Before I start, I will admit, this is not the simplest way to go about this but it worked - this is also meant as a bit of humor as I, like you, have spent countless hours trying to 'fix' my GPS and the posts on here are comical with people getting angry about alleged fixes.
Here Goes....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 1: Brick Phone - for everyone out there that is about to say "it is impossible to brick your phone"...go right ahead, say that, but just wait until you really do it. For those wondering what a truly bricked phone looks like, well, it is a phone that won't pass the AT&T screen on boot and attempting to enter Download or Recovery mode gets you a picture of the battery charging icon but fully dead and the spinning graphic not spinning
Step 2: Take phone to AT&T Handset Service Center (Thankfully we have one here and didn't have to do the mail in route)
Step 3: Exchange (under warranty - mind you, three guys all attempted to get into recovery mode and shook their heads with a look of "it is impossible to brick one of these" looks
Step 4: Take new phone outside, enable GPS
Step 5: Have lock in 3 seconds - now, for all of you who say "lock doesn't mean sh*t"...great point, my old one locked fast but had me driving in the middle of nowhere
Step 6: Drive with Google Maps and viola, I am on the right road, going the right direction and turning at the right places.
So, all you hunting for a software fix, I tried them all on my old phone, they didn't help, this is NOT a software issue, I am now convinced, more than ever, that it is in the hardware.
I said there is probably a simpler way to do this, if your phone is under warranty I would recommend swapping it out. I can't guarantee that they would swap it for just a "GPS Issue", and I wish I could tell you how I really bricked the phone....that process went something like this in case you really want to try it.
Flash to Stock
Boot into Recovery
Load ClockWork
Reboot
Flash Axura2.1RC2
Flash Fails
Attempt to boot phone - going to reflash to stock and try again
Start Cursing
Attempt to get into Download
Battery Dies in the process
Spend 4 hours attempting every trick to get into Download or Recovery
and Viola...bricked.
Still not sure why the flash failed, got a weird error but that doesn't matter, it got me a new ("refurbished") phone with a GPS that is dead on.
BTW - If you are curious, I haven't touched the settings in LbsTestMode, I am using that supposedly bad SUPL spirent-lcs.
just curious... what is your build number?
EDIT: lastdeadmouse and I did plan this in advance
Everyone will tell you in a few days it will be bad as ever... How can you be convinced that it's hardware related? Do we have any evidence that Samsung started using a different chip somewhere along the process? Seems pretty unlikely tbh. Not to rain on your parade or anything but... yeah. Enjoy the GPS as long as its working for you!
I am convinced because 50% of the people have no problems and tout how great their phones are. The other 50% can't get them to work.
Software is non-discriminating, it doesn't know who you are, but it surely knows what hardware is in there.
I have heard stories in the past of people making the same claim as you only to re-post a week later and say their "perfect" GPS is now losing locks, etc. etc.
re: jwood55812. They don't necessarily have to design a new chip, it could be a quality control issue where defective chips weren't being intercepted. **could be**
I have always attributed this to the ambiguity of the term "great." When I first got my phone, I said, wow, this is great! Found a lock in 30 seconds. What are all these people talking about? Then I tried to use it everyday downtown for navigation, and, well, I hate it. These people that say it is great, I just don't think they have stressed it hard enough / understand what we are really complaining about.
Is the new phone a captivate? Because i just got my captivate and i have the same stupid issue on google maps where it just drives around randomly and does not stay on the road.
Nice one....you two are in tandem...
Now, can one of you tell me where I would find the build number....I am guessing it is on this label under the battery but which number do you want?
As for the idea that they need new chips to fix the issue, that would assume that it is chip related and not poor antenna placement (that never happens) or poor soldering on the board, or just plain poor Quality Control in general.
Nope, 1008 here. BUT, this is a refurbished unit, received yesterday by the Service Center (they didn't carry replacements until yesterday - good timing on my brick).
Since it is refurbished there is not telling what is really inside the phone, if anything had to be changed OR if the original owner of this fine device had a good one to start with.
