Hello all, new Galaxy user here.....I came from 3D HTC. ok my questions...
1. I am already rooted, what back up , ROM and other stuff do I need to use. There are so many links to so many choices.
2. Which are the easiest to use? I'm not good with complicated options.

First off, you don't NEED to use anything but what you have right? If for some reason you are not happy with what your phone comes with than it is all personal preference. I use TWRP for custom recovery/backups and is very easy to install via GooManager app. No flashing required, all touch based, and designed very friendly I think. As for roms, kernels, etc. they all pretty much install the same and will give different results. If you don't want to complicate things just stick with rooted stock unless it does not do something you need.

The question to start with is, "What do you want your phone to do"?
Look at the capabilities of your phone with the stock ROM:
Are you happy with the way it works? (or can you make it work the way you want by changing the available options)? If so, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with some application? Can you download an app that fixes this? If so, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with the UI? Try out another launcher - if that works for you, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with the bloat on your phone? Can you disable that bloatware? If so, don't do anything else
Are you not happy with the bloat on your phone? If you can't disable that bloatware? If so, you need to root - and then, you can freeze or remove the bloat app
Do you just want to backup everything? If so, you may not need root to use titanium backup - see if Helium backup (by CWM) does the trick for you
Do you want to change everything about your ROM, or flash a new kernel to get better battery life, or get some feature that is not available on the stock ROM (but is available on a custom ROM)? Then, root, install custom recovery (like twrp or CWM), take nandroid backup, and then flash new ROM
To summarize, what do you want your phone to do?

For the moment, the stock ROM has the most current updates. (but I'm pretty sure the carriers will delay the release of the next update, so at that time, flashing a custom ROM may be the way to go)
WiFi Tether - you don't necessarily have to flash a custom ROM just for that - you can get that just by updating the services.* files (see the hotspot mod thread in the Android development forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256950)
Best signal - you will get that based on the radios that are being used, and I believe the custom ROMs use the radios from Sprint as well.
Best battery - for that, you will need to pick a good kernel, so a custom ROM will probably be your best bet.
Hope that helps!

Glad this info was helpful
Just remember to do a Nandroid backup before you flash any custom ROMs or make any changes to the kernel or the root folders.
Personally, I use the latest touch based version of TWRP (installed using goomanager in the play store) - but CWM works fine too.
Being able to revert back to the nandroid backup has saved my rear end more than once
Hi everyone
Just got my samsung galaxy s4 from sprint. I love this phone and the capabilities of it. However there is tons and tonsbof application that I honestly never see need for like dropbox, etc. My phone is rootef with CWM recovery, it has the latest superus but I have not installed a rom since im planning to make my own rom sometime in the future. My main concer is whetger there is a zip I can instal that will remove some apps. Preferbably something that is not rom based. I like the stock look of the samsung. Id really appreciate it thanks.

Here ya go bro. Not a flashable zip, but you can chose what to remove and all those apps listed are "safe to remove" (hence the name!) lol.

If you're rooted, you can uninstall with TB. Remember to backup before you attempt to remove something and you might need it for something else to function. This is something I stumped on and I use to customize and remove apps which I do not use/need.

Zips as in apps? and games? look at the play store, plenty of free apps you can download and try out.
edit:
Unless you're refering to an app that will help you remove unwanted apps off your phone, try installing Titanium Backup.

Hi all...sorry if this is very noob but hope someone can help me out...
i got my galaxy s4 for att and its been great so far...i did root it and got rid of all the junk stuff on the phone which was nice to do... but a little issue now..there is an OTA update and its trying to apply it by rebooting but it goes to my console screen i guess and i know even if it applies it it would get rid of root.... is there a way to apply this without having to reinstall all my emails (5 emails) and my apps and keep the root ability on it? I would love to get the feature to send apps to my SD thats the only reason i really want it.
again im sorry if this is very noobish to some of u but would like a nice guide if possible how to do it.
Thanks in advance
What device? Thats important, and DO NOT let it do the update. if you are rooted, you could freeze the samsung updater.
I would get off stock and flash a custom rom.

hehe I know you stated galaxy s4, but I needed to make sure, US version right?
Use my rom, mine is totally stock, with a few modifications, and FAST!
or you can go any TW rom.
here is mine..
[ROM] ViSiON-X v1.0|AROMA|4.2.2|MGA|TW|[08-03]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391142
then you will not have to worry about an update, until someone finds a patch for the update...

