I have seen numerous complaints about the N5's stock camera software, but aside from a couple of threads here and here, there is no database on app testing results for the N5 on XDA. Hence this thread :good:. Please post what Play Store apps you have tried, what improvements you've seen, and anything that the app breaks. If you have proof, please post it; all proven or multiple user stated results will be added to a list in this OP to create a database.

ProCapture paid (per this thread):
Pros: Fast auto focusCons: No built in camcorder, HDR mode slower than stock N5
Camera Awesome (per this thread):
Pros: ability to turn on/off OIS, potentially faster focus (mixed reviews), IOS interfaceCons: IOS interface
awesome job. the best camera app I've used by far. faster than stock and great quality. and all for only 75p. thank you.

Today I tested Camera FV-5 Lite. pros: numerous settings, great quality, faster focus. Con's: Google overrides iso setting producing blur in low light.
Can somebody verify please? http://www.camerafv5.com

Have you actually tried using the settings? It never uses the ISO/shutter speed I set when taking a picture (and I get a solid green image at certain shutterspeeds). I don't think it's working right with N5 for the moment.
I also try the new VSCOcam. A lot of reviews said focus is faster but it seems slower than the stock camera app for me. And a lot of times it couldn't even achieve focus.
ProCapture seems to the best for N5 at the moment.
My only discontent with Pro Capture is there's no HDR mode on the Nexus 5 atm.
Camera FV-5 is way better at bringing you useful tools in photo taking, quick focus time, good photos, but also lacks HDR.
Snap camera has HDR, but I feel it lacks the same quick focusing time and quality that Camera FV-5 does. Camera Awesome just isn't up to par yet compared to any of the rest.
VSCO Cam is way too simple.
Focal (beta) is alright for everything but HDR. Quick focus, good capture quality, but lacks to polish the rest have.
That's my two cents.

I think you might have had your camera set to the 'S' mode, whatever that means. If you set it to 'P' program mode you should not get anymore green pictures.

It works on some settings - if you set it to 5" it works as it's supposed to. But not all of them are working.
Overall I think though Camera FV-5 is better than ProCapture. But I honestly don't see why everyone is disliking the stock camera app, I've tried:
Camera awesome, Procapture, focal, camera fv-5, snap camera, vsco cam and a better camera
The only one besides stock that has HDR is snap camera, and it's not very good at all.
The rest seem to focus the same for me, including stock. The only one with neat features seems to be camera awesome with being able to focus in one place and exposure levels based in another. Procapture has the same settings as stock pretty much, Camera FV-5 has some very nifty DSLR features which is why I'm keeping that installed. VSCO, snap camera, focal, and a better camera have a long ways to go before being a reliable camera for me.
I use Focal.
Seems like it speeds up the shot... This is all I need.
Hdr it's not my priority, for good pics, reflex is the answer, not a phone camera

I've got sgs around month ago and already tried many kernels and firmwares but neither of those deal with photo camera shots quality issues. Let me explain - I had Huawei u8220 before and the camera photo shots where nearly perfect, when I get to computer I will try to upload a couple of pictures to see. Now with this high end super phone I get photos of the same quality as my wife's simple nokia but 5mp instead... I wonder if this is hardware of software fault, and if it is software, maybe there is better app available for camera?

The SGS's camera is not the best in the world, but I've been able to make fairly good shots with it. But in the end; just with all phone cameras, it's a tiny sensor with lousy optics. Just use it for what it is for and only use it under the right circumstances (enough light, little movement) and you should be oke.
I don't understand alot of the negative opinons about the sgs camera, it seems perfect for a phone camera, better than all those htc ones and my old nokia n95 one by far, which is all I could really ask for.
don't know what you talking about really.
SGS has a great camera.
Compare the pictures taken by sgs on other websites with yours and see any diffference.

I have compared pictures before I purchased sgs and I saw that they are way worth than those from huawei but I thought that is because of taking picture conditions, besides I liked to have this phone,i still do, but here are two shots one from huawei and one from sgs,i didn't pick the best, just random.

