Can't update from 4.3 Using stock kernel ( swapped from franco to install the ota)
Tried CWM and TWRP, both fail.
here what happens: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6a1oesuwa3zgk1h/2013-11-14%2004.12.43.jpg?m
the same problem, the same CWM version
Not sure if it helps, but I followed this guide and now I am on KitKat
Download the JWR66Y factory image, extract everything and flash the system.img in fastboot mode, which should restore any changes made to the system partition. Try again after that
I'm having the same issue. I was on JWR66V and tried to update to 4.4 in cwm but it wanted me to be on JWR66Y... so after much hunting around I finally found a working JWR66Y flash able zip and was able to update to that.
However, I noticed that supersu got screwed up in the process, saying it couldn't find binaries. I downloaded and flashed the latest supersu, but that had no effect. I figured I would go ahead and try updating to 4.4 anyway and fix the root issue later...
The 4.4 update seemed to be going OK in cwm until I hit that same issue you did at about 75%. I've seen elsewhere that certain versions of supersu have been causing update problems. My only other thought is maybe I need to update my cwm to a newer version.

Why not getting directly the kitkat-image and flash boot.img and system.img in fastboot mode? No further update needed ...

Hello mates,
this morning my nexus 7-wifi (unlocked bot not rooted. w/ CWM) said me there is a system update for new android os. Kitkat.
Then i install the update without getting any CWM backup.
Zip file started to be installed in CWM and it processed all install. steps successfully.
However when the progress bar reach to %100, it said something like "...status 7.... installation aborted" (do not remember clearly).
And after reboot i come across a new boot animation (kitkat's new animation i think) which does not end up to a system start or an error message.
Now,
what should i do to complete installation of kitkat?
Thanks in advance.

I did the same exact thing that you did and experienced the same error. Luckily, I came across a stickied thread, ""Flashing a factory image with fastboot / return to stock" and followed the instructions EXACTLY and.. it worked! It took me back to 4.3 which was great because at lease tablet was working again! (I had tried everything else I could think of!) What was funny was that within 2 minutes of the tablet up and running again I received the OTA push for 4.4!
I would strongly suggest following the instructions posted in the thread I mentioned above as they worked perfectly.

Hello buddy,
thank you for the feedback. But i do not want to lose my data in the tablet. So, first i will try to fix this without wiping data.
Currently i install adb files to my pc.
And i managed to find the zip file i need to upgrade from 4.3 to 4.4 without losing any data.
If i can flash this zip file via adb i will be ok. but i cannot flash it via adb, because of the recovery i am using (i think ). With CWM i could not do that. after adb sideload **********.zip command, it says "error: device not found"
now i am looking for a solution to this error.
But if i could have had my tablet open in stock recovery, it might already be solved.
PROBLEM SOLVED.
HERE IS THE STEPS TAKEN:
DOWNLOAD OTA FILE FROM 4.3 TO 4.4 (NOT FACTORY IMAGE).
DOWNLOAD LATEST SDK, RUN SETUP.
PUT THE OTA FILE IN sdk\platform-tools DIRECTORY.
SIDELOADING THE OTAFILE:

IF YOUR DEVICE IS NOT RECOGNIZED DURING SIDELOADING CHECK THIS:

Does this work on a rooted nexus?
Only reason I'm asking is cause the sideloading link states "..to update nexus without root..."
Can someone help me with me problem?
I have a Nexus 4, its currently running 4.3 & want to update to 4.4 without loosing my data.
Its a stock 4.3 ROM, but my device has the bootloader unlocked, rooted & has Franco kernel installed along with TWRP recovery.
Recently, I've been getting the notification that 4.4 update is ready to install. I click ok & the phone re-boots into TWRP, after a few seconds the screen goes back to the main TWRP menu without installing the update.
So, I downloaded the latest factory image from here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images (Android 4.4 (KRT16S)) & extracted the 'image-occam-krt16s.zip' file from the 'occam-krt16s-factory-2006f418.tgz' download. I then booted into TWRP > Advanced > ADB Sideload.
and ran the following command from adt sdk tools: 'adb sideload image-occam-krt16s.zip'. This sent the zip file to the phone (took about ~1 minute) & the update started but failed almost straight away.
This is the error message I got:
Can anyone point me in the right direction why 4.4 wont install?
Thanks.
Thats not how it works. The factory image zip is not flashable...it contains the imgs for flashing via fastboot, not a recovery.
You can get the flashable ota zips from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145848
The ones found on that thread can be adb sideloaded.
Thanks for the update.
So, according to the link you provided I need to wipe everything & revert back to stock.
So, there's no way to install 4.4 if I have TWRP & custom kernel installed?

No there is a way. Download the ota zip from that page and flash via TWRP. It should work, assuming that you are currently on 4.3 JWR66Y.

The links are not installing the factory image image by adb sideloading. They are using an ota zip (what i have provided you with above) and sideloading that.
Thanks.
Someone lead me down the wrong path with the OTA image. They told me to use the factory image one. Sorry about the dumbness!!
I've tried updating via TWRP install & adb sideload with the image from the link & it fails each time.
Seems that theres something not quite right with my phone. My phone is definitely running 4.3 JWR66Y with 3.4.0 Franco Kernel.
Is my version of TWRP ok - I have 2.6.3.0. I didn't know if this had any issues with flashing 4.4? I've tried updating it through Goomanager but i doesn't seem to want to download the latest version.
edit, just manually install 2.6.3.3 & update is still failing.

