[Q] Nexus 4 Help - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I'm having an issue that i need help with. Someone accidentally deleted all the photos in the gallery on my wife's Nexus 4. Is there anything i can do, i was trying some recovery software but it hasn't worked, I had the Dumpster app installed on phone phone prior, but that app is crap since it did nothing. I've been reading somethings that i can try but she needs to be rooted which she is not. If i root her phone i know all her data will be wiped, and I'm not sure if doing that will further reduce the chances of recovery by wiping data in the rooting process. Is there anything else i can do. Are there any places i can take the phone to professionally recover the data? Or any other options we can try. She's heartbroken at losing the last month and a half of pictures (fortunately earlier ones were backed up.) Thanks for any help you can give.

Do you have any rom back ups on cwm etc. Flash and you ought to get them as data is saved.
Very sad it happens to me so I got Dropbox and linked it to camera, making sure that it's set to update of phone data. That's saved me many times.

Restore backup to second Aria?

Long time reader, first time poster; also new to Android.
Having a winner of a week; already broke my Aria. Phone and screen are still functional but there is some pretty significant physical damage. I've got a new one on the way but I'd like to make the setup as pain free as possible.
I flashed attn1's Liberated ROM the day I got it and have spent the week tweaking and setting and installing, etc. If I want to retain all of the apps, settings, etc. can I backup the broken phone and load it onto the new one? I assume I'll have to get into Clockwork to do it but I'm hoping that that's the extent of it.
Any advice is much appreciated.
I don't own the Aria, but based on experience with Milestone and Nexus One:
1) A complete nandroid backup restored to a second identical phone *should* give you everything back. The only catch is some apps may care about the change in your IMEI number and complain.
2) Take a Titanium backup as well. This will help you restore data to specific applications. If you have the donate version, then it will also help you restore Android Market links to the apps so you get proper updates.
Good point about the IMEI; I wouldn't have caught that. I will take a look at Titanium; good software is worth it.
New unit arrives tomorrow. I'll update once I'm finished.
Thanks for the pointers!
Got the second Aria last Tuesday.
TitaniumBackup ended up being all that I needed. I did get the donate version but market links had stayed intact anyway so the necessary backup/restore can be done with the free version.
Root/flash took only about 15 minutes this time, as opposed to a couple hours with the first Aria. I ended up using Liberated_B003 as opposed to a Nandroid backup of the first phone (B002).
Sense had some trouble syncing contacts/facebook at first. It didn't seem to accept TitaniumBackup restore of some user data (Security issue?). All settings transferred fine except for the unlock pattern; just had to reset it. Swype had to be reinstalled from scratch as well; it recognized that it was a different phone. That's it after a week; pretty painless.
Thanks again!

[Q] Phone seems to be infected by a Trojan

A few days ago my phone arrived from Ebay. I set it up and all was OK until I put it on the wireless charger. Then I noted that someone started to remotely operate the phone - to switch applications and so on.
During the set-up I upgraded to 4.3 and installed stuff from big and known companies (Facebook, Microsoft, etc.), all from Google Play. I haven't installed anything else. Usually I am very careful with what I install on my devices because I've been developing software for long time and have some experience with security (although this is my first Android phone).
After I noted the issue I restored the phone to its factory settings, installed even less apps, however I experienced the same. The hacker even wrote something playful.
Could you pls tell me how to find out what is going on? Like how was it possible to put a Trojan that would survive an Android update and a factory restore? How to find the Trojan and so on. I later installed some antivirus/antimalware that reported that the phone is clean.
Thank you.

Weird! What did the hacker wrote if I may ask?
I assume this is AndroRat, you can google on how to remove it (I wouldn't know).
Keep is updated!

Factory restore doesn't touch tree system partition, so if the offending app was placed there resetting won't do anything.
Download the factory images from Google and flash them. It will revert you to complete stock

He wrote something in the sort of "Flipped every turtle". I'll quote him after I manage to identify the hack (if I manage
Disconnect it from the net whilst you investigate to protect data

as said above disconnect from wifi and remove your sim card. First thing i would do is use one of the toolkit to unlock or lock bootloader (it completely wipes everything); then do a factory reset. That should do the the trick. If the problem persist contact the police.
Locking our unlocking your bootloader doesn't wipe everything. It wipes userdata. It doesn't touch the system partition. As I said previously. The only surefire way to ensure a complete wipe is either to fully wipe all partitions and install a custom Rom.
Or if you wish to stay stock, download the nexus 4 stock images and flash them.
Doing this will erase all user data & all system data
It will then put stock files back on

It seems like someone else is having the same behavior with their phone. Maybe it has something to do with the type of wireless charger.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440115
It's probably just wireless charger bugging up the capacitive screen, try the stuff from above and when you flash a new image don't use the wireless charger for few days and see if it still happens.

[Q] Play store breaks Cyanogenmod?