Hmm mine is 1009 and if they have a 1010 that fixes it then i want that to replace my 1009.
I verified it worked on the stock ROM, then flashed it, still works like a champ...this ROM is Vibrant based so in theory both the Galaxy and Vibrant code works fine.
On my last phone, it NEVER worked, not the first day and not it's last day.
Okay guys, I'll make it simple through a few principles.
1. GPS is broken on the hardware end. The hardware will never have the performance of comparable units.
2. Every GPS unit will be affected by a number of factors. Must of these factors go unnoticed, because if the GPS is already functional, a 10% increase in performance has no practical benefit.
3. Here at XDA forums many people have speculated on factors that increase or decrease GPS performance. This is only possible because our hardware is broken, and as such, a 10% increase in performance for such a borderline product is practically useful and noticeable.
4. We are stuck with 10% differences and will never have a fully functional GPS.
A good recent example to back it up: hardcore recently discovered a few kernel scheduler tweaks that improves GPS performance. Would anyone have discovered that in a device that had a functional GPS? No. Does it fix GPS? No. Is it a little bit better (~10%?). Probably.
Here's some speculation on what might be going on in here: There may be a +/- 20% swing in GPS performance depending on manufacturing conditions. Because our GPS is broken, we can tell a difference between two products with different build #'s. pmessana, your old device was probably a -20% swing that resulted in a completely defective GPS unit for which returning it was useful
A functional GPS unit should be able to tolerate a few hits, such as minute differences in manufacturing conditions. Our GPS is broken and there are no fixes, just things that help a little bit
Incidentally, this also means that once you do a negative factor, your GPS will fail again. If your GPS is working it is borderline and a -20% hit will push it over the edge. This is why it is useful to see if it still works in a week and not just take a 1 day experience.
Take home message: GPS displays every feature of a borderline functioning system, very sensitive to minute hits
Shame for a phone that is as good as this to have a malfunctioning GPS. Guess i will stop recommending the phone to everyone that grabs it and marvels at it.
Coudn't agree more, there is a defect in there and only the lucky ones get functioning units. Those waiting for a software fix will be waiting forever.
I recommend the phone only to people that aren't tied to their GPS, I tell them straight up, the GPS sucks, the phone rocks, if you want a cool phone that has you in the middle of nowhere, this is it.
I would recommend everyone with a malfunctioning GPS return the phone for a new one, take your chances and if nothing else, Samsung will maybe address it with a giant warranty rate.
i have a 1006 unit and my GPS is also crap... i came from a iphone with GPS that never let me down i love the phone alot more than my iphone... but now im looking for something else to replace this thing with... i should wait and not be an early adopter next time...
I don't see this as Android Development.. The GPS works for me occasionally and I have older units than you guys do :T depending on my ROM.
I still believe in a software fix. :T
Fair enough fatttire, honestly hadn't thought about something like that, I guess I'm naive enough to think that its hopefully software related because then a fix will help everyone, but who knows, I guess I honestly don't use many location based services so its not a super big deal for me.
Just bought my new Nexus S today and I really like it so far. Seems to perform well, so I was excited to try out Homerun Battle 3D. As soon as I started playing, it seemed like something was very wrong with my accelerometer. The game was acting as if my hands were very shaky. So I downloaded a free app called "3D Level" to see how it was reading my accelerometer. Sure enough, when on a flat surface (perfectly still), the app acts as if my phone is moving around. Wondering if this is a software issue (maybe things changed a little in Gingerbread) or if my phone is defective? Is anyone else seeing this behavior? Thanks.
may have to do with a app/phone/OS issue maybe all combined...lots of apps have issues with the NS at the moment.
and i notice what your talking about in Need For Speed Shift
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877524
Similar problems.
Just to follow up on this -- I stopped by Best Buy and was able to reproduce the exact same issues with the display unit. Which leads me to believe that there must be a change to the way apps read the phone's movement now that the gyroscope has been introduced. I guess we'll just have to wait/hope all apps get updated to work correctly again in 2.3.