The photo compression on the SGS is bad. It would be great if somebody fixedthat and the crappy filters on the video.
if that sgs camera sample is actually indicative of all the pics you take then there is something seriously wrong with your camera, I've never taken a pic that bad. Maybe you're picture quality is on normal, not super fine and its on a low res?
go to camera then go to settings. try to change the resolution from 600x480(not exact) to 2500x1900(not exact) or something like that. I think its a bug cause when i put mine to 2000x1900 it magically changes back to 800x600. just check if you are really using the full 5m.
i also checked the one you uploaded and its just 600x480. may you are just using .3m

the resolution was 2048x1536 and quality superfine why the image got smaller on the post? I dont know, will try to to find shots in approximately same condition. The size of Huawei's 3mp photo is slightly bugger than the SGSs 5mp. By the way, Huawei's camera was set on NORMAL image quality here (fine one would add some strange artefacts so, I never used it)

So what are you complaining about. You do not use SGS best quality but use the best quality of the Huwaei. The SGS is still much better if you compare. Both cameras is set to 3mp still the SGS is both sharper (you used the same number of pixel and they should be equal), have correct color, better contrast etc than the Huawie and still it is only roughly the half potential of the SGS (5mp versus 3mp). Strange thread the title should be why does my Huawei take so crapy pictures.
I think the problem is that you seem to prefer saturated pictures, the only problem is that the SGS camera looks 'dull' in comparison? Go fiddle with the settings?
Also, do you still have your huawei? Why don't you take pictures of the same subject matter to compare, instead of taking entirely different types of photos?

I've found that using Vignette, the SGS camera takes better photos.
Always remember, it's not the camera that makes a photographer, especially if you've comparing smartphone cameras. If we were talking about various prime lenses and the like, then it's a lot more serious.
Also, factor in that almost all photos nowadays go through post-processing if you want it to look good. I personally feel that there is nothing wrong with that, if one is just to touch up the photo.
Hence my inclination towards programs like Vignette, which do a lot of the post-processing effects that I like, all within the camera. Excellent feature of Vignette is that it can save both original JPEG (which considerably looks better than the default camera), and the edited JPEG.
Here are some random photos taken using Vignette:
Vignette01
Vignette02
Vignette03
Vignette04
I am in no way affiliated with the makers of the program, nor am I being paid to this. These are all my side on things. I hope it was informative.
Im also using vignette and noticed that right before the photo is taken when the app is trying to focus theres a split second that you will see the images that are very very sharp and great quality, after the photo is snapped it looks dull.
I have written this guide quite some time back during the first week of launch of this Galaxy S3 and forgotten to share this here in xda too. Hope this is able to help some newbie on using their S3 camera. Advance users probably will find my guide too basic.

probably have to do with the brightness of the object u r shooting i guess. indoors with ISO 200 still give quite an amount of noise too.

yes, and no. the One X is not a better shooter when compared to S3. Reason bcz One X is not able to capture as much detail and sharpness as S3. The One X is only capable of getting a cleaner image during low light, thanks to its f2.0 lens. Other than that, S3 is a better shooter.
iPhone 4S on the other hand comes in neck in neck. it wins S3 in indoor shots, thanks to its f2.4 lens. But it's a no match for sharpness and details as well to the S3. the metering on 4S however seems better.

