Slow SanDisk Micro SD 64gb Extreme Pro - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I have a Verizon Note 3. Just bought the SanDisk Extreme 64 GB microSDXC Class 10 UHS-I Memory Card (SDSDQX-064G-AFFP-A) and received it from Amazon. I've used the SanDisk Memory Zone App and it's speed test is saying the read spead is about 30 MB/s. Additionally, I've used the A1 SD Bench app and the results for the Accurate with reboot results are worse. 21.61 MB/s! I put the SD card in and reformatted it in the Note 3. Everything is stock, no root. The claimed max read speed with the card, according to SanDisk, is 80 MB/s. I've even heard some people getting almost 100 MB/s with these cards. What gives? Any suggestions on how to increase the performance? BTW, the card is still blank and I haven't added any files from my old card on to the new one. Thanks!

I would like more info about this also. I am between 64GB Ultra and Extreme...

The note 3 doesn't support UHS-1 so you wont get anywhere near the advertised speeds.

Is it a hardware or software thing?

This is the answer to OP's Question.
Yeah, I too suffer with the same problem and painfully found out that the Card Reader (In our Case the Mobile) should support handling that card as well. My GoPro Hero 3 Supports this flawlessly.

So, our device is high end. But it doesn't support this. What phones do? HTC?

[Q] Desire Z SD card class?

Hi,
Does anybody here knows which class is the 8gb micro sd card included in the Desire Z??
Not 100% positive on this but I remember reading somewhere that it was only a class 2 card... =/
I got a class 4 card, but seems to be a bit of lottery.
I've read that some got class 2.
Mine was 8 GB, Samsung, Class 2. And it got replaced right away with a 16 GB Class 10.

Is there any point in a class 10?
Can the Z handle it? I know the Pulse has a limit of class 6...
Also - nice card.
Damm I hope I get a class 4 but how can you know which class is the sd card? Does it say on it?
Yes typically the card will have the class printed on it.
Remember though the class is a measurement of the MINIMUM speed the card is capable of handling.
Ex: Class 4 can write at a MINIMUM of 4 mb/s. I have a kingston class 4, 8GB card that I have tested thourougly and it regularly writes at 8+ mb/s.
Not sure where you draw the line on what is overkill for an Android Device. I know on other devices, I.E. SLR Cameras, a slow/bad card can have a big impact on the way things run...
Came with a Samsung Class 2 8GB for me, replaced it with an San Disk 16GB Class 4.

Yes, it can handle the Class 10. The only real benefit is when doing 720p video recording. Most of the time, anything over a Class 4 will feel the same in day-to-day usage (other than video recording).
The other advantage is that if you transfer files to the phone, it'll be somewhat faster.
Also, the card you get with the DZ, it show the class right on the card itself. In my case it was a Samsung 8GB MicroSDHC Class 2. Replaced with a Kingston 16GB MicroSDHC Class 10. <3
Here's a somewhat subjective read on the topic: http://pocketnow.com/android/does-using-a-faster-sdcard-make-your-phone-faster
I don't know if you can see the difference between Class 2 and Class 10 on the Desire Z. Maybe running some apps that install on SD Card is a little faster, also saving photos, browsing through MP3s, playing videos, etc.
When moving large quantities of data (bigger files), there is an increase in speed, e.g. 18 MB/s (Class 10) vs. 10-12 MB/s (Class 2). I expect the differencte to be the same with small files, but I haven't tested yet. Maybe it's not worth the double price tag, but I needed 16 GB and chose to go with the fastest option available...
Mine and everyone else I know with a Z or G2 came with a samsung 8gb class 2 card.
I have now put my 8Gb class 4 in, but I might look to get a bigger class 4 or 6 card soon.

HOLD FIRE on mymemory. This new card is giving read speeds of 10 mbs but write speed only 1 mbs!!!!!!!!!! I need to test in my Hero to see what I get.
Can anyone recommend good speed test apps, for either android or to run off my Windows lappy?
I got a SanDisk Class 4, 8GB card with mine (NAM Unbranded/Unlocked Version)
Tested it and it writes at 5.21 mb/s and reads at 14.8 mb/s

32GB MicroSD Wait!!!