Hi,
Does anyone else find that the gyroscope is useless on this phone. In street view or Google earth, if I use the hardware sensor to control movement the movement is really jerky and all over the place. Even the compass seems to be screwing up as a 360 turn only seems to have 3 or 4 discreet steps rather than being smooth.
I've installed phone tester and monitored the sensor output and even on a stable surface the values are all over the place.
Is this normal or am I going to have to get the phone replaced?
Cheers,
Phil
you have to wave the phone in a figure 8 pattern to calibrate the compass. I'm not sure why, but I have to do this every day. My Nexus S seems to lose its compass calibration everyday.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Or is it a hardware problem on mine?
I've had mine about a week and this is the only thing that had upset me so far. Google Sky Map was exhibiting this same problem. It was fine on n1 and g2. hopefully it's a software/driver issue. I would have expected a fix by now though if it was.
Has google said anything yet of substance besides 'we'll talk to X team/we're looking into it...'?
Plz oh plz let not be a hardware issue, cause it would mean it can't be fixed. I really hope is driver problem, since the NS it's the first google phone to have a gyroscope (as far as I know) so they didn't pin down the little brat.
It's not the gyroscope. It's the compass. The compass in our phone is extremely bad and subject to lots of noise/interference. It's very unlikely this will be fixed in a software patch, unless Invensense updates their library.
So to confirm this appears to be a general hardware fault with the compass? I can't believe that everyone has this problem on the Nexus S, it's a huge problem and I would have expected more fuss to have been made about it. I have used phone tester to determine what sensors I have on my phone:
Compass: AK8973 Orientation Sensor (Asahi Kasei Microdevices)
Magnetic field sensor: AK8973 3-axis magentic field sensor (Asahi Kasei Microdevices)
Accelerometer: KR3DM 3-axis Accelerometer (STMicroelectronics)
Gyroscope: K3G Gyroscope (STMicroelectronics)
It would be great if anyone who does not experience this problem could let us know and post what sensor they have to see if there are hardware variations around?
@chadrockey Where does Invensense come in? I've seen that they have produced new generation sensor but it appears that the Nexus S doesn't include it.
Invensense supplies the gyroscopes in the Wii MotionPlus and quite possibly the gyroscopes and some additional hardware in the Nexus S.
They also developed the sensor fusion algorithm in the new gingerbread APIs:
It's more or less a problem with compasses in general and probably weak software applied to calculate heading.
Compasses also vary significantly in area, so the closer to the equator you are, the fewer problems you should have. You can also try indoors/outdoors away from dumpsters, cars, computers, anything metal.
All compasses are notorious for noise and having issues with anything metallic. Like computer cases, magnets, fridges, or even our NFC antenna.
ditto, compass sucks. it gets better when i move it away from speakers, computers, monitors, etc. also, i'm in toronto so it generally sucks everywhere. when i was in HK it was pretty good though.
Nexus' compass is totally borked: +/-30° deviation with back cover (nfc antenna), +/-20° without. (90° turns). My old htc hero performed MUCH better ...
So, is it a software or hardware issue??
I cant confirm that. In maps the compass shows the exact direction im looking at. But i can confirm that none of the compass apps i downloaded showed it right most of them showed me south (i pointed to north) i turned 90° left and they showed sw another 90° and i saw se and next 90° showed me east. Same for sensor testing apps my phone lies on the floor and the values for acceleration, magnetic, gyroscope and compass where going crazy but i i couldnt see them bouncing more than +-2%
Same problem by me on LG Optimus One, I think it's Android or generally compass sensor problem. After every launch of some compass app, I need to re-calibrate it in figure 8 movement...
I'm currently on my fifth nexus s.. The compasses on the last four were pretty much unusable. The fifth one is noticeably a lot smoother. On a different note, every single nexus s i used was great in some areas and lacked in other areas. The first one i had was solid but every now and then when i was taking pictures the whole screen would turn red. I would have easily kept it. Dropped it hard, replaced it. Second one had an completely crapped out back button. Third one had that weird can't make a portable wifi hotspot problem. It would almost never turn on and the speaker sounded blown out. Fourth one was all busted.. it had the hotspot problem and the screen was popping up. Plus it got unusually hot. My other ones never got that warm. On the fifth one, the live wallpapers slow the home screen scrolling and app drawer so much I don't use them but the rest of the phone works flawlessly, including the compass. The other phones were never affected by the live wallpapers. Am I a little bummed that a $550 device isn't perfect, ya. Especially if your obsessive like I am, but at this point I've learned that no NS is perfect (in my experience anyway). Even after all that stuff i went through (which might be an extreme case) I still love this phone and I'll have it until the next nexus comes out. I just hope I don't drop this one Holy crap this is a long post...
Mine had issues back on 2.3.2 and CM7 RC1. Flashed RC2 and it wasn't jerky anymore. Not really sure why.
I had my device repaired by Samsung service recently, just got it back 2 weeks ago. I'm not 100% sure it is still the same device, only with a new screen, or a replacement (although the S/N and IMEI are the same as before). However, since I got it back I also noticed this compass weirdness. I definitely didn't have these issues before. But then I also didn't have 2.3.3 before. There is also a thread in Google's forums where people complain and some think it started with 2.3.3 (I'm not yet permitted to post the link here though).
I just hope this is a software problem and will be fixed in an update. In the current state Maps is basically unusable for me, the little blue needle always points in the wrong direction and even directly after calibrating the compass (which seems to last about 5min max) the direction is always off by some 10-15 degrees and also reacts very jerkily to any movement. My HTC Desire never had such problems.
Google please fix this!!!
I have the following weird phenomenon.
Nexus S users, please confirm you have this problem too.
This problem does not manifest itself on a Nexus One.
I have both Nexii.
Open Google Sky Map.
Move the phone around as much as you can in all directions and orientations.
Select Back or Home.
Open Gallery.
Tilt the phone from portrait to landscape
Do you lose the orientation function?
Infact, I lose orientation function across all apps after that. It is as if the phone is "locked" into a certain orientation or loses the function altogether.
This problem corrects itself after a reboot.
More info: Gingerbread 2.3.2 with LauncherPro
Update: If you change the sensors Speed and Damping to HIGH for both, the problem goes away...
I don't think it uses the gyroscope.
I guess it just uses the Compass to find out which direction your pointing, and the accelerometer to measure up and down
i think the problem is most apps aren't built for gingerbread features. and gingerbread has gyroscope support built in. when an app developer asks - basically - for the direction, android will either use 2 or 3 (compass, accellerometer and gyroscope - the gyroscope adds the smoothness) sensors depending on what api lever (android version) the app is built for.
so, make sure the app is built for 2.3? just throwing it out there. this would explain why google earth (that is shipped on the device) is incredibly nice and smooth (compared to earth on a desire). and, would explain why apps downloaded on the market are jerky too probably.
There are still no announcement of next defy, so S750 - waterproof, quad core, 1gb ram, compact enough, have replaceble battery and already avaliable.
Your opinions, guys?
Hi, looking to buy the Lenovo S750 too....
It is also dualsim as added bonus. I've already an MTK6589 - 1G of ram phone (ZTE V987) and they work nicely, except slow GPS (you con fix it via software).
It looks nice but i've 2 doubts:
-1 battery 2000mah....will this be enough for 1 day of intensive usage? I think so, but... this is a doubt for me.
-2 will this be really water proof ? I won't bring it with me diving in the simming pool, but on the borders yes....will it really resist splashes etc. ? So they say, but as anyone got experiences with this device ?
I plan to buy it for bringing it with me when going to the sea or the mountains...If it really is IP76 then it's ok....no reviews yet....strange....not even on YT....nobody bought it ?