Thanks for the guide It whas very usefull
Strangely when the update came the camera is getting worse not better , yes more options and modes but a lot of distortion .......
I'm talking about the LFB one....
A small question for those who have moved over to an AOSP rom, does the camera take longer to snap a photo? I ask this because obviously the Samsung Rom was built for the zero shutter lag and I have seen demos of the speed in which it snaps photos. But in some videos I have seen CM9 on the S3, it seems when hitting the button it has a small delay where it stills tries to focus before it snaps.
thanks!
ps: getting my S3 on Monday and debating which rom to use as I probably would like to mess around with the new S3 roms.

hmm.. i don't really get what u mean by distortion. my understanding of distortion is the lens distortion where u get straight lines becomes curvy like a barrel distortion for wide angle lens, or the fish eye effect for fish eye lens.
in your sample picture, i cant really get the distortion that u mean. did u mean the deviation away from normal exposures? if that's the case, then it is because most of the subjects in your picture are black/dark colours. Hence, the camera's metering is fooled, by thinking you are shooting in low light and hence increases the exposure. it happens to all camera, it's a weakness of digital metering.
Apparently, DxO Mark just gave out a score to Xperia Z1 and amazingly, just sits at 2nd place behind the Pureview 808 in overall Mobile Camera Ranking! :victory:
And that's without the "firmware updates" that will supposedly improve the camera!
I can't post the link as I'm still within the new user limitation of posting outside links. But if you're curious to see it, just do a quick google search for DxOMark and Xperia Z1!
More details:
Actually, the stills for Z1 stands at 5th place, however the video was deemed to be outstanding and the best in the mobile cameras and just 2nd place in their database behind the GoPro Hero 3!
If you're wondering what happened to the 1020, they also have an article on it and while they deemed the stills to be amazing and 2nd only to the 808. However, video was said to be lacking.
What are your thoughts?

I guess the big sensor is the key here. Dxomark doesn't reflect the real life though. I'm not very happy with the z1 camera... far too noisy especially at 20mp. Still better than my older nexus 4 anyway.

Ah ok. That's good then. Shooting at 20MP especially in low-light results in (I'm not sure why) worse pictures than shooting at 8MP 4:3 .. in my tests, it resulted in darker images.
I also like to shoot at 8MP 4:3 to take advantage of the oversampling and leave the rest of the settings to Auto. One thing though is that I turn off the Stabilizer. I found that turning it on resulted in the camera choosing a much higher ISO than intended compared when leaving it off. This may be due to its detection of slight handshake movements and it tries to compensate by upping the ISO in favor of a faster shutter speed.

Yes shooting at 20mp is useless. Pics are so noisy... it's a shame. At 8mp the image quality is pretty good and yes, with the stabiliser on the iso is higher for that reason. But I prefer a bit more noise other than a blurred image.

Nice. What metering and focus are you using? Particularly for macro / night shots. I find that using Single Auto Focus setting doesn't keep the whole image in focus and just the middle part, but I find that the multi-auto focus setting doesn't do too well either particularly in macro shots. Currently, I shoot in landscape mode when shooting macro.
I'm using metering average (it seems to do a better job with white balance as well). About focus I always use touch focus... I like to choose what I want in focus...
I love th bokeh management of the lens.. look at this for example

Yeah, I know... but as I said I prefer a slighty noiser image than a blurred one. I'll try again without stabiliser anyway.

Try night mode can reduce noise.

Yeah. The Z1 does lovely bokeh.
here is theDxO report for the Z1 which i could not find on DxO's website.

What i find telling from that review is this graph.
Above 80 lux the S4 shots have more 'texture' than the Z1.
Contrary to what people might think the Z1 has the best noise reduction indoors.

Not much of a fan of them anymore, after I wrote to them to see if they would do the Xperia Z test again after Sony updating the firmware to fix the bad camera quality, they didn't even respond to me. On the flip side it is Sony's fault for shipping substandard equipment, get all the important things right first, especially the camera when they are making such a big deal about how amazing it is.
DxO finally got around to testing the G2. Overall G2 placed 6th. However in the photo section it ties with the Z1 in terms of score. A closer examination of the parameters tested shows the Z1 edges ahead slighlty.
Where the Z1 comes out ahead : Exposure & Contrast, Colour, Noise Reduction, Flash
Where the G2 comes out ahead : Autofocus, Texture, Artifacts
4 > 3 or Z1 ahead by a little.
What lets the G2 down is video, where its ranked 15th to the Z1's 2nd place.
If you consider phones alone, Z1 has the best video out there.
Now we have to wait for DxO to test the Note 3 to see whether it will affect the Z1's ranking.
Sorry to jump here like that, I don't even know all this stuff but after read what you guys saying is like the camera on Z1 was made for experienced people who know how to set up the device. This is a phone anyway and I like to go around and shooting everything but almost of the pictures are crap. That how shouldn't be with a camera on a phone with 20mpx.

