Received Kitkat OTA update to my plain vanilla Nexus 7 4G 2013 (not rooted, not-anything, running 4.3.1), noticed images missing in Play Store, facebook app, small but annoying things i've forgotten now. Decided to take the long march and wipe and install the Kitkat factory image (flash-all.bat went flawlessly, this version: 4.4 (KRT16S) md5:20bee0445c67aa45c002a14e4bac1d77 sha-1:bd6c92418035598c0815d19a2b21066d3f6fe9b6, checked that the hashes do match).
After this, images are still missing in Play Store ("Couldn't load screenshots.") but worse, some apps don't update at all (Maps, Google Drive) and many complain of no connection, for example Hangouts: Signing in -> Couldn't connect to the server, or Youtube.
In Chrome, google.com loads just fine, but going to engadget brings up the page with no images at all despite several reloads (request desktop site ticked on), same with youtube. But some sites work all ok.
I'm connected via 5 GHz wifi, other devices don't have any trouble through this network. Now also tried 2.4 GHz, same issues. Unable to try mobile data due to weak signal.
Any ideas what is wrong, how to fix these issues, what can i do to troubleshoot? And if i decide to go back to 4.3.1, how to prevent OTA from loading? My #1 objective is to gain the use of this tablet back.
Just flashed back to 4.3.1 and everything works perfectly.
3rd time's a charm, so flashed 4.4 again. Same results as described in first post. This 4.4 thing don't work.
Even when installing Kitkat with wipe, Play Store works very erroneously. Maps and Google Drive updates do not succeed, return error 495. Have trouble installing new applications, most do not install, try to download for a long time, then abort. Hangouts will never connect. On a fresh wiped system?!?
NONE of this happened before the Kitkat OTA upgrade. It's like a virus: Make a clean install with wipe for 4.3.1, and Kitkat OTA hogs all the bandwidth immediately...
Play store images loading issue has finally gone, but these still persist:
-Google Drive will not update
-Google Maps will not update
-Cannot sign in to Hangouts, neither before nor after updating Hangouts
-Cannot download many applications from Play Store, the downloads never start (no percentage)
This is unbelievable for Kitkat straight out of the factory image.

Hi, a couple of days ago I started getting this error when installing apps. At the beginning it was only a couple of apps that didn't work but it got worse and now no apps work at all. I've done EVERYTHING to fix this, the only thing that works is using a VPN to change my location, that is it.
What I've done:
-Cleared google play store data
-Removed google account and re-entered it
-Factory reset including system then re-installed the ROM
-Switched between 4 different ROMs
-Tried all kernels too
1.Stock 4.3 google edition
2.Battery King v.5 TW ROM Android 4.2.2
3. CM 10.2 Android 4.3
4. JSS15J Pure AOSP ROM Android 4.3
I live in Canada and when i change my location and IP Adress with Hideninja VPN I can install any apps. The only problem is now I can't even get that app and when i could my download speed was Extremely slow.
Anyone in Canada or anywhere else got this problem randomly a couple days ago?
Yeah so basically everytime I try to download an app or game that needs to download additional data (Like Asphalt 8, or Ivona Amy or Fast and Furious 6) the entire download will complete, it will finish downloading till 100% even the additional data, and then it will suddenly just get an error saying 921 could not complete download. I have tried various different fixes to no avail. This happend all the way since stock 4.2. Flashed factory 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.4.2 and the problem still occurs. On 4.3 it had become fixed for a while but again on 4.4.1/4.4.2 stock or custom roms, the same problem happens. I clean wipe the device and everything, even used different play store accounts and made a new play store account but the error still happens.
Thanks in advanced for any help, im really stumped and there is literally no one on the internet with this problem lol.
Hi all,
Been having some fairly major issues with this tablet recently. Sorry for the back story, but I'm unsure whether it's related or not...
I primarily use the tablet to watch videos on while I'm commuting from an external USB stick. Always used to be 100% fine, running AOKP ROM for around a year. In the last month or so, I would watch a video and it would work for a couple of minutes, then the video would freeze and the audio soon after. To fix it I'd have to close MX Player, and unplug/plug back in the USB stick. Then it would happen again.
I therefore copied files onto the internal storage, and didn't have problems with this (a 4GB video file would copy with no issues). Then watch from internal storage with no issues.
I decided to try a different ROM and see if it helped the USB OTG issues. This is where the real problems started. I changed to a different Android 4.4 ROM (Purity I think?), and had Google Play Store crashing soon after starting, if I tried to download an app. After the initial crash, I would continually get 'Google Play Store has stopped working' messages. Rebooting etc made no difference. I would also get the same issue if I tried downloading an APK through the built in browser (it crashes).
I have since tried about 5 different ROMs (Android 4.2, 4.4 and 5.0 based) flashed through TWRP 2.8.4.0, with different Gapps, each time performing full or partial wipes/factor resets.
I have also tried restoring to stock settings through NTK, flashing factory images of 4.2, 4.4 and 5.0 builds through the 'restore stock and unroot' option (whatever it is called). I have also re-locked and unlocked the bootloader again.
Basically, I don't know what else I can do. Every time I get into a new ROM, I complete the initial setup, I can't go into Google Play store without the app force closing. I can't think of what would be causing this if it's the same between a lot of different ROMs, with the same issue.
Does anyone have any ideas..?
Thanks in advance.