I have this phone, since two days. Unfortunatelly someone got it with a original chineese firmware. I managed to install google play store, but have a real pain in the ass with the GPS - it cannot get a fix. You mentioned a software solution - any more info about that?
For now, I cannot state the battery durability, thus I'm only testing it, so in very very extensive usage, it lasts one day. In the near future I'll see how much does it stand in normal usage.
As for waterproofing, I didn't do the tests yet, but it looks very fine made, so it should couse no problem with water.
Have ordered phone. Will got it in next few weeks.
About battery life - i always wear on me 1-2 extra batteryes [battery _must_ be replaceble, this is why i've skipped xperia phones], so i've ordered extra ones with external charger for this one also (search "bl197 charger", they're affordable).
Have checked specs - everything should be really fine with this phone except back cover issue - my siemens/samsung/motorolla waterproof phones have mechanically fixed back lid, but this one seems like not, so if it fell somewhere strong enough back lid fell of the phone.
About waterproof - lenovo declares ip67, so it's same as defy. You should able wash it in the sink. I do that with my defy.
btw, wookario, can you make review or tell your impression about the phone?
Let's call them "impressions review" in few simple points
1. The exterior is made very well. The used parts, have no loose places, all fits tightly, and gives no strange or unexcpeted sounds. The back cover lid is suited very tightly, even opening it, is troubling, thus you have to use some force, to release all of the clamps which hold them. The battery is secured buy a rubber seal, looks tight. Some doubts as to waterproof, give the exterior speaker cover - looks like it was not waterproof, but I have not tested it yet.
The USB port is covered well, with a very well fitted part, secured with a rubber seal. The whole phone, fits well in the hand, and if feels secure to hold.
The colors are interesting, and the body of the phone is made probabily of aluminium.
In total 9,5/10 for design and fitting the elements. Really nothing to complain about.
2. The interior - firmware. I bought the phone with an original chineese firmware. It wasn't my choice, but the guy I bought the phone from, just ordered it this way - due to his language abilities First look - SHIIIIIT!! Everything in chineese!! But fortunatelly I was able to change it into english. Then I installed Titanium Backup Pro (paid version), and to my shock, it came out, that original chineese rom is ROOTED )) Some chineese trees appeared, and titanium could do everything. So I started from removing all chinnese apps, that I didn't know the purporse (backing them up previously). Due to the fact, that chineese phones do not use google play store (Lenovo store instead installed) so then I installed google play store (I used a trick found in some forum to do that, couse using a .apk file crashed all the time). Now I have a google play store, but without all the unused google **** like street view, google maps and more, which usually stuff the internal memory of the phone.
The RAM is 1GB total - for me used like 45% of that amount, so enough left, not to worry if any app will have enough room to install. The internal phone storage is 2,6GB build in, so also enough for basic use. Also a place to fit a micro SD card, so in total you have really plenty of room, to fit apps, and other stuff.
The firmware is very stable, since saturday, it did not crash at all, it's very fast, and in my opinion the quad core works perectly with 4.2.1.
My score 8/10 lack of one point, for not a "standard modded firmware", would be much nicer, if in basic version, it would have a european firmware. One point also less for GPS problems - see below.
3. The display. To be honest the best part of the phone is the display. 4,5'' 960x540 is just enormous. The colors are really nice, and well saturated. The touch screen is very sensitive, and "user friendly". For me 10/10
4. The only problem I did not cope with, is the GPS. It just cannot fix on satelite. Tried many solutions found in internet, but none working. Maybe is the chineese firmware problem, or maybe it's just faulty. Will try to fix it, but I'm starting to doubt
In total I rate the phone 9/10, only GPS is the real problem, all else, including chineese firmware is to be accepted. I'm comparing it to AGM ROCK V5, which is running android 2.3. The difference in usage between theese two, is a milestone + for S750.
Since AGM ROCK V5 was virtually indestructable, mine one unfortunatelly broke the screen, by landing flat onto concrete So I would not try this with S750
For now I have not tested it's waterproof ability. But maybe I will not be the first one to do that
In any more questions, feel free to ask
EDIT - I've managed to run GPS, now works like charm
Thanks. Is E-Compass exist on phone?