The IMX214 is a very capable sensor, and 1+'s ISP (Qualcomm?) looks quality too. Of course much will depend on speed, reliability and low light, I'll be looking to find more shots.

I certainly hope that with real world conditions it can deliver quality like shown above.
The best part is the 2 sensors that i have noticed that perform beautifully are the IMX179 and IMX214. Obvious 214 will be even better for sure.. Really hope they launch the phone around the different parts of the world soon.
Low light capabilities are incredible, if you search you will understand that how its better than A Nikon D3100 in low light.

A good Sony IMX sensor with a proper lens and image signal processor can bring wonderful images, see iPhone 5S. Which is why I'm puzzled to this day how come Sony's own Xperia Z, Z1 and even some Z2 shots look so over-processed, showing some lens inconsistencies and some SW errors too. Both the Oppo Find 7 and the OnePlus One launch with the new IMX214, and I'm curious how will they fare compared to other Exmors, the Lumias and ISOCELL. So far it is promising.

I agree with you on the Sony Devices part. I have seen that actually. Sony likes to complicate stuff, i really don't know why. Where they can have a easy way to fi thing, they go the other way. Trust me they have 3-4 different apps for the camera. You tell me who in 2014 does that?! lol .. And I read an article, the ISOCELL vs the IMX179 comparison. (Here). The IMX was better
I really need to have a look at the Lumia's though, they have almost DSLR type quality..
The S5 camera is much, MUCH better than the Nexus 5 to be frank. But the IMX214 is a new generation Sony sensor.
aren't you guys a bit scared about the camera app?
i've tried few phones with cyanogen camera app and they were all a lot worst than the original rom camera app (samsung devices especially)
at least this time they are working on their hardware so i really hope it'll be a lot better

Depending on scene and light conditions, today's smartphones can take impressive photos, see some form my S5 review. As far as dynamic range and per pixel sharpness, 1+1 fits right in among the best of Android photography based on what I've seen so far.

Can someone please explain me the minimum and maximum shutter speed of the Nexus 6P in third party apps?
I have a OnePlus 2 at the moment and I can take up to 30 seconds of long exposure, before with my OnePlus 1 even 60 seconds.
Is this something I can find in the Nexus 6P through a third party camera app?
A detailed explanation would be appreciated.
Hi. Please Download Proshot camera app or Manual camera app. Proshot even has a bulb mode, not so impressive though. I have not noticed anything like 30 seconds or more. Have not tried other camera apps.

On manual camera the slowest shutter speed is 1/5. I don't see why anyone would need a 30 second exposure on a phone. That lobe of an exposure would only be useful on a DSLR in very select situations.

1/5 is really sad. I expected more, can this be fixed by software you think?
I disagree with your opinion. Slow shutter on the Oneplus One and Two is awesome (see pics below both taken with the One). Especially with a good sensor. And I am in situations where I need it a lot.

The sensor in the 6P would likely take in too much light given the pixel size therefore making the pictures look bad. If I use a 5 second exposure on my DSLR in a situation like the ones you posted it would be a white picture. The sensor size is important to consider (especially when its wide open). I can't definitively say whether or not the 6P will do the same, but it does have a large senor/pixel size for a phone.

True but I think the Nexus 6p could benefit from 1-5 seconds exposures instead of maximum 1/5. You think this can be solved in software or is it hardware limit of the sensor?

It's a software limitation; I tested the other camera app and it only let's me go down to .2s (1/5s) so google likely did that for a reason.

