Download Light Flow Lite or the paid version from the Play Store and you set different colors for lots of things.

I flashed one from here worked on SlimKat 4.4.2 with no problems

Yes, a vague question. If you're meaning the Google Experience Launcher, yes you can. You can even do it without root. If rooted, install CM 11- comes with the N5 launcher.