Btw platform is similar to lenovo a820, which came out earlyer than s750, so may be most of fixes/mods could be found in a820's discussions.
Yes E-Compass is built in - but I never believe theese devices
As to similarities it would be good to try, but first some modded firmware should come out, just in case something goes wrong, to be able to reflash it after
I don't really need e-compass, but it's cool to have as an option ability to use all features of apps like google skymap. And i've found that most of MTK phones lascks e-compass.
Did you order the phone with a modded etotalk rom?
Have ordered it on aliexpress. It'll have stock rom, I think.
I’ve mentioned some of this in other threads and I realize I maybe the only person who’s primary perpose for having a HDX 7 is to use as a GPS. Here’s the reason. I want something with a larger screen than the typical GPS. It’s going to be used on my motorcycles, street and off road. It needs to have a water proof or at least a water resistance case that is somewhat rugged. Incipio makes a case like that for the HDX 7 and the HDX’s screen is decent outside. Not too many of these type cases available for 7” / 8” tablets. I know Sony has the Xperia Compact that is water proof but I can’t find any type of rugged case for it. Lifeproof makes a water proof case for the Ipad minis and from what I read they do a great job as a GPS. I just don’t think I can buy an Apple product, it may come to that, I hope not.
The problem with my HDX is that it erratically loses fixes on the satellites. It may have a fix on 14 out of 21 satellites for 30 minutes then suddenly 0 out of 21. It may regain enough fixes to get a location but usually not as many as the previous. If I disable the location services then restart them it usually will get a fix again for some unknown amount of time. I do all of this with WiFi off. My HDX 7 is rooted with 4.5.2 . I also have disabled OTA and installed Google GApps . During the GApps installation I overwrote files when prompted. One member stated they did not do this. Can anyone think of anything I’ve done or doing wrong. If someone could provide the stock files to put them back in place of the GApps files I could try that. Or is this just a characteristic of this tablet’s GPS sensors? I read somewhere the HDX 7 LTE has “ A” type GPS sensors which don’t work as well as the others. I use the GPS Status app on my phone and on this tablet as a comparison tool and my phone very rarely loses its fix and if does, it comes right back.
Thanks,
Ken
I don't have any actual working experience with the GPS on a HDX LTE. However, from personal experiences with smartphones' GPS, they tend to run extremely hot when active. They would also exhibit the same type of symptoms and performance issues you've described when they overheat with any extended usage. Ensuring that there's maximum ventilation all around the phone is crucial. Enclosing them in sealed/tight-fitting protective cases, waterproof skins, and/or leather/plastic/fabric cases only diminish their cooling capability and aggravate the problem. Not sure if this is the case with your HDX LTE, but FYI anyway, and you might monitor its operating temperatures more closely.
Thanks tl3 for the info. I have read about the possible heat issue. I think that's a bigger problem when using cellular data and GPS to view online maps. This is sometimes happening in the first 5 minutes of operation or less with no WiFi and no cellular data. Also on those occasions where it maintains a fix for 30 minutes or so the tablet is not hot or even noticeably warm.
Doesn't sound like an overheating issue then. The orientation of the tablet/GPS antenna has an effect on the GPS performance and abilities to acquire and sync with the GPS satellites. Optimal reception requires clear line-of-sight paths with the satellites--dense tall buildings and/or trees do impact the GPS functional capabilities. FYI.
I have two ideas. First, to get the files back, you could always upgrade to 4.5.3, and then downgrade and upgrade again and root. Be careful playing with system files as you could easily brick the device if you forget to set your permissions correctly.
There is however a huge chance that the files are not the problem. Gps was an afterthought on this device, and not implemented well at all. There are many reports of gps not working correctly if you have gapps running at the same time.
So, block gapps while you ride and see if that helps.