Are you sure you're using correct gapps versions? They're specific gapps packages for 4.2, 4.4 AND 5.0.
If you're sure of the above, then yes, I suggest you capture `adb logcat` output when Play Store is crashing. Then share the log with us.
Basically some of the components of play store are located in the system partition and most of custom roms don't come with gapps packages you need therefore to flash them after installing a new rom. PA provides very nice and up to date solution. PA gapps on Google.
Sent from my Xiaomi MI2s
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I had flashed correct Gapps packages for each ROM when required, but was still having the issue.
Somehow, after many hours spread over the last week, last night I seem to have fixed it.
I had suspected that it was an issue with a corrupt partition, (or permissions, or something!) on the internal storage, as it was only when I tried to download something that the browser crashed, and Play Store would generally only start crashing after a first time browsing with it. Also sometimes from within Recovery I wouldn't be able to wipe data properly (it would complete almost instantly, sometimes not removing a previous ROM...). Sometimes it did seem to work properly though.
I can't pin down exactly what I did that fixed it though. I tried 2 things at once: I manually wiped each of /system, /cache, etc through fastboot in the bootloader, and I also (from adb in recovery) manually did mkdir /data and mkdir /data/media
I'm not sure which of these worked, but I flashed a ROM and Gapps (AOKP again), and I haven't had any crashing so far...
I'm afraid to flash any other ROMs as it seems to be working now, so I think I'll leave it!
Probably should have looked at the adb logcat output, but didn't think of that while I was still having the issue.
Thanks
Hello,
I just upgraded from Kitkat 4.4.2 to Lollipop 5.0.1 via Kies. The phone was rooted and became unrooted, of course. Everything went fine with the upgrade and re-rooting after some trouble shooting.
However, I noticed, that after auto-update of Google Play services, that those would always stop working after reboot. Before that update, everything was fine. So I did a factory reset, and even flashed the unrooted version again, but this did not help for long since Google Play services would start crashing again after the next update.
My Lolipop 5.0.1 version is I9505XXUHOB7, the working stock version of Google Play services is 6.5.something, while the version that I got via auto-update is the newest 7.0.99. After some backup restoring and factory resetting I finally figured out that I could revert Google Play services to stock version after removing the device admin setting, and flash any version from apkmirror.com. Now I know that all versions of Google Play services above 7.x and newer definitely *will* crash on my S4 with the new Lollipop.
Does anybody know about this? As I wrote, this happens on a clean unrooted install after factory reset as well. The last working version of Google Play services for me is com.google.android.gms-6.7.76_(1745988-438)-6776438-minAPI21. Older versions will not crash, but I will keep messages that Maps, Gmail or such things require a newer version. Now I am wondering which update of those apps will break my phone again...
Google will automatically restore settings related to your device when you sign in to your Google Play account, thus a factory reset does nothing here. You need to wipe Google Play Services' data, preferably after the update to the latest version. Then reboot and see if anything changes.
Thx for the reply, but I when the phone asks, I always deny to store anything on Google servers. I have my own backups. And, it worked with the initial install and only stopped working after the Google Play services update. Would that not mean that every user must be affected? I read a lot that Google Play services stop working recently, but no apparent explanation.
Edit: I just noticed that, without me doing anything, Google Play services got auto-updated to the faulty new version again, crashing again. Very annoying. I tried the solution with deleting all data, but that helped noting. I reverted to the last functioning version manually.
Is there a way to prevent this auto-update?
Just had a chat with Samsung Support (there seems to be no way to officially address this issue with Google directly). They were not aware of the problem until now and walked me through a couple of steps. Unfortunatelly, nothing helped. They promised to address the issue to Samsung development. Hope this helps, but small hope it is...
Hey guys,
Wanted to try and find out whether anyone else is experiencing issues with Google Play Services (9.4.52) crashing after upgrading to Nougat OTA?
I thought I may have a botched install so tried the following:
- Cleared cache
- Reset and didn't restore from backup
- Reset and only installed stock apps
- Safe mode
- Cleared Google Play Services data
- Unsubscribed from all Google beta testing apps
I still can't figure this one out, even after a hard reset back to stock it still kicks up a play services crash about once ever 10-20 minutes... very weird... and frustrating
Anyone else had this issue? Or got any suggestions?
I had the exact same problem after accepting OTA yesterday via the beta program. I was on 6.0.1 on my 6P (no root, no custom rom, locked boot-loader). All Google Apps and Services crash including Messenger (SMS). I performed a hard reset with no luck. I flashed OTA with no luck. Only solution was to unlock boot-loader, flash recovery, and go back to stock. I will try again today.

Will try that method instead, the crashes have died down again but I can't find any correlation between specific apps and what's causing the crashes! If I find a solution I'll post.
I think there may be a problem with the final release. It seems Google pulled 7.0 from their factory images site. I downloaded 7.0 for nexus 6, 6P and 9 earlier today and only the download for the Nexus 9 is still available. I don't know which version is giving you a problem but on the Nexus 6P Google earlier posted version MTC20F. I was going to flash it this evening but I think I'll wait and see what version they post back to the factory image site.
Google has finally posted the OTA and Full ROM images for 7.0. Both have the exact same problem on my 6P. All Google Services and Apps crash and the phone reboots randomly (often). I am at a loss. Obviously issues exist with 7.0 and 6P. Google seriously needs to address this non-sense.