If that's really the make/break factor then you should reconsider owning a phone. It's a great device and just because you can't take a 30s picture doesn't mean its a bad phone. I find it absurd that such a nominal feature is the tipping point for people but its not my money to spend.
I don't use my phone as my primary camera (I have a DSLR for that), so a trivial software feature that could likely be added in isn't a big deal. Software limitations are easier to overcome than hardware ones, but I recommend you reconsider why you want the phone if that is a key factor. I don't know how many long exposure night pictures you take, but it must be a significant amount to be that big of a factor. The limitation is likely in place because of how large the sensor/pixels are as I mentioned. The camera takes in a lot of light and having a long exposure (even 1/5s) is very bright at night, and can capture great pictures.
I'm in no way trying to be rude about it (I know the comments above might suggest that), but I don't think a small software limitation should steer people away from an excellent phone. I don't use 3rd party camera apps despite owning a handful of them because the stock one takes the best pictures in my opinion. I will try a few other camera apps that I own, but I don't think it will be beneficial to use a long exposure even if its enabled via a software tweak.
Here are some pictures I've taken with my Nexus 5X/6P (both have the same sensor) at night. https://goo.gl/photos/onDRS4sEtrV3QS867

Thanks for explaining. I don't take your comments as rude but rather learnful. I approach my phone as the ultimate Swiss army knife. I take pictures with it, I stream my media from home to anywhere in the world, it holds my whole online life in the cloud, make payments without it and many other things. Until now I've been able to postpone buying a separate camera. First I owned Galaxy S1 then S2, then OnePlus 1 and now 2. These cameras are all great if you know what you are doing. The OnePlus really made it happen thanks to heavy community development and support, and especially camera tweaks. I was hoping to find this in the Nexus as well. Apparently not (yet). But I'm turning to Nexus anyway because of great software support and features. I hope my camera tests can postpone the need for buying a separate camera for a while...

I understand where you're coming from now, and I appreciate the explanation. I tend to speak rather bluntly which some people take the wrong way. I went from the S3>Note 3>G3>Nexus 6, Zenfone2, Moto X 2014 PE, S5>Nrcuw 6P. I've owned more phones than I listed, but that's a good summary. I feel the camera on the 6P is leaps and bounds better than any of the other ones including the Nexus 6 which has the same sensor as the OP1. I think a software tweak is certainly possible if you find a developer willing to take a look at it. I really can't see myself using a phone as my primary camera even though it takes great pictures; there are times where a phone will never work because its limited by several factors. If you like the phone give it a try because you can always send it back within 14 days (google store orders) or 30 days for Amazon orders. The worst that could happen is you don't end up liking it
This indeed is sad. With a 10-second exposure time, one can do a lot. I've won prizes using my Lumia 1520 which allowed a maximum of 4 seconds. Even on a phone that allows us to go out there in very dark (I mean literally dark) places. The other day I bought a Meizu M2 Note just because it has 10 second exposure time. Although I enjoy my Lumia 1520 and Note 3, I find myself always curious what I can do using Meizu M2 Note, just because it has an awesome exposure time. It's just a 200$ device. Believe me, that amount of shutter speed makes the shutter bugs feeling contended and curious and consequently happy. So why not?
So as of now LG is the way to go for best manual camera performance on Android. I've used my friends phone and it's awesome unless you can stand a windows phone. LG V10 is going to be my next phone. So I strongly suggest LG V10. Good manual controls let us go crazy and curious like a kid. That's the best thing that can happen.
Hello
Hello People.
So i wasted 3 sleepless nights trying to figure out all what was discussed here. may be i should have read this before.
I cant believe this, 1/5 seconds? really? other brands are muscling 10, 30, 60 seconds. and here we are with 1/5.
I am coming from Note 5. I dont know its specs but the phone camera allowed me 10 seconds at max/ slowest shutter speed.
I hope some devs can play with libs and bring better support to camera app.
My old Xperia z2 recently got shutter speed control without camera2 api. So never give up hopes on developers.
I just hope they bring support before i leave this phone.
