A question regarding wiping. - Omni Q&A

Another question. Can one dirty flash the nightlies? After all the hassle I went through with data, I'd hate to fully wipe and start over so soon. I'm using the Nexus 5.

Flash the original Rom via cwm or use odin... Then relock the bootloader. Just type OEM lock..

Although I agree with you all: he's certainly a troll, this being his first 2 posts doesn't tell us anything; if he was active on the forums he wouldn't ask these questions.
Now get out of here, troll...

Can you explain us a little? What do you mean a backup? You mean the rom zipped where you can flash with Recovery? Yes.
Anyone?

Are you referring to making a nandroid backup in recovery, or backing up the home screens and stuff for your rom from the AOKP settings?

Dude, you have to elaborate on what you mean by backup.
Do you mean what CharliesTheMan said? Or what jamesst20 said?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
he's most likely looking for the same thing that aokp has in the rom settings... and I do not know the answer to that because I don't do paranoia as it will destroia
but pretty sure he's talking about those special paranoia settings.

There is a pa backup in the settings menu, pa settings, backup and restore. Backs up the pa settings obviously

Sorry.. Got my drink on after I posted this. Yeah, like a complete back up and restore of all my home screens and settings when a flash an update..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I ran a couple aokp ROMs on my Gnex and they have an app that saves everything.. I guess I could use titanium, its been a while since I used it though. I don't think it saves home screens, does it?

Yes. It saves all the paranoid settings for each app. I don't think it backs up home screen layouts though, and it definitely doesn't back up apps or data. Usually I dirty flash updates to Paranoid though, so my home screens and apps aren't touched. I just wipe cache and dalvik, then flash the update and gapps. Then I restore my paranoid settings with the backup that we're talking about.

Make a Nanroid Backup, that will get you backed up everything you need.

Best bet is to install nova launcher or apex launcher, setup your screens how you like them, then back it up in the app. Regardless of what you flash you can restore your layout when you redo the launcher app.

Yes it runs very well. The only time I do a full wipe is when I'm changing ROMs. This strategy has worked well for me so far.

Just did it.. Everything seems to be working OK.. If you do a dirty flash, there really isn't a need to back up anything is there?
Thanks!

Well, like mamba_nz said, a nandroid backup can never hurt. I also use Titanium Backup to back up my apps and data.
But to answer your question, unless something goes wrong, no you shouldn't have a need to back up anything.

Kernel Question

This is just a quick question,
I am running 4.2 Jellybean on my Nexus 7, and wanted to flash a custom kernel. That supports 4.1.1/4.1.2 and the kernel hasn't been updated by the OP. So, if I flashed it, would me Nexus work? Would it be fine?
Thanks. -cburk
I think I heard that it will indeed work. I suggest you just try it, but first, make a nandroid!!!

Kernel is the same as boot image. If you're already encrypted then you need to flash ex with no force encryption selected. Then format userdata. You will have to flash kernel after wiping data to get tweaks back.
