Contacts and dialer names - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, quick question!
My contacts are showing up in the contacts bit but when I get phonecalls and messages I just see numbers. Even though I have the contacts saved. Any ideas what it may be?
I'm on X note 5.1 and have lots of xposed settings installed, non of which modify the dialer or contact storage.

Do you have call display as part of your cell package? I believe you need that service activated in order for you to see incoming contact info.
If you do have that service, maybe call display is turned off in your options?

I think I know the problem ur having, so I'm gonna attempt to help. This happened to me and for the life of me couldn't figure out the solution. But then after a few minutes I got it. What u wanna do is open up ur contacts then hit the menu button and choose "contacts to display". Once that page pops up pick the one that says "device". Now back out to ur contacts again, then pick a contact and insert whatever may be missing. For me it was all the pictures. So I had to apply all my pictures over again. I think this is what is going on with ur contacts. Once ur done adding pictures go to ur messages or ask someone to call and u should now see all their info including pics. I hope I was able to help u. If I was all the way off base, sorry for post.

That's not standard in the USA? -EDIT Just seen original poster is in the UK - Caller ID is standard here if you have their number stored.

Was what I was gonna suggest also, and it's the most logical one I can think of regarding the subject.

Ahh, see, depending on what package you have here, it's an extra feature you need to pay for, so thought it might be something to consider. I have no idea how cell packages are structured outside my local carriers.

Is there any way to "add recipient" in stock messaging app?

Ive downloaded and use Handcent and yes it is nice. The reason I looked for and started using it was because of the lack of add recipient option when composing a new message in the stock app that is included. I feel like Im just missing how to do this in the stock app. Is it possible? It seems like it would be the most basic option but I can't seem to figure out how.

Normally,in the stcok app, after you put the name of the recipient, you just have to tap again inside the recipient box to add another one. else if you put phone number instead of a contact in the phonebook, then you just have to put a comma between the two phone number.
You misunderstood. The idea is that I don't want to have to type in their name. I want to be able to choose from my list of contacts in my phonebook.
I think the only options now are separating recipients with commas or FORWARD the message to another recipient after you have sent it out. I prefer the latter since it doesn't create a whole new thread.
lol is no one actually reading the question???
I haven't come across a way to add recipients, I always just type the 1st 2 letters and add them from that, IMO its easier than scrolling through a list of a few hundred people
Open contact list. Long press contact then select send message. It then opens messaging app.

Seeing as everyone is misunderstanding you're request I will give you the short answer.. No.
You can't select multiple recipients from a list in the stock app, unlike handscent, where you can.

Sorry... where in the question does it mention multiple recipients? I think i did answer the question!

[Q] Account pictures and data.

It's on the tip of my tongue, but I forgot how to make the phone recognize who I am. I'm in my contacts list, but how do I make the phone realize that that contact is me? For example, in Messaging, the threads boil down to who you're talking to, ex, Allison would be who I am texting, but for my bubble it says 'me', and a place for a picture. I think if I made the phone realize that I was that contact in my phone, pictures would appear where they need be and certain info relating to me would also appear when needed. Make sense? So basically I just want to know how to make that possible (I know how I just forgot and it's bugging me).

Just add yourself to your contacts with your full name, phone number, e-mail address, and picture. This should do it.

Well that's the thing... I am in there as myself, picture, email, phone number, emails, address, everything essentially, but for some reason my picture doesn't show up in the messaging app, and I don't think my phone knows it's me.
But it has to know it's me, because of my account sign in through google... Hmmm.
Click..menu..settings..about phone
I bet your "my phone number" shows as unknown?
Need to put your SIM into another mobile that allows you to edit the number.

contacts>menu>display options>only contacts with phones.
i kid you not i dont have that option. when i hit contacts on the launcher i simply dont have menu as a choice. instead all i have is add contact search display group manage accounts settings and more which takes me to share vcards and import/ export.
what is going on? what am i not getting here?