I recently picked up a 32gig MSD for my Evo as I kept running out of room on the 16gig card. I went from a 16GB Class 6 to the latest Class1 or 2 that SanDisk has. My phone takes around 3 minutes to boot now at best. Looking at gallery or anything like that is SLOwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. If you are thinking about and have lots of pics/videos and use App2SD like I do, you will only be disappointed in the end results with the Sandisk card. Just sharing so others can save and wait for a real card.

Interesting...I have a 32gb sandisk class 2 card that is 3/4 full and I have very little if any delay...I only have 8.19gb space left.

I have 11 gigs left at current and the only change I did was this card and I can say that performance of the gallery and boot time has severly suffered from what my old card gave me.
the lower the class number on the card, the slower the transfer rate. So your 16gb class 6 may have less room, but its way faster than a 32gb class 2. Dont know if this helps or not.

+1. I switched from the Class 2 8GB card that came with it to a Class 10 16GB card and the differences are staggering. I never benchmarked my class 2, but I get around 17.8 Mbps read/write on this one. On my 8GB card it would take about nine minutes to transfer a movie from my phone, now it takes under a minute.
that isnt always true that cards are just slower. The class system is a min spec system meaning they have to atleast hit this to make it they can be well over it depending on the chip used
Most people benchmarking the San disk 32gb cards are finding them to perform closer to class 4 then the indicated class 2. Check out the thread in the accessory section. Perhapse your card is defective.
Sandisk. The Yugo/Walmart of the mem card world. None of the pro photographers that shoot digital that I've met will even touch them.

PNY 16GB class 10 Micro SD or Sandisk 16GB Class 4 Micro SD

I will be using it for storing/taking photos/movies and storing lots of gameloft HD games on it.
Which is better for my x10 with what I use it for? Which one will have better performance when it comes viewing photos and movies? Will the games load faster on the pny class 10?
Or will the difference in performance from two cards not noticeable from everyday use?
Thanks
Not card wise but company wise, sandisk makes better memory cards if not the best in my opinion. I have never had a problem with their cards.
Choose them if the memory card you need is made by them.

Read speeds can be significantly improved with the SD Speed Increase app developed by a xda member. Write speeds have no such cache fix available.
Unless you are writing very sequencally all cards are very slow. Technically a class 10 should be twice as fast with seq writes, but differences in materials and design sometimes reduce the difference.
A 32gb Kingston class 4 writes at 4.356 MB/s and a Lexar 32gb class 10 writes at 11.44 MB/s. But a Class 4 8gb Sony writes at 10.19MB/s! So what you actually get will be unknown until you have the cards.

Hi there, i just bought a generic 16gb class 10 microSDHC card off of ebay for £16, it was cheap so i was a bit skeptical, but i received it and did sum read write tests, i got upto 11meg write speed so atleast i know its not a fake, but its working well videos and pics are saving a lot quicker so im happy with it for the moment.
I have both cards right now, It was used for my sony camcorder.
How can I test both of them in my phone?
stan.s whats that app you are referring to? where can I find it?

I bought a PNY 16Gb Class 10 off PLAY for a bargain price (about £16) and am now in the process of returning it as I had to keep fixing errors using my PC.
I have had a lot of PNY flash cards for my camera with no problems, so hop this is just a one-off?
Hopefully the replacement card (a direct replacement) will be better.....

is good.... no prb at all
It varies alot depending on brand but last time I checked android simply didnt take advantage from anything faster than class 4.. You can of course remove card plug it into pc card reader and fill it faster.. But android os is limited and wont take advantage of a class 10 card speed. Maybe on 2.3 or 3.0 ? But it doesnt on 2.1/2.2 at least