Hi everyone,
This morning when wake up I noticed a lot of applications were stopping ("XYZ has stopped") - including Google Keep. Also, many app/system settings were suddenly missing from the phone. I had to go through the whole process of reinstalling CM10, realizing that my Nandroid backup (made with OBackup) was in CWM format, rendering it unusable with TWRP (or this is what I, being pretty much a newb in the ROM world, understand from the situation).
A couple weeks ago something similar happened : my defy would bootloop at the CM logo.
This is starting to be exasperating a bit. But the only thing I can think of is that now I noticed I have Play Store 4.4.21 on the Defy - whereas on my Nexus 7 I have 4.3.11. Hence the version on my Defy seems to be the one that just came out. Could Play Store updating itself be causing the problems I'm having on my Defy? Why do I now have the new version if I just flashed CM10 a couple minutes ago, and why would it be working correctly now?
I already googled everything I could think of relating to this and couldn't come up with an answer. That is to say, I'm pretty much clueless about all this!
Thanks..

There are 2 possible things going on here:
problems with android's data sync with google's services. (this morning there was a diffused malfunction, at least here in Italy)
the infamous CM10's data corruption bug (see details in the bug list). it especially happens if you let completely discharge your phone. Symptoms match with yours
Since the data corruption bug is still under investigation, the best workaround is to keep a (weekly?) data backup.
After a data corruption, reformat in ext4 through the recovery's data tool and then:
reflash rom and gapps
restore your data
Well both times CM broke my phone's battery wasn't empty at all (the last time it was charging...)
When you refer to the sync problem I experienced it on my N7 yesterday, but it seems nowhere as dangerous as to be able to completely break the OS.
Oh well anyway, seems like CM10 isn't quite ready for being a daily driver.. I'll simply learn how to flash/restore backups correctly and as fast as possible it seems!

The only thing that really bothers me is that I never thought I'd lose so much time in rooting/modding my old defy.. I've spent countless hours on XDA/other forums, and yesterday I even had to restore the (almost bricked) defy with rsdlite after (incorrectly) trying to put CWM to restore my otherwise unusable backup. Then, when I had succeeded in putting CWM, it would totally refuse to restore, complaining about unmountable /system!
I do understand that its totally my choice to root/mod my devices, but with cell phones becoming more and more essential nowadays in everyday life, it seems to me that everyone almost has to become an android developer to survive!

can i root nexus 6p, keep all content including apps, app settings & system settings?

can i root nexus 6p, keep all content including apps, app settings & system settings?
Im having 2 major issues with my nexus 6p (since i got it) , yet huwawei refuses to give me support due to the fact that i bought the phone in the US and use it outside the US.
1. issue is that noise cancellation issue that make the other end of the call hear me very poor.
2. i really don't know if anyone encountered it, but once every 10 min or so my internal memory goes missing - which means no content in my gallery or music library etc.
i read i can disable the noise cancellation if i root the device, and i hope it will some how fix the other issue as well.
but, i just don't have the time or the energy to reinstall and reconfig everything (i can see myself only dealing with copying the photos and music back to my device) - i have 2 new born babies and no strength at all .
can anyone tell me if there's any way to backup everything ( including apps, app settings & system settings) -> root the device -> restore everything back on the rooted device?
thanks in advance!

Is your Bootloader unlocked? If it is, the answer is yes. If it is not, the answer is no, unfortunately.

Technically, rooting the phone doesn't wipe anything. But in order to root you need to unlock your bootloader, which wipes the whole device, there's no way around this. Here's my guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
You should unlock it. Everybody's got pics and what not, don't be so clingy. If you want, back up pics with quickpic. I used to be clingy with like you, but after you wipe it through bootloader unlock you can put some new junk on it.
Thanks
Thanks for your replies.
My Bootloader is not unlocked.
Do you know of any PC/Android app That will get me close to backing up all my stuff?
thanks again

The only reliable methods of backing up your apps require root.

Restore erased data after unlocking bootloader for Moto X Pure XT1575? :(

:crying:
Hey there, anyone able to lend a helping hand?
Unlocked bootloader for my Moto X Pure XT1575, then only realized that it erased all my data on my phone...
Is there any way to restore or rescue those photos and videos? Had some important files needed it back badly... :crying:
Thanks in advance!
I would sure hope that wiping data is permanent for security reasons. I've looked at the instructions and they clearly state that all data will be lost, not sure how you could miss it.
I screwed up and did this once. Always back up everything to two separate locations before doing something like this. That's the lesson I learned.
Well, suck it up and read the instructions next time. Did you have back up turned on in "Photos" app? Remember, read it at least twice before doing anything.

Sorry, unless you had your photos and videos setup to sync on your account they are gone.

Nothing you can do. This is the reason I use a sd card as removable storage as well as auto backup options to google drive when plugged in. If I manually restore/wipe, or do something that will do it automatically, I do not have any worries. If my phone is lost/stolen, dies on me, or sd card fails (which I hope never does) I'm still covered.
