I believe it voids the warranty as you have made a change to the phone however with a one touch root app such as universal androot or x10 root, it is reversible and therefore you can unroot it at any time.
As for the updates, rooting does not affect them be it OTA or through SEUS.

So when you 'root' your phone is it wiped off when you update your phone? I have rooted my x10 but keep getting messages stating there is an update to 026 - by accepting this update will subsequently 'reset' the phone back without 'root'?

Yep, but thanks to the one click app it's not that big of a deal.

You're in the wrong forum. Unfortunate that XDA STILL hasn't given the Ray it's own form yet.. It deserves one.
Here's where the ray development stuff are (Except CM7):

That is more tricky and actually requires a but of extra skill you'll have to peel back stuff to get at the testpoint at the back of the phone etc etc... I personally didn't do it because I already had mine unlocked. You are welcome to try it.
Thread:

Let me know how you get on with it
PS: For those of us that have already unlocked our bootloaders, there's no point in performing this
wooohhhh, its again so complicated...will wait for some other quick method. Like we have something for our Xperia Arc

Do it and don't look back! I was never going to then did so just before 283 was released because I didn't want to go through the rigmarole of having to downgrade to upgrade just to root, and so glad I did because I might have ended up with the 0% battery issue, PLUS it makes things like rooting so much simpler, even simpler than an app imo.
What put me off was something screwing up with the boot loader, it's a natural fear, but with Alejandrissimo and Jinx13 on call (more or less A+J? ), a fix is only an internet (and required software) connection away.
Ray can't be gingerbreaked, as there is no 2.3.2 available for it.nso there shouldn't be security issues that can be used for rooting a s-on device.
Just go ahead and unlock it.
As stated above you won't look back.

Guys,
I want to ask same question again.............
Any way to ROOT Xperia RAY with locked bootloader
What about the ZergRush exploit? Doesn't that work for the ray?
The Xperia 2011 Easy Rooting Toolkit works and the Ray is in the compability list.
like what harfot said I'm pretty sure the zergrush method works for the whole 2011 xperia phones its easy to use aswell
Here are two videos I recorded today. The first one is pretty straight forward following the Vroot method. The second one gives answers to the most commonly bootloader/rooting/flashtool answers that I have been asked a million times in the past.
Thank you for your efforts making these, I am sure they will help.
In order to make it easier for people to find this information can you please post these in the guide threads that already exist in the dev section

Hi, Thank you for your great explanation!
Will I lose root if I flash FTF 14.1.G.1.524 firmware?

Yes, every time you flash a new firmware you will loose root (unless you find a prerooted ftf) . The newest firmware is 14.1.G.1.534 so just flash that one instead. Then go through the procedure again to regain root.
//////// Guide may be messy, will try to tidy them up from time to time. Kindly leave a comment if you see any errors. Credits of the development tools to its rightful owner(s). I'm not a dev, just someone who likes to flash (pun intended) and customise my devices. /////////
Update 1 : May or may not work with C6902. Chances are it won't as the files are for C6903 but it might work if you use the C6902 firmwares
Update 2 27/12 : Temporarily removed for revamp of the guide
Thanks for sharing complete guide

Hi Carbon, I cannot confirm if it give full root access on locked bootloader, however I am now on locked BL (relocked using Flashtool). And it's working as per, well, usual.
As mentioned in OP, I am not a dev nor am I fully aware on how partial root access will be like. At the moment, if you're referring to something like - locked BL not able to install Dual Recovery, it probably is as I'm not able to install any recovery at the moment. Troubleshooting with NUT and with unlocked BL (will update tomorrow on this, it's bed time.)
Edit : Chances are it's partial. Will look into this matter tomorrow. More updates to come tomorrow.
I wanted to know for those with locked bl do they have to unlock then relock boot loader?

This giude explains step by step how to root .290 FW with locked and unlocked Bootloaders and explains how to unlock BL.
It's a pretty good guide!
Sorry it is just a repost of someone else's work.

Apologies but can I know which part is a repost? I mean, I went through these steps personally without following any guides out there. I simply made my own guide as to post in my local forum however, thought it would be great to at least share the method for .290 root, is it wrong to share some info on how to keep/retain root? Also, I am not very sure if I see any guides that gives such information here on xda yet. Krab's rooting guide is for the older firmwares.
I simply used what resources available and give it back to the community. I'm sorry if this upsets you. I'll remove op if you insist that this is a repost.
Hope to hear from you soon.
the files you will need: MUST PATCH FILE.zip
but in the tutorial, you do not explain when to use the patch
I am on 4.3 and I didn't backup my TA so this thread do not help much. Nothing what I already know.
C6903_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf from installing flashtool stays in a loop and it's not sony's image and restarts again and again.
In the links you put the file is a zip C6903_14.2.A.0.290.patch but *. With flashtool can not flash.
Greetings.
Why are you attacking this guy?!
Oh no, he opened a thread - unlike many other guy who open threads just to say we have new update in update center - this one is really good and smart one.
Of course something will be repeated but this is a guide and NUT has ROM, that's the difference.
I must agree with some comments - XDA for Z1 isn't good, all the time we see bad comments and very little development.
In Xperia S section we had so much fun why can't we have that here?
Atmosphere just isn't right....
For a days I'm trying to force my self to do some theme MODs but if I'll get this kind of "tnx" than I'll keep it for myself.
We have great guys here, awesome MODers and DEVs let's show them a bit of respect and if something they made isn't for you - just skip it, don't spit it.
Moderators are here to say what's junk and what's O.K, I agree with @gregbradley - way toooooo much of "how to" that aren't finished but this guys are trying their best to help you.
So...tnx to @8geek and if someone knows better and can give us full root on 290 - awesome, let us see that...

Here is a video guide on how to get full root on bootloader locked Android 4.4.2 Sony Xperia Z1.
This will now work on model versions C6902/C6903/C6906/C6943

At the moment, I think that the only solution would be to backup apps and games is using an app called Helium. As far as I know that is the only working solution available on the market. Users have reported that the free version does not always work properly and that the safest would be to use the 5$ premium version of the app and to backup to a cloud storage, so I would recommend buying the premium app. Here is a link to the app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup.license&hl=en
You can backup your photos by either choosing cloud synching in Google+, Dropbox or any alternative storage or by transferring them over to your computer.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dropbox.android&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.plus&hl=en
Don't forget to backup your text messages as well. The following app works well:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&hl=en
And also any saved wifi networks using the following app:
