[Q] Doesn't make sense... what could be the problem? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Here's the problem: Every ROM I flash, except for one, Data does NOT work.
I flashed probably 7 AOSP ROMs today, not a single one my data worked..
I flashed TriForce Rom, it's a touchwiz ROM, 3g works perfect!
I decided to odin back to stock, No-Root, and my Data isnt working.. my phone isn't even rooted...
What's going on, any help? I am on sprint. My phone is currently not rooted, and data still doesn't work.

Sounds like you lost your radio one way or another, if baseband/software version is unknown you need to flash the modem, MJA 4.3 if that's what you are on, also if you are using twrp or anything else I would highly recommend using Philz latest recovery, with Philz recovery prior to making a back up you need to change Nandroid settings, specifically making sure the selinux 4.3 box is checked. One more thing you need to do the modem flash while on a TW ROM. I guess now a few questions, what are you on now 4.2.2 or 4.3, did you ota yet? And what recovery are you using

Hey I really appreciate you reaching out to me, I'm apologize, I'm such a noob with all of this and your reply seems very helpful.. but I'm not really familiar with most of that.
I'm unrooted right now, should I root, and then what should be my next step?

Can I OTA update?

Hey I'm new to the forums but been reading them for a while and I just have a question with OTA updates. I have a nexus 4 that's been rooted and have clockwork mod. I have also flashed the .33 baseband on 4.2.2. I have stock rom but Franco kernel however I backed up the stock kernel with his updater app.
I know I can't OTA with the kernel but flashing the stock one is no big deal. Can I OTA with the rest being on there?
Also if I do the lte wifi hotspot fix will that stop the OTA update as well?
Thanks in advance.

As long you have clockwork mod on the rom you can not OTA...its always going to be manual way of flashing the OTA and that process will remove clockwork mod but using apps like voodoo keeps you rooted so you can easily install clockwork mod again after the update.
No Recovery+Stock ROM+Stock Kernel+Stock Latest Radio= auto OTA update.
I hope that made sense..but i could be wrong but that's what works for me.

You CAN ota if you have a custom recovery.
However, the WiFi hotspot fix will kill it.

So if anything is modded at all except for basic root I won't be able to apply the update that arrives to my phone directly right? I will have to flash it in cwm? I assume I will have to wipe cache and such before I apply the zip right?
Do I have to revert anything back stock or can I just flash the zip directly over what I have now and just re apply the kernel and baseband?

Sorry one more thing with the latest SU I will stay rooted I think but I will lose cwm and have to re obtain it or will I keep it if survival mode is checked?

If you flash it from CWM then you will keep CWM and also keep root (if you say yes when it asks you).

Sorry I am a bit confused still, when I get the update.zip and flash it in CWM do I have to wipe or no? and if I don't will everything stay the same? or will I lose my 0.33 baseband and kernel? I'm also wanting to do the lte hotspot fix so would I lose that too?

You don't have to wipe.It does not matter if you wipe or not, you will still lose your base band, you'll just have to flash the old baseband again. As for the kernel if the ota comes with a new kernel your old stock kernel will be replaced with the new one in the ota.
You actually can accept a ota update with a custom recovery but you have to be stock everything else, no other mods or anything. The ota will install fine and youll see that it goes through your custom recovery when updating. After the update you will lose root and your custom recovery however unless you recovery someone holds onto it.
As I know, we need to modify something after installing custom recovery. Else, stock recovery will be installed upon reboot. So even after modifying, OTA still works ?

So bascially no matter what i have on the phone update.zip will go through fine and put on the phone what it contains and it's up to me to put everything back? Also I've heard mixed opinions if I will lose root and CWM, mostly people say it will give me an option to keep it after applyng the update.

Can you tell me what's wrong with what I said? I was assuming he was on stock rooted with a custom recovery. Is it not true that if you get an ota update and it contains a new baseband and new stock kernel it will overwrite the last last stock kernel and baseband.

No it doesn't overwrite anything. It just fails.
OTA's contain patches. Not complete files. If the original file isn't there it will abort.
I can see how this can be confusing because it is different from custom roms.

But thats only if he has the lte fix right. So if he just flashes a stock kernel without that patch, the ota could work.
For example the stock boot.img
I'm rooted with cwm, custom kernel and old baseband, stock rom. I mean I can very easily revert my kernel back to stock and flash the newest baseband.
The only thing is there's a bunch of stuff I might want to do more but don't want to make it hard to update since it's important to me.

Yep. The phone needs to be 100% stock with the exception of the recovery to complete the OTA. If the files, kernel, radio, etc. are replaced to the original state you'd be good to go.
PS. Sorry if I came off as a jerk this morning. I had a case of the Mondays.

