I reboot bootloader or power off when is opened is just Fastboot Mode .
Adb , fastboot and mount USB still no work. ( I have SDK 14 on windows7 installed, all the driver for Nexus S was updated).
Because the PC not recognized my phon I can't install another ROM or CWM.
( When USB cable connecting on the phone it's charge the battery only!).
Thanks for your advice!
No recovery img & fastboot devices -> nothing
Hi all,
When I try to access the recovery mode on my NS, I have the same "no boot or recovery img". I change my CWM version from last to 3.0.2.4 and another version too. Still, I can't access the recovery mode.
I installed the SDK to restore a stock recovery image I found, hoping to use fastboot (from the sdk + a standalone version I found before). But it won't recognize my phone (fastboot devices -> nothing). I installed the PdaNet for the Android 1.0 driver, and the Android 4.0 driver from the SDK. Still nothing, although "adb devices" apparently sees my phone.
I've spent my whole night on this. Without recovery I can't backup, and I can't switch rom (heard of this ICS rolling-out ? I'd like to have some flavour of it), I can't wipe or whatever.
Please can someone point me to a solution for fastboot to see the phone, or even better, to reinstall a recovery tool ?
Thanks a huge lot

I can help you but....
1. In bootloader mod ADB working ? (if not try back off battery for 10 min or more) and try again..
2. Your device is rooted ?
I was going to suggest trying to reflash the latest recovery again in CWM, but I think you guys said that hasn't worked.
Every now and then when I flash a new ROM this happens to me. I usually just flash an older version, then reflash the newest version and the Recovery works just fine.
Maybe try using a different recovery program?
it does work, many have done it already, see all the duplicated topics

1. I removed the battery for 10mn. When I come back to the bootloader "ADB devices" doesn't return a device, so it doesn't see my phone. But when switched on, it can see it.
2. Yes, it is. There is the SuperUser app, and when apps ask for root, I can allow or deny. And the lock state is 'unlocked'

I tried the latest, the oldest, the versions inbetween... nothing. I have the latest version of CWM and I reflashed the last Recovery from the app.
I can't flash another ROM, because I need recovery mode for that ; and my problem is that I can't access recovery indeed... :/ I feel like I need A to do B, and B to do A.
"No boot or recovery img": doesn't it mean that I should put some file somewhere ? I hope it would be that simple.
Do you have other ideas ?

I've tried several time, flashing different versions of CWM recovery. I've returned to bootloader -> recovery dozens of time and I still have the "no boot no recovery img". I'll try again.
All the threads which speak about it and mention to flash another rom -> yeah thanks, but I can't access recovery
Threads mentioning fastboot -> I tried with different drivers (including 1.0 and 4.0), but fastboot won't see/talk to my device
Do you see something else that I didn't try ?
---------- Post added at 02:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:33 PM ----------
I also tried this which seems to be a good step
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356319
Basically it says
adb shell
SU
flash_image recovery /sdcard/filename.img
But like the guy in thread, I have memory errors "mtd: read error at 0x00000000 (out of memory)" then write errors, then "failed with error: -1" and "error writing recovery"
It's ok now.
In case other it can help other people:
I tried again the PDAnet installation to get the android 1.0 drivers. (actually there is a binary called "install legacy usb drivers" which apparently worked well.)
Fastboot would detect my phone in bootloader mode.
So I could "fastboot flash recovery xxx.img" I first failed with a stock recovery, but for which I didn't know the exact reference and origins (I was stuck with the exclamation point in white triangle). As I couldn't find another stock recovery for Nexus S, I downloaded the CWM recovery from the website (not from the app), last version (5.0.2.0) and flashed it with fastboot.
It seems to work properly now, so i'm doing a rom backup, just in case for later, and I'll flash stock ICS
FYI: rom manager only caused me issues ; I don't know why Cyanogen uses it. Just use the recovery directly from recovery... Even CWM. just not Rom Manager.
Cheers and thanks to those who tried to help.