Another option would be to purchase an external gps. I am thinking this would be the best option although, you would need bluetooth, and the bluetooth implementation is not too stable either.
Good luck.
Thank y'all for the help. I'm going to undo the OTA block and upgrade. Then I'll try a couple of GPS apps form the Amazon app store and see how the GPS works with all stock files. If it's no better they'll be a Kindle HDX 7 with the latest software and a new Incipio case for sale on the Bay.
Keep in mind you can side load the GPS app of your choice if not available in the Amazon app store. Most will run fine on stock Fire OS. Paid apps can be a problem especially those available exclusively through the Play Store. You have to get creative. To be clear I'm not talking about cracking or ripping off. Sometimes reaching out to the developer will yield a solution.
The other issue to be careful of is that in app purchases do not transfer well if purchased from the play store (unless you are rooted and have a fully functioning play store).
On another note, I was thinking of this thread last night as was outside taking the snowthrower attachment off my lawn tractor and getting the mower deck on for the summer.
I was using my original nexus 7 as a source for the literature. I have an incipio case on it with a zagg screen protector. The grease washed off pretty easily.
The screen on my nexus pails in comparison to the Kindle however.
Yesterday I tried to enable the OTA by renaming it back to the original “DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk” so I could update to 4.5.3 . I rebooted, checked for updates and got the message “no updates found”. I downloaded an app from the Amazon mothership just to make sure my HDX was connecting to my account. The app downloaded and installed with no problem. Anyone got any ideals why it won't update from 4.5.2 to 4.5.3?
Thanks,
Ken
Their system may be similar to Google's (i.e. the OTA won't download if the /system partition has been modified).
So when I installed the Play Store I modified or could have modified the system partition? If so can I return it to the stock partition?
Thanks,
Ken
You could try to force the update by downloading one of the oem images and sideloading it onto the root of the sdcard. You should only do this with 3.2.8, 4.5.2, or 4.5.3.
Yesterday I was able to side load the 4.5.3 image, I did a factory reset, signed back in to Amazon and downloaded a GPS Status type app. Still having the same problem. I think I’ve thrown enough time at this and for now I’m giving on the ideal of big screen GPS. I’ll watch this thread for a while in case someone has other suggestions or another member is having great success or similar problems.
Thanks for everyone’s help,
Ken
Hey Ken, been following your story and may have contributed an idea or two along the way. Another poster mentioned an external GPS w/bluetooth. Although a bit pricey the BT-Q818 series from QStarz has strong reviews and seems to get the job done; decent battery life too. The receiver could live just about anywhere on your ride minimizing clutter. Toss in an inexpensive power pack and you could probably go for many days without having to recharge. Obviously throwing more coin at this project is the last thing you want to do but the big screen, great case and experience you gathered over the past few weeks might make one more go worth the effort. Amazon is pretty good about returns during the first 30 days if it doesn't work out. Just an idea ...
BTW - at least one review from an HDX owner on a less expensive device (here).
Thanks Davey,
I'm a gadget nut but in this case I don't want to add another gadget especially on my off road bike. I'll probably get a water proof GPS. That will work fine for my use, just wanted something with a larger screen because it's easier to plan or modify routes on a larger screen.
Thanks
Ken
Hi Ken - don't know if you are keeping tabs on this forum and hung on to your HDX. If so a new rom is in the works that may provide the gps capability you were seeking assuming hardware is up to the task. It will be a bit before a variation is ready that is compatible with your firmware. Just wanted to give you a heads-up. Hope wheels and road are treating you well.
Thanks, Davey126 that's great news. I still have it mostly because I've been too lazy to put it on eBay. I'll hang on to it a while longer and maybe I'll get lucky with the new ROM. Will that information be posted in the developer thread or here?
Ken
It's in the developer nd Q&A thread.
As usual I'm confused. If I'm reading the correct thread I need an unlocked boot loader before I can flash the ROM. Is an unlocked boot loader now possible on 4.5.3?
Thanks,
Ken
No, but you will soon possibly be able to run safestrap.