MicroSD Duel: Sandisk Class 10 vs Samsung UHS-1

Hello,
I happen to have 2 fast microSD 64 gigabyte storage cards, and decided to run a benchmark test on each, using my International Galaxy Note II model GT-N7100. I thought there might be some interest on the forum in whether there's any significant performance difference between these cards on our devices.
The two cards are as follows:
- Sandisk Ultra Class 10 64gb microSD
- Samsung UHS-1 64gb microSD
Both cards are empty, and factory-formatted with the exFat file system. Prior to testing on my phone, I mounted each card in a USB 2.0 card reader attached to my Windows 7 laptop and did a full chkdsk with sector scan to verify the storage was as advertised and there were no problems. Both cards scanned as clean with no detectable problems.
My phone is running Android 4.1.1, using Samsung baseband N7100XXALJ2, kernel version 3.0.31-310959, with a build number of JRO03C.N7100XXALJ3.
This phone has never been rooted or flashed with a non-factory ROM.
The benchmarking program I chose to use was "SD Card Tester" version 1.0.5 as downloaded from the Google Play Store.
Each card was tested immediately after rebooting the device and waiting one minute for the system to fully stabilize. Power Saving mode was not active during these tests.
I ran each test 3 times. The results below are the average of the 3 tests per card.
Sandisk Ultra Class 10 (64gb) results:
13.68 MB/s read, 10.26 MB/s write
Samsung UHS-1 (64gb) resuts:
32.8 MB/s read, 14.65 MB/s write
I hope some of you find this information useful. If anyone has questions or suggestions for other ways to compare these storage options, let me know.

I was getting worse results with my phone but considering the Sandisk only cost $40 I'm not overly concerned. So long as it doesn't die on me. The Samsung card is like double the price of the Sandisk.
Well, I've got a bit of a disappointing update as I've continued to work with these cards today.
Once you load up these cards with data, a lot of the performance advantage for the Samsung appears to go away.
I now have both of these cards about 33% full (same directories and files on each), and I'm finding no more than 1.5 to 2.5 MB/s measurable difference, either in writing or reading. Although the Samsung has remained the fastest in every test so far, it really isn't much of a difference at this point.
I'd like to understand why the Samsung card appears to suffer more of a performance drop than the Sandisk as the cards fill up, but can't hazard a guess right now.
The small differences I'm now seeing, both in tests as well as normal usage, certainly do nothing to justify the premium price of the Samsung card, IMO.

Couple of comments:
1) You need to bump up the size slider to about 2150MB to get a reliable result. As you move the slider, a colored pop-up will turn green when you have reached a size that should yield "excellent" results.
2) Unless you have somehow swapped the internal & external storage cards on your device, your screenshot appears to show the results of testing your internal card rather than your external one.
If 2) is the case, here is a graphic showing how to select your external card (it can be somewhat tricky with this app, especially the "tap" called for in step one - I often have to double-tap rather than single-tap, and it usually doesn't work the first time or two I try it...).

Who uses a microSD card in their note 4?

I am looking to get a microSD for storing my music and photos to use on my note 4. I heard that microSD cards can slow down the phone's performance, can you share your experiences with the microSD and note 4 lag? Thanks
I'm using a 64gb microSD on my N4. I'm not sure on the lagging issue coming from the use of microSD or what since been using the microSD at beginning of ownership. N4 upgraded to lollipop

I did experience few delays when I used a class 6 microSD that I found in my old phone. Make sure you use at least class 10.
I'm using a Samsung 64Gb PRO - haven't noticed any impact on phone performance. I store all my photos and media on it, and even large 16MP images load instantly in QuickPic.
128 gb SanDisk class 10 here. No lag what so ever...

This is a bit of a loaded question.
Firstly, The speed and size of the memory card can impact the performance of the card. I use a 64GB Class 10 card and its around 90% full, i find that this does impact performance i do have lag when accessing certain folders.
The lag in my instance is caused with the fact i have over 3000 image files in folders/ subfolders and my app i use for gallery loves to thumbnail them all.
Games, and call recording etc result in next to no impact.
Scandisk 64gb class 10. Almost full, with a lot of music, pictures and documents. No lag at all.
i use a 32GB MicroSDHC Class 10 from transcend
It doesn't cause any lag but i'm testing the phone without it, suspecting it may cause overheating, even though probability is very weak
I have a 32gb Sony high speed I got on Amazon for ten bucks. Works great!
128gig here. Sandisk.
32GB class 10 since day one. Never had any lag.
I've been using a 32GB Sandisk MicroSDCard in my N910C for over 2 weeks now and I haven't noticed any lag at all. I mainly use my microSDCard for media, documents and photo storage. That way I don't have to worry about my N910C's internal memory running out.
128Gb Samsung Card
I'm using a 64GB class 10 Sandisk ExtremePro that I bought on sale and had used in my previous phone- I've tried the phone without the card and the lag is still there so I'm assuming the card isn't the factor. I'm on lollipop btw.
128 gb Samsung class 10 here...
im using a Viking Man 64 GB Class10 UHS1 U3 microsd card