THANKS! This helped A TON!
I did the PDA installation again, and for some reason this seemed to fix my inability to access recovery.
Agreed on Rom manager, I updated CWM through rom manager and I believe that's what buggered up my recovery, as I have never had trouble accessing it before I did that.
But again, a big THANKS for that suggestion!
After I got my new nexus, I decided to root it. I used mskips toolkit with 4.1 and it worked like a beaut. But I can't for the life of me root 4.1.2.
Checklist:
Downloaded the drivers succesfully
Can enter ADB succesfully. Under device manager it says "Google Nexus 7 ADB interface"
Tried WugFresh's toolkit
Unlocked bootloader
Tried installing custom recovery (see below)
(Checklist to know what I have done, for people to help me and future people with problems)
The reason adding CWM or TWRP doesn't work is because the device can't be rooted. You need to be rooted to change recovery file names, and whenever I boot recovery, I get the dead android and a red ! (stock recovery).
When it sees if busybox is installed, and sends the command, it comes back negative.
I'm having the exact same problem -- generating the same set of error messages as you show at the top of your screen capture. I bought a new Nexus 7 32GB and updated it to 4.1.2 before trying to root it. At the time I hadn't read anything that told me this might be a bad idea. I figured -- update to the latest version then root it. I've tried changing how I have it connected (media or camera), what USB port I connect to, what USB cable I use, which boot options I select -- NOTHING makes a difference. I have gotten my bootloader to unlock, or so it seems, as I've got the unlocked padlock image during boot up. But I'm totally stuck on how to proceed to get root.

When you run wugs toolkit to root, does it reboot your nexus? I have not rooted a 32GB yet but I have done a 16GB on 4.1.2 factory image without any problems.
There is nothing different between rooting an 8/16GB unit versus the 32GB ones. Nor does 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 matter.
I bought a 32GB one a few days ago, upgraded to 4.1.2, and had the bootloader unlocked, custom recovery installed and device rooted in about 5 minutes.
The issues you are having are why I hate these "toolkits". They don't always work properly, and when they fail, the user has no idea what's going on. It's much better for people to actually perform the steps manually so that they understand what's going on behind the scenes. Because when you understand, you can better troubleshoot problems.
Based on the errors, it looks like the toolkit failed to remount /system as writable. As such, it couldn't push the APKs for superuser, nor make the su binary suid root. Which of course would break the rest of the install script.
It's a very simply process and doesn't need a toolkit. Use the android development toolkit tools adb and fastboot.
1) adb reboot bootloader
2) fastboot oem unlock
(select yes on tablet)
3) fastboot reboot-bootloader
(confirm bootloader is unlocked)
4) fastboot erase recovery
5) fastboot flash recovery <recovery.img>
(recovery.img should be a downloaded custom recovery file - CWM or TWRP, your choice).
6) Reboot into recovery
7) adb push <superuser.zip> /sdcard/superuser.zip
(superuser.zip should be whatever recovery flashable 'root' zip you want to use).
8) Using recovery, flash the zip file.
9) Reboot
10) Done.

