[Q] Less screenspace after 4.4 - way to fix? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After updating to 4.4 I found that you can still turn off the Google search box on your screen but even with the service stopped and the box gone it no longer frees the space up so you can put app there or a widget. Does anyone know how to get that extra space back? It really messes up my layout when using HD Widgets.

Install a different launcher.

dell stage ui home widget

hi all
ive searched everywhere but could not find the answer to this problem. the home widget in the stage ui where the recent apps are also has a weather app in built (shining sun). it has been saying 'getting location' ever since i updated to froyo. it never gets my location (i dont want it to also). now is there a way to remove this part of the widget? i have deleted accuweather app from the system. i would like to remove this aspect of the widget also. please help
that would take an entire rewrite of the app. mine said getting location for a while too, dunno what makes it choose whether or not to work correctly. overall, im a little disappointed with the stage widgets. theres no config, and they dont seem well thought out. the home app only showing recent apps with no ability to place your favorite apps you want to launch quick on hand, whos brilliant idea was that? they would be a great idea if they didnt feel like they where done a bit half assed.
Cant agree more! Long press home button already does that.
A more useful widget will be to list most used/ favourite applications instead of to list recently used applciations.

[Q] Change home screen and layout?

When I switch on - it always goes to my library page.
How does one change the default home screen? I haven't found it.
Also - I would love to find a way to change the location of the three menu keys.
I'd really like to be able to browse in landscape mode but to have those keys along the right side of the screen.
There are 5 desktop screens, the third one (ie the middle one) is "home". So just move the library widgets to another screen and put whatever widgets you want on your home screen.
Regarding moving the 3 soft keys, no way to do that in stock jelly bean as far as I know,I think you have to be rooted.

Thanks for this. I was hoping there would be a way to designate the home screen as with the S3
Nova Launcher from the Play Store allows customizations, including how number of desktop screens and which is the default. Plus a lot of other features. No root required.

kodiak, how did u deodex it?
You don't need to deodex. Grab the 4.2.1-TabletUI.zip from the following link (Post 912) and apply in recovery. Laucher is messed up but Nova Launcher free works great.

you could also install paranoid android, where you can choose which layout (phone, phablet, tablet...) you wish to use, you can even set layouts for individual apps or app groups (e.g. Launcher + google mail in tablet mode, other apps stay phablet)

I am currently running paranoid androids latet rom, and the main thing I'm struggling with is that the 3 buttons (back, home, and the 3rd button that brings up recent apps) are centered, when I want them on the let side. Does the patch fix that?
Also, is there a way to remove the lock screen tiles? I think I saw other threads saying that this change was related to the lawsuit but didn't find anything that allows you to take those off. At the very least I'd want to change the font if I have to keep it.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

Yes the tablet patch takes the 2 seperate nav bar and task bar and puts them to the bottom like they should be imho.
I dont even run the lock screen so I cant answer that question.

In Paranoid settings, change the UI to Tablet UI (mid) and you'll have the navigation bar buttons to the left hand side like you want.
Also, the way to get rid of the lockscreen tiles is to install Lockscreen Policy.

Nexus 7 2012 Google experience launcher - landscape search bar location

Hi,
Is anyone using the new Google experience launcher (on KitKat 4.4), if so when you rotate the device so the home screen is in landscape mode do you have the top row of app icons hidden under the Google search bar.
I have cleared data and cache for the launcher and Google search app (the two apps needed for the new launcher) but still have the problem.
The search app is the official update from the play store and the launcher app I sideloaded.

I've been getting this issue as well. I believe in landscape mode, the search bar is not supposed to be visible (or at least not supposed to be a bar) and to fit in with the animation, it is supposed to glide off the top of the screen.
But I wouldn't know how to fix this.
new BUG!!

Help! Briefing Covers Home (AT&T S7 Edge)

I recently rooted my phone using Is in and had my own set of issues with that but am now unrooted to the best of my knowledge. However I am still running custom Rom from the root. Everything seems to work perfectly except for Samsung Pay which I tried to fix by flashing all new stock rom through Odin to no avail, but that isn't my problem. I noticed when moving apps around on my screen that the whole screen woukd go blank and I'd just be holding the app guessing where to put it. When trying to edit widgets there was no home screen, except for briefing, which hadn't been working. After turning briefing on and creating a new home page simply because I didn't want to deal with it and couldn't find help, I couldn't place any widgets due to the fact that they are on this phantom briefing home page already. When changing the grid for apps within the page settings, I can see the apps on the "briefing" page but that is the only way that I can see it all. If possible I'd like to wipe the widgets or something of the sort if there is no way to fix my pages. Please help me if you have any advice. I just want my phone working again.
I have imgur links for the screenshots but can't post them because this is my first post.
Are you using a custom launcher? If so, which one is it.
Resolved, sort of.

I am using the stock launcher, I have since fixed the issue through a factory reset and restore of apps. My advice to all S7 Edge rooters until the bug is truly fixed: after you get your phone rooted or unrooted, running custom rom, if you see that briefing is missing, create a new home page and move all of your apps one page to the right. Leave the original homepage, now on the left, blank and designate the one with apps as your main page by clicking the home icon. With the two home pages set up, go apply a theme. This should force the phone to locate all of the apps and "think" about them. For me this automatically placed briefing over the blank home page that is to the left. I hope that this helps anyone experiencing the same issue. Thank you for the reply and I'm glad to be a part of XDA