Menu as in the menu button. Bottom left corner of your phone. Anyways it might be slightly different on stock rom as I'm on cm7. I know its there though, you will find it I have faith in you.

cheers mate for your faith but it is misplaced. there simply isnt an aption on this phone i have. guess it is just one more reason to get it rooted unlocked and flashed with cm7.
oh by the way on a completely separate note... i did read in another thread that someone else did exactly the same thing i did and stick there thumb in the speaker grill thinking it was the power button!!!! lmao!!! what bad design. it is my only gripe with this phone the shocking build quality and it is even more surprising cos this was meant to be there flagship model at the time.
I don't have that option either, so you aren't the only one. I am on stock froyo, on Atrix in Europe

[MOD REQUEST] Remove Sms from Call Log

I've had he GS3 for a week now and I'm still using my GS2 because of the SMS in the call logs (plus other annoyances of touchwiz).
For the GS2 a mod was made to remove the SMS entries plus also display original time of sending, the ability to add more than 10 contacts and also disable the mms convert.
Is this possible for GS3?
Thanks in advance.
I'm sure once more phones get in the hands of developers we'll start to see more and more mods and custom firmware. Remember the phone hasn't even been out a week!

It's true. Stock ROM doesn't save the selection. You have to select "All Calls" every time you return to the log after a given amount of time.
So is this mod available by now?

SMS received on my N7 ?

Hello,
I have an 3G N7 and know that it can not receive / send SMS. OK, that is what was told of.
But today I got a notification that I have a message in notification bar, opened it and it looked like a regular SMS message.
Then I tested myself, I sent a normal SMS to my tablet gsm number and received it instantly. I'm on Vodafone if that makes any sense.
Build number is JDQ39 - baseband 1231_0.17.0_1205, Kernel 3.1.10-g05b777c.
Obviously this is some app inside that handles the received message, what's the app name ? location ? at least is interesting to know that at least SMS I can receive. How can I access it ?
Best regards,
Radu
Hi, i also have the same question. Anybody knows?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Download Go sms from store.
Google Voice works great on the N7 for sending and receiving sms, also. Sms works over wifi or data.
I maybe not beein too explicit.
I have received two SMS, regular kind, sent through my gsm carrier.
As i received them, means there is some app that recognise it and can handle the sms.
Question is, what is the app, how can i acces the messages received.
I'm aware of various solutions for sms that require to have an online account, in order to handle sms, do not want to use this kind of service.
Also, there is hack to install sms/mms apk by rooting, but, again this is not the object of my question.
I just want to check my incoming sms's for now.
Best regards,
Radu
Like mentioned above, if you install gosms or any other third party app it should allow you to view that text message that came through the carrier

Long press the notification and press "App Info" and that will tell you the name of the app.
Hello again,
Here is screenshot and detaild of the app.
As it says it receives SMS, but also can write SMS- see last line, in theory.
Question is, where can find this app. Looks to be hidden..

How to do so with stock mms.apk has already been covered here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34282107
Right in the N7 3G dev section. XDA search function is highly recommended

Hello Rebel,
I know the MMS.APK, saw it, thank you for heads up.
My specific question is, why should I use that, if I have an app already installed. I do get SMSs from any regular gsm phone, without being necessary to create an online account for GOSMSPRO or whatever similar. The screen shot says that I might be able to send also, on my cost SMSs. No probIem, just want to find that app that handles the SMS received. Can I do that ? can I send using same app that is ALREADY installed?
thank you for patience
radu
So it seems the 'Simple message receiver' is an app that comes with the 3g N7. Mine is just wi-fi, so I can't check, but does your app drawer have that app? If you check Settings > Apps > All, is it listed there? I have no idea how to open it if it is not in the app drawer or if you would be able to send using it anyway. Interesting that it is included in the 3G version.

Yes. As thw thread states, they are successfully receiving and sending sms from the same app over gsm, just as you would on a phone. The only difference i forsee is doing so with a dedicated data sim, or using the sim from your existing phone.
Many are using the latter, and using other apps to forward thier phone calls to the data side, and using sms normally.