You are definetly using this right?: http://android.clients.google.com/p....signed-occam-KRT16S-from-JWR66Y.d1b99704.zip
Instead of sideloading try pushing it to the phone manually then flashing it.
Nope, not working. It just doesnt want to know.
I wonder if its the custom kernel? I'll try flashing the OEM one see if it makes a difference.
it will not work, otas check for fils remember?.
hes using custom kernel so no work.
to upgrade to 4.4 download factory images of 4.4. extract and then u open image-occamikrt16s.zip(or whatever the name is), delete userdata.img and recovery.img, then u restart your n4 into fastboot mode, connect to pc, and run flash-all.boom, but u will need to re flash the kernel with a krt16s compatible one.
Hello,
I rooted my Nexus 7 (older generation) with wug tools. Since 4.2 I have been updating the firmware with no problem. However this time 4.4.4 will not install properly. After reboot it (in firmware installation page) it will issue an error and after a few minutes will reboot back to Android.
Every few days the 4.4.4 will prompt to install again and nothing is changed.
Does anyone experience the same thing? Do you know any workaround?
Thanks.
Try Odin?
You made system/App changes that the update needs to patch the os.

After you rooted the device You Likely have changed a System File or app that The update is trying to push a Update for. Some Root required apps can do this as well. Since your asking this . I would assume you do NOT Know whats modified. So your Best bet is to RETURN YOUR DEVICE BACK TO STOCK UN rooted. Not Recommended but you can use THE TOOL KIT To do this . Fastboot thru adb Would be best.. Flash THE Factory stock image from GOOGLE FOR 4.4.4 AND THEN Re root your Device. YOU WILL Have to back up your data as this will cause you to loose everything..
Hope this helps.
There are plenty of threads on here to explain how to RETURN To stock .So I will not give Instructions.

ODIN IS A Samsung device flash utility .. USE FAST BOOT Via adb for Nexus devices ..
To add on, you can try with adb, erase system, boot, cache and recovery if necessary and flash stock 4.4.4 equivalent. This way, your device data is still intact.

Exactly!
As others said, download the tgz from the nexus stock images site, extract it and put it in your adb folder. Boot your device into bootloader and type-
Code:
[fastboot update image-nakasi-ktu84p.zip/CODE]
Let it update and reboot. You will be unrooted. Flash your recovery and Supersu again and you should have rooted 4.4.4 :)
So I recieved the notification that the 5.0.2 update was ready to install on my tablet. My tablet is ROOTED but that is all, still stock, I only root to use ad away. I get an error trying to install it OTA. How can I install the update, without having to wipe all my data? Sorry, I am very new to this stuff

No go on root. Your system partition has to be pristine. (Technically you can add files, but the ones that came with it have to be unchanged) Just undo any changes you have made and unroot and the OTA should work.
So if I get this right, OTA breaks also when recovery is stock, but supersu installed, modified hosts and gps.conf file

The HOSTS file came with the stock image. It counts, unfortunately. (I'm also an Adaway user)
Modify /system, you don't OTA. Period.
Just download the Nexus image and flash just system.img, not the batch file.
Can I flash the system.img in TWRP or do I need to flash the stock recovery?
And will this upgrade me from 5.0.1 to 5.0.2 without losing anything except for root?
Thanks!
^You flash the system image with fastboot. Run: fastboot flash system system.img
You'll keep data just have to reflash the su zip in twrp.

Thanks for the info. Just had this problem myself and was trying to figure out what to do. This must be a 5.x problem? I've never had this problem on 4.x as long as I had the stock recovery installed. Just had to re-root after. Guess I'm off to download the factory images since it won't even show an update available after erroring out. It definitely still shows 5.01 as being the version I'm on.

Oh I wasn't going to do a fresh install (i.e. wiping everything), just flash that system.img or modify the batch file to remove the "-w" flag and just run that. I'm wary of running 3rd party ROMs now after I couldn't play movies through Play Movies that were downloaded to the device instead of streamed. Something to do with copy protection I guess
It isn't a "3rd party ROM," just a flashable version of 5.0.2. If you flash using TWRP, just don't have it wipe anything. I flashed his 5.0.1 flashable ROM over 4.4.4 (after updating my bootloader) and didn't lose anything.

Assuming this was in reply to me? I'm not worried about losing anything. I've done the whole back it up and wipe between ROMs a ton on my OG Droid and Galaxy Nexus. In this case it's a worry that Play Movies for instance will detect that it is not a stock ROM/image and will disallow playing downloaded versions of movies in the app. I.e. you can download vs. stream for offline playback. I nearly found out the hard way (night before leaving on a vacation) that I couldn't play downloaded versions (it will download but not play them) when I for instance installed AOKP to my Nexus 7. As best I could tell from a bunch of Googling, it's something to do with copy protection.
It was, but I didn't know your experience level. I guess what I wanted to say is that scrosler's stock rooted ROM is exactly that; once it's on the tablet it isn't any different from rooting the OTA or factory image. It's just flashable via recovery instead of having to use fastboot or flash-all.bat.

Ah ok. Well, I ended up using fastboot to flash the system.img last night and looks like I'm good to go. I tried unrooting (SuperSU remove root function) and changing betterbatterystats to a non-system app first but the OTA still failed. Yeah I learned how to use the basic adb/fastboot stuff when I got my Galaxy Nexus and again with the N7. I figured that way if I totally broke something I'd know how to fix it, and all the fancy tools weren't around when the GNex first came out (at least I don't think they were).
I dirty flashed scrosler's 5.0.1 ROM when I got the 5.0.1 OTA notification, but when the 5.0.2 factory image was posted I fastboot flashed the system.img from that and rerooted. Naturally, less than half a day or so later, scrosler posted his 5.0.2.
So for someone that's not really too experience with fastboot, could someone post a step by step?
Where would I get the system.img?
Check the sticky threads for guides. Read and reread then get started on setting up the Android SDK. Once complete, type in the commands letter for letter.