Just as I wrote above, You can do as many modifications as you want, just make sure you bring the phone back to stock before you flash the OTA.zip, otherwise it will fail.
When the new OTA comes out I will update my OTA Help-Desk thread with all the new requirements.

[Q] Noob here, Help Needed (what's new)

Hello,
First off I am very new to this. I always try to be as careful as possible and do as much research as I can. I follow all the steps as directed and ask questions ahead of time before screwing things up.
My problem now is I accepted an OTA update to 4.3 from what I thought was a stock 4.2.2. Apparently I was wrong and the superUSER app was still installed on my phone. I no longer have the ability to use my WiFi- (I switch the toggle and it just stays off) I have tried to reset and restore. I have tried to delete all data and re-install. I have tried everything I'm comfortable with at this point. I dont know if I should try using ODIN to flash stock since I probably have a knox bootlocker and dont want to do more damage. I am posting photos because I noticed my naseband and my build number don't match up. I am afraid im stuck in between 4.2.2 and 4.3. I would greatly appreciate any advice or even a push in the right direction. I have been searching trying to find a solution for over a month and the most I can get is... "your an idiot, dont update OTA while rooted, etc etc" Hindsight is 20/20. Thank you again for your time.

I am not an expert but from what Im seeing your on a 4.3 rom but the modem did not update. Your modem is still mf9. I would flash a 4.2 rom and go from there. I don't want to give the wrong info hopefully someone can chime in that knows more than me.

Yeah that is what I was noticing as well. I have soft bricked my phone twice now trying to use odin and going back to a stock 4.2. The flash says fail everytime. I am wondering if KNOX is blocking ODIN from flashing the new ROM. Thanks for your quick response and I guess this means I am on the right path. Now I just need to find a way to flash a stock 4.2 on my fluster clucked half 4.2 half 4.3 phone.
I do know that once you're on MJA there's no going backwards. Try odining the modem. Make sure you turn your phone off...then boot to DL mode. Don't just boot to DL mode seems to work better that way.

I would suggest first trying to reinstall your mf9 modem via odin , if that doesn't work I'd try to install the mja modem via odin. You can find the links to files here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42954149&postcount=2
And a thread about a similar issue so you can get a better idea of what you need to do.

[HELP] i9505 data dropping

Hello guys.
I have a i9505 and it was running perfectly coolboy 4.3 GPE rom in old bootloader.
Then, I wanted to flash the brand new Jamal`s 4.4 GPE. And for that it was needed to upgrade my firmware to the last ML6 BL (Knox 0x1, but i dont really care about warranty). I flashed a MKE full package using odin, after I flashed ML6 modem using odin too, then Philz touch CWM and in the last the zip 4.4 rom.
It was fine, but i wanted to revert to 4.3 Rom because i didnt really like kitkat. and now my problem starts......
i flashed MKE stock package again, philz touch and then 4.3 GPE zip that was previously installed. After all this.. Everything works wonderfully, but the data.... it keeps dropping all the time! I tried everything... flashed ML6 firmware, ML6 modem, 4.4 Rom again, MKE stock again... nothing fixed.
To use data, i need to turn airplane on and off, but after sometime it drops again. When I select "only 2G network" it works fine too... but when 3G or LTE, it drops constantly...
Please, anyone have a suggestion... I really apreciate.!
Thanks in advance.
I had similar problems with coolboy's 4.3 GPE, the data just would not stick to "on", even on 2G. So I decided to flash Jamal's 4.3, and everything was great, on the very same modem! So I would suggest you to try that! Though it doesn't really explain anything! :silly:

thank you... but i can observe the problem running all kind of rom. I tried stock frimware, 4.3 coolboy rom, 4.4 jamals rom, CM11 rom, AOSP...
i dont think its related to any of them. maybe it is because of flashing modems and firmwares using odin.
Did you ever try to downgrade your modem? If not, then I don't see why installing latest stock ROM+Modem should not fix this!

Nope. ... I did not try this....
I dont see that either. Im used to do these flashing stuff. This is my fourth samsung phone, and i had never seen something that even a pure firmware flash didnt solved.
I looked for something related to knox triggered. But i didnt find anything that could blame knox for this.