I agree with you, the problem of the tool kits, I experimented two of then

Ok, guys. I tried every option on every forum and none of them worked so here I am.
I unlocked and rooted my nexus 4 using the Wugfresh toolkit v 1.9.3. Everything worked perfectly until I tried to flash Cyanhacker ROM and kernel at the same time. I factory reset my phone before doing that (wiped dalvik/cache etc.). In TWRP, it said everything was successful, however I got stuck in a bootloop and when I tried to factory reset again, I accidently wiped my OS as well (i know... i am a retard:cyclops. Now I can only go in fastboot and TWRP.Now, I tried to use Wugfresh toolkit to Flash Stock + Unroot while being in fastboot, but it states that "Fastboot device was not found". Suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
First of all check you have fastboot driver install for your Nexus 4.
After that, you can try to reboot again in bootloader and from fastboot command line write "fastboot devices".
If your device appear you can reimage your stock image.
If you could load TRWP recovery, from it you can use install from sideload to "reinstall" again the original or modify custom rom.
That's the problem, when I connect my phone to my PC, nothing happens. When i try to open device manager I dont see my phone or the Android ADB Interface.
it happened to me last week, use usbdeview (easily googled) to uninstall all your android related driver from it, don't forget to check the driver properties to delete the inf file also.
restart your pc and search then install universaladb driver (do some googley again) then try again. though last week my side here had to reinstall my xp from scratch to get mine working but i hope you aren't.
Nexus 7 2012 32GB wifi, Stock, Unlocked, Rooted, TWRP.
I am new to adb, but have used Wug's toolkit in the past. I attempted to sideload the Lollipop OTA zip through through Wug's toolkit. Everything was going well, but for some reason I got an error that stated that there was not enough room to install the update. I figured that was the end of that, but when I tried to reboot, it went straight to the stock recovery, and will not boot past that. Did some poking around in the toolkit, and found I didn't have fastboot anymore. (Also, I did not make a backup, stupid stupid, because I had recently wiped everything, and have the factory images downloaded). So, with the toolkit not getting me anywhere, I decided to try getting back to running through ADB. Read some tutorials, downloaded SDK, get that all set up so I can see where I am at. Command window, Type "adb devices", get "serial # sideload. Tried "adb reboot recovery", got no devices.
Probably should have just stopped but, since I knew I had USB debugging on, and all the newest drivers installed (just ran the toolkit) I figured why not try to sideload from here? Not enough Space again. Tried sideloading OTA 4.4.4(KTU84P) which is what I was running up to this point, and get unexpected contents error in "system/app/basicdreams.apk" "status 7".
Top of screen says:
Android system recovery (3e)
KTU84P
Long story short; Stuck in stock recovery, No Fastboot, Apply update from ADB works, but haven't anything to finish installing.
Thanks for any help, you guys are awesome, and give me way too much info for my own good, obviously.
Got back to working at this. WUG's toolkit fixed it. Just like every answer, in every thread with similar problems said it would. Using the flash stock +unroot and the soft brick/bootloop option. Since i was on Bootloader version 4.23, I flashed 5.0. Not sure what was different this time, as I tried the same process last night.
Anyway, anyone having the same troubles should give that a try.
so i feel like Ive tried everything.
tried to flash a rom and gapps in twrp and phone booted to warning screen with the yellow triangle.
passes that and then goes to google splash screen with unlock icon. and then repeats to the cycle.
i have tried multiple 6.x.x builds using skipsoft toolkit with no change.
i have installed twrp and tried to flash 6.x.x rom and 7.0.0 rom.
i have tried to flash stock NBD90X 7.0.0 using nexus root toolkit.
i have tried going into stock recovery and wipe data/factory reset
i have tried minimal ABD fastboot and running the commands manually.
All have failed to change the boot looping i experience.
my phone is unlocked.
computer can see it as fastboot devices
computer CANNOT see it under abd devices
i am able to install and get into TWRP using skipsoft tookkit.
i feel like i am running out of things to flash onto the device haha
any help is appreciated.

First, I'd recommend staying away from Toolkits, as you can't really see what's happening and diagnose issues. Since you've used fastboot/ADB commands, you know they are faster anyway. When you say your PC can't recognize your device in ADB, was your device in recovery? Make sure you're in recovery and you're ready to receive ADB commands. If you CAN see your phone with fastboot that means you're in the bootloader, whereas you have to boot into recovery to see your device via ADB.
Also, you didn't outline anything else you may have done. Did you restore from a nandroid with a buggy version of TWRP? Your issue sounds like the TWRP EFS restore bug (3.0.2-2). It effectively bricks your device, but there is a thread here that discusses it. Effectively you need to be recovery ADB mode and run a couple commands to delete your EFS partition and that will fix the issue.
More info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/im-stuck-google-logo-stop-reboots-twrp-t3452842
Make sure you've also installed the updated 3.0.2-3 TWRP as it will work with encrypted data and doesn't have the EFS bug.