I use Infamous S4 as well, I love it. It's pretty stock feeling.
When it comes to the backing up part, I suggest Titanium Backup. Get the pro version and you can batch install all of your apps from a backup, otherwise you have to do it one by one. It also saves all app data and system data and accounts, so you can do a full wipe when installing an update or a new ROM (always a good idea,) then just let it completely restore the phone from a backup. You can use it to back-up everything, except for the home-screen layout (android limitation apparently.) Plus you can backup right to the phone if you have space so you don't have to wory about using the computer. I recomment getting a microSD card for 10 bucks at Staples and backing up to that. When you're restoring, make sure that you check what you're restoring. Most of the stuff in red are system apps that don't need to be restored (as newer or the same versions may already be installed from the update.)
For restoring root priviledges, CWM and TWRP custom rrecoveries have a tool for this.
Trying this again....
(the other threads, a couple weeks old now, did not contain much information)
Rooted users, what software/apps have you removed (and noticed no unsatisfying results)?
Also, what did you use to delete/remove/freeze/disable?
What device do you have, easiest way is to use clean tool from Scott in the developers section, or simply flash Clean ROM

...Alright lets try once more. Who is you carrier? Clean tool is not a rom, it is a utility that removes bloat, it can be found in the AT&T dev section. IF you so wish to manually do something that someone with YEARS of experience has done for you automagically with the clean tool, there is a list in said post, with an entire list of all apps that were removed.
Most people use either root explorer, solid explore, rom toolbox pro, or titanium back up. Have a good one.

If you mean whether like on the Optimus G LG has locked down the apps so that if you uninstall them the ROM will refuse to boot, then that's a no. It's been confirmed that you can use Titanium to freeze and uninstall (or you could just flash cleanrom and it does the work for you).
thanks fr4nk1yn and droid_<3er, for the list and also the info. Just what I was looking for!
Hey guys.
I am not that new in the whole rooting "scene" but it seems that I am unable to find a proper guide for rooting my (updated) phone. Every guide I have found, not only in this site, is outdated for like a year or so or just for older versions of the firmware, and if there is one thats for D802H(international model, I'm from Greece) it's probably in really bad english or directed towards pros. I rooted my G2 when I got it last year but decided to unroot because of some problems with the screen so I could use my warranty and haven't rerooted since. So it would be really helpful if any of you could point me in a certain guide or just run me through the whole process of rooting my phone, what to download, what to do to my phone, the recoveries etc. I would really like to use Cyanogen Mod or a G3 mod. Certainly, my choice for these two is because they look awesome. If you have any other rom on your mind that might be better than these, please dont hesitate from telling me. I really need all the help I can get, last time I got stuck on a boot loop and didn't know what to do for many hours before I reflashed to stock. So basically I would like a root guide ( found one from a member called somboons, seemed nice but wasn't really thorough as to whether I should wipe all data or just wipe dalvik cache and really wasn't noob-friendly) and a link to a ROM download page with a guide for flashing it. Not really into kernels, so if you could suggest a different one from stock that provides better battery life etc. that would be great. Any other info that you feel I should know will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance guys and sorry for the trouble I'm putting you,
George.
P.S.: Would like to avoid wiping data if at all possible.

Oh well that was easy, thanks man. Rooted succesfully, installed SU and now have TWRP. What about the ROM? For CM, should I just go in their site and pick one for my phone? Is a release here that's stable?