[Q] OTA 4.4 back to 4.3

Can someone help me take my S4 back to 4.3? I got the OTA update for 4.4 yesterday morning and have had nothing but problems. Terrible battery life (40% down in 3 hours with little to no use) WiFi wont turn on thanks to this piece of junk Knox software. So before I dump Samsung completely for a Moto X or Nexus, can someone help me downgrade from 4.4 back to 4.3 where I had no problems?
Were you totally stock before the OTA? If you still have warranty left, I would bring it in to a Sprint store and *****.
If not, you can try one of 2 things. 1) flash the NAE tar file using odin to see if that fixes your issues or 2) flash the MK2 tar file to bring you back to 4.3

I went Cyanogen at one point, didn't like it, and flashed back to stock. When the OTA hit I was rooted but had made no changes from stock, not even an uninstall of a Samsung app. I am backing things up now to flash the NAE again, but I want a version without this Knox garbage in it. Is there such thing?
I read that you can't flash back with Odin from 4.4 to 4.3 so I don't know how to do option 2 at this point.

You're saying your bootloader went back to MK2 after this? Didn't think that was possible. I've had nothing but stupid little issues myself after using Odin to flash the phone to NAE. I've done factory resets... Completely wiped the phone in Philz. Tried KToonsez kernel as well and stock NAE just sux! I'll probably just flash Liquid Smooth back on it, was only trying to stick with stock NAE for stability and camera , that phone is my girls and she doesn't have the patience for all the bugs that come with custom Roms lol
Anyways just want to confirm that with you. Thanks

I don't know if that is possible for those of us rocking triband. Obviously we cannot use the Mk2 modem or rom. In any event, I upgraded to 4.4.2 on my new L720T and regretted it, but now I'v" managed to install twrp and rooted it and the rom settled down after a few days. At first, horrible battery use but now its amazing. My battery reads 75 percent after 14 hours and that's quite good enough. The only issue I still face is the SD card thing, but that only seems to apply third party software as I can move files directly from internal to external memory using the stock files app that comes with android.
i dont know about triband. i dont have one and im not going to pretend im a smart dev because thats also not true.. i HAVE ODIN 4.4.2 THEN turned around and ODIN 4.3 due to something i didnt like...im not sure if it changes the bootloader or not, i dont even check. i have only tried this with mk2 to nae.. when i purchesed my device it came with mk2 so i have never tinkerd with the other bootloaders. if you have something other then mk2 id ask a dev befor doing anything. like i said it works for me as long as i flash the modem FIRST that corrisponds to the build. ( mk2 or nae )...and in some cases if the wifi is borked on nae, iv had to flash the modem again after instalation of the rom.. i cant explain why any of this happens....

Lol I know what you mean... Sometimes things just seem to work or they don't.
But that's interesting you can go back to mk2 after being on nae. I figured that was not possible. But if you didn't get any fails in Odin while downgrading that's great. Maybe I'll get ballsy and try this later.

My issue is non logical and selective programs that will not allow down loading to the internal storage. .yes I saw the long list of not downloading to the sd card, but mine is internal memory. The external sd works fine.
I was running bone stock 4.4.2 for a week no issues. I rooted via cf autoroot and lost ability to save files from any program I found ..zedge..swift key language pack..chrome etc.
Last night did a full wipe and factory reset in twrp. Then restored from backup the stock nae found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50668765
And still have same issues except this time Internet Explorer is allowing image downloads to the internal memory?? Other programs are still the same.
Thanks
EDIT
Update - Found TWRP has an issue that causes loss write abiltity to internal storage with some roms after you do a restore...read about in in the Sacs Thread

So, tryed flashing unknowns stock rom and after multiple fix permissions wipes etc AND reading about 20 plus pages of the thread, had more problems than the other stock rom
Seems others had internal download issues, but maybe some kind person here could direct me to a solution as they did not appear to have one?? At this Time, Im sorry I ever rooted this thing...S3 and all my old phones rocked..this thing stinks...thanks samsung.... anyway...is there anyway to return to stock, I know I did it on MK2, just not sure on NAE and just dont wanna screw this thing up more than it is

Stock unrooted NAE? If so, download the tar that is on Dev section by random45. Use Odin to flash it. Back up anything important just in case.

I was having the same problem with sac's rom v2. I am now running Negalite WonderRom r19. Downloads are fast. I recommend this rom.

So I found the culpert. TWRP recovery. I went back to unrooted stock and started over.. TWRP seems to work great, but after flashing a couple roms, then restoring my Stock rooted version of 4.4.2.. I lost write to internal again
Last night started reading thru Sacs thread and found it to be an issue for some and not others. I still do not fully know, but in reading, some say TWRP works, just not with all roms

Just throwing this out there.. I've had no problems at all using Philz Recovery. Even with the ROMs that say TWRP is recommended. Its never let me down maybe worth a shot?!
